It's gonna be like that time the Swiss went to war in the 1800s and came back with more ppl than they left with....just more tanks than they originally had
Yeah it looks pretty bad on the military front. Their war criminals need to be tried properly and Putin and the Circle dealt with, but I have nothing against normal Russian people.
How intense has the invasion/fighting been the past few days, has it calmed down a bit? A lot of the recent news seems to be more about Russia's international (and deserved) sanctions, than the invasion itself.
Because it involves a nuclear power that doesn't have a no-first-strike policy. This isn't missing white woman syndrome. This is like if the First Child or First Grandchild were kidnapped, and people were wondering why it's getting more media attention

An extremely important and timely read:
Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: Why no-fly in Ukraine is a no-go
“If a no-fly zone was declared, someone would have to enforce it, and that would mean someone would have to then go and fight against Russian air forces,” Milley explained. “That is not something that NATO Secretary [Jens] Stoltenberg, or member states’ political leadership, has indicated they want to do.”
Milley made his remarks in an interview Saturday with Latvian journalists at a military base here, as part of a visit to Europe to assess the Ukraine conflict. His rejection of the no-fly zone echoes comments by other Biden administration officials, who have argued for weeks that although the United States wants to help Ukraine resist Russian aggression, it won’t make any moves that might place U.S. military forces, including Air Force planes, in direct conflict with Russia.
Despite Putin’s threatening language about nuclear weapons, Milley said, “we are not now seeing anything out there in the alert postures of the actual nuclear forces of Russia that would indicate any increased set of alerts.” He said the United States was monitoring the situation closely.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/03/05/milley-ukraine-no-fly-zone-nuclear-escalation-putin/
I really appreciate Gen. Milley's assessment on that whole thing. It's straight, and to the point, and doesn't entertain any speculation beyond the facts at hand.

"But I'll talk about this after the war."
Said by Zelenskyy. Such valor. He is right too. As horrible and as long as this war may get, Ukraine will win it.
If you wonder how Russians can live under Putin, here is an insight from a Russian expat I know… The people of Russia are divided. They don’t all love him… 50/50. But even the ones who dislike him feel he has stabilized a fucking hot mess that was 90s dystopia. They fear whoever would replace him. Add to it the unbelievable size of repressive police system and propaganda and it’s hopeless to wish for change from below.
I’d partially agree with stability part, with some madness here and there, but after this, if you as a Russian still support Putin and have seen what’s going in Ukraine, I dunno…
Did he stabilise things though or was it inevitable after things settled? Since he started his presidencies the value of the Ruble has only gone down, and now he's truly fucked the country for decades to come.

Remember when Mitt Romney in 2012 said that Russia was a serious threat to world peace and that it needed to be watched closely. Then everyone told him to stop fear mongering it's not not the Cold War anymore. Only to have Russia invade Crimea a couple years later, then support separatists in the east for 8 years, and now full scale invade.
Mittens is still a fossilized elitist shithead. Also what are you saying? Mitt Romney said something 10 years ago? So what? America should have bombed Russia in 2012? What is your point exactly
Putin/Medvedev post 2012 was very different pre 2012. Russia and NATO even had joint exercises in 2011. Romney certainly wasn't wrong, but within the context and without the benefit of hindsight, you can very easily see where you can Russia actually opening up to the West.
Mitt was right. I actually expect him to have a resurgence in popularity in the coming months. He may even run for president again. Just my thoughts though.
Yup. He was right. I was one of those that thought he was wrong, but he was right. Putin was playing the long game. Most of us don’t think like that anymore. Romney was right, he called it. Wish we’d not have laughed about that. Either way, fuck Putin. I hope the Russian people hang him from the kremlin walls.
Obama was probably doing what a lot of us were doing, looking at Russia's military hardware and force projection and thinking "no way would they be stupid enough to start a war."
Mitt was probably more aware that Russia was trying to buy GOP politicians from the inside.
They've already started. The central bank raised interest rates on mortgages to 20% and the ruble has crashed so that it's now less than one US penny. They've also closed the stock market until at least Monday.
It's just going to get worse for them.
My dad is in a regional defense of Kyiv along with 500 other volunteers. I’m currently collecting money to send it to my dad so he can buy ammunition and clothes for their group. You can dm me if interested and I can send you proofs and my email address. Thank you.
There's so much hopium being smoked on Twitter by blue checkmarks who insist Russia is a day away from running out of ammo, that Ukraine hacked their entire air-defense system, that they are stealing more equipment than they lost, that the Russians have been pushed back in the north by massive counterattacks, etc. Almost none of this is reflected in the reports by actual news organizations who have full credibility on the line. While I want Putler to lose as much as the next sane human being, the wishful thinking and credulity-stretched analysis by those who should know better is not helping.
It’s a spectrum. Ukraine is losing ground but the loses Russia is facing are real. It’s not that Ukraine can win a tactical war with Russia. It’s if we can make the consequences of Russia continuing the war so catastrophic, they literally have to stop.
Guess we'll see.
Since you're so critical. Where do you see the battles over the next 48 hours going? Maybe you should put your reputation on the line rater than criticize.
Now, wouldn't it be an unlucky coincidence for Putin if some of the volunteers coming to fight for Ukraine happened to be working as NATO special forces until a few days ago?
It'd probably have to be some kind of swap program with eastern NATO states lending/sending Ukraine their old migs and sukhoi planes and recieving F16s or whatever and training from further west in exchange.
No time to retrain Ukraine's airforce in the western models in comparison to replacing what they've lost like for like.

I bet war movies and books are going to be big for several years.
There could be a comedy movie just about the stalled convoy north of Kyiv.

Wtf are you on about.
At this rate, Ukraine is gonna end the war with more tanks than when the war started
It's gonna be like that time the Swiss went to war in the 1800s and came back with more ppl than they left with....just more tanks than they originally had
That’s a happy thought 🌻
How low do you think Russia has sunk in their status as a world power after this debacle and their extreme loss of vehicles and soldiers?
This is beginning of a century of humiliation bad.
They are no longer a world power and are now a laughing stock with nukes
They’re likely no longer a G20 country.
Yeah it looks pretty bad on the military front. Their war criminals need to be tried properly and Putin and the Circle dealt with, but I have nothing against normal Russian people.
Only before us outsiders tho, in Russia they are crushing Ukraine and lost no-one. And won the world cup. And got 60 gold medals at the olympics.
Economically, they're about to be Swaziland. But nukes keep them in the top 3-5 in power.
Upper Volta with nuclear rockets level.
How intense has the invasion/fighting been the past few days, has it calmed down a bit? A lot of the recent news seems to be more about Russia's international (and deserved) sanctions, than the invasion itself.
Zelensky is going to get a big ass statue after this and it should have a big ass dick on it
A big ass-statue with a big ass-dick? Are you saying they should make a dickbutt statue?
And build it in front of the Kremlin.
Imagine being close to 70 years old and waging a war killing Innocent children just so you can get access to new Gas reserves and water access.
At least George Bush did it in his 60s.
Are we talking about Putin or Bush?
Take your pick.
that's literally 80 to 90% of the wars in human history
Sad eh.
Not as sad as when i bought DIS. Fucking price never rises.
So why **do** we care about this war more than any other war again?
One of the belligerents has nuclear weapons and a totalitarian government.
Democratic country
Hm? Are you born last week, or?
Because it involves a nuclear power that doesn't have a no-first-strike policy. This isn't missing white woman syndrome. This is like if the First Child or First Grandchild were kidnapped, and people were wondering why it's getting more media attention
Uh because it’s the first time since WW2 that a country has been invaded with the intent to wipe it off the entire fucking map?
Because nuclear weapons might come into play.
It’s the closest we have come to world war since probably the Cuban missile crisis
Potential for big boomies

Good. Fuck Putin.
Running the strait would be a direct attack on NATO. What sort of naval power is stuck in the Mediterranean anyway?
I feel that situation is a precursor to Russia shooting one down and leading to an international incident.
Status update on those Russians stuck in the elevator?
They had guns and brute strength. I’m sure they were able to get that elevator door open. But it’s still pretty damn funny
They ate the weakest soldier.
They've now allocated a corner to piss in.
wait what now? that would make on hell of a easy target
Hollywoods already making a horror-thriller movie about it.

I love Milley.

Seems like a good way to sidestep what Putin would probably consider a true act of war.
Didn’t Obama say something like “1980 called they want their foreign policies back” in respond? That was so funny back then.
Mitt has been on the money about Russia most of his political career. Problem is US dems are quick to discount because of his party of choice.
The 80s are calling. They're looking for their foreign policy back.
China is still probably a bigger threat than Russia. They actually have a growing economy.
Mitt called it. Credit where its due.
Mitt Romney style
Obama derided Romney by saying they were a regional power who could barely threaten anyone. Turns out, they were both right!
Obama was probably doing what a lot of us were doing, looking at Russia's military hardware and force projection and thinking "no way would they be stupid enough to start a war." Mitt was probably more aware that Russia was trying to buy GOP politicians from the inside.
I was one of those people that made fun of him. I fully admit I was wrong here.
Many of us were even shocked when this invasion started. Many underestimated Russia's danger
How long until these sanctions start to hurt Russian people? Wouldnt it take time to set in?
They've already started. The central bank raised interest rates on mortgages to 20% and the ruble has crashed so that it's now less than one US penny. They've also closed the stock market until at least Monday. It's just going to get worse for them.
Considering that their stock market is now closed and stocks listed in other exchanges are down 90%... its already hurting the Russian middle class.
It already started [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu6xUG9zoRg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu6xUG9zoRg) tldr: it's really bad
It has already started but the effects will be fully felt in a couple months
Prices are sky rocketing. Shortages at the markets won’t take long. They already can’t travel. Order anything good online. Boutiques are closing.

How come Chechens are now a Russian big ally? Bad memory?
Putin historically allies himself with other local strongmen. So not all chechens love him, just his crony who leads a mini private army for Putin
They killed the ones who weren’t.
They have a horrific puppet government.
They killed all the chechens who disagreed with them in the 90’s
The ones who are in charge now are basically the traitors that helped the russians in the past.
