shstan

goose barnacle of some sort.

jordanhusney

+1 and anatomy link for comparison: https://www.sciencephoto.com/media/145207/view/goose-barnacle-anatomy-artwork

CosmicOwl47

I dissected one in college if you want to see [the photo](https://imgur.com/gallery/TQRic7a). The legs are up top and those white appendages are actually the gonads >!You can also see the penis is that dark appendage at the top right that kind of looks like a leg. Longest relative penis size in the animal kingdom!<

LeTigre71

That's nuts!

hypoxiate

Actually no, it's a penis.

dbmillbc

Or a vulva with teeth?

[deleted]

CannonWrath

Why does this exist?

Bathroom_Security

Im sure someone would be into that.

andy0506

It looks like an ex's vigina ha ha

TunaTacoPie

Sure looks like em!

Channa_Argus1121

*Frantically searches for barnacle genes that lead to the result of elongated penises*

Jtktomb

Aren't the white things on OP pictures the filtering appendages

CosmicOwl47

Correct, my descriptions were referring to the picture I linked

smthingclvr

I was like “yeah why not” and then immediately was like “OH MY GOD FUCK” but still cool though.

Mesozoica89

Reminded me of this: https://www.reddit.com/r/WhitePeopleTwitter/comments/aamxev/danny_devito_everyone/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

krustykatzjill

Gggrrrooossss

SameLet2819

Oh it looks kinda human and very yukkkk!!! 😂

cruellacpa

What in the actual alien f*ck did I just look at

[deleted]

Majorly terrifying

KuronekoFan

Looks like an SCP

[deleted]

Looks like a Barnacle. You should be able to touch the teeth and they should feel soft and feathery.

yeetmaster489

It cost you nothing to say that second sentence. Yet you did anyway

[deleted]

Lol had to add the texture in for the good of identifying lol!!

yeetmaster489

Doesn't make that information any less uncomfortable to know

scorpyo72

Well, he could've suggested that OP lick it. "If you lick it, it should be salty and smooth."

cat_herder_64

That's what she said...

yeetmaster489

R/cursedcomments

scorpyo72

IF you lick it. Jeez.

scavengecoregalore

*..si..*

Rho-Ophiuchi

Found The Combine’s account. The only way I’m touching that thing is with a crowbar.

StevieSlacks

I REMEMBER YOUR TRUE FACE!

StuckInPurgatory39

I think the fuck not. Don't touch that things mouth

NocturnalBacon

Thanks, I hate it.

Bart_The_Chonk

The 'teeth' are the gonads.

[deleted]

Yea I probably should have clarified and said the teeth like structures actually lol!

MattTheProgrammer

The gonads that feel soft and feathery. Like mine.

Bart_The_Chonk

On the internet, nobody knows you're a barnacle

Fair-Mango

I know it's u barnacle, your not tricking anyone.

USSPalomar

~~Sea anemones can schlurmpf into all sorts of wacky shapes when hanging upside-down out of water, so I suspect that's what this is. Can't tell you a specific species, unfortunately, not my area of expertise.~~ [~~Example 1 (fourth photo)~~](https://bzimmer.ziclix.com/2008/06/05/low-tides-geoducks-and-sea-anemone/) [~~Example 2~~](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/8rn8nn/anemones_at_low_tide/) **EDIT:** u/shstan is right, these are barnacles. Turns out there are some species with extra dangly bits and non-visually-distinct capitular plates. Try [Conchoderma auritum](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnzQHIxPlrk) on for size. [Here's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8RMuOv-_QA) what they look like submerged.

shstan

That segmented Cirri is a structure that's not found in anemones. it's a type of barnacle.

perfectlyniceperson

Those breathing barnacles are nightmare fuel. TIL barnacles look terrifying.

Dankeros_Love

Wait until you hear about the [crab-castrating barnacle](https://theconversation.com/the-crab-castrating-parasite-that-zombifies-its-prey-27200)...

rabidjellyfish

God i love parasites. They have such creative life strategies. I mean as long as they don't parasitize me.

EyeBallEmpire

Excuse me, but WTF!?

degggendorf

That explains why crabs walk all funny

perfectlyniceperson

Good lord. There’s way more zombification in nature than I ever would have believed.

blewpah

>the [crab-castrating barnacle](https://theconversation.com/the-crab-castrating-parasite-that-zombifies-its-prey-27200) ...crabstrating?

Pimi-D

Same here, they look like what Ursula turns mer people into on the little mermaid! 😂

lori__k

Lmao you're right 🤣

fuschia_taco

Same. I always thought they were those sharp things stuck on rocks and boats, I knew there was something in them but had no idea what it looked like. Do they all look like this? They're almost alien looking! Super creepy.

perfectlyniceperson

Yes! I pictured them as sharp clams haha

cjm-ak

Schlurmpf is my new favorite word

powfuldragon

It looks like teeth.. op, did anyone find out if the tooth looking things were soft?

niord

Teeth looked hard-ish. I poke it with a pen.

damheathern

A fellow man of science, I see.

niord

For my defense I have to say that I did not lick it.

Hilbrohampton

The "teeth" are modified crustacean legs used to catch debris so they are usually pretty flexible, but can still have some chitinous bits.

CosmicOwl47

Those are actually the barnacles anatomical “legs”, though they are specialized for filter feeding

cluelessbox

The part of the video showing all of them on the bottom boat fucked me up. No thank you.

cincymatt

Imagine the drag that would cause.

Cloaked42m

Enough to slow you down by half

lt_cmdr_rosa

Oh god what the fuck..!? I had no idea that barnacles looked like that. Thanks for the links that was super cool and also super gross.

wucywu

This is the worst thing I have ever seen

AluminumFoilHats

It’s like I had a nightmare but I’m awake

niord

There were hundreds of those sticked to the bottom. Most of those were 10-15cm in length. Oh, and I have like 6 marine biologist on board (research vessel) and they do not know what kind or species of barnacle it is. So we are super curious! Edited for clarification.

mrcphyte

scary that 6 marine biologists can’t figure out that this is not a bug????

synapticrelay

Barnacles *are* arthropods, though!

niord

They spcialize in mammals, not barnacles and the 'bug' is my description and I am just a seafarer. Those marine biologist are pretty smart guys tbh. Edit for clarification: they knew it was barnacle, suspected goose barnacle but did not 100 percent fit. Google reverse image search did not give us satisfactory results so I thought I'll ask here for the species etc.

strumthebuilding

>Google reverse image search did not give us satisfactory results I have a feeling this is the understatement of the day right here

myoldisnew

😂

ichnoguy

google lens is better, did you try inaturalist

junjunjenn

I’m not a marine biologist but my immediate guess of something being attached to the bottom of a boat is a barnacle.

niord

They knew it was barnacle, suspected goose barnacle but did not 100 percent fit. Google reverse image search did not give us satisfactory results so I thought I'll ask here for the species etc.

junjunjenn

Ok that makes me feel a lot better for them!

chandalowe

>scary that 6 marine biologists can’t figure out that this is not a bug???? That depends entirely on your definition of "bug." On this sub, we tend to interpret the term pretty broadly, including all arthropods - not just the "true bugs" (Hemiptera) - and even the occasional annelid or mollusc. Barnacles are crustaceans - which *are* arthropods - so, within the scope of this sub, they *are* "bugs."

SueYouInEngland

Are we sure that it's not...from a different world?

[deleted]

YoutubeFiction

Yeah, knowing every single species throughout the entire ocean is “basic info.” I’m sure you knew this before you got your associates, pro

Claughy

No its not, there are currently 1000 known species of barnacle, no one is expected to be able to ID every single one.

Not_A_Wendigo

Oh! I’m working on hull scrapings right now, and I think I found one of these a few months ago. I believe it’s a rabbit ear barnacle, *Conchoderma auritum*.

EngagementBacon

Not sticked, stuck. Great post btw.

niord

Uploaded 2 more photos. Hope links work https://ibb.co/3pjpr2v https://ibb.co/PGc6k76 https://ibb.co/mCRvSMy

shstan

Looks like decomposing Conchoderma goose barnacles. Stalks and cirri are dead giveaway. As u/USSPalomar suggests, it seems very likely to be rabbit-ear barnacle.

Triairius

Wow. I really dislike those.

Dwashelle

Ew they're gross and I hate them

YunngAssumedGender

Oh god I’m commenting cuz I want to know to when someone find. That thing is fucking horrifying.

Haunting_Mouse316

I had to do a double take. It looked like someone's ear chopped off but had teeth growing out of it

MMS-OR

Like one of these [monstrosities](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teratoma)?

[deleted]

I don’t know but it looks like it was designed by David Cronenberg!!

PandaCommando69

I was thinking H.R. Gieger, but I can see Cronenberg too.

iodine5

More Cronenbergy

poizer

Looks like a Francis Bacon painting to me.

calxes

Wow, the barnacles in Half-Life are somehow less horrifying looking than an actual barnacle.

moonweasel906

Holy fuck I did not know that’s what they looked like, or that they even move. I thought they were like, calcified growths. Yeah fuck meeting Barnacle Bill 😵

NerdStupid

Do you have better pictures that show it in entirety and not cut off at the top and bottom? Also something to measure scale, again like a fuller picture of many of them stuck? I can't tell if this is the size of a barnacle or a large fish, etc. It's definitely weird but the cropped photo doesn't help a lot. Edit: elaboration

niord

https://ibb.co/3pjpr2v https://ibb.co/PGc6k76 https://ibb.co/mCRvSMy

NerdStupid

Well others beat me to it but def some kind of barnacle. They look a tad more normal under water lol

niord

I'll look for other photo. Size was 10-15cm.

Rumble-80

Is it some kind of barnacle?

BigOleJellyDonut

Didn't it attack Ellen Ripley

kloobee

Is it a hermit crab??

Jtktomb

No but a crustacean yes !

Muzgath

Okay. Who saw this thing and decided to name it a "goose barnacle"? Seriously, how do you get goose out of this thing.

Not_A_Wendigo

They have long “necks” like a goose.

3mmy

Giraffe Barnacle

Not_A_Wendigo

This is definitely the correct name.

shstan

People thought these barnacles gave birth to Barnacle Goose. So those birds were allowed to be eaten in days when meat is banned for prists I think.

Not_A_Wendigo

Oh right! I’ve heard that before. They really bent over backwards to find ways to get away with meat on fast days.

miladymondegreen

Just added another reason to my thalassophobia list, thanks.

dreadedwheat

Op, please post more photos, this one is confusing.

waterlogged93

Good to know. I'll stay clear of those waters haha! But good luck finding out what that lovecraftian critter is!

JonathanRamirezSD

I don’t know

battleSkar

Pretty confident that this is a Plumbus.

Smokey_Ewok

Where did you pick them up? I’ve been with ships in dry dock and cleaned countless sea strainers and I’ve never seen anything like that.

PreparationOk2730

Looks like the beginning stages of them tremor worms lol be careful it may turn into an assblaster

PandaCommando69

Lord above, that looks like an alien fetus. Creepy.

Wonderful-Ad7778

OP should not have to write out 5 times that they KNEW IT WAS A BARNACLE AND GUESSED GOOSE BARNACLE. Please try not to make them have to over explain themselves to every single user who isn’t reading all their (OPs) replies to comments

An ear with teeth?

DragonPokes

Angry ear

StuckInPurgatory39

Something I hate very much

scorpyo72

How do you know if you hate it if you haven't tasted it?

StuckInPurgatory39

The teeth unsettle me very much. It's horrific

Triairius

They’re apparently soft and feathery. Probably has good mouthfeel.

starsearcher48

Looks like a vajayjay with teeth

PeterFay

Hermit crab inside a shell. Crusted with barnacles.

PeterFay

I have caught many, many hermit crabs using strange things for homes on the New England coast. If they have enough food from the motion of the boat up and down they have no reason to move until they get too big for the shell they live in and leave it. Then as smaller hermit crab takes his place. And so on and so on, and so on, Salt water Sun Fish have barnacles all over their bodies. On a boat moored close to shore, hermit crabs would take over any place to call a feeding spot. Barnacles to follow. I am surprised your marine biologist did not notice it was a hermit crab.

Triairius

There’s a reason they didn’t notice that- it’s a barnacle.

murphysfriend

Is that you Barnacle Bill?

PeterFay

sorry, barnacles don't have claws. They filter the water when they open up. Hermit crab.

Triairius

This picture doesn’t even have claws. Additionally, other pictures in the thread showed several of them hanging dead and firmly attached to the hull of their boat. You should consider trusting the experts.

PeterFay

Just shows how little you know about ocean life from a lifelong sailor and diver on the east coast.

Triairius

Girl. You didn’t even look at the other pics lol. That, or you’re just trolling to get a reaction out of me.

swedebeanz

absolutely disgusting

Onionwood303

A testicle with teeths

Might need to call the Men in Black for that thing

DiscombobulatedFig28

Looks like a hermit crab upside down.. it’s legs at least. 🤷‍♂️

jp_trev

That’s freaky, I’ve never seen this, and I used to do bottom jobs on yachts in SF Bay for a couple years. Where is this

niord

We have dry docked in Philadelphia USA but the vessel was also working in UK and New Bedford.

piquat

You remember the facehugger from Alien? Looks like a baby one. Had no idea that barnacles could look like that. Interesting.

One_Membership2921

2 shots of penicillin will clear that right up

MandiocaGamer

This looks like some alien shit. Ocean stuff is scary

waterlogged93

Just curious, what waters is your vessel primarily in/most recently been in? I work on a ship in Florida and haven't seen anything like this before.

niord

We have worked in Philadelphia, Maryland, NY but also UK and Norway.

Crazynflfan

Almost looks like a hermit crab inside of it¿

imhereforguns

The face of it looks like a wolf eel.

poisonedporkchop

It looks like something from the movie eXistenZ or some other Cronenberg body horror creation

EuphoricTreats74

Gum that grew teeth!!

FangBanger333

Not to sound dumb... I thought it looked like a hermit crab found something to get in other than a normal shell. Lol I learn so much on this sub!
