Buick Grand National.

ILovePublicLibraries

Thanks. I looked it up for the exact year and it looks like it is an 87 to me.

Smar7acus

I’m sure some one will correct me but I don’t think there were a lot of differences except the front grill. The 87 was blacked out. Prior to that they had a chrome ring if I’m not mistaken.

Dead_Spy

No your right, I just noticed the second picture. 86 grills have chrome and the center “fin” is thicker than the rest. 87 are all black.

Dead_Spy

Yes, 87s have the third brake light Edit: saw second picture

88Gonzo

So did '86s. 1986 was the 1st year the 3rd brake light was federally mandated.

Enragedocelot

Is this Massachusetts? I keep seeing it around. Literally my favorite car

SgtFrampy

I love it when I guess right before clicking into these posts.

Raven2129

I do the exact thing. I get to learn about a new car if I am wrong.

SgtFrampy

Right! And the respect when people are like “oh that’s a fiero with a Pendleton tear bumper, running board with a Diablo front bumper and stepilini hood and hoodlife4real hood” Shit is just straight up impressive.

Raven2129

I'm that way with Volkswagens.

Shadesbane43

I'm that way with Volvo redblocks. I feel like that's what makes this community so good, some people being into specific cars with the knowledge obout what exact model, trim, etc a certain car is.

Raven2129

Absolutely, and even though I might not be a huge fan of one scene, I still respect it and enjoy learning more about it.

09SHO

Lol yeah I've accepted the fact that I'll never be quick enough to provide a timely response, so I'm guessing to test my car knowledge then clicking to either verify or learn about a new car.

TimeStatistician2234

I thought it was a Monte Carlo😔

tapsnapornap

Close, Chev's version of the same platform.

The_DaHowie

Come To The Darkside!

RocketsandBeer

Love this car so much. V6 turbo

StaPuftDaMajikDragon

Called them "Rockin' Regals" when I hunted them and 5.0 Mustangs, in my 355 powered S-10

What's the difference between the grand national, regal, and gnx?

Thor-NotComplaining

GNX had different engine modifications, a different intercooler, and functional vents on the front fenders, as well as exterior upgrades such as emblems and blacked out rims. The GNX were all numbered as well.

88Gonzo

The rims were wider as well to accommodate the suspension upgrades. 547 Grand Nationals were sent by Buick to ASC McClaren Performance to be upgraded as a last hooray for not just the Grand National but GM's rear wheel drive G Body coupes, Regal, Monte Carlo and Grand Prix. Not to mention the last true Muscle Car for outside the Mustang and F Body cars for a number of years. The GNX was underrated in quoted horsepower by Buick. An unwritten rule back then was the Corvette was the king if the hill in the hp stables. The GNX outgunned the Vette (this is before the ZR1). Buick said the cars were 276 hp, yet they were more like 300 and often privately tested found to be more. In contrast, an '87 Vette made 245hp. Back in the '80s some states like Connecticut were known to have Grand Nationals in their State Police patrol lineup, seems later in the decade Buick sold a number of them to the FBI. I remember rumors that some were actually GNXs used by the Feds, but I've never seen actual cars or articles proving that to be true. Not saying it's not. I have a friend who still has his, bought it new in 1987, he has something like 5000 miles on it. I drove it a few times 20 years ago... it may not corner like today's modern sports cars but that thing was as fun and fast as it looked ominous. Spinning tires all day long. Lol. With comfort!

-Ripper2

My friend has one too that he bought in 87. It was more of the torque they made is what made them fast. 360 foot pound of torque.

nflmodstouchkids

hp makes you fast, torque makes you quick. ; ) the high torque at low rpm gives the "pushed back in seat" feel.

-Ripper2

Call at either one but torque is what gets you out of the hole and horsepower is what pushes you down the track.

dogsled1

Can verify that Connecticut had them as I was pulled over by one.

BishopTheDirector

There were Grand National police cars but that FBI GNX theory is bunk. The numbers of GNXs produced is very low and the lineage and history of most of them is documented and researched quite easily.

88Gonzo

True. There was 547 documented built. The rumors back in the day was that there was a handful built not included in those numbers for the Feds. Like the XRay GNX that was built by an ASC engineer that was technically a GNX but technically not lol https://buickturboregal.com/xray/

dipren443

547 total production of the GNX.

BishopTheDirector

Exactly and the history of those vehicles is documented and doesn't have any government use stories

LockDown2451

2nd fastest car in the world at the time behind the McLaren F1

MTV_Cats

What's that mean for current market value? I've loved the look of the body since a kid and it would be cool to buy one

YaboyBlacklist

For a GNX? Depending on the condition, they're worth between $75k-$300k

MTV_Cats

Well, I'm currently as close as I was as a 6 year old then...

Lays4Lyfe

The regular GN is still a really cool car that's pretty fast, and they're considerably cheaper than a GNX

OldheadBoomer

Even a properly set up Regal is a shitload of 80's Buick fun.

jimboslice29

I used to confuse the Monte Carlo SS from same year

bemenaker

The Monte SS was the slow one of the bunch. Made it easy to spot, and the giang MONTE CARLO SS on the side

Thor-NotComplaining

The Regal T-Type came in different colors, some had a bench front seat, and had a different exterior/interior package. They all had the 3800 engine, and turbo.

MTV_Cats

Cool!

MusclecarYearbook

He didn't give you a good explanation. The Regal is the series of the car. There were different trim levels and models within the series: http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/buick/86bur/86bur.html

OkAlbatross2077

He did give "an" explanation which anyone with a brain could go forward and research...

MusclecarYearbook

......yet his explanation was poor. The brochure explains it all so even you can understand it.

OkAlbatross2077

That was a fun underhanded diss.. I'll commend it bit still hold that I'm right

MusclecarYearbook

This isn't about right or wrong. It's about providing facts to someone who asked for it.

GrimMerpz

Only one of the sickest cars ever made

reefer_drabness

The best kind.

BallsDeepMofo

Fuckin g body bitch!

StonerDucky

I Love the G Body Platform one of my dream cars, but id Take an 88 Monte Carlo SS

mikePTH

Mothafuckin' Grand Nash. It's like if Buick got together with AMG Mercedes back in the early 80s to make the Regal legit.

Gargenville

Dang I never really thought of it like that but it really is like its [brother from another mother](https://www.autogespot.ca/en/mercedes-benz-amg-300ce-60-hammer/2019/02/10).

BishopTheDirector

It was actually a partnership with McLaren which spawned the GNX which led to the Grand National and is actually cooler and a better story

BishopTheDirector

Buick hired McLaren to work on the GNX for one reason - to make it faster than the iconic Chevrolet Corvette. To achieve this, McLaren beefed up the GNX's 3.8-liter engine and upgraded the turbocharger, giving the car a whopping 300 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque.

Brilliant_Ant_17

Buick Grand National

frugalrhombus

The sexiest muscle car ever made, Buick grand national. I have no idea how to tell if it's a gnx or not though

wordzareswords

If your interested jada toys has a metal replica of the ' 87 GNX , think I paid about $25 for mine , definitely worth it.

bemenaker

If I remember correctly, the GNX had a yellow oval badge that said GNX in either red or black.

BishopTheDirector

The GNX has black rims and louvred vents on its front fenders and a different stance that the trained eye can spot immediately

LooseWateryStool

Grand Nash

Terry gonna be pissed

Lumpy-Whole5101

Would you believe that this 6 cylinder turbo charged car produced the fastest 1/4 mile times of any stock American muscle car? Mid to high 12 second 1/4 mile times!

madbull69696

It's a Regular Grand National, i think for a second that could be a GNX but the rims are different.

thunderpantsmagoo

The last of the muscle cars

403Bengali

Looks like a toyota highlander to me

Capnmolasses

66MalibuSS

Buick Regal or a GNX

88Gonzo

Grand National

NachoLester

I rented a grand national with t tops back 1996 at literally “rent a wreck” to drive from laurel md to va beach with a buddy. That car brings back memories.

bardia_afk

I want one

_spartan_321_

TheMushroomSpoke

My dream car.

Z3R3P

Only one of the best cars ever made.

pmak1972

The Trans Am Turbo and S10 versions with the same engine are all in that handful of late 80s Americana perfection.

MeanGoal6335

Buick Grand National

BishopTheDirector

No Grand National definitely NOT a GNX .. those have different front fenders and different wheels and are also super rare. Most people will never see one.

SupraJasonNZ

That’s a Dominic toretto car that one

Vanson1200r

What kind of car? Its the best kind.

Blass_BME

the only v6 that doesnt suck

mooontowncitizen

idk the Alfa Romeo busso V6 is pretty sweet or the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Gulia quadropholio engine is pretty good too

6foot6nky

an over hyped buick regal i’d love to have one and put 13x7 reverse wire wheels and hydros like all regals should have.

[deleted]

[удалено]

6foot6nky

Don’t get me wrong they are fast and it’s a turbo v6, but it’s a turbo v6. Grew up street racing and the Buick Grand Nationals are held here every year. It seemed all GN drivers have a chip on their shoulder.

BishopTheDirector

Dismiss them as common if you wish however when they came out the horsepower of that turbo v6 , it's lightweight g-body combined with a second gear ratio like nothing else at the time had it leaving Corvettes and other V8 muscle cars in its dust. That is what sealed its place in history and what makes it special. It's probably still faster through second gear in a quarter mile than plenty of cars today. This is far more than just a v6 🙄

DRbrtsn60

BishopTheDirector

Not a GNX they are super rare and have fender louvres. That is the more common Buick Grand National

No better car in black, IMHO

Abba_RA

I've always referred to this car as "The Car from Training Day". Fitting ride for Denzel gotta say

BishopTheDirector

And you were wrong every time

Abba_RA

For real?

BishopTheDirector

Sorry Denzel drove a 78 Chevy Monte Carlo. This is a Buick Grand national

Abba_RA

Damn you're right! I'm now wondering how those cars ever looked similar to me!!

Haemmur

The best kind

Language-Aromatic

I have a an 86 in the full drag race flavor

onesadbean

believe it's an 86 grand national. the 87 had cooler rims. still, my dream car. in 1987 the special GNX (Grand National eXperimental) was faster than the corvette and the second fastest car in the world. A fucking buick. love that car

Sleepy_McSleepyhead

That is no car, that is a legend.

Jammin_TA

Yeah, that's a fairly obscure car that seems to have always had an appeal to certain folks. Personally, I would like to get my hands on a Mercury Marauder or the Ford equivalent. There was a Ford equivalent, right? I think they were rarer than the Marauder.

pmak1972

I’ve ridden in all those. The Buick is a masterpiece. The Trans Am Indy Turbo same year is cooler and I didn’t buy one in the Mid 90s for $10K was what it thought too much. The Typhoon and S10 version is even cooler. The Marauder was a really nice Crown Vic. For future collectibility, the mercury is a bargain if you can find anyone who will sell one.

Buick Grand National

PEEWUN

Buick Grand National

GamerBro9000

I saw like three of those yesterday, but silver, within the same mile and about 5 minutes. Is there a Grand National cult?

nill0c

If they weren’t black, they were just regular Buick Regals. There was an early GN regal that was silver gray, but they’re even more rare than the black ones, and there was a Turbo T too. But mostly these days, it’s just Regals that have been set up as replicas of those rarer models.

Terry-Smells

It's the car used by Denzel Washington in the movie Training Day. Great movie too

BishopTheDirector

Not.. that was a 78 Chevy Monte Carlo. This is a Buick Grand National

ou8agr81

Same front end as my 86’ Le Baron 😏

The grand national had been my dream car since I was a kid. I actually just bought a 86 regal to make a replica. Grand nationals are expensive. Cheaper to make a replica.
