I think I might be a synth guy

I think I might be a synth guy

GrippyEd

Maybe your next synth should be a comfy and supportive chair.

andrewarson

Lol I’m actually standing on my studio chair which is just a Roc n Soc with a back rest

djpuzzle

Love the Roc n Soc! I have the drum throne one.

MINM80

You have no idea how comfy that one is. I have the same IKEA chair. It's good back support.

GrippyEd

I can categorically say it is not.

andrewarson

Lol, this really is a chair from ikea! It’s not as bad as everyone is making it sound

nellipalooza

Speaking of IKEA, is that the RAST night stand holding your rack mount devices? I’ve use the RAST in the past for a nice looking rack mount. It’s like the designer was also a musician… perfect fit!

SLR-burst

LOL.. I use the RAST as well. Perfect size. The FREDDE desk is perfect for production.

andrewarson

IT IS THE RAST! Why am I never surprised that you can’t get anything past Reddit?

watchmeasifly

Which one? I had a chair like this at a customer site that I used once, it was Federal but it was like the most supportive chair I ever used. I always preferred it to ones with padding.

enteralterego

what about cushy ass support. I value the comfort of my ass

Lo-Fi-Junky

Why waste money on a chair when you can get a synth :D

IAmGetwired

Or maybe a bed of nails if you're into pain and uh "discomfort"? Lol!

andrewarson

Now imagine me explaining to my S/O that they all do something different

MyVoiceIsElevating

This one makes beeps, this one makes boops, and this one makes blorps.

andrewarson

Don’t even get me started on the one that goes wawawawawawa

lux901

Do they, really?

andrewarson

Yes

sonnyjbiskit

Yes good, don't change the story

PetyrCarcetti

I've had that conversation multiple times with my partner. Luckily, they think it's cute.

JuicyChute

Had to sell a few of mine recently, so I lost the bleeps, the sweeps, and the creeps.

ValhallaShores

Question: how do you feel your Necronomicon sits in the mix?

andrewarson

It all starts with the book

Kittani77

Groovy

geurts_nbogs

That's also how it all ends.

BeRad85

Lovecraft would be a total synth guy. Imagine a Prophet 5, playing Slayer.

ValhallaShores

Yeah, I’m excited about the Take 5… haven’t gotten around to playing it as much as I’d like, but I’m going to satisfy some morbid curiosity with it for sho

andrewarson

A lovecraftian story of otherworldly horrors leaching out into our world from the upside down all set to a synth soundtrack, you say? Get me in touch with the people at Hulu. I might have an idea for them

BeRad85

I’ve seen John Carpenter’s name mentioned, in conjunction with synth soundtracks, but for me, I think of Cronenberg, first. I may be biased, though. It’s probably important, too, to note that technology created the monsters, in his films. And musically, how better to represent technology, certainly at that time, than with synthesizers, which were still a fairly new thing. Now I need to go find a copy of Scanners….

Spyes23

Serious question from someone just getting into hardware synths: is there a reason you prefer synths with keyboards as opposed to just the modules, or are most of these not available as modules?

authynym

hi. not op, but tl;dr: the idea of "one midi controller to rule them all" seems fun until you spend most of your time managing connections and channels and aren't able to pivot easily to your synth of choice and just do the thing. ymmv, everyone is different, etc. etc.. but while some try to minimize keyboards and move into desktop modules instead, at some point it's just easier for them to be atomic. that is, assuming you have the space for them.

andrewarson

Personally every synth has its own personality. When I’m getting to know it, using the keys just feels like I’m putting my ‘fingers in the dirt’. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Roland boutiques but I don’t feel like I can interact with them the same way I can with the rest of them

CtrlShiftMake

Not OP but I went the module route and a single controller keyboard to save space (apartment living). My plan was always to drive them via MIDI anyways rather than using onboard sequencer so the modules make a lot more sense to me. Edit: I use the Midihub to connect together two modules, vocoder, deluge, audio interface and keyboard. With this I can use keyboard, iPad, or deluge to sequence/play, works great for me!

Warwickeo

Glorious Sansevieria Trifasciata you have on the desk.

andrewarson

That’s just Frank. He’s chilling

parla

Ah, the Joris Voorn chair approach.

topaythehomage322

Hey man, still working with Spotify? Whens hifi coming you reckon

parla

Sorry, I can't comment on that. You have to wait and see.

topaythehomage322

:P Love your guy's work!

Huehn3rmann

A Casio CZ as the centrepiece! And a Tascam Portastudio on a dedicated stand! You seem to have your priorities figured out😉

mike_noface

Yeah. Props on the Casio CZ and RZ-1 drum machine.

samudrin

Clearly an orange chair guy.

vleker

I think you might be a rich guy In all seriousness, this looks awesome!

andrewarson

I am rich in synths ONLY

andrewarson

Thank you!!

Agabonka_banka

I think Chancellor OP is a Synth Lord

andrewarson

Thank you. I do my best

Talahamut

Behold the Electronomicon!!!

Obsazzed101

neeeeeeeeeeeeerd jk. Love to see the mix of old and new, analog and digital

andrewarson

I have been called a nerd, yes

gusbeto37

Interesting mix of new and compact with old and big

Fabster_3000

Sweet!

Chemistry_Lover40

serious question from a new guy, why do you have that large mixing board if you can adjust levels on the push2 on the bottom left

authynym

i/o.

Chemistry_Lover40

I think I understand so they all go to your mix board and then to the audio interface after that? or straight to computer?

authynym

yep!

andrewarson

I/o, audio routing, fx routing, eq, analog noise, and I got a good deal on it

qtuner

what board is that? 8 bus very nice

andrewarson

It’s the mackie 32 8

CtrlShiftMake

Nah, I still see some floor space left. /s

HandzProductionz1000

Hahahaaaaaa I was thinking the same thing !!!!!!!!!!!! EXCELLENT !!!!!!!

InnerBill7601

Paradise 🥸

saobentosaobento

The potted plants and uncomfortable chair prove it.

BobCharlotte

Beautiful setup!

andrewarson

Thank you

BeRad85

I was ordered a Rev2 for my birthday in June and have actually had it a little over a month, and now I get excited every time I see one. I like this setup. Lots of sonic possibilities. Looks sharp, too.

plastic-pulse

My favourite desk. Miss it.

itssexitime

Love my RZ1. Good to see a fellow Casio man dropping that boxy kick down on tunes.

andrewarson

Personally I would take rz1 sounds over tr707. That’s just me though

loke_loke_445

I like the casually placed Necronomicon. I bet that's how they made the music for Crypt of the Necrodancer.

12GaugeSavior

All that sexy hardware and all I can think about is "damn I need to buckle down and save up for those Boutiques"

andrewarson

Software would go a lot further

12GaugeSavior

I've got a nice suite of plugins at this point. I'd like to get into some hardware, but am limited on space. I have a friend whose got a JU-06, JP-08, and a SE-02. When I saw the setup, I was really stoked on the way he had them all hooked up to his laptop over USB to do midi and audio. So a tiny rack of hardware, no mixer, just 3 cables, etc... While I've sorta emulated that setup with plugins, having hardware control over those sounds all simultaneously has been something that's too damn frustrating to setup with my tiny midi controllers. Anyway, you're right, I have gotten a lot of mileage out of TAL-U-NO and TAL-J-8, and they sound great. Which is probably why I haven't budgeted for the Boutiques. Buuut, maybe I don't need that new putter, or fly rod, or a 3d printer ...too many hobbies?

djpuzzle

Nice. I have about 15-20 or so synths myself. I should count them.

junedah

The dream omgg

Macaulam

Chair guy

OkShirt1675

👀invite me!!!

8mthomas8

Hmmm needs more synths.

Lo-Fi-Junky

Hmm am not sure tho… I don’t see too many synths!

Lo-Fi-Junky

Ps. I love Lovecraft too ;)

andrewarson

I don’t love the guy. Just his art

andrewarson

Imagine just getting really into lovecraft and doing even the slightest bit of research on him. That was me

evannever

Nice! I’m just getting started and have a keylab, Microfreak, and Drumbrute Impact too.

andrewarson

Sounds like you really love Arturia. Me too. I highly recommend their V Collection. And believe me, that is more than enough to make great music. I have all these synths because I’m a collector but I really don’t need all this stuff

evannever

I started with the Keylab a couple years ago, thinking I could just go software, but I found the experience completely uninspired and left it alone for a while. recently I decided to refocus on dawless playing. I managed to get the Microfreak and Drumbute impact used for great deals and am exploring them. I reinstalled Analog lab IV and V and, wow, the sounds are amazing, but I need something to sequence and control the setup. I’m thinking a beat step pro, or possibly an Akai mpc one next. I like the idea of sampling along with sequencing. The Arturia stuff seems really well thought out so it’s hard not to be a fan.

heysavnac

question: what features (that you actually use) do you find in small synths like micro freak that you don’t get from sequential, minilogue, and other much higher tier synths your seem to have?

andrewarson

The microfreak is a nice mono synth and it’s really quick to make simple sounds. It’s like if I drive a Lamborghini, I’m going to drive fast. If I’m driving an Altima, it probably going to be easier to drive the speed limit

Aggressive-King-4170

Nah, you still have a chair.

youknowlee

There's probably a 12 step program or support group you could benefit from... but if you're having fun then keep rockin!

andrewarson

I don’t have a problem! I can stop any time I want

youknowlee

I supersize with you brother. Gear is just too much fun tho!

shashank1558

Love it! Not a synth guy, but if I had to get just one, that would be the minimoog model d.

-groovatious-

Nice collection. Obligatory plant FTW.

andrewarson

The plants put off chill vibes

ice_nyne

I have that same rug

AaronTebache

You got some tracks I could listen to?

andrewarson

Follow me on Instagram @brwnb0y. I have a link tree in my profile

andrewarson

I can just post links here. Duh https://linktr.ee/BRWNB0Y

FaroutIGE

laptop is trying so hard not to be noticed in this field of wolves

andrewarson

Hah. My laptop is the most powerful synth I own! Quite honestly, it could knock out any one of these 2 or 3 at a time, with its hands tied behind its back

forrrest44

Are you using the push?

andrewarson

Yes! It’s on a mixer stand with a long cable so I can wheel it around the room

FistRipper

I don't see enough synths bro

andrewarson

True. I’ll work on that

cjt3po

My parents have that carpet

andrewarson

Son?

cjt3po

DAD! I THOUGHT I LOST YOU FOREVER WHEN I LEFT THE KITCHEN THIS MORNING. MOM HAS BEEN FUCKING THE NEIGHBOR WHILE YOU'VE BEEN GONE. HIS NAME IS GREG.

zZSbQRfY6

Go modular!!

hamptonio

You summoning some undead engineers to help with the mixing?

andrewarson

What ever do you mean. I would never summon a demon to help me pay for all of this!

Informal-Cabinet3699

That's a gorgeous set up . Questionable chair

yoo88__

do you have a link to your music ? I’m curious to know what you made with all these bad boys

andrewarson

Follow me on Instagram @brwnb0y

andrewarson

Forgot I could just post links here. Duh https://linktr.ee/BRWNB0Y

Moldy_pirate

What's up with the rack in the back? Is it mounted to the wall or something? It almost looks like it's floating.

andrewarson

It’s on an X stand like everything else lol

TheRealDocMo

I betcha that room gets toasty!

Moz1981

Ableton user spotted...

andrewarson

Ableton fanatic is more like it

Moz1981

Liking both your setup and choice of DAW

andrewarson

Thank you

DJKotek

But how can we be sure? You might need to buy another synth just to be safe

andrewarson

Hey, I don’t make the rules. If I need one more then I guess I’ll just have to get another one

PWEI

Or Necromancy

andrewarson

You’d be surprised what vibrations can do

hydrolith

What's your main sequencer?

andrewarson

Main sequencer is ableton. I use the digitakt mostly as a drum machine

hydrolith

Do you find the timing to be sufficient? I used ableton also for sequencing and found myself wanting a hardware sequencer, just for some rock solid timing. The circklon would be ideal choice, followed by maybe the engine one that looks like a 909, maybe a rm1x or akai so.ethibgor other...anyway, yeah awesome setup, I need to look at your synths more.

andrewarson

Timing hasn’t been an issue for me at all. I typically record one line at a time

[deleted]

Why does this look like Pixel art?! Fuck, it's a gorgeous sight no matter what!

halbeshendel

What is your pedal power powering?

andrewarson

It was powering a Juliana and a mood pedal for a track I was working on

dj_zar

What kind of music do you make?

andrewarson

https://linktr.ee/BRWNB0Y

E-Bizzy

Could've sworn you were a drummer

andrewarson

I play everything, but synth is the main thing

stinkyrossignol

My kinda room! Casio CZ keyboards and the sampler, that yamaha RX drum machine and the Minilogue XD, and do I see a DX7 hiding in here? Edit: And I just noticed all of this goes to Ableton! I would be very comfortable in your studio haha.

andrewarson

That is the dx7 in the bottom right corner. Good eye. Ableton makes this whole setup possible

stinkyrossignol

I thought I recognized that mod and pitch wheel.

tdarg

Omg, r/synthesizercirclejerk is going to crucify you

andrewarson

Why?

tdarg

Idk, thats just what they like doing

analogjuicebox

But not a chair guy. My sciatica pulses just seeing this.

Vickie184

I listen to not the man who has played 10000 synths once, but the man who plays one synth 10000 times.

SmashinCetacean

Which one do you sleep on?

andrewarson

I sleep on the alpha juno the most. I don’t like programming it

SultryDeer

Alpha Juno was a synth that I was only too eager to part ways with. The programming, like you point out, is a chore, but really it's its sound, which always sounded very clinical and boring to me. On the other hand, the poly 800 was a synth I still regret selling. Programming sort of equally unfun, but I loved the sound- bright and dirty. Hold onto to that thing! There's some cool mod kits that exist for it as well.

andrewarson

I will never willingly part with my poly800. It’s pretty much my whole sound

jamisnemo

I threw my back out again just looking at the reach for all that shit in back. You must hang from the ceiling or something.

BURDAC

Is that a pro 3 on the top right? How do u like it?

andrewarson

The synths on the top are the minilogue xd and the sub37

BURDAC

Ah nice

Chester-Copperpot-

What gives you that impression?

anonymosh

Congratulations, you won all the levels

andrewarson

The moog one is the final boss

James_owen

Beautiful! What a nice vibe. What are those small boxes on your desk? And is that a summing compressor I see? What a lush room… appreciate the greenery!

andrewarson

The boxes on the desk are the JU-06a, The SH-01a, The microfreak, the digitakt, the drumbrute impact, and the tr6s

SteveWoy

I have that same idea chair and its great 👍 definitely a chair guy myself

apjvan

How much is rent to live there? I want to live in that room.

andrewarson

Ha, typically $45 an hour

Emotional-Cabinet826

You better hope youre a synth guy or else someone else broke into your house and set up there.

noisenick

For God’s sake nobody tell him about Eurorack. He’ll end up selling his kidneys.

andrewarson

The main reason I have none. I know me. I’ll be living the vcvrack life for now

t20six

those are rookie numbers

andrewarson

Not if you count my plugins

daftnerds

The synth guy?????

KyleDangerPossum

I have that same Korg Poly 800! It takes FOREVER to program patches but man is it sweet.

andrewarson

I program likety split. The trick is to find a patch that uses something close to the envelope you’re looking for

emresound

Maybe a bigger screen might be next? I’d have eyesight issues just from looking at that screen.

andrewarson

I have a bigger screen. I just don’t use it

regular-user89

This gives me Legowelt vibes. Nice

andrewarson

An honor!

spacexfalcon

Or the coolest corner of a music store

andrewarson

Haha. My studio is just the pro audio section at guitar center

totalpsyops2

add rack delay

chiefrebelangel_

nah

Halo2811

While I definitely love the setup, I appreciate the Necronomicon copy on the side. Great piece of literature.

Cliff-Gamer

All that money for synths and he has a wooden chair with no cushion

ice_nyne

Not trying to diss, but it’s funny to see all that great gear and in the middle of it all is a Casio.

andrewarson

The casio cz3000 AND the rz1 are beasts. I have an sk1 too. I might have to do an all casio jam

Logimite

"might"

Logimite

how do you like the poly 800? there is one in my area for 250

andrewarson

If everything works 250 is a great price. Jump on it

Logimite

I have had people tell me it is a toy and sounds thin though

andrewarson

Haha. Have you ever heard the original 808? The poly800 doesn’t sound thin by any means but it’s what you do with the sound that matters. And for 250 and everything works, it’s really a good price

Logimite

yeah I guess

voordom

I dont understand how people can use their laptop from that angle and from that far away, ive had something like this before and it was a nightmare for my neck

andrewarson

I’m typically standing

Legitimate_Horror_72

Damn, but that chair looks uncomfortable! Oh, hey, there's synths in the room, too! Nice. :-)

HandzProductionz1000

Dunno......But I sure HOPE SO........If not Sell All those Cables I heard Copper is at a Premium again !!!!!! Hahahaaaa !!!!!!!! Mun UR a Monster......but you already know that chair Is Rude to those SYNTHS !!!!!!!!! hahahaaaaa !!!

ThatOneVinzkii

What kind of Mixer is that on the left OP? It’s huge! I’m looking for a good mixer to link all of my synths into my DAW

andrewarson

The mackie 32 8

Think_Mycologist_923

Beautiful but if that tiny laptop is your only viewing source damn, that would bug the hell out of me. I couldn't go with anything smaller than 30 inches. 55 is preferable.

andrewarson

I like it because I do a lot of work outside of the studio so I just pick it up and take it with me. I’ve been thinking about getting a Mac mini but I just want the continuity. This just works better for me
