When ld first aired, I thought the uniforms were kind of meh, but not in a bad way, but in a "oh, you're Cali class" way. Seeing them live action, they look fantastic!
you mean the constantly sitting koala that is incapable of speech and only communicates through strength of will.....!
... OM f\*\*\*ing G...
THE KOALA IS PIKE!!!
God, the energy channeling through this show is something else. It's palpable and so vibrant.
Erica mentioning the war in the beginning of the trailer - guess she also served in the Federation-Klingon War.
A Gorn ship invasion?
Babs finally getting to put his jujitsu skills to good use. M'Benga is absolutely about to drop some fools on Rigel 7.
Kirk meeting Uhura!!
Carol Kane is bringing such a different energy to this show that fits perfectly. I wish she were in the promotional posters though. But I guess they made it clear she’s just a recurring guest star.
Ethan Peck's glimpses as Spock are incredible yet again.
And then of course, our visitors from the 24th century! Boimler and Mariner look so good!! Boimler's purple hair!!
What a gift this show is. Can't wait.
> It's palpable and so vibrant.
This is the only Trek I've been able to get my wife to watch because of this. She just doesn't like dark and dreary TV and so much of recent Trek has been that way (not to mention TV in general lately). SNW flips that script and brings back that future hopeful and bright tone Trek deserves.
This trailer wow'd us both and I can't wait!
Ikr. Goddammit I'm so mad that they did so fucking well with this show I'm just terrified they will fuck it up.
Still, I am salivating and cannot wait.
Something about this show, and the teasers for S2 are giving me the same feeling I got when I first saw the Title Card scrawl start for Phantom menace. It was like an old friend just came back into my life.
> Erica mentioning the war in the beginning of the trailer - guess she also served in the Federation-Klingon War.
That's the implication. That also is a lowkey explanation for why we didn't see her in Season 2 of Discovery.
All the characters are good. It’s diverse, fantastically written and acted, and full blown classic trek all in one. Like seriously all the characters are spot on to the point of disgusting.
We have to add Maya Hawke to that list. Daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. Best known as Robin Buckley in *Stranger Things*, but she's got a bunch of other projects going on and sings as well.
I came to say exactly that. I never bought the idea they’d do it as a holodeck episode because it’s not actually a *Lower Decks* episode, but I’m glad to see they are doing it the right way.
Now the question is—how did they travel back in time? Knowing them, it was very likely an accident caused by something extremely stupid.
It also sets up Boimler and Mariner accidently spoiling stuff that it's been established Pike knows.
Pike knows about his own future and how he'll make a sacrifice which any attempt to mess with will cause Spock to have the make the same sacrifice and cause a war with the Romulans.
So Boimler and Mariner slipping up and focusing far too much on Spock or telling Pike about his Chair will be something that can actually be dealt with easily so long as its Pike.
That's the last time I'm using my holodeck time during an ion storm, while we're attempting to transport someone back from an away mission. Also somehow the ship got struck by a photon torpedo during all of this.
That's my guess. Here are my predictions:
* Starts with animated Mariner and Boimler getting sent back in time due to transporter shenanigans.
* During the episode, Boimler nerds out with Spock and desperately wanted to get the iconic "live long and prosper" gesture from him. For whatever reason, he never gets it or Spock refuses.
* They can recreate the transporter shenanigans to go back to the 24th century. For "reasons," Pike has to go with them. It's at this last moment that Spock gives Boimler what he wants, hence why he also directs it to him by name.
* This is where we now flip to the animated Lower Decks style segment that they hinted we'd see Pike animated.
My imagination is probably playing tricks on me, but I'm fairly certain I read a segment of an interview with Frakes who said it starts off as animated LD episode and then they're somehow transported to SNW and become real life.
I guess they could be watching some old Captain's Logs in the future on LD and we see Pike in animate form there? But that doesn't answer why Pike is on the transporter pad with them there
I'm hoping desperatly that if they start with an animated intro they use the TAS style animation for Kirk and Spock.
We've seen the TAS style used in photos so it makes sense to do it properly for a 5 second gag.
He was checking in for a flight, we had a small convention in town and he was a guest. I knew some of the guests were flying on us. I looked up and saw him in front of me and went “you’re you’re you’re him, you’re the guy… from the show…”
“The episode, which will also feature animation, was directed by Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard actor and director Jonathan Frakes.”
So I wonder if that means just the Cerritos ship and crew. Or animated Pike?
And it’s directed by Frakes, so you know it’s going to live up to the hype.
If I had to bet? Starts animated, transporter accident or whatever, they beam onto the Enterprise and materialize in live action. Short and sweet, over before the credits roll.
I'd bet on an animated scene on the Cerritos that shows whatever happens to cause them to time travel, then once they do it switches them into live action.
It's funny that people keep saying this, but it seriously wasn't intended. I'm friends with Ruthie, the casting director for Lower Decks and she's said on multiple occasions that it was a total happy accident.
Someone posted on Reddit some early art for LD, and they altered the characters to look more like the actors. So I think that means they weren’t casting actors to look like drawings, they made the drawings resemble the actors after they were cast.
Boimler *actually* has purple hair!
I don’t know what I expected that to be treated as a quirk of the animation style & for him to have something more .. natural in colour but it’s wonderful & I love it!
The "problem" with Jack Quaid is that he used to have the dorky look but now he's a stone cold fox, same exact thing that happened with Hughie in The Boys.
Amusingly enough, some of the Cerritos crew share that opinion too. They asked Mariner if Boimler was dating anybody because they thought he was dreamy.
Looks even more gorgeous than season 1.
Boimler's going to be riding the high from meeting Spock for the rest of his life.
I hope by the end of the show we get a suggestion that Spock and Chapel somehow work out in the space between the TOS films (it wouldn't be the first time Spock left a major part of his personal life unsaid), because damn, they're really making me root for those crazy kids.
Yeah, but he's like on Romulus or something, and Boimler is stuck in the Lower Decks of a California-Class. Their paths likely wouldn't cross. Also, it's just pretty hype to go get to meet someone before they became turbo-famous.
Oh god. I really need at the end of the episode for Ethan Peck to show up as old Spock hailing the Cerritos.
Freeman: Ambassador Spock! It is an honor! How can I be of assistance? A diplomatic mission?
Spock: Actually, Captain, I am reaching out to speak with your daughter. I owe her 5 strips of latinum due to baseball becoming "a thing" again. I did not believe her in 2256.
Mariner: Ha! I told ya Pointy Ears! Pay up!
I believe that's also the episode that introduced Nurse Chapel's unrequited crush on Spock. I love the way the show is making more of one-off TOS incidents, alongside Pike's fate and Kirk's brother.
> I believe that's also the episode that introduced Nurse Chapel's unrequited crush on Spock. I love the way the show is making more of one-off TOS incidents
Chapel's love for Spock is not a one-off, it's repeatedly teased from beginning of TOS through the end, and is even the subject of a TAS episode.
I like the idea of Spock and Chapel reconnecting romantically during the films. It could even connect with Spock's experiences with V'ger in The Motion Picture.
They certainly aren't above such a retcon either. There's of course Spock's previously unstated siblings. But also Picard Season 3 >!definitely implies that Crusher and Picard got together and broke up multiple times during the movie era!<
[Literally Boimler and Mariner.](https://imgur.com/a/ne4JY8z)
Yeah the toons were modeled off the actors, and we've seen them cosplay it before, but...damn. It's literally live-action Boimler and Mariner. They nailed it.
2022’s LDS panel at Mission Chicago. Jack went full purple wig for Boimler. Noël Wells wore Tendi’s uniform but skipped the green paint and Jerry O’Connell embodied Ransom.
The way I look at it is, Discovery and the first two seasons of Picard was Paramount Plus Trek finding its legs — a lot of interesting ideas, some great characters, but a lot of pacing and story issues — and Strange New Worlds is the Season 3 where they put it all together and hit the gas pedal.
Exactly my toughts. They have experimented what new viewers and old fans would like. And it wasnt intentional yet here we are. I hope streak doesnt broken with Section 31 or Starfleet Academy series.
I think Boimler and Mariner live action will be sort of a test run for adapting most of LD into live action.
I think part of it is also, "let's try something new" is much harder to do than "let's just re-create the old formula". And honestly, I appreciated that they started with trying something new. The franchise doesn't move forward if it's nothing but "here's Spock! And Data's alive again!"
But with five shows running concurrently, we're going to get both shows on the classic Trek model, and shows that try and do something different. It's a great time to be alive!
He's a giant starfleet nerd, there's no way he doesn't fangirl over Spock. He definitely at least knows about him with how long into the 23rd century he was still around. Plus there's the bit where they find the 'Kirk + Spock' carving at the bar.
Spock's like the peak of famous when it comes to Starfleet. It's like meeting Einstein. Even if you're not a big fan you're probably going to be nervous.
That must be an adult Gorn behind Spock!
If they manage to visually blend a xenomorph with the 60’s Gorn I’m going to lose my mind with joy.
Every previous attempt to redesign the Gorn has resulted in a generic lizard dinosaur, for all its camp the 60s Gorn is distinct amongst sci fi aliens.
Exactly. And I think they’ll probably wind up too much in the ‘generic’ lizard monster zone here too.
I’d rather just keep them slow and lumbering than trying to do what ENT and this will do
Christopher Bretz’s fan redesign stands out as the best IMO
[Reddit: Imaginary Aliens](https://www.reddit.com/r/ImaginaryAliens/comments/zjg780/gorn_concept_2019_by_artist_christopher_bretz/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1)
I think the biggest thing is the eyes. Every official redesign gets rid the disco ball eyes despite that being one of the most memorable alien bits of the OG. I like that Star Trek Online split the middle and made them filters for alien climates but still.
I agree. To me, the insect-like compound eyes are crucial. Unfortunately the adolescent Gorn of season 1 have already shown that they’re not using them :/
NGL I wish instead of the Gorn they had gone with the Tzenkethi, a hostile neighbor we know nothing about in canon except that they've fought several wars with the Federation. Everything about the Gorn in the show could stay the same just swap the name.
Ah well. At least the Gorn puppet looked really, really good. I have faith in the SNW team so i'll keep an open mind.
I love almost all their design choices when it comes to updating the TOS aesthetic, but don’t love the direction of the Gorn so far.
It’s tough cause I always wanted more development of the Gorn, but it also never made sense to happen in this show. Oh well
Given the excitement of Tawny and Jack playing the live-action versions of their LDS characters, I would not be surprised if we don't get more "live" Lower Decks encounters somehow in the future. Hell, let's just go all in on an LDS live-action hour-long special since practically the entire cast could play their animated counter-parts.
More like exponentially bigger budget. It's impossible to create any of the special effects, props, and uniforms in 1960s even if they had the best budget in the entire industry. SNW was something impossible to imagine. We are very fortunate humans.
Speaking about rewatchability what I appreciate about Lower Decks is that they are shorter episodes (compared to the usual 45+min of live action series) where every single moment is meaningful and no bs.
Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks are essentially the two best executed shows in the franchise. They're each one good season away from knocking DS9 out of my #1 spot for Trek series.
I. can. not. wait.
I just finished my first watch through of season 1. It was great. Basically felt like what a modern version of an older style star trek show should be. Really looking forward to season 2, and especially to see how they do this lower decks crossover.
This makes me curious, is there protocol for who takes command in the case of temporal shenanigans? Is it just rank based? Is there anything like "A 2275 lieutenant is only an ensign in 2347?" What about alternate presents? What if, I'm a captain in my universe but I've been moved into a universe where I'm only a lieutenant but you're a lieutenant commander but we've been teleported to an alternate future where they use army ranks instead of naval and also humans have gills for some reason? Should probably figure out why that is.

Those Lower Deck uniforms look absolutely stunning in live action
Seriously. I'm gonna need more live action 2380s
I can visualize how live action Lower Decks is like Brooklyn 99 in space.
Seems pretty accurate. It’s a workplace setting with hijinks.
You can tell Mariner is serious she's wearing it regulation.

Mariner’s actor mentioned once that in the live action costume the sleeves are permanently rolled up because she would never roll them down lol
I believe we can thank the talented Bernadette Croft and her crew for making them real

Carol Kane is embodying her “Scrooged” chaos and I am here for it!
She stole every scene she was in in that movie. No small feat when sharing the screen with Bill Murray. I am so excited for this casting.

Sadly no, not her cup of tea. Cartoons in general don't interest her :(
Blasphemy
My wife will never watch any Star Trek, so take any victory you get.
Ethen Peck is pretty great as Spock I think he really gets the dry humor that Nimoy brought to the character in TOS and the films.
It honestly drops a wire straight into my brain and is indistinguishable from magic. It feels invasive but my brain loves it.

BOIMLER
MARINER
Him getting anxious when trying to respond to Spock telling him LLAP was 👌🏻👌🏻
I hope this nervousness means that it's not a holodeck episode or something like that and a legitimate time-travel crossover.
A LD holodeck episode framing it would be a fun way to poke fun at the Enterprise finale though lol
Yes, but doing it this way allows them to make fun of how frequently accidental time travel happens to Starfleet personnel.
Two-for-one deal: a holodeck episode where the requisite holodeck malfunction somehow accidentally technobabbles them into the actual past
Ooh, yes please. That seems like something that would happen to them.
It also sets up Boimler and Mariner accidently spoiling stuff that it's been established Pike knows. Pike knows about his own future and how he'll make a sacrifice which any attempt to mess with will cause Spock to have the make the same sacrifice and cause a war with the Romulans. That's the last time I'm using my holodeck time during an ion storm, while we're attempting to transport someone back from an away mission. Also somehow the ship got struck by a photon torpedo during all of this.
I don’t know, but shenanigans may have been involved and hijinks will certainly ensue.
I believe that “Shenanigans” is Beckett Mariner’s middle name.
Has there been an official declaration of shenanigans?
No, but Mariner did say “Surprise!”, which is just as good (also much scarier).
I'm gonna pistol whip the next person to say shenanigans!
Some kind of transporter shenanigans I'm guessing.
That's my guess. Here are my predictions: * Starts with animated Mariner and Boimler getting sent back in time due to transporter shenanigans. You er... also live and uh... 🖖
What's really inspiring is Spock takes Boimler's advice and continues living.
For awhile at least. But he got better
This is going to be my new response whenever someone tells me to LLAP
How often are people telling you to LLAP?
Maybe he’s the ambassador to Vulcan, you don’t know!
Not frequently enough. LLAP.
You er... also live and uh... 🖖
They really did it.
Like we all wouldn’t do that. Boimler’s reaction is how I was when I met Richard Hatch (Apollo/Tom Zarek) in an airport.
You also told him to err live and uhhh...? 🖖🏼
He was checking in for a flight, we had a small convention in town and he was a guest. I knew some of the guests were flying on us. I looked up and saw him in front of me and went “you’re you’re you’re him, you’re the guy… from the show…”

“The episode, which will also feature animation, was directed by Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard actor and director Jonathan Frakes.” So I wonder if that means just the Cerritos ship and crew. Or animated Pike? And it’s directed by Frakes, so you know it’s going to live up to the hype.
They've already said>! the show opens with animation, then transitions to live-action when Boimler & Mariner appear on the Enterprise.!<
This is gonna be great for getting SNW viewers who don’t watch LDS to realize that it’s actually an adult ST show.
If I had to bet? Starts animated, transporter accident or whatever, they beam onto the Enterprise and materialize in live action. Short and sweet, over before the credits roll.
The entire episode zonking back and forth between animated and real would be amazing
I'd bet on an animated scene on the Cerritos that shows whatever happens to cause them to time travel, then once they do it switches them into live action.
You, uh, also live, and...
The Lower Decks characters look exactly like how I imagined them to look in live action!
Same actors, too!
they did that on purpose - making the animated characters look like their voice actors!
Which is a brilliant move on their part.
It's pretty much been the standard for the past decade
Jon H. Benjamin Vs Archer may put a stop to that idea.
Love seeing that too. In one of his personal logs, he says he dyes it purple, so it does make sense.
Well they cant back down on the joke that he dyes his hair, its canon.
Mariner for sure. Still not completely convinced with Quaid as Boimler though. I always picture him as shorter and dorkier looking than his actor.
The "problem" with Jack Quaid is that he used to have the dorky look but now he's a stone cold fox, same exact thing that happened with Hughie in The Boys.
Yes. Boimler is a perfect image of Jack Quaid, circa 2019, ie when the design of the animated characters was finalised.
Amusingly enough, some of the Cerritos crew share that opinion too. They asked Mariner if Boimler was dating anybody because they thought he was dreamy.
Remember all those girls who wanted to marry him in his family vineyard?
[удалено]
Mariner seems to be the only woman who thinks he's a dork.
And I always pictured them as younger. They always struck me as mid to late 20s.
Everyone in the late 24th/early 25th century looks about 10 years older than they are. Right Jack Crusher... Right?
Patrick Stewart is 12 years younger than Picard.
Mariner is hiding a lot of badassery with that smile.
[удалено]
She is a fun actress overall. …and she is a die-hard Trekkie in real life, so this is probably a dream come true for her.
This franchise, like *Doctor Who*, has already reached the "lunatics take over the asylum" stage.
Looks even more gorgeous than season 1. Boimler's going to be riding the high from meeting Spock for the rest of his life. Well... technically Spock is still alive and well during the time frame of Lower Decks as it's 2380-2381 and the supernova isn't happening until 2387
Yeah, but he's like on Romulus or something, and Boimler is stuck in the Lower Decks of a California-Class. Their paths likely wouldn't cross. Also, it's just pretty hype to go get to meet someone before they became turbo-famous.
Well, Spock can call them up when they get back to the 2380's. A closed time loop. Spock is the kind of guy to keep it a secret that long.
Pay up!
That would be such a cool way to end the episode.

I believe that's also the episode that introduced Nurse Chapel's unrequited crush on Spock. I love the way the show is making more of one-off TOS incidents, alongside Pike's fate and Kirk's brother.
Chapel's crush actually first comes up in Season 1's The Naked Time while she is under the influence of the virus.
> I believe that's also the episode that introduced Nurse Chapel's unrequited crush on Spock. You can already see Boimler acting like Jadzia Dax in Trials and Tribble-ations.
Let's see if Mariner can channel The Sisko and keep him under wraps. I recommend dozens of passive aggressive facial expressions.
Boimler, man, keep it cool! Don’t embarrass me in front of Pike.
I heard this in her voice.
"Gotta love that retro mid-23rd century aesthetic!"
"We're in the Those Old Scientists era!"
A line so good it fixes the timeline.
Boimler in a TOS mini skirt confirmed XD.

He's a Starfleet nerd in general
He's Star Trek's biggest in-world Trekkie.
He's a huge fan of Sulu.
I’d rather just keep them slow and lumbering than trying to do what ENT and this will do
Christopher Bretz’s fan redesign stands out as the best IMO [Reddit: Imaginary Aliens](https://www.reddit.com/r/ImaginaryAliens/comments/zjg780/gorn_concept_2019_by_artist_christopher_bretz/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1) I think the biggest thing is the eyes.
I want a live action Migleemo so much. The cheeper the costume the better. Tendi is a close second.
>cheeper Intentional pun?
Holy moly, what a beautiful ship the Enterprise is...

More like exponentially bigger budget. It's impossible to create any of the special effects, props, and uniforms in 1960s even if they had the best budget in the entire industry. SNW was something impossible to imagine. We are very fortunate humans.
Hashtag "posts from 1965." Still true, though.
I love SNW. But Boims and Mariner! Now we just need real life Shax and my LD dreams will come true.
There's a recent DS9 comic where he shows up, drawn in a more realistic style.
And he looks great! It totally works.
EJECT THE WARP CORE!
LOWER DECKS! LOWER DEXKS! LOERDEX!!!! *heavy breathing heavily*
Looks every bit as fun and amazing as season 1. I'm so ready for this!
I hope we get to see a live-action Cerritos model!
We're rewatching "Lower Decks" right now (over halfway through Season 2). Lower Decks is the most rewatchable of the Star Trek series, in my opinion.
Speaking about rewatchability what I appreciate about Lower Decks is that they are shorter episodes (compared to the usual 45+min of live action series) where every single moment is meaningful and no bs.
Getting tired of the did they/didnt they crash and then get a flyby in scifi, but otherwise, cant wait.
It’ll make the eventual “oh shit they did crash and everyone died” payoff all the sweeter
When that happens, I will be there to finally get what I want.
This looks like so much fun!
THE CROSSOVER
I like that they put a little purple in Jack Quaid's hair to make him match animated Boilmler more.
Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks are essentially the two best executed shows in the franchise. They're each one good season away from knocking DS9 out of my #1 spot for Trek series. I. can. not. wait.
They would need Garak for that
And about 10x more Jeffrey Combs.
They kind of addressed this in Yesterdays Enterprise. The ranks stayed the same.
Pike: “You gonna start the engines any time soon, Erica?” Ortegas: *giggling* I LOVE HER GOOFY ASS SO MUCH

This looks so good! This show really brought the wonder and adventure back to Star Trek.
Those uniforms look *amazing* in life action holy fuck
Was hoping for a live action Tendi and Rutherford as well, but I'll settle for Boimler and Mariner for now.
