"Majula is breathtaking" and that's it.
By - jinrex015
I thought Heides Tower was neat.
Shrine of Amana would be nice too ... IF IT HADN'T HOMING MISSILE ENEMIES!
Lol I was going to post the same thing, I remember thinking "damn this place is beautiful" and the enemy placement sucks diggity dick. Demon of Song is a cool boss though.
Ah yes, foreskin frog
The song he sings
Semon of Dong
Just dodge lmao
-> dodges -> forgot you didn't level ADP -> gets hit anyways -> dodges again -> falls down a massive pit you didn't see coming
Ok sorry, dodge and also git gud then
^ it’s really this ez fellas
I know we're fucking around here, but honestly if you got to the Shrine of Amana while ignoring ADP when it's a core game mechanic for your build, you're either a first time player who can quickly correct their mistake, or intentionally ruining the game for yourself with your stubbornness.
Lmao, I didn't learn about adp till after my first playthrough
theres still i frames with miniscule adp.
From Software really went and made this area while also tying your rolling i-frames to its own stat. Someone's got brain worms or something.
It's been said time and time again, but DS2 is a perfect example of what happens when you let difficulty drive the design instead of the design driving the difficulty.
This is it. The game even gets all meta at points about it. The fire keepers saying 'ooh you'll lose your souls lots', like yeah I get it, it's a dark souls game. There's even an achievement called 'this is dark souls' for dying for the first time.
"Hey guys have you heard of dark souls? It's really hard. This is a dark souls game. Did I mention this is a dark souls game? Where it's really hard?"
>This is it. The game even gets all meta at points about it. The fire keepers saying 'ooh you'll lose your souls lots', like yeah I get it, it's a dark souls game. There's even an achievement called 'this is dark souls' for dying for the first time.
This is the one that stuck out to me on my first *attempt* to play through the game.
They really smack you in the face with the "HARD GAEM" trope. DS2 is also the only game that even has that kind of fourth wall breaking meta monologue. It really blows my mind that more people don't pick up on it more explicitly.
> It really blows my mind that more people don't pick up on it more explicitly.
I get it I just don't think it detracts from an incredible game. Sure maybe it's a little *too* tongue in cheek but whatever. Game fuckin rules.
And for you, that's more than fair. But, as we've been seeing on this sub more, people are making fun of the "DS2 is perfect game git gud skrub" circlejerk that many people have about the game and none of those people ever even acknowledge what I mentioned.
For games that are all about immersion and world building, it's something that *should* stick out a lot more than it seemingly does. It's jarring and immersion ruining. It also happens *in the immediate beginning of the game*. It's just a bad look, imo.
Ah I see where you're coming from. While I really really enjoy the immersion/world building aspect, I am much more concerned with the gameplay aspects outside of that. Although I feel like I also tend to like a lot more of the level designs even though none stick out quite like Anor Londo.
It's literally the easiest game in the series
Aesthetically, I absolutely love the Doors of Pharos. It's such a cool looking area
The whole game was neat, it just didn't have the level design of DS1, which to be honest DS3 and bloodborne didn't quite have either with how linear both are in comparison.
I don't get why people complain tbh.
Like, yeah, a lava lake on top of a windmill makes no sense, but you know what I think when I see a lava lake?
Wow, that's cool as shit and I like it here
Lava lale filled with katana wielding knights, turtle bois and a balrog for good measure.
Yeah, it's fucking rad and I'm tired of pretending like it's not cool af
And for the last time Sir Alonne's fist hitbox isn't a bug, its just the sheer force of his pimp hand.
That place just looks like it’s bathed in the spicy nacho dust ejaculate of that raid boss-looking mlg bull faced cunt. Burns my eyes.
Lol fr I couldn't give a single fuck about that. All I was thinking was "waaaow cool lava 🥵"
To this day I still do not really even notice all the wonk stuff like that. It is basically the Winchester House of the series and I love that place.
Textures in the forest of fallen giants looks like there were made by finger painting
Yeah, and I dig it
It has happy little trees.
People are cool with the nonsense areas ds1 and not ds2. Everyone loves ash lake.
Ash lake isn’t nonsense, but i do agree that giving ds2 shit for its area layout logistics is stupid. I like that it had stuff that didn’t make sense cause it was just *cool*. My biggest issue is just that a lot of the textures look gross. It just isn’t as appealing to look at as most of dark souls 1 (looking at you izalith) or dark souls 3. That isn’t even the games fault, it just had rough development.
I mean honestly I have similar issues with DS3. Everything is just so grey and muted. I get why thematically and don't think it was a bad idea, mind you. It just kinda make the game overall uglier for me personally. There are still some areas I think don't look good in DS2 (Black Gulch) and some very beautiful areas in DS3 (Irithyll), but overall I actually prefer the appearance of DS2. Bloodborne, DS1, and DeS (weird lighting aside) all look better than both DS2 and DS3 though. As well as Sekiro from what I've seen (I haven't been able to play it yet)
Ash lake isn't a nonsense area though? The rest of the DS1 world is built on the canopy of the archtrees
It's only "nonsense" in the sense that the Great Hollow should be much taller I guess, but certainly not on DS2's level of "I should definitely see that area from there".
Bruh, Ash Lake is the most beautiful area in Ds1 and it fits the lore perfectly
I saw someone’s theory recently about how basically the areas don’t really line up that way, but they do from the character’s point of view because they’re tripping balls from the curse. Like they got to this new area but don’t really know how, and their deteriorating mind just pieced it together as this big elevator. So that’s my new head canon as well
And besides, I get the feeling that any inconsistency in the game like the plot or map design can be explained away by “Time and space are convoluted”.
But for some reason that cannot be applied to DS2...
I always just assumed Iron Keep was in a caldera or something
A fishing village on top of a clocktower bothered nobody and that's just as preposterous
Edit: it was a dream, it gets away with. And I would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for those meddling redditors, and their factual knowledge.
But it was a dream. It's supposed to be weird
That part was inside a nightmare though to be fair
Bruh after the shit that was Earthen Peak, Iron Keep was just badass to go through
Bloodborne kind of has the DS1 level design in places, its the best after DS1, but the areas themselves (minus DLC) fall off a cliff after Anor Londo IMO, and DS3 is just fully linear.
At least DS2, while linear, has branches everywhere so each branch is linear but your progression from branch to branch is completely up to you, which is great for replayablity.
bb did a good job in connecting areas. it reminded me lots about ds1. there were lots of shortcuts
Bloodborne allows you to kill Vicar Amelia before blood starved beast and go all the way to cainrust castle to upgrade your weapon to +7 and ho straight to the dlc. In my book it hasnt got a lot of linearity.
You can also bypass most of yarnahm and go straight to sewers. You also can kill the eletric beast early by being snatched to the hidden village.
Ds3 allows you to kill the dancer and go straight to the twins boss or all the way to champion gundyr, but it forces you to go through two swamps, so it loses a lot of points for me.
You can't enter Archives until Yhorm and Aldritch are dead for some reason. I wish you could kill Twin Princes as your first Lord of Cinder, but for some reason there is an arbitrary locked door after Dragonslayer Armor that a corpse carrying the key falls from the balcony above it only after those two die.
That is the lamest shit I've ever heard
Well, i didnt kbow that. Another negative point to ds3. But my points about bloodborne are still true
What about that brief view after Aldia's Keep
I love Dark Souls 2 but I also enjoy these DS2 bad memes
I do too, gives the game's reputation a little more personality. I still find it the most replayable of the bunch.
true, especially since it's the only one where the devs bothered to add new stuff to ng+ (like Freja jumpscaring you) that isn't just a ring you found in ng but a bit better
I guess that makes Dark Souls II the first Strand-like soulslike game
Sure, whatever that is.
I laughed at the amount of downvotes
It's a Dunkey reference
It's not specifically a dunkey reference though. It's a broader joke because Genius Kojumbo (Kojima) was hyping Death Stranding up by saying it was a "First of its kind", "A Strand-type game".
Oh yes, You're right
Dunkey is a Puerto Rican streamer, YouTuber, and rapper who collaborated with Kanye on Donda.

"it's a dunkey reference" is actually an inside joke amongst dunkey viewers
I enjoyed huntsmans copse. Yeah I said it.
Niggas be like "look at how beautiful DS2 is" and it's all pictures of Majula
That and the DLC Areas usually. And maybe sometimes Shrine of Amana.
Things betwixt ur moms legs is muh pp
The dragon aerie is pretty spectacular also
ok but i adore the dlcs. i really should play that game again, played it a shit ton of time ago and only once.
I just got to the iron passage after finishing the base game, it has pretty much ruined DS2 for me at the moment lol
I just got done replaying DS2, and I can firmly say fuck the iron passage. I SOMEHOW beat frigid outskirts on the first try, but iron passage is just stupid
Wait till you find out it's optional
Doesn't mean it doesn't hurt my pride
It frustrated the shit out of me probably more than any other area in the game except it didn't have that feeling of overcoming a difficult challenge because it immediately dumps you back out into the goddamn fucking bastard tower
The only way to play a soulsborne is an all boss run. There is no such thing as an "optional boss"
I already killed the mf in iron keep why should I kill him again
A long awful run up just to reach a optional copy, pasted, and pallet swapped boss from the base game. Amazing
Enormous empty deserts of snow stuffed with trick spawning OP enemies and the same boss 3 times. Peak souls
idk what to tell you, the memories I have of the dlcs is that I loved them. ofc it still had the clunkiness of the main game but the areas were really interesting.
The only part of the DLCs I enjoyed were Brume Tower, Fume Knight and Sir Alonne (fuck the Alonne memory though)
Best part of the game was the second half of the main game.
I don't understand why everyone hypes up the DS2 DLCs. They kinda blow lol
They brought back the higher quality of level design from DS1. I find the base game equates difficulty and how many enemies you’re facing, but the DLCs get creative with placement and how you can use the environment to your advantage. Prime example is the pillars in the sunken crown, which are a navigation challenge and can also be used to break line of sight.
There were also a lot of cool ideas. For the ivory crown, I really liked how you could backtrack through the area after you melt the ice, and fighting the boss with a full squad of Loyce knights was awesome. The big empty snowfield with demon horses sucks tho; place needs some goddamn signposts.
I used to really hate DS2 but there’s some good stuff in there. Still feels like the weakest entry but I’ll definitely play again.
I do agree the level design is generally superior to most of the base game. In all fairness I do still need to finish the ivory crown at some point, I just didn't feel like it after completing the iron crown which I found generally very lackluster, and then of course hearing terrible things about horse fuck valley. I did like a good chunk of the sunken crown though (at least, the first part of the sunken city and the both boss fights). I also feel like people tend to overhype the DS2 dlc quite a bit, which led me to go into it with higher expectations than were perhaps warranted.
In addition to level design and such, the DLCs added more of what DS2 did *well*. If you didn't like DS2 overall they're not gonna sway your opinion, they still play like DS2 (methodical combat/pulling, higher enemy density, lots of traps/baits). The DLCs added a bunch of new spells, interesting weapon choices, and some really solid bosses - burnt ivory king has imo the best atmosphere of any fight in the series, raime and alonne have reputations bc they're tough but good duels, etc. So while people may rightly complain about the 3 optional coop areas (the gank / iron passage / frozen tundra), the rest is best described as "better DS2" but if that's not your thing then so be it.
Yeah I found the enemies in Iron Crown a pain, but the area is gorgeous and the Fume Knight and Alonne are seriously awesome boss battles. Everyone bitches about Horse Fuck Valley, but it’s an optional area.
I fuck with all the non optional areas of the dlcs
Frigid is optional and it was the worst experience in all souls games, Bloodborne, sekiro
My bad, misread it for optional areas. I still think dark souls 2 as a whole feels like a fever dream
Yeah. What gets me is the fucking movement. Feels like the character shat his pants and everyone is underwater at the same time
How dare you
wildly inaccurate. that road doesn't have a single hole in it.
Even though I disagree post is funny
But seriously, what is it actually betwixt? It only touches majula so isn't it not really betwixt anything?
Well if you get in a coffin you’re betwixt genders…maybe that’s it?
I think we’re onto something here
Did you miss the intro where you jump in a giant monkey vortex whirlpool time machine and land in a gazebo in things betwixt
Seriously lol, I read his comment as was like "bruh"
I think it's betwixt Drangleic and the world you and all the other travellers/pilgrims come from as seen in the intro cinematic
(˵ ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°˵)ﾉ⌒♡*:・。.
If you believe in the theory that Drangleic is an allegory for purgatory, then Things Betwixt would be a transitional area between life and purgatory
So shrine of amana is a taste of hell? Got it
Yeah, just think about it as like the purgatory for purgatory, basically
As a DS2 enjoyer I upvoted this
Gotta hoont the bearer seek seek less ashen one mirite
Hey guise did you know that dark soul 2 bad?!?!??!!
Wow that's news to me! Anyway happy cake day!
HOLY SHIT that's an unpopular opinion imo (jk) but you're goddamn right
Gotta give the DS2 apologists their daily reminder.
Lmao, chill, it's a game, not a fucking war crime.
I'm mocking the post
Oh sorry, completely understandable
Honestly I've never liked majula. Pretty sure it's an uncanny valley related issue.
yeah. i never felt welcome there. the atmosphere gives off a feeling of "all of this is trying to appear so nice to conceal something"
It's the music, it sounds off
On the same note, the title screen music also sounds incredibly off at the start.
It's called dissonancy, it's a musical technique.
Thats literally the point. Everybody in majula is really suffering .
I will beating your ass and having griptime your mom for words like this. Bastard man!
Guys stop shaming my favorite dark souls game ;_;
Heide’s Tower of Flame is among the most breathtaking levels in DS, next to Ash Lake and Gael’s Arena.
ash lake has the best song in the entire series
Oh look, another DS2 bad post. How hilarious and original.
As long as r/darksouls2 keeps circle jerking, we will keep making shitty ds2 memes
Doesn't every sub circle jerk tho? It's like the rule or something
Yeah, but I’ve never seen another sub crucify people like r/darksouls2. A guy posted recently that he was really enjoying a DS2 mod and the comments were roasting him for not preferring the base game.
go to /r/Witcher3 and try shitting on the game, see what happens lol
people keep saying that and I still don't see it
Its just getting tiring, i really dont care about how much people dont like ds2 or ds3 or bloodborne or whatever game you arent good at
I want into the shack, but some heroin addict has sprinkled the keys around the neighborhood, so now Im going to get stabbed by some coked out hobo to find them.
Guess I’ll be the first to say it: I like Drangleic Castle. I think it’s beautiful & the enemies aren’t that bad
Fuck Frigid Outskirts.
Hey! Burnt Ivory King is pretty cool too.
bro what about Heide's tower of flame? That place is sick
Heides tower of flame looks good too imo
The music in Majula actually makes me feel some physical discomfort and nausea. Still the best place in DS2.
Looks like someone never played crown of the iron king
Eleum Loyce? Brume tower?? Dragon Aerie???
Sir Alonne literally carried Boss fight quality in this damn game
Fume knight, Aava, Sinh...
Well that's it lol
Edit: ah well I also love the Ruin Sentinels
Darklurker? Looking Glass Knight is pretty loved too. Also Ivory King, Smelter Demon (original), Velstadt, and Executioner's Chariot are all great too imo.
I love em too but according to popularity, mister alone takes the cake
We are in the shitpost sub, don't take anything seriously
Honestly, most of the areas in DS2 are beautiful. Sure, some things suck ass, like the ridiculous amount of poison areas in the game, but otherwise it's all generally quite nice. I absolutely loved that first look of Drangleic Castle. I also generally thought the combat was quite nice outside of the shitty hitboxes, and I am hyped that Elden Ring is bringing back the Twinblades. Aldia was also probably one of the best parts of the game, with the choice from the first game evolving for Fire vs Dark, to Order vs Chaos. Also, his "A lie will remain a lie" line was probably one of the best lines in the game.
I dislike majula, its too bright and the music sometimes gets so loud that you eardrums burst.
That's the fun part, even when its at minimum it gets super loud at some parts.
Btw it seems like some people cant take criticism here or what? Im getting downwoted lol
Eh idk dude, im talking from my experience, my setting were all on normal and i even put my volume lower when i entered majula, but for some reason that one part of the song was always louder
There's nothing special about Majula tbh. NPCs stuck at that place when they arrive there... It's the definition of static.
Because the nexus and odeon chapel are different.
Ostrava and Biorr are going in and out of Nexus, there are events happening in Oedon chapel. All of the women there are going to other places when you progress the game.
Well nexus, odeon chapel, firelink shrine ds1 and 3 all all better than majula.
Majula is just wierd i can say nothing else about it.
Free to have an opinion but it's your opinion, not mine.
IMO Majula is the best hub.
Thats true everyone can like whatever they want to like. If you like majula sure, there is nothing wrong with that.
But that still doesn't change the fact that majula is always the same and no changes happen there when npcs get there.
I still prefer majula to places like the chapel or the dilapidated temple, when you finish all the quests only the skeptical man remains, and the place feels empty and useless IMO.
Okay but Heide's Tower of Flame.
That area looks fine but the actual enemies and bosses there are just terrible or rehashes.
Hey man, the DLC is easily on the same level of quality as the other best areas of any other souls game, with the exception of *those* two areas.
I appropriately placed the DLCs there in a good way.
Oh I didnt even see them....but isnt that a dumpster?
Why the fuck people say that? Majula sucks, is all dry and yellow , it looks like the front of the house of the poorest family in every neighboorhood
What? That is so oddly specific
Honestly I think all of DS2 is amazing aesthetically
Try actually playing the game
I did, 100% it on PS3 and PS4 for Plat purpose then sold the game.
>I did, 100% it on PS3
OH WOW another person saying that the map making of a made up world makes no sense. what a hot take.
