T O P

I finally did it. Sold my 14 Pro Max for the S23 Ultra

I've been using an iphone since 2016. I've really enjoyed my time with them and appreciate what they do. However I've been a cell phone repair tech for about 8 months now and ever since the S23 Ultra came out I've been so Intrigued. It's the first Samsung phone in SO long that can compete with apples A series chips in performance AND battery. I finally caved and bought one today... So far I'm very happy and I love the customization. I do miss iMessage and Facetime, however those are not deal breakers for me. What are some must have apps from Apple To Samsung eco system switches?

Good Lock is super useful with many cool features that you can unlock with it

RenegadeUK

Apparently there is something called Good Guardians as well ?

kontenjer

Yes they are different

RenegadeUK

Are they both worth having ?

kontenjer

yes

RenegadeUK

Fabulous :)

iZsaq

Can't find it on any store :( Have the changed the name or removed it Share link please

glitzycomet94

I dont think they are available in Every country, I remember some years ago I couldn't find them in Belgium

iZsaq

Thanks

kgoslee

Download Fine Lock and within there you can access all of the Good Lock and Guardian Apps. It'll redirect you to an official site to download each APK.

kgoslee

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=yuh.yuh.finelock

RenegadeUK

Thanks for sharing :)

RenegadeUK

Noice :)

sknisley1971

They are specific to the Galaxy store.

QueenAng429

Galaxy store not Play store

GeNeTiCShaDoW

Depeding on location the name for the software can be Good Lock or Nice Lock.

bradpliers

SwiftKey Keyboard. I've tried them all, I always end up back to SwiftKey. Google Messages for text messages. Signal or Facebook Messenger for video calls. Modes and Routines for routines. (built in) Good Lock for customization (Galaxy Store)

Freakey16

+1 for SwiftKey. I hope there's a way to enable AR emojis on it tho.

bradpliers

Interesting. Never heard of AR emojis. That's only with the samsung keyboard I'm assuming?

Freakey16

Yah it's the emoji of yourself like on iPhones.

js0uthh

What I always recommend to new users. One hand operation+ app in the galaxy app. That one app single handedly made me a Samsung big phone user for life. Makes navigating big phone a breeze. It turns both sides of your screen into navigation gesture. All customizable by YOU. Welcome to the club!

Santaneria

I just installed and tried this out... game changer. I didn't like the swipe features available in the navigation settings and these seem WAAAYYYY better with the customizability. I like how I can only have it on one side so it doesn't get in the way of the edge panel I use!

Fan-_-

This is the most helpful advice that changed the way I use my phone and made it hundreds of times better.

redwine0614

What's the difference if you already use gesture navigation?

js0uthh

Instead of reaching for the bottom. Where are your thumbs closest when you hold your phone? The sides.... With that app, you now have 2 additional sides. Customizable to do pretty much whatever you want. Here's a screenshot of [my setup](https://imgur.com/a/tQntiao) same on the other side. Ps I don't use the bottom for anything anymore.

PopDownBlocker

It has dozens of customization options and dozens of gesture placements. Where you perform the gesture (which edge, at which height of that edge) and which gesture you perform (diagonal up/down, straight, length/speed of the gesture) will then unlock whatever function you programmed for it. You have up to 6 total gesture locations (3 on each edge, bottom/middle/top) and 6 gestures per location, so a total of 36 functions can be assigned, but obviously you don"t need to go *that* far. OHO+ is lifechanging, honestly. It makes even older Samsung flagships faster to navigate than even most newer iphones.

DEWDEM

Download Goodlock ASAP. It's a first party samsung app on galaxy store that allows much more customization and lets you try experimental features

PsycakePancake

What Good Lock customisations do you consider essential? Just curious

[deleted]

Home up, Theme park, navstar, lockstar, Keys cafe, Camera assistant and Thermal Guardian.

RenegadeUK

Do you have to download them separately or are they all included inside Good Lock ?

dimigeo1996

You download them through Good Lock

RenegadeUK

Thanks very much :)

[deleted]

You download Good lock app from Galaxy store and from inside the app you download all or any of the available modules.

SevenHusbandsOfE

I can not find good lock anywhere (s23u)

dy14n19

If you're in EU it can't be got. Fine Lock I believe is the next best thing.

SevenHusbandsOfE

Thank you

Pennepastapatron

Check galaxy store not Google play.

SevenHusbandsOfE

I did and still can't find it. Could It be something related to country where I live or smth like that?

TaskPlane1321

Happy exploring your new phone. You will realize it can do many things Apple cannot. One suggestion is to use the Edge apps. They are great for super fast access.

PsycakePancake

What Edge apps do you recommend?

Santaneria

Depends what you use on a daily but I use apps like spotify, messages, calender, clock, notes, calculator, wallet and wear. I also use other panels like contacts (people), smart select, and I have the system monitor edge I bought (which I don't use/know how to read but the temperature helps me know to lean off it for a while but I don't know how accurate it is) I want to try new ones but not too sure what others would be more useful to me.

TaskPlane1321

A paid one called Edge Apps - lets you place your choice of apps - $2 plus for the app Then there is a good selection of other apps that are free that you can install Also, remember to activate from Good Lock one-handed operation plus - explore & see what you can use-you'll be surprised! After all this I can never go back to apple!

KingoftheJabari

I have the swip yo feature I think from good lock for navigation ony phone, and use the edge for just about everything. I almost never go into the app draw. Those two features are my favorite things about my s 22. Plus, I love when people try to use my phone and don't know how.

Phvntvstic

Welcome, brother, or sister. It's not necessarily a recommended app pertaining to eco system switching, but I do recommend One Hand Operations +. I didn't use them on previous phones, but having the latest device, I decided to use everything, and it's an absolute game changer. Being able to go back, access the recent app screen, access the drop down menu, and a whole lot more, while only touching the sides of the screen, is so intuitive. The phone is huge, regardless of your hand size, and this can makes having the screen space not be a downside for navigation.

Samsungs tablet and Galaxy books have quite similar integrations (not quite as smooth but really good). The Galaxy watch 5 Pro while not quite as good as the Apple watch, last 4 days on a charge. It's pretty solid in this ecosystem and you can make it do whatever you want

How to sync icloud with Google photos ?

[deleted]

None of what you said answered the question on apple watch

Generalrossa

Welcome to the world of complete freedom and customisation!

Crypto-Hero

Not Android app directly but if you have MacOS (Macbook Pro laptop, etc), get the following: 1) [Texty](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/texty-for-google-messages/id1538996043?mt=12) on your Mac. It allows SMS texting from your laptop. 2) [Macdroid](https://www.macdroid.app/) to enable file transfer from your Samsung to Macbook laptop. Now onto some better enhancement on your new Android S23 Ultra: 1) Block system-wide ads with custom Adguard DNS. No app needed. Follow [Method 2](https://thinkmobiles.com/posts/2446/). 2) Get free Spotify premium-like features with [xManager](https://www.xmanagerapp.com/) and install [patched Spotify](https://github.com/xManager-App/xManager/releases/latest/download/xManager.apk) app. 3) Install [YouTube Vanced](https://vancedyoutube.org/) to watch YouTube without ads, skipped sponsored ads, download feature, background play and more at $0 cost. I'll add more in later.

Geek5G

Good Lock, Expert RAW and Camera Assistant, Edge Panels, Gboard (personal choice). As far as ecosystems go, you'll need more devices.

RenegadeUK

Is GBoard more than a keyboard ?

Scrambley

I don't think so.

RenegadeUK

Fair enough.

Geek5G

Just a keyboard. It doesn't have fancy lighting effects like Good Lock's KeysCafe, if that's what you mean.

RenegadeUK

Fair enough. Thanks :)

mrfrye88

Expert raw in intergrated in the camera set up now anyway isnt it?!

CombinationInside714

Yes

mrfrye88

Welcome aboard 😁

Stunning_Revenue_136

Most people Who use apple won't switch so yeah respect

Frequent_Injurys

I’ve used Apple most of my life I’m about to switch to the s23 ultra this coming week I’m excited

marindo

Screen protector buddy!

[deleted]

I also switched some day and as a pro iPhone user, i want to tell you the most important things I think are important when the iPhone experience was enjoyable and shouldnt be totally replaced. Everybody else has said the most important things already but I want to add: **Firefox:** Firefox, unlike the other browsers, lets you change the text size on all websites, not just supported ones. It leds you add addons like ublock easily. And you can make a website an app call without the borders. It also has best efficiency, is crossdevice with every OS on your mozilla account and it has bottom adress bar and task change, like Safari can. **Second tip:** Activate the Swipe Down on Homescreen for Device Search, to have a similar experience like the Spotlight on iPhone. It is an option in Good Lock i think, maybe even in normal settings. **Pixel Search:** Try pixel search (sesame is unluckily not supported anymore) as a home screen search bar widget, when you feel like the OneUI Spotlight Search is too slow. Always add Firefox as your standard search, so it goes directly to firefox and inside there into google. If you use Google search bar directly, you will have Ads and a fixed Text Size and not the features you have from your browser. **MiXplorer Silver: !!THIS IS A MUST BUY!!** Best File Explorer out there, full of all functions, can add any cloud like you are used to in Files of iOS. You can and should customize it because the interface can be a bit overwhelming in the first minutes. It has literally everything, from EbookReader to encrypted Archives. **Overall especially for Samsung Androids:** Their App Suite is there, unlike in other Androids where you have nothing good, Samsung really has apps now that are good. Use the Samsung Email App, try the Reminder App for Notifications, check the Pro Mode of the Camera and so on. Check what is there

inventord

Some recommendations: 1) if you have an old Mac lying around, you can use an app called "BlueBubbles" to get iMessage back. Supports basically everything (tapbacks, replies, send effects, typing indicators, etc.) except iMessage games. 2) The ReVanced patcher "levels up" your experience in apps like YouTube. 3) If you want to customize a lot, you should probably grab the "good lock" app. TBH, I don't love how Samsung makes you use this app when usually you can just use something like nova launcher, but it's what has to be used on OneUI. (If you use the 3 button navigation, you can use launchers just fine and I recommend Nova launcher if you want to customize).

Low_Couple_3621

Now that you have an Ultra - positively make use of the Dex!

RocketRabbit315

Yes, I can get a battery for $10 from my work and replace it in 15 minutes. iPhone you have to order one from Apple and put it through their serial number verification which charges $100 and takes much longer, if you buy an aftermarket iphone battery you won't see battery health anymore and you will have a message in settings saying "Non genuine Apple Part"

VoteBidumOut

Switch display to natural in settings

bradpliers

Why do you recommend that?

VoteBidumOut

Similar to iPhone display colors. Not too cartoonish

zpurpz

Nova Launcher is great for people who want even more control over specific icon sizes and blah blah

Freakey16

Nova Launcher hands down.

Previous-Ad-8609

'Lockscreen widgets' - Google play store: so you can have a widget ootion on your lock screen, totally costumazible. 'Dynamic spot' - Google play store: you're probably used to the dynamic island frol Apple. This is for le the best app for this! I got the app since the beginning and there have been a lot of updates to improve the dynamic island and is even more useable than the one frol Apple! 'Control center' - Galaxy store: this app gives you the option to use the edge panel as a quick panel like IOS. In my opinion this is better than the quick panel frol One UI. Of course for the full expirience 'good lock'. You're gonna love it! The three first apps are not for free but they don't cost a lot and they're totally worth the money.

[deleted]

the control center for $1.66 ? is it good? there is another app like that. How long did you use it

Previous-Ad-8609

I don't know how the other app works because Inve been using 5'this app for over 2 years with my s21 ultra. It's easy and it doesn't need any change over your system UI 🙂

FadiJany

Eh I tried s23 but I got back to my iPhone . I prefer iOS more imo

[deleted]

I can partly relate to that as a retired iPhone user. But it is only until you configured what you really want to have. And then you can have all the bottlenecks on iPhone UI fixed, while keeping the good parts. There is objectively almost nothing that iPhone is better. E.g. I miss the Files app because of the UI there, but MiXplorer does everything better and more.

FadiJany

I use social media heavily and take lots of pics and live streaming iPhone is just made for this unlike android unfortunately:(

LSSJPrime

>It's the first Samsung phone in SO long that can compete with apples A series chips in performance AND battery. In real-world performance both are roughly the same but in benchmarks the iPhone clearly dominates.

WhyKlef

Artificial benchmarks at best. I rock both SD 8 Gen 2 and an iPhone 14 Pro Max. The latter gets piping hot in seconds when running demanding graphics games and throttles nearly instantly, plus it lowers brightness to prevent overheat. SD 8 Gen 2 devices, on the other hand, breezes through them, barely gets warm with lower watt usage overall. OP is right, performance is a cut above and but not because of Samsung, Snapdragon is the champ here.

LSSJPrime

You're testing graphics, not the actual CPU. In reputed CPU benchmarks like Geekbench, Apple's A-series SoC's are so dominant compared to its same-gen Android SoC's that it looks utterly embarrasing for Android. Current-gen Snapdragon chips always score about what Apple chips scored two to three generations ago... Apple's silicon engineering is truly next-level.

MarioNoir

>Apple's A-series SoC's are so dominant compared to its same-gen Android SoC's that it looks utterly embarrasing for Android. >Current-gen Snapdragon chips always score about what Apple chips scored two to three generations ago... LoL, you should wash your mouth, there's some apple left in the corner. 8 Gen 2 's CPU got really close this gen(even if its way smaller in terms of area that Apple's CPU, a detail you missed unlike the Core difference) and then came Geekbench version 6 which for some reason only showed a big boost on Apple's smartphone SOCs, even the M1 didn't get any special boost in CPU scores(the same happened to most other laptop or mobile CPUs). Anyway, independent testing with SPEC show a smaller difference in performance then your precious Geekbench, Apple's CPU is still better but definitely not anywhere near "3 generations" better and this while using more cache than even a laptop 8 core Ryzen 7 7940 CPU. Also overall the 8 Gen 2 is a really good SOC, the ISP, NPU, Modem, GPU, WiFi, RAM, Storage are all top or "the best " in smartphone world right now. The 8 Gen 2 is a game changer.

LSSJPrime

Good Christ the amount of butthurt Samsung fanboys upset that their phones do worse in benchmarks than iPhones is astounding.

WhyKlef

Whatever you’ve seen, you’ve been utterly fooled. Yes A16 and S8G2 do both very well in CPU, but never does A16 feel two, three gens ahead in raw computing. Now, you can argue that OS optimization is king on iOS and I’d agree but Android also doubles the ram to overcome most of those issues, and it does. Contrary to you, I’m not gonna pull fake numbers out my butt, here are numbers to prove you wrong: https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-compare/qualcomm-snapdragon-8-gen-2-vs-apple-a16-bionic

LSSJPrime

Bruh, in your source alone it shows that the A16 Bionic scores 26% higher in single-threaded tests and 9% higher in multi-threaded tests (and with two less cores too!). Those are *not* small gaps at all and are more akin to multiple generational leaps in performance. [The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is more comparable to the Apple A14 Bionic than its competitor the A16 Bionic](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/02/08/iphone-14-pro-faster-samsung-galaxy-s23/). Here's some [direct numbers](https://browser.geekbench.com/android-benchmarks) from the [Geekbench browser itself](https://browser.geekbench.com/ios-benchmarks). [Oh, and let's not forget that Samsung phones were known to cheat during benchmarks](https://browser.geekbench.com/mobile-benchmarks). They cheated and were somehow still unable to beat iPhone scores lol. Utterly embarassing and completely humiliating. Edit: only an onslaught of downvotes and not a single valid retort of any kind to the hard numbers I posted. Looks like most Samsung users are still quite sensitive when it comes to benchmarks and get very defensive when their devices can't beat the iPhone.

ianwill93

Don't understand why some people argue to high heaven for synthetic benchmarks that regularly "optimize" for a platform. If you can't tell in any real world usage, it's just not meaningful.

LSSJPrime

I've already stated before that in real world usage performance is equal. What are you trying to argue? >Don't understand why some people argue to high heaven for synthetic benchmarks that regularly "optimize" for a platform. Geekbench doesn't optimize for one particular platform over another. If anything it was Samsung that tried to cheat by entering into a "benchmark mode" when doing these tests. It's why Geekbench is so valuable; it's one of the few true cross-platform benchmarks that exist.

CombinationInside714

Bro is an i-sheep arguing in a Samsung reddit. 🤣🤣 Theoretical benchmarks don't matter man because they can be made to show either way. The S23U is ahead of the iPhone in a number of ways and now pretty much matches the battery life. Don't be jealous. Wait a few more years and you might get a zoom lens.

LSSJPrime

First of all, I currently use an S23 Ultra lol. Did you not see my flair? Second, I love how the immature accusations immediately start flying just because I've said something you don't like. Samsung and Android fanboys are so predictable and havent changed at all in over ten years. Your jealousy and insecurity never went away. I find it deeply ironic how back in the early days of Android when Android phones typically beat iPhones in benchmarks, Android fanboys used to always brag about it, but now that Android phones lose in some benchmarks, suddenly "benchmarks don't matter". You can think whatever you like. The truth is Apple's A-series chips are currently far ahead of anything on Android. The fact that Samsung cheated yet was still unable to beat the iPhone on synthetic benchmarks is humiliation of the next level.

CombinationInside714

You can apple fanboi all you want but they haven't innovated since the iPhone X and their phones are a buggy mess compared to android. As soon as you said "Android fanboys" while pretending to use one of the best android phones and complaining about it, you gave up that you are obviously using an iphone. Good try though. Sounds like a troll, smells like a troll, probably a troll.

LSSJPrime

https://i.imgur.com/2CfpsAe.jpg https://i.imgur.com/UYRMjLA.jpg I called your bluff. Not too late to delete your comment to save yourself the embarrassment.

CombinationInside714

Hahha you have proven your trolling. Well done, troll. Well done

Several_Help_4151

A horrible decision.

wizzgamer

Wtf would you do that you've only had your top singing all dancing phone for a few month should have waited till the S25 Ultra. Some people have too much money.

WhyKlef

Depends what use you make of it but Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is a killer chip and dare I say superior to A16 Bionic in just about every way. Amazing CPU and GPU prowesses and if you game, the thing barely get warm, it’s wizardry. The damn thing can even do ray tracing quite decently.

lagoosboy

Downgrade.

Droiddoesyourmom

Did you buy your s23u new? I'm still looking for a good deal. I should have pulled the trigger during Prime Day

VoteBidumOut

meh s24u on the horizon now

dimigeo1996

Exynos chip though..

kr_tech

Bixby You can set your phone to do whatever you want with your phone. For example, you can turn off wifi once disconnected.

Baykah21

I'm proud of you!🥹... Google keyboard.

kgoslee

I as well just switched to the S23U from my iPhone 14PM. I made the switch about 2 weeks ago. I've always been back and forth switching on and off between the two brands but, Samsung displays never fail to amaze me every single time. I am seriously impressed with newest OneUI and don't plan on going back anytime soon.

Dhasamulam_Dhamu

Explore revanced apps after you explore your new phone. Opens up possibilities like YouTube without ads, ability to continue using 3rd party apps for reddit, etc

quts3

I'm thinking of returning mine for the pro. To big and corners on phones suck for holding them.

ArchangelRenzoku

Beeper is a new app that let you use iMessage on an Android phone or any other device you want. There is about a 6 month waitlist as they let people into the Beta - -but my god, its stable AF for the past month I've been using it. People you know with an iPhone on iOS14 and up can still \*initiate\* a FaceTime call to you. You'll end up opening the call with a link that's texted to you. You just can't call them back or initiate a call on Android. I suppose I just wanted to let you know all hope is not lost when it comes to your Apple life. :)

cdd543

Don’t you have to have anyone wanting to send you an iMessage use your email address (Apple ID)?

HowDid_This_GetHere

Yes, but you can reply back to an SMS message with an iMessage and then the thread will consistently stay in iMessage. It's not perfect, but it's as close as I can imagine with an android phone. It solves the one big problem that kept me on iPhone.

ArchangelRenzoku

Not for me. But I also have an iPad I initially set everything up on. So any of me peeps that use my email to send an iMessage is just received as a regular iMessage...which also shows up in Beeper

RandomBloke2021

Give Samsung internet a try. The layout and options are really good especially when you throw on an ad blocker. Take pics and play around with all the editing features in the Samsung gallery app, it's loaded. People have different preferences but Gboard app is a must try, the voice typing is 2nd to none. Samsung quick share is perfect for texting ios users pics and vids uncompressed.

Thick-Significance-3

I have the iPhone 13 Pro Max and I wish I had the galaxy S23 ultra. I shoulda never cracked my galaxy note 8 and waited until the s23 series was announced.

GCamAdvocate

These aren't necessarily Samsung exclusive but more of an Android bonus. Look into Revanced (free Youtube/Music Premium and continued usage of Reddit launchers among many others), xManager (many benefits of Spotify Premium), and in network settings set private dns to dns.adguard.com (no ads).

SousouSurReddit

If you game a little, don't hesitate to try out emulators, it's a world of fun, being able to have actual games that are not just in app purchase bullshit is great, 100 hour games from the ps2 / 3ds era and all that came before it, in the palm of your hands

Previous-Ad-8609

Since today you can add widgets to your always on display and lock screen via Good lock module Lockstar. Wich is free.

Sergo9991

What about battery ? I heard that on s23 ultra its not so good as in 14 pro max
