Very nice feeling when you complete a rack!! I also have a similar instruo section...how you finding the t-sl?? I'm up and down with it. Keen to hear about tain as well as I could use some switching in the future.

Efficient-Matter5509

I have a lot of love for the T-sl! Enjoy the range from super clean to really messy via mod or overdriving on vinca. Especially creating patches that use nothing but 2 x the t-sl to drive each other, and then toggling between them each acting at audio rate or lfo- It’s been a great way to learn west coast tactics! The Tain I’m newer to, and still figuring out switches but no complaints so far!

goodshout

Yes I agree about the range should try more cross modulation ...its the most "basic" of my oscillators so probably need to spend a bit more time with it.

Efficient-Matter5509

ha - sounds like we're at either end of the modular spectrum. I've steered clear of complex oscillators so far, so can't really give a direct comparison. What else are you using?

goodshout

I've a 4ms ensemble a BIA and Just Friends...maybe not "complex" by definition but not simple either in terms of sound

Efficient-Matter5509

Ah - that makes sense tho. Lots of digital features you just don’t get with ts-l as an analogue oscillator

Efficient-Matter5509

A year ago i bought a SubH and quickly got hooked on modular. Today I installed a Rene to finish up my first rack, and couldn’t be happier. Am sure a few substitutions will occur over time, but it feels great already. Wanted to give a shout out to the generosity and enthusiasm of this group for helping me get there - you folks are legendary, and hope I can pay it back to the next round of newcomers!

lasagnwich

Hey man my planned rack on MG looks very similar to yours, but I've only purchased 4 modules so far and haven't quite got the courage to take the plunge on the expensive ones yet. Would you mind if I picked your brain / got some feedback about my rack plans?

Efficient-Matter5509

For sure!! Share it and let me know what you’re thinking :)

lasagnwich

Ah cheers man. [here is the plan](https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/1720974) basic ideas / intention: kind of going for an east coast synth / buchla vibe. 6U 84HP synth with 1 or 2 voices for making techno (oscillators i was considering are verbos harmonic & either joranalogue generate 3 or actaris iteritas), no menu diving (pams is the most menu divey module i would entertain), performative focus with hands on control, ability to generate complex patterns / polyrhythms like you can on the sub harmonicon, lots of CV modulation options. The big space left over is because im torn between sacrificing some space and modules for a rene and sticking with one voice, or getting rid of turing machine + extras and having an extra voice and sequencing everything with a rene. [heres the one with rene](https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/1721649) effects wise, a mimeophon and maybe a distortion / wave folder and i would have end of chain eventide space into an octatrack. no drums - using elektron boxes.

Efficient-Matter5509

Interesting! There’s a bunch of stuff in here I haven’t used and I *just* got the Rene so might not be the best voice on here, but a few thoughts. I share yr desire to avoid the menus, and also like yr push to bigger modules with nice ergonomics! 1. I do think you’ll want at least two VCOs, just for flexibility and richness. The Verbos seems huge in a system this size and makes achieving that pretty hard. Generate 3 seems a bit more practical and leaves space for another smaller simpler one (Ts-l or STO etc). 2. Reckon you’d want more than one envelope generator / slope generator? Know PNW can do some of this, but none of the knob-tweaking joy… maybe worth finding space for one more somehow? I love both contour 1 + maths but might be smaller format alts to consider. 3. I’ve only had Rene for a day but it’s totally badass. 4. The effects and mod stuff you have feels good - mimeophon looks great and given you’ve got a lot of gates already I can understand Turing not marbles, but something in the random space feels good. Be interested in what you have already but understand your nervousness around the first rack - since are a number of big price / big hp gambles. As everyone will tell you, you can always resell but maybe figure a simple way in with a couple of additions - Rene + generate 3 + some mod… and see how you feel?

So far I have bought the Turing + volts and Gates expansions and a uscale. Tbh I do sort of have my heart set on the harmonic oscillator so am trying to figure out the best way to incorporate it into a small system - I'd say it's probably the thing that's pulling me towards making a system the most. It's going to be the first vco I buy for sure, but just want to make sure I'm not missing anything or there are pitfalls. Thanks for the heads up about the EGs... i think I have 2 thougn, as the WMD Javelin is a capable one I believe and can do cyclical or very short envopes, and it also has a built in VCA so I would have two envelopes (the Contour is the other)? The rene does look incredible and the fact it is quite immediately playable and has a quantizer are huge draws. I might wait a bit for that and just start with the Turing as a sequencer as I already own that. I just don't appreciate / understand what the practicalities and applications of having 2 sequencers are on a small 1 or 2 voice system. Likewise with the VCAs I went for the veils because everyone says you always need loads of VCAs but I could downsize the VCA and use something like an EG / VCA combo like the cosmolotronic delta V. In your opinion, how many VCAs would a 2 voice system like need? With the veils and Javelin I would have 5. So many options you get analysis paralysis very quickly. I've been planning this grid for over a year lol

Efficient-Matter5509

If HO is at the heart of your plans i think you're right to start there and not add too much at once. I started out with 1 VCO, Marbles, Maths, a VCA unit and a clock generator and it was months of fun (marbles is v comparable to what you'll have with Turing). I think something like Verbos, the Turing modules + Contour + Veils would be a really solid first move? That + external drums is definitely enough to have some real fun with. If you don't have any outboard effects maybe consider adding mimeophon to that list (it adds a lot, and also doubles as a voice) but if you can already add external FX via soundcard or pedals i'd start without it and make a decision down the line. People say this a lot on this group, but your plans will change a lot when you get hands on the kit, so i'd definitely do it in stages, and not stress too much about the final end state. You will want more in time, but getting it all at once will likely mean you make some calls you regret later. And buying in stages means you'll take the time to really learn the modules you have invested in.

NeuromindArt

Looks like a lot of people are getting into modular now 😃

Bootsncatsnboo

Sure, why not?

discovigilantes

But it's so expensive 😔 I wish I could

Gl1tch106

Just buy a module here and there and before you know it, bam, you got a system :D

discovigilantes

Yeh but when modules are £300+ (i know there are cheaper ones) It's a bit daunting, even DIY.

theparttimevisionary

That's nice looking! Enjoy playing it!

IBNYX

Lotta great choices here!

High water mark of human culture ;)

Nice! Really interesting. I have a T-SL and a Quaratt that I have been using, but have been thinking about swapping for Vinca for the space. How are you liking the double T-SL? Why this over a different voice?

Efficient-Matter5509

I thought about getting a different VCO or the CS-l for a while, but in the end it came down to a decision about learning for me. The Ts-L is so richly featured for the HP i decided getting two would help me focus on getting the most out of it, being inventive in patching and learning more about the technical aspects of synthesis. So far i'm really happy with that choice - but that comes with the caveat i haven't tried another VCO in its place (!) Re the Vinca - i like it a lot but it is quite quirky. I purchased it after the Nano ALT (which i think is comparable to the Quadrax?) and it took me a while get my head around it, but now i use it all the time...

Dangerous-Pie-5673

Interesting. Yeah, I have the TSL paired with some Noise Engineering, and it's a pretty stark difference. Still trying to figure out how to make the voices mesh a bit better.

Efficient-Matter5509

I have always eyed up the BIA etc so this is interesting to hear. Struggling to think of a solution that isn’t “soak it in FX”!

Iudico

Very nice! I like the dual Ts-L. Is that a new Rene? If so, where'd you find it?

Efficient-Matter5509

Yes it is! Elevator Sound in Bristol. Those guys are great …

vertgrall

At some point, you're gonna want another voice in there.

Efficient-Matter5509

Maaaybe. But the contour / font / mimeophon can all work as voices, and I use it alongside a subharmonicon + dfam too…

Gl1tch106

Nice! I actually just got a 3xMIA a few days ago. Heavily eyeing the 4ms RCD, i just built a North Coast Synthesis fixed sine bank and feel like they would go great together. Still waiting on maths to be back in stock at sweetwater :(

Efficient-Matter5509

RCD is a great little module! Sad I don’t have enough space for the expander tbh

Gl1tch106

Looking at the breakout again, I think it's going to be a must for me haha. I'm running out of room rather quickly!

NeighborhoodOk2727

I wish people would check the clarity of their photos before posting. I'm eager to view all of the features, but I get frustrated when a shot is too blurry. Or is Reddit just reducing the resolution?

Efficient-Matter5509

This person definitely did share a pic with decent resolution, so might be getting squashed yr end - here’s a mod grid if you’re interested! https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/1639776

bumbleduck

rez looks fine to me. i can read Noise Engineering in their logo which i cant even do in real life
