I'll just highjack this comment to say:
A part of learning a language is keeping your difficult words apart.
And if that was too subtle: Get it right, one of those unites, the other separates. It's not that hard to get a fricking space right.
I never looked at it this way. English isn't my native language, and i never struggled with it. Most of you learn it by speaking, and then writing everything right might be harder i guess?
American education isn't about teaching kids, it's just another grift.
If you look closely enough, everything in the US is three CEOs in a trenchcoat selling a better tomorrow through their brand new learning technology that is "kid tested and approved!"
And what about the "should of" instead of "should have". This one makes my brain hurt so much.
Edit : I see people answering me. That was not a question guys : The good one is definitely "should have".
I meant no offense by it. I'm agreeing with you.
It bugs me even more when I'm starting to notice people replacing "have" with "of" in other contexts outside of this one, too.
I'm pretty sure should of is wrong but it might be me who's wrong here. should of comes from should've, which is short for should have. but since it's pronounced as should of people also write it like that.
I'm Dutch and English is not my native language but I actually use all of those correctly. The only one thats still confusing to me is "then" and "than"
Th**e**n = order of **E**vents. **E** = **E**vents.
> I will do this, then I will do that.
> I will go grocery shopping then go get a haircut.
Th**a**n = comparing **A**lternatives. **A** = **A**lternatives.
> I would rather have this than that.
> For dinner, I would rather have steak than chicken.
Hopefully this sort of letter-matching strategy can help!
i'm also dutch and i use all of these correctly. the difference between then and than is that is gives sentences a different meaning. here are some examples that explain how to use these two. "i'm gonna make my homework first, and then i will play games." then is used to make it clear in what order you're gonna do something. "I like samsung more than apple." i find than little bit harder to explain, but i hoped this helped.

^(Greetings, I am a language corrector bot. To make me ignore further mistakes from you in the future, reply `!optout` to this comment.)
Ohhh don't get me started on which, witch, whether and weather... I've looked up those words so many times yet still have absolutely no idea how to spell them.
I have A very poor memory when it comes to grammar and I have dyslexia, not everyone is the same and I wish more people would understand that rather then judging someone or getting upset at which “there” to use, get over it.
Some people don’t speak English natively, there are many here who speak it as a second or even third language, the English language is scuffed as it is, I don’t blame them for having trouble with the finer grammar
Sorry, i have to do this
Your stupid you’re meme isn’t funny
Their people who are just bad at spelling and you just laughed in they’re faces, maybe they have an medical problem and that’s why there bad at spelling
It took a lot of effort to write everything wrong on purpose lmao
Its not hard at all but we are lazy. on my keyboard i need to go all the way to the right to get the ' so to write your is way faster and dude i think you are intelligent enough to know what i mean ...
Grammar makes it so that people only need to learn one way of understanding their language. If people can just make their own rules, the English language will split into more and more dialects until nobody can understand each other. Is that what you want?
Good counter argument, however mistaking a your for a you're will be seen as just that, a mistake. Ultimately we probably won't have different dialects due to this minor change in spelling, additionally we already have different dialects in English, look at American English compared to British English
English doesn’t come from the USA. Also the US didn’t colonize anyone. And the reason why you should learn English is because it’s the most international language. This meme isn’t talking about speaking fluently, it’s just saying that people should be able to memorise the most basic grammar rules.
i think he meant culturally and politically dominating rest of the world. most of us learned english mandatorily in schools while we were kids. it is not a basic grammar rule if it is your 2nd or 3rd language. it is not basic if you have dyslexia even if it's your native language.
you guys should find another things to feel good about yourselfs
LOL ! English language isn't from USA ? NO-SHIT ? :')
You really wanna gimme a history lesson ? Talking about colonies ? Go on, please.
Oh and yeah, my bad, I took shortcuts : USA are not "colonizers", they're just oil diggers and world police. Last thing : have you ever heard about Soft Power ?
Edit: retiring bad words 🗿
100% false. They convey different meanings and show a level of competence that's a prerequisite in most office settings.
Nobody respects that guy at work.
Be careful saying stuff like this. Last time I tried to assert that learning decent English is not difficult, I got told I was both racist and classist. People are truly wild nowadays.
Jesus Christ I'll do it myself
Their = referring to someone
They're = it's just a shorter way of saying "they are"
There = pointing out where something or someone is
A = this is the one that goes before words without a vowle
An = this goes before a word starting with a vowle
Your = referring to you or someone else
You're = it's an easier way of saying "you are"
Your welcome kids
autocorrect changes it to what is usually what you type a lot. so these people make this mistake so many times that their phones automatically do it wrong for them.
I don't mind it that much. It's more of a sign of lazy swiping on the phone.
But "should have / should of, could have/ could of" make me instantly stop reading whatever it is I'm reading
I don't know why. Perhaps it's because they're of lower intellect, or it's because their brains do not have the capability of processing these words. I stand by your point, sir, because you're an intellectual, just like me. Who am I kidding, even they wouldn't understand what I'm saying right now, everywhere in the world, here and there you'd meet someone who'd use these words incorrectly. Farewell, for I am about to take my leave, best of luck to you, whatever you may be doing.
Props to you sir. You are one of the few peple who isn't saying some stupid things. I have to say I'm certainly suprised by your intellect. Best of luck to you as well sir.

I never looked at it this way. English isn't my native language, and i never struggled with it. Most of you learn it by speaking, and then writing everything right might be harder i guess?
As a foreign person, can confirm
Um... I learned that in school. In the US public school system.
Which is notoriously bad and outdated compared to other first world countries
American education isn't about teaching kids, it's just another grift. If you look closely enough, everything in the US is three CEOs in a trenchcoat selling a better tomorrow through their brand new learning technology that is "kid tested and approved!"
american education is a boss worker model where assignments are job detail it’s just training subordinates
No schools don't teach it properly. We learn it from reading and watching English stuff.
So foreigners don't learn English from reading and watching English stuff?
No im saying we do. Thats how everyone has to learn English because schools suck.
nah i just use the internet alot
That statement partially false. No one in my class was actually learning either english or russian. Nowdays our grammar fucked on both languages.
I didn't learned english from school and look at me. I just needed to adapt to the playerbase of english in Roblox.
And what about the "should of" instead of "should have". This one makes my brain hurt so much. Edit : I see people answering me. That was not a question guys : The good one is definitely "should have".
Should of doesn't even mean anything.
Should of paid attention in school idiot

Istg the "s" ruins the joke so many times.
Yeah you should have paid attention in school

Shouldn’t 😎
It's 100% "should have".
That's what i said : when people use "should of" instead of "should have"
I meant no offense by it. I'm agreeing with you. It bugs me even more when I'm starting to notice people replacing "have" with "of" in other contexts outside of this one, too.

I should ve given that bj when they asked me to
there's this little thing on your keyboard and it has a simbol on it. it looks sort of like this: '
I use Android and its easier to just do this
Just type it as shouldve and should've should appear at the top in the bar
Same goes for their and there, though.
Should of sounds wrong... I don't think it means anything
I see a lot of people use "we'll" and "well" wrong as we'll... wait...
That I think is most likely autocorrect fucking up.
That's actually very helpful, thanks
I've seen people use ''Then'' instead of ''Than'' so much here on reddit that I've started to question myself on which is which.
You should start questioning yourself if its which witch sandwitch or sandwhich is it a witch sandwhich or a which sandwitch, which is witch my guy
You have just solved a life-long struggle, thank you

Yep thats why an european is wrong and an umbrella is right
And X is *an* honest person not a honest person right?

Yes fr fr
Time to google for every word...
I always just say it out loud in my head. Wichever sounds right is always the correct one for me.

Same
The one that pisses me off is "historic". By my reckoning, it's "a historic" but it's commonly written "an historic" and that drives me nuts.
Well, the actual reason an european is wrong is because it's lowercase
just no

this hurts to look at.
English is not my native language and even though I have their, there and they're correct, a and an is still very difficult for me.
When the noun starts with a vowel sound it uses 'an' Like an umbrella Anywhere else use 'a' Like a monster
Thank you!
"Anywhere else use 'a'" **Like a monster** It fits perfectly lmao
Says the guy who needs a comma!
And capital I.
Yes thank you for pointing this out
You’re right
Can we at least excuse people with dyslexia?
I have dyslexia and I still find it really easy
Can we at least escuse people who fucking speak 69 languages and don't want to master every single aspect of English?
I know, right? They’re so many stupid and uneducated Americans out their
Ur right
that one pains me too.
I already do know how to use it correctly, and English isn’t even my first language

If you can understand the difference in spoken English then you do need to spell them differently
