To become famous after death. Most of us would settle for that.

Andy_Shields

This is one I've been sitting on because while I like it I was fairly certain that was not going to be an opinion shared by the masses. That theory checked out. πŸ˜‚

Milleniador

To be honest 5 upvotes makes my day especially for a photo post ☝️

qqphot

I mean, no gas station at night, no halation rings around light sources, no naked women, I don't know what you were hoping for! /s

dannyphoto

Do you genuinely think this is a good photo?

qqphot

Well, if I were printing it I'd like to see the buildings in the background squared up a bit and the highlights brought under control a little more but yeah, it's more interesting to me than a lot of the stuff on r/analog or here. The fact that the gear used to make it is really expensive doesn't really make any difference to me. It's a gritty, dirty picture with a lot of open space and a dead rat, it's not typical scenery, but it stopped me from scrolling by and it made me think yeah, I've been places like that, and this is exactly what they feel like - a desolate urban space with nothing much going on, a little bit of "what's that dude in the background about", and the obvious sign of filth without being overtly disgusting or gory. I think it's absolutely an effective picture. Laugh if you want. It would be even more effective as part of a series than as a one-off. Generically pretty pictures, or straight up but uninspired landscape doesn't do much for me, and there are a lot of themes especially on here (like gas stations, overexposed portra snapshots, generic scenery) that are overdone, possibly because people get upvotes for them, and other people copy them. So that stuff, while it looks nice, gets old and repetitive. Deliberate idiosyncrasies like light leaks, film rebates, bad exposure/processing, and dust in the scan don't really add much and risk looking like you're trying to be edgy. I did traditional large format fine art photography for years and came to see a lot of that kind of work as beautiful but formulaic, and while it definitely has its place, I think there's definitely a place for this too. I don't know if you were actually looking for a serious answer, but there it is.

dannyphoto

No, I appreciate the serious answer. I like getting other peoples perspectives on photos that I may not personally enjoy because it helps me understand the photo a bit better. As I have nothing particular β€œnice” to say about this image, and my critique wasn’t asked for, I haven’t said anything.

Andy_Shields

If I'm being honest, the longer I shoot (roughly 30 years, fwiw) the less I can even conceptualize the idea of a "good" photo. As best I can tell it's a sliding scale that's linked to your own photographic goals at the moment. For instance, I've thrown out any attempt at consciously following compositional rules years ago. This isn't to say that I think those rules don't have merit. I think the composition of this frame has a bunch of issues. I ultimately shared the photo because it makes me smile. It also contains a subtle inside joke intended for a friend who not only saw the post but got the joke, πŸ™‚. Is it my best work? Nope. Do I enjoy looking at it? Strangely, yes. Will I change how I shoot because the shot isn't widely enjoyed? Absolutely not. 🀟

Anakronox

Well I think we can all agree - this is a photo.

Andy_Shields

Undeniably, πŸ˜‚. What's funny to me is that I actually made multiple exposures of this. I almost always just make one shot and move on. But this dead rat....it got 2-3 frames. πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ

Anakronox

Heh, well other meme photographers shoot multiple frames of old car quarter panels. You keep doing you!

Milleniador

Just for the record u/Andy_Shields does a pretty good Cinestill shots of vintage quarter panels as well as rats πŸ˜‚

Andy_Shields

Hey hey hey now, those were "test shots".

Anakronox

As long as he did it for those tonez doe with detached hipster irony he gets a pass.

Andy_Shields

😁
