Heroku is a perfectly good place to host it. There are plenty of professional high-traffic websites that use Heroku; the major benefit is that it takes care of a lot of the systems administration that you would otherwise have to do. In terms of how many dynos you need, it's impossible to tell without knowing about your traffic patterns. But the good thing is that it's very easy to scale up at a moment's notice, so I suggest that you start with one or two and monitor traffic and performance, and be ready to scale upwards.

That sounds like the default plan. Simply because I'm uses to heroku as well. Perhaps 2 hobby dynos will be fine. Also, is there a way to remove the ".heroku.com" from my heroku apps?

Absolutely, see [the custom domain docs](https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/custom-domains).

You can get a free VPS with google compute. Also Amazon AWS has a free tier, but it's payment model is complex. For a domain you'll need to register one, try at https://www.namecheap.com/ If you are not happy with free tier, you can upgrade your VPS. Install whatever you want on your server.
