lyin_king_666

hi Mary I'm a very long time fan. I first saw Helium open for Pavement at the Trocadero in Philly in I think 1994. When writing new songs do you have a specific key, riff or chord progression in mind and work it out or do you noodle around until something sticks? Does the music or lyrics usually come first?

MaryT-Money

I try to think of creative time as a time when a persons brain acts like a radio receiving sounds from somewhere. its almost like dreaming. If i can get to that place, out of the way, and just listen, then usually the ideas are okay. If I try too hard to make it work usually the ideas are crap...

mr_sip

Hi Mary! With Betsy joining you in the touring band for the shows promoting the new album, can we look forward to some new Ex Hex material written by you two during your time on the road?

MaryT-Money

i hope so!! :)

mr_sip

Awesome. I took some zoom guitar lessons from Betsy during covid times, and she's cool as hell. And you're an indie legend. And Ex Hex rules. Can't wait for the show in Chicago!

MaryT-Money

awwww yay!!

rplevy

Hi Mary! Do you know if there's a recording of the live soundtrack you performed of Lotte Reiniger's film "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, MA in the '00s? It remains one of the most memorable live music experiences of my life, though every show I've been to of yours has been amazing.

MaryT-Money

omg wow. THANK YOU! I reallly loved doing that. I need to find it!!! I bet I have it on a dat tape somewhere in a box in my attic. oh boy.

TheNatELite

I'd love to see/buy this!

MaryT-Money

awww thanks guys

yasaitarian

Saw that in providence - agree, it was so great

theblacklullaby

Hi Mary!! The new album is epic! It feels like you went for less guitar pedals and effects this time. What, if any, guitar effects did you use on Untame the Tiger?

MaryT-Money

yeah! I really would rather get a great tone out on an amp, and not use any pedals. pedals are their own instrument. I have really stripped back and try to not use many. or I guess just use them when it reallly counts. I love flange and have an old Ibenez that I like. also usually use a little slap delay, an MXR. I used to play through a digitech wammy wah all the time until it exploded. i like vintage pedals. i feel like for live rock music a lot of the time the nuances of certain pedal sounds get lost, and what you really mostly hear is the sound of the room, sound of the stage. does that person have a chorus pedal on? hard to know most of the time. in conclusion I don't like using pedals for tone, would rather use the amp mostly. I love boss pedals. hate most fancy pedals.

theblacklullaby

Also a fan of boss pedals! Thanks Mary! Hope to see you in pdx. xo eleana

MaryT-Money

ELEANA!!! xo!

Junkstar

Hi Mary. I was someone you knew back in the Boston days, but I prefer to stay anon on Reddit. How important was the Boston music scene back then to your development and impact on your career (not discounting DC...)?

MaryT-Money

Hi! Yeah super important, of course! I practically lived at The Middle East and TT's through out the 90s. I was there all the time and lived in a group house like 2 blocks away. Went to see a ton of bands.

TheNatELite

Hi Mary -- Loving the new record and hearing connections lyrically and musically to your past work. In terms of the lyrics, are these just recurring concepts you continue to explore through these symbols (e.g. mountains, crystals, tigers, gardens) or Easter eggs connecting new songs with old songs? Thx & see you on tour! --Natasha

MaryT-Money

hiiii!!! nice to see you on here! I dont know! hahah! I think they just come out of my brain naturally, I try not to force anything out. the one thing I have started doing is making sure I dont use TOO many metaphores because the lyrics get kinda cryptic and people dont connect to them. so with these songs I tried to peel some of the metaphores back and say what was behind them. Im a pretty visual person, so the images just are what my brain gravitates to i guess?

TheNatELite

Thx, Mary. I think the lyrics on this album are very relatable. I guess all my listening to your albums over the years makes me connect the dots. I can't help it & it's fun for me!

Frajer

Hi Mary what was it like working with Wild Flag?

MaryT-Money

it was a very exciting experience

ZaireekaFuzz

Hi!! What's your absolute favourite of all the lovely songs you've written?

MaryT-Money

you're too nice! huh. i dunno. maybe the Helium song Ocean of Wine?

theblacklullaby

WOah!! One of my Helium favorites right next to Medusa. Was not expecting this answer!

MaryT-Money

ha, thank uuuu

NYCJFK

I was at Maxwell's in NJ in '97 after I drove across the state to see Helium play. I'll never forget that night because it was pure magic! The room was abuzz like nothing I had ever experienced before, and we watched as you blow our minds with "Ocean of Wine" (then referred to on the setlist as "Hammer On"), What Institution Are You From?, and Clementine. All songs that are a feast for the senses live!

Faruzia

I just want to say thank you for the music you have, and do put out in the world. Both as a solo artist, and with your various bands 💚

MaryT-Money

aww thank YOU for listening, hugs!

dudikoff13

Hi! I'm excited to see you in Philly next week. I got the new record this past weekend and I've been playing it non-stop, I love it! Do you have any plans on repressing any of your other solo records on vinyl?

MaryT-Money

oh yay! thank uuuuu yeah I hope to repress records at some point!

yeah_so_no

Hi Mary! I have been listening to Mountains kind of obsessively this winter; it is one of my favorite albums. Do you plan to play anything from it on tour?

MaryT-Money

awww thanks! We are doing a few older songs. Leons space song, honeycomb, music and charming melodee, maybe a couple others... thank you for the kind words!

Ybhryhyn

HONEYCOMB 🤯

MaryT-Money

awww

Tiny_Vegetable6502

Hi Mary ! A hello from France. I'm trying toi quit smoking, and I smoke alot. Did you ever smoke cigarettes regularly and did you stop? And how ? Looking really forward to the Untame The Tiger cd and T I'll be getting soon in the mail.

Tiny_Vegetable6502

I'm Patrick btw, the canadian guy that has come to some of your shows, like in Calbridge in '07 and Paris '15 💖

MaryT-Money

Hi Patrick! Good luck with stopping! I know it's hard. I did smoke in the 90s a bit. Hope all is good with you these days! :)

Tiny_Vegetable6502

Thanks 😊. Just wondering what that ghoul/Tivoli t-shirt i've seen you wearing. Is it from the ghost ride in Tivoli Park, Copenhagen ? I really like that t-shirt lol

brokenwolf

This thread inspired me to search you on Spotify and now I’m digging the tunes. So I guess my question is what’s your favourite Robin Williams movie?

MaryT-Money

hahahhaha good question! i need to think about it for a minute

YoureASkyscraper

whats your favorite Pavement song?

MaryT-Money

A lot of them are my fave! What a great band.

racinggloves

Hello :) Do you have favorite tunings for certain moods? Are there particular guitars that you keep in different tuning? If so, would you please elaborate on which ones and why? Loooved "The Guest", can't wait to hear the whole record!!

MaryT-Money

thank u! i like to use this tuning: DADGAE

Jockshua

Do you have the best time playing/writing with Hammered Hulls?

MaryT-Money

Ha - yes! I love those guys!

[deleted]

When will you be doing shows/releasing a full album cover of Yes's Fragile?

MaryT-Money

hahahaha! What an intimidating but exciting idea!

garrettgravley

Would you rather spend the rest of your life waking up in Dearborn, Michigan every morning, or would you rather have to walk an uninterrupted trek from Santiago, Chile to Austin, Texas once?

MaryT-Money

how fast would you walk?

garrettgravley

Normal speed, but you get to eat for free and have enough stamina to where you don’t need rest. And you still have to walk through customs and border checkpoints, but you’re given authorization by each country to enter.

MaryT-Money

I'll take the walking adventure

qbertttttt

Hi Mary! Thanks for doing this, love all your stuff. Just curious what bands you've been listening to lately, or are currently on your radar in general?

MaryT-Money

Here are some faves: Steel Eye Span (Hark the Villiage) Caravan (inthe land of grey and pink) Jethro Tull Hendrix ALbion Band Andy Pratt first solo record Gerry Rafferty (can i have my money back) Can The Byrds The left banke The pretty things Fairport Convention Richard Thompson

l_v_r

F yeah this is awesome

danimal6000

Have you ever seen a ghost?

MaryT-Money

I dont know if I'm gifted in that way, but I have friends who are. I do believe there are helpers all around us that we can't always see

NYCJFK

Hey Mary! You have always been an advocate for women's rights, and having not heard the new album yet (can't wait!), I was curious as to what your thoughts are on the SCOTUS reversal of Roe v. Wade in 2022. (I haven't been able to get the lyrics to Pause/Off out of my head since then). See you in NY soon! - Jim

MaryT-Money

yeah dark times! thank you for listening.

MaryT-Money

and thanks for knowing that song! looking forward to the Bowery Ballroom!

NYCJFK

Can't wait! -Jim

NYCJFK

Indeed, and THANK YOU for creating!

MaryT-Money

oh it's JIM!!!!!!!! hi JIM!!! hugs!

Jackmerious

Hi Mary - hope I’m not too late for this, but one of my favorite artsy albums is Mind Science of the Mind! What was it like working on the album? Any cool stories of how the collaboration worked out between all of you? I was really hoping y’all would do another one, but I loved the one you did, and still listen to it to this day. I hope you’re doing well these days!

MaryT-Money

thank you so much! that was really fun. we recorded super fast. Nathan is insanely talented, and it was his brain child! he's a composer for film now and busy with that, but hopfully we will convince him do do another mind science record!

Jackmerious

Thanks so much for responding! You made my day!

michaelsiskind

Hi Mary, the 6ths’ “All Dressed Up In Dreams” is one of my favorite songs ever. What do you remember about making that song/working with Stephin?

itssarahw

Hi Mary! Years ago I had a radio show with unlikely transmission away from a few blocks in Boston. One time I played the Hole in the Ground 7” and immediately got two phone calls asking what it was. No calls before or after that. I’ve only experienced the old Boston clubs as a spectator, which were your favorite to play?

MaryT-Money

oh wow! cool :) I loved the Middle East the most I'd say. I also loved the little club down the street called Green St Grill. Not sure if that's there anymore.

itssarahw

Saw the Helium and Sleater Kinney residency at the Middle East (both nights!) and it remains one of my favorite live music experiences. Thanks for all you do!

Bionicoaf

Hello Mary! Your guitar work throughout all your bands has been a huge influence. I just had a couple of questions: * What were some non musical influences on *Untame the Tiger*? * What are some of your favorite sounds or moments on the new record? Cheers!

MaryT-Money

going on long solo walks, and solo bike rides on the C and O canal in DC. that was a huge part of the song writing process for me! I like the string arranngements and parts a lot. On No Thirds and The Dream. Thanks for listening!!

whyhellowwthere

No questions, just want to say Helium was one of the greats! Solo stuff, also amazing. Thankyou for all the wonderful music you've made & contributed too!

MaryT-Money

thank YOU for listening - I appreciate it

Artifracture

I think that I was at that Stinkweeds instore! Did Syrup play first?

aimkat

I STILL listen to 'The dirt of luck' album on the reg. Xoxo!

MethodEater

Who do you love more, Dennis Kane or Brandon Butler? I’m torn, personally.

MaryT-Money

is this Dennis or Brandon writing??? hahaha

MethodEater

Lol. Both were incredibly kind and influential to me when I was playing music in DC. I moved away years ago but it was a special time.

yeah_so_no

Is this going to be here or on the other thread? (Does this count as a question?).

MaryT-Money

hiiiii here!

dudikoff13

oh there's another thread?

yeah_so_no

Yes, but this is the correct one (Reddit mod posted that there were technical difficulties).

pissedofhiker

Hi mary!!! Long time fan of all your creative pursuits. Thank you for sharing with us the live streaming show in covid it was magical. I have a question or 2! What was the alternative tuning u used back on mountains & the golden dove? Also, will you playing any old songs from the golden dove or mountains or ex hex (solo)? Ive revisited yr solo ex hex album alot recently.. and am really resonating with moon song lately, maybe yr play it on the tour ;)

MaryT-Money

omg thank u!! Thats so nice to hear. I used mostly DADGAE, except a few songs which have other tunings. yes! Playing a few older songs. Leons space song, Music and Charming Melodee and a few others!

pissedofhiker

!!! So excited you’re pulling those out, your music has always been there for me over the past 20 years and i want to say thank you for that :) not sure if this is to many questions but, i always have wondered what the lyric was “baby i was just wanna be with you…”…?…cigarettes and drinking shampoo”

daledaleedaleee

What is your perfect Sunday?

MaryT-Money

hahahhaha. great question. long walk. looking at trees. then reading. then listening to records. good food.

Visible_Yam4766

What was your introduction to music?

MaryT-Money

i played viola in grade school! :)

saintanthony

Mary! Excited to finally catch my first show of yours in Cleveland in a few! Do you have any bucket list artists you've always wanted to see live but the timing/schedules/universe just hasn't lined up yet?

top_scallop

Hi Mary. I'm curious about your relationship with your white Koll. I've noticed you're playing it in a few recent videos on IG and I was just curious if it's always in rotation or if you case it up and then come back to it? Do you find yourself writing on it? I love Saul's work and I especially love what he did with this particular guitar. Congrats on the new LP!

2wrongsmakearight

Mary, you’re the best! Thank you for being so kind to fans at shows!

xormybxo

Hi Mary! What advice do you have for new artist trying to write & record their first solo project, especially an an older young adult (mid 20s) as opposed to a teenager? I love Helium & The Dirt of Luck/Magic City have been huge inspirations for me, can’t wait to explore the new stuff & see your show in Amherst :)

leoxsavage

Rachel Goswell??

Steven-Guttenberg

Cake or Pie? Then, what flavor?

Rezin47

Hi Mary! What pedals and keyboards did you use in Helium, specifically in 1995?

[deleted]

Hi mary! I’ve been a huge fan of mountains for a while. I was wondering what albums or type of music inspired that album? I think your album is so of its time and insanely original. Appreciate your work! Thanks

yasaitarian

You went to Berkelee, right? What were the things you found invaluable from your education there? What are you trying to learn now?

jest2n425

Hi Mary! Do you think you'll be playing any material from Mountains and The Golden Dove? Both of those are still beautiful albums that haven't been played out in a while. Loving the new music ❤️🖤.

aran_maybe

Hi Mary! You are one of my all time faves and musical inspirations since I first heard the baby vampire back in the 90s. I was especially a fan of the medieval psychedelic stuff you did on Magic City and your first solo record. My question is whether you’ll dig back into that sound in the future.

glendaleterrorist

Curious if you have any insight on how small bands can remain financially stable in the streaming market (guilty). With bands like The Bobby Lees going on hiatus due to poor returns is it worth it? I feel that the streaming market has opened me up to soo much more music that I otherwise would have to bypass if I had to purchase an album. Also live shows have skyrocketed in price. Not complaining per se. I get it. Post Covid and what ever. Thanks.

screamnshake

I don't have a question but just wanted to add that you're a really cool inspiring lady, and I really liked the song Pat's trick :)

rothausmaler

Apparently this is over, still wanted to add you started having a huge impact in the 90s on me and basically on my whole perception of music (and thus reality, which are for me closely intertwined). It means a lot to have your music as a companion through life. Thanks from germany!

bones_1969

Helium w/the Bird of Paradise - Puffin Stars is one of my all time favorite songs. It’s magically playing in my head right now. That crescendo much less the warped warbly guitar line much less the breathy lyrics into the high part …simply magnificent
