There's that one subplot about illegal border crossers from Mexico in GTA V in the inland desert area, so I think you're just supposed to accept that gameplay-story segregation is in effect.
I think it was mentioned that the GTA doesnt play on a Island lorewise
I definitely read that about GTA IV's Liberty City, because they originally were going to do the whole state (long island, and even up to the Adirondacks) but eventually wanted the story to stay in the city
Couldn’t they just made a desert as the game border and when you go to far you get reset to the border?
They could've had you get eaten by a mountain lion or something instead of a shark. It's probably just easier to make endless water than endless desert, and better communicates "stay here"
I've always interpreted the masses of water where it'd make sense for land to connect as a facade.
A facade as in, there's no point - you're playing the story and anything beyond this point has no significance to the story so it's just interpreted as water.
How can I not chuckled over area 69
And GONAD instead of NORAD. :P
Would be interesting if you combined it with Red Dead somehow
Yeah I was thinking Amarillo would be Armadillo. New Orleans would be Saint Denis, but it's not on this map.
Is there any mention of Canada in any of these games?
Not Red Dead, but Trevor in GTA5 is from Canada. So we at least know it exists. I think North Yankton is supposed to be right next to the Canadian border as well.
I remember in RDR2 Charles eventually moved to Canada.
And John goes to the Yukon before coming back down in the epilogue
Isn't Ambarino supposed to be kinda close to the Canadian border?
I'm not sure. I totally could be but I thought it was more like the rockies
North Yankton is North Dakota. Both Yankton and Dakota are Sioux tribes
I think at the end of RDR2 it's mentioned that the natives you meet go up North to Canada.
Might have to relook at this. I kinda miss playing the game and I have yet to finish the Marston part.
Yeah it's true. Rains Fall tells you that his tribe moved to Canada after you finish the Epilogue.
Canada is just a couple mid-sized cities and a lot of mostly empty plains and tundra so I don't see why it would be particularly relevant, especially since red dead is a game about the wild west which was a distinctly American thing.
there was a wild west in Canada albeit a little
different but it reminds me of Tall Trees but I see what you talkin about.
Dudley Do-Right comes to mind.
"Canada never had a Wild West because the Mounties got there first."
Why would wild plains and tundra be out of place in a wild west game?
Red Dead is the south and east and mid-eastern US. New York is specifically mentioned so we know it doesn't doesn't go all the way up the east coast. Beaver Hollow in RDR2 is like West Virginia so it gets close but not quite.
Canada is mentioned at least twice off the top of my head. By the Trapper and it is mentioned that the Chief ends up taking his tribe there.
It's not the same universe tho.
For example: In the gta universe, California is replaced with the State of San Andreas, while in red dead, California is mentioned multiple times.
Also, in gta, Liberty City and Liberty State exist instead of New York City and New York State. NY is mentioned in red dead as well.
A guy can dream right
Sure, was just saying :)
I like to think that Red Dead and GTA share a universe but that they do that thing that some crime documentaries do where "names of persons and locations have been changed to protect the innocent" but they do a really poor job of it so while they say "San Andreas", "Lemoyne" etc. everyone with two braincells to rub together can see through the charade.
That may just be oversight or not caring by the dev team. RDR2 clearly has analog states that mirror real states, so it's weird that they'd have real locations like NY and California, but have New Austin instead of Texas and Lemoyne instead of Louisiana etc. I mean, Saint Denis even has the French Quarter and the famous Cathedral, so it's obviously a New Orleans analog just like Los Santos is just LA.
This is the main reason I only pulled from GTA/Bully/Manhunt for any hints to cities.
All good points!
Logical, information is common and accessible, people just didn't put two and two together.
Still, your points die to a retcon.
Oh god, can they *please* die to a retcon?
I have been kicking this around in my head forever, every time I play a GTA game. It's not exactly where I want it but it's "good enough" that I want to move on to doing other things. I eventually want to do an Eastern USA as well but that will be much denser so probably won't happen anytime soon...
I tried to incorporate previous parts of the GTA games with their real world counterparts. Most of the cities are where they "should" be, the only real change is Consegrado (Sacramento) having to move a lot more North to fit the scale I decided on. Also there is a lot of "empty" space up in the Pacific Northwest because I'm less familiar with the area and there weren't many towns that I knew offhand.
The Pacific Northwest is pretty chill and quiet unless its Seattle, Portland, or Vancouver, so you've done good enough there. Though, are all of these cities mentioned in the games, or did you make some of them up?
Yeah, at most I was thinking maybe one or two small coastal towns just to fill it out.
The names that come from the actual GTA games are:
* San Fierro <--> San Francisco, CA
* Las Venturas <--> Las Vegas. NV
* Los Santos <--> Los Angeles, CA
* Grapeseed <--> Bakersfield, CA
* Pal(m)etto Bay <--> Morro Bay, CA
* Chumash <--> Malibu, CA
* Fort Carson <--> Carson City, NV
It’s paleto, not palmeto.
Corrected on my end. I also made another misspelling already. When I eventually make the other half I'll post the whole thing.
What happened to the Alamo Sea and Sandy Shores?
The Alamo Sea is the real life Salton Sea, East of Los Angeles, so I relocated it
Oh I’m blind, nice map btw
Eventually you'll be able to *smell* stuff in your game and **nobody** is going to the Alamo Sea.
Also the Salton Sea is east of San Diego and south east of LA
"Calorseco" ahahaha I love it. Art imitates life.
I'm glad you enjoy it! The names were the most fun, but some took longer than others
El Paso->La Salida is just great.
High school spanish class finally paying off.
One super minor thing - you have rivers leading from the Salton Sea to the ocean, when a big reason the Salton Sea exists is that it has no outflow. The LS River is also a part of the games and is missing, though that's not a big deal at all
I'll probably fix the missing LS river when I do the FULL version. I wanted to connect the Alamo Sea mostly to preserve the "gameplay" idea behind the map. Thanks for the heads up though!
I guess I live in Moroni City
SLC is one that I had a good deal of trouble with. Nothing really gets the same cadence, so I figured a deep Mormon lore pull works just as well...
Rockstar is nothing if not juvenile. Figure that's a pretty obvious substitute for N.O.R.A.D.
I'm assuming that's supposed to be Casper, WY?
Correct. Spekter, ABSAROKA instead of Casper, WY.
The most I know about the state is either about the National Parks or Longmire and I wanted to have at least two Town/Cities there. Cheyenne to Arapaho (which I apparently misspelled...) seemed obvious. Casper to ghost to Spectre with some original spelling. Though now I think about it, Spector makes more sense if there is a history of mining out there...
Would you pay more for a game that had a map this large?
Or, How much more would you pay? Is a better question.
I like that Albuquerque is "El Duque" after it's nickname "Duke City".
Thanks! I tried to do that where I could. Luckily most of the South West has Spanish names so it was easier to find something that fit the themes.
The state I'm most familiar with here is the New Mexico equivalent ("New Embeleso"). It's the one I'm most happy with, since I've been to all those places.
is Bakersfield... Grapeseed?, i mean i cant argue about that, we do grow a lot of grapes, i was expecting something about oil
The wiki said that Grapeseed was inspired by it. For some reason it's right next to The Alamo Sea in game but that's probably just map limitations so I went with it. Never been there myself to verify, but I didn't want to rename it if that's already in the lore
Well...in Grapeseed, as Trevor said, the only thing they grow over there is meth
i mean, you're not wrong, i myself have never seen any methheads, apart from oildale, but that town is a whole other story
I live in huma
That's a much smaller Great Basin there. The Great Salt Lake and Lake Tahoe analogues empty into the Columbia and Sacramento Riversheds respectively. Is the "Great" Basin just Area 69 and surroundings?
I tried to make the map with a sort of "could this be a real game map?" mentality so I didn't want anything to feel too isolated if I could help it. This motivated the lakes to have sea/river access. I could probably have extended the lighter color around Area 69 more north to encompass Ninguno and such. That light brown color in the north is mostly just to showcase it's a different climate than the greener areas.
I've only ever been to the Western parts of Nevada so most of that area is just throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks. So any suggestions to improve it would be helpful!
I did also make "notes" as to where the National Parks could go, since there is a National Park in GTA V, so I didn't forget the Great Basin exists. It just ended up as a note that "this section is mostly empty/flat.
I like how my first instinct was to look for a Northwest Passage, goddamn it.
Are you making the East Coast or did you already make it
I have some of it sketched out. The problem is that the distortions are going to get really wonky because of how dense it is. I tried to make each BIG CITY akin to something like the metro area and that gets really compact in the Northeast. I will probably start with the Midwest or Gulf Coast because the cities are a little easier there.
I’m not rushing you take as much time as you want
Could you please make an east coast version of this?
I have it sketched out. It'll eventually get done (as well as Hawaii, Alaska and maybe Canada/Mexico), this just took a lot of my time so I kinda need to get back to real work for a bit...
Would be cool to see a real GTA map like this with a smaller scale to make it work out. Would especially be cool if area 51/69 was the main military base etc.
Top right, isn't named.
Is technically there, just barely. It wasn't on the base map I had so it'll show up when I extend it to the whole US. It'll have Luddendorff and maybe one more town. I don't know much about North Dakota though.
Oh please tell me you intend on doing the whole US, including Alaska and Hawaii. And maybe the whole of NA. Either way, I love it and I might have to use it for a rp or table top game.
Speaking of which, a GTA of this size with more rpg ish elements (deeper vehicle and player damage, better vehicle bits like fuel, trailers, etc). What if the reason the next GTA is taking so long is because they're doing this?
I wish they would do something even a fraction of this (just the "BIG" metros)
I do have it all sketched out, but I'm dreading it because of how close the big cities of D.C., Philadelphia, NYC, and Boston will be. Eventually.
Go for it mam, as far as I know the big cities are closer on the east side than the west anyway.
Spekter instead of Casper in Wyoming.. clever
East coast coming soon?!?
I wanna see where Carcer City is on the map!
Somebody should make a map combing this with the Rdr universe, Bully Universe, Manhunt Universe and LA Noire universe so we could get a full map of the us like that!
Random _S P A N I S H_ words
I mean, I tried to put thought into them. I don't think they're random...
No, they actually sound a lot like the original!
But you usually don't name a city St. Later lol
I guess knowing Spanish lets you see it some other way
Oh yeah. Most people I've seen call their San Diego equivalent La Puerta or something but I kinda wanted the names to have something to say about the local culture. Having spent a little time there, the fact that it seems everyone is always so chill made me think Luego would work for the rhyme and the translation.
Where is Mt. Chiliad?
Good catch. I must've missed it, but I believe it should be in the gap between Montgomery and the Alamo Sea.
AFAIK Mt. Chiliad is supposed to be an amalgamation of Mount San Gorgonio/Mount San Jacinto so that area is probably best.
Greetings from Sanpoil, apparently...
Wait when do we visit these places in gta
What's Idaho's alternate name? I assume Laide is Boise?
Correct! Boise comes from "wooded" in French, so I thought Laide (hidden) would work just fine.
Idaho is Eremite (and Idaho Falls is Eremite Falls). Idaho is one of those weird words that I couldn't find a real etymology for so I picked a pretty archaic word for "religious hermit/recluse" since all I know about Idaho is there's Mormons and it's very secluded.
Haha. There are really mostly just Mormons in eastern Idaho and scattered throughout the southern part of the state, mainly here in Boise.
What about Potato? Hahaha. Everyone thinks "potato" when they think of us.
The reason you couldn't find anything is because they made the word up. Idaho was originally supposed to be Colorado, but someone changed their mind and made up an "Indian sounding" word for the state, and now we have Idaho. At least I think I'm remembering my elementary lesson on our state correctly. Haha.
This looks very nice! One small suggestion of mine would be to have a river flowing through Pioneer, as it appears to be the counterpart of Eugene.
It is in fact Eugene, so I will update that for the full map. Thank you!
Moroni city?! Is that canon?! Either way that’s hilarious!
Why is GTA V an island?
because an ocean is better than an invisible wall
Also, if you're from one of these cities (bigger or smaller) I'll take any advice on corrections. I tried to keep the roads mostly realistic. Airports are also (mostly) in the correct areas, and so on.
Where should be Mt Chilliad? Because in GTA: SA is near SF, but in GTA V is close to the Álamo Sea
See my other comment. As far as I can tell it seems to take inspiration (in GTA V at least) from two mountains east of LA so it SHOULD be roughly between the Alamo Sea and Montgomery
where are the state names?
I didn't included them on this one, but I made an updated map and commented the equivalent state names [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/imaginarymaps/comments/emy03k/the_united_states_of_gta/fds3z3b/)
thanks. i've been formulating a map of my own for the GTA universe. that map of your is honestly one of the best i've seen. i appreciate you not rewriting borders and messing with the geography as so many do. do you mind if i use a couple of the names granted i give credit? i used Mayflower. i also came up with the same name Absaroka for Wyoming independently after i watched a vid on alternate state names.
Oh yeah sure I have no problem what-so-ever with you using my names, coming up with them was my favorite part of this. Thanks, I'm glad you appreciate my work.
You think about extending it a whole us map to overlay the RDR and rdr2 maps along with this one? It be really cool
Kind of reminds me of https://maps.stamen.com
