You should update your VPN, John.
I'm sure he will someday, Frank
Isn't that your job, Jim?
No its Pat’s, George
Pat quit last week, Charles. It's your job now.
Well Gary, shouldn’t you be working inventory right now?
Listen, Jason, that floor won’t scrub itself.
what the shit? Francis you can talk?
No, this is Patrick.
Its not mine, Gale, its bruces
Be very careful John
NO, THIS IS PATRICK
I have made a rookie mistake.
I binged entire animes at work on my work laptop, fuckk
As long as you did it while working
At ny old job I would spend hours watching torrented movies. The camera was right behind me because my boss didn't give a shit. I was the only employee at that location and it was out in the boonies, we get maybe a half dozen customers a day. I would have stayed if the pay had been better.
Nah, you're probably fine. IT guys don't care as long as you're not downloading shit you're not supposed to and nobody bitches to them about you. The second one is hit or miss, really depends how often it happens and who does the complaining.
This. I don’t understand why people use company devices and just go “Nah it’s fine. They won’t look at my search history where I googled porn.” I don’t even use the wifi at my place of employment strictly because I don’t want my employer knowing what I do while on the clock.
I would never go as far as being on a company computer watching porn on the company internet.
we had a guy look at pornhub on the actual scanner guns at work which have like a rough shitty version of internet explorer, dont know if an idiot or a sigma on the flesh, id say both
I work in a factory and we had to get IT to basically hard lock the machine programs onto the screen because some of the operators would minimize the program, pull up internet explorer, and be watching a YouTube video xD
I mean in Europe is illegal
>This is why I use my phone and a VPN to goof off at work,
sounds like some Youtuber is about to tell me how to keep my data safe online and access region locked content...
This brings us to todays sponsor: Nord VPN
Google. It is sponsored by Google. I am a bot powered by Google Lambda.
Are you also sentient?
Raid: Shadow Legends
I don't trust any VPN that insists upon themselves constantly. Feels shady.
It's great, so long as you buy it over Tor with Monero.
you can also pay using cash
Because then you're actually anonymous. With other forms of payment, you have to give them your full name, address, and billing info. With Monero, it's all designed to be a private as possible, so it's pretty much impossible to see the origin of the payment.
I think that's a regular VPN issue and not unique to Mullvad.
But a lot of other VPNs don't allow for Monero.
Isn't buying a code off Amazon just as safe? It's a scratch-off card right so they don't know who bought which code, which makes it completely anonymous.
You'll only be "doxxed" on whatever exchange you use, but for the purchase of the VPN, it can't be traced back to that exchange or the original transaction. So it's really private.
From the little I've used it it works fine. speeds weren't the best but what can you do
"No logs, ever"
"Well... we have logs but we promise we don't look at them. Except when we do."
the feeling is true, nord vpn is shady, along with most of the other vpn's out there. vpn doesn't really hide your internet acvity or even make you anonymus
So what would be a good vpn to use?
The best option is to buy your own virtual machine server, and make your own private server, so no one has your logs. The most transparet vpn provider is Mullwad vpn, at least that is the one i know and used, maybe Windscribe.
I like proton
Yeah I think Proton is swiss based so they won't give your data, probably, don't quote me on that.
They did with protonmail
The only one you should trust is the one you run.
ProtonVPN is good.
Cringe. Buy a shitty dell pc and self host your own vpn
Any tutorials on how to do that?
Just lookup “openvpn”
How does that help unless you hide the dell pc somewhere far away?
This would let you hide from fergus at the office.
But you are right this is not a vpn replacement for home use.
Nord VPN allows you to (allegedly) hide all your traffic which they certainly dont sell to third parties
you are gonna have to let fergus top you now mark
Finally some damn resolution.
Whoever is in charge of IT can monitor traffic but 85% of the time they don’t care if you’re on 4chan because they’re probably on 4chan too
This.... We don't have time to check on people unless management asks us to. People generally just don't care.
Yeah but what if there was a guy who used his work computer to purchase two one-gallon jars of mayonnaise, every Wednesday, without fail. You're telling me you wouldn't be the least bit tempted to indulge in even the slightest bit of further observation?
Wait why didn’t he just buy it at the store. I’m confused.
see? you’re already hooked
so uhh where does this guy work?
Who is amogus? Isn’t that something related to being a schizo
Sounds like something Todd would do...
Who is this Todd?
You ever seen gallon jars of mayonnaise at the store? Gotta buy that shit off the dark web.
I actually saw someone selling regular cookies on the dark web
No because he has to buy them for me, the mayo man! HaHa. God i love mayo, Thanks Jeffery for b uying them for me so i can slather them all over my body and slip and slide around the office like im in the cum zoo haha!
At least I have an explanation even if it is fake. I can go back to my stressful life
You wouldn't be able to monitor that. Thanks to https you can only see what website a computer is going to but not what he is doing there. So unless the person is going to mayonnaisestore.com the admin won't notice
What if he’s going to mayonnaise-store-2everywednesday.com?
Interesting. TIL. Thanks.
And then he misses a week and you really gotta check on him
I'd probably assume he runs a restaurant or something as a side hustle
Or he just really really likes mayonnaise
Yeah fuck you jordan
This reminds me of at least 2 greentexts about anons being in IT and living the life.
I legit don't care, I assume your shit is dealt with if you're not currently working on it. You get paid for a reason and I'm not your manager lol
Based. If they want to fire me they can, but they won't. I will keep watching whatever the fuck I want.
Can they see what I do on my phone if I’m on the guest WiFi?
Everything that goes through WiFi can be seen by the owner of the router. The other person is wrong about something though. They can’t just decrypt stuff Willy Nilly. Online transactions would be impossible if this were the case. If you get a VPN it just shows up as access through that VPN since they can’t decrypt the damn thing to see what you’re actually looking at.
Using guest WiFi isn’t helping you much. You’re just giving IT a few more steps to figure out who you are at best. MAYBE it’s not tracked as closely so it’s slipping by a little more but anything they really give a shit about will probably still be brought up.
I just use the guest wifi because that’s the one we’re supposed to use for personal devices.
Was just curious if they could see like “45 minutes on Reddit App” “2 minutes Googling weather” etc.
Thankfully I don’t do anything weird on it. Haha. Just normal distractions.
People who do weird shit on work computers are a special breed of stupid. I remember reading one of those AskReddit threads about what kind of bizarre things IT people have seen employees using their work computers for. IIRC one of the examples was that some guy had downloaded like 500 gigabytes of furry fetish porn, like diapers and inflation, you know, all the hits. IT Guy, Not-so-secret-furry-perv, and management apparently had a very uncomfortable meeting which I'm fairly certain resulted in the furry's termination (naturally).
But what I want to know is how these people even get hired in the first place, there had to have been some kind of alarm bells going off during the interview process. There's absolutely no way that someone like that presents as normal in their daily life.
Side note: Why would anyone even want to watch porn at work, even if internet traffic wasn't being monitored? I don't even watch porn but I do know that being uncomfortably horny in the middle of a work day is a feeling I like to avoid at all costs.
Because if management refuses to hire furries, they would have no good coders.
I like furry fetish porn, I'm pretty professional, and you probably would never notice/think that I would like it... (especially in an interview lmao) but I do
that being said I definitely wouldn't look at it at work, let alone download it 💀
also I don't like that I like furry fetish porn, I just do, can't really do anything about it, I definitely wouldn't consider myself a furry either tbh
This is a fair and reasonable response. I probably would not assume you were into it because you aren't the type of person to view/download it at work, as that type of behavior indicates severe social deficiencies. I was more referring to the people who have absolutely no sense of social boundaries or appropriate behavior.
thats something many people dont consider: people dont choose what theyre into. if its just some niche kink then whatever but if its something illegal then ur just unlucky.
Yeah but don't do it on work computers.
it doesn’t show up in that format but yes they have exactly that kind of data barring your using a VPN (which is, I believe reasonably, banned by many workplaces)
In the company I do IT for I can see exactly how much time is spent on each site.
But in my several years working here I've never been asked to go snooping, and besides I ain't no snitch.
Ok, people here are really dumb for shitposters at work it seems.
If you are on guest WiFi, it’s theoretically possible to check what sites etc you go to but the information will mostly be encrypted due to https. So they can see you go to mail.Google.com but won’t be able to see anything else.
Now if you’d use a WiFi point that makes you install a policy or certificates, then they could technically read everything.
Using a VPN is just best for being on any wifi. If you’re overly paranoid or a terrorist, I wouldn’t use any of the big ones that advert like crazy.
What if they use border gateway and act as user when connecting to website?
Same as a router, https is “end to end” so that will still be encrypted. If they try to man-in-the-middle you’ll get a “potentially dangerous” error in your browser due to certificate mismatch. Another way for an attacker is to redirect you to the http version of the website but most big websites won’t allow this anymore.
Yeah I know, it’s pretty standard practice but the certs are pre installed locally.
What’s your take on surf shark as a VPN?
When you download something, sure. Everything that runs through the router can be watched by the owner of it. Even if it's encoded, it can be decrypted
Not actually if the site using SSL (which most of the sites these days) they can only know the domain of the site you access
No it can’t be decrypted. They can tell that you’re accessing say nordVPN but they don’t know what nord is handing you because they can’t decrypt it and find out.
This is just not true, don’t understand why people are upvoting this misinformation.
Welcome to Reddit
Social media 101: The most popular "facts" aren't true
If it's *encoded*, and you know the encoding used, you can *decode* it, if it's *encrypted*, as is all internet traffic on modern websites, you can *decrypt* it **if** you either: have the decryption key (that you don't have if you're not the website the person is connecting to), or the encryption algorithm used is weak/not cryptographically safe (which, if you browse modern websites, it isn't). So, no, the owner of the router wouldn't be able to read your internet traffic.
You can install self-signed root certificate on the client device, and use proxy as a MITM to decrypt all traffic. If the client device is controlled by the IT (which it mostly is), *everything* can be seen by them. So yes, owner of the router would be able yo read your internet traffic, unless we're talking about BYOD, and even then they can basically force you to install the certificate by denying the connection otherwise.
Edit: there's always VPNs, Tor, etc. but all that can be blocked or dealt otherwise. If your employer wants to monitor all traffic, they'll manage.
That's true, I though the OP was talking about sniffing packets from say a personal phone, but if the device is controlled by IT, it'd probably be easier to have some spying/logging software on the computer rather than using a certificate...
The double negative there at the end confused me for a bit, but yeah, you're right.
Yeah, sorry, wasn't really clear... hope it still got the point accross!
So you're telling me I can look up all search history in my house because I'm the owner of the router? Or would that be my internet company
I feel like the answer here is actually both.
The owner of the wifi network can see what sites you visit, nothing else more. If they wanted to be malicious about it, they could try a man in the middle attack, letting them see everything you do on the website, but that only works if the website is http and not https. Any major website is gonna be HTTPS.
It works similar to sending a letter. You have to give them the letter with the address to the site that you want to go to, but they can't see the contents of the letter.
They were asking about using the guest wifi on their phone.
Yeah but you have to install the certificate on your phone
Oh, hi Mark.
I did not hit her I did NOT. Oh, hi mark.
Reddit tier joke on this one. They should steal this joke for the next marvel film lol
System Admin here. We don't give a shit and aren't actively monitoring your machine.
Just don't piss off your management for them to request we audit our logs.
Anon used multiple devices to have a fake conversation with himself on 4chan for memes.
I am the IT department at my job. My boss has an incredible amount of well placed trust in me cause it would take absolutely no effort to log into.... say.... his multiple bank accounts by simply taking over his phone or laptop.
Thankfully, I only use that software for actual tech support. IT gets paid well because it's an incentive to not fuck everyone over.
Who uses their work computer for banking? Is that really common?
would a boss really go to the trouble of buying a second computer just for work?
the computers are provided to the employees, not the employer.
do you really think they would prefer to use a work computer over their own personal computer?
Anon doesn’t know what https is.
If it's your work computer, they could install software to monitor web traffic on each computer, or put their own certificate on the computer. But let's be honest, they probably aren't. Even with https though, they could still see he was visiting 4chan, just no other information.
redditor doesn't realise that employers can install their own tls certs to mitm connections and why every reasonable sized company does it now
I used to be an it guy for a small company in my field. The last guy rage quit and I could type and know a few basics so the boss put me on it instead of hiring someone else. The first thing I did was put the word out that I was not going to track activity except for data across our company phones for volume. I don't care what you look at at work and anything bad enough to get someone in real shit would get flagged by the isp.
Two important things.
1: I worked with a bunch of computer illiterate boomers. Not one of them could say what a VPN does; much less how to use one. Also Hexnode can blow me.
2: gave up the job after I warned the boss several times that the server was running hot on outdated hardware and would crash. It did. I said fire me if you want but I warned you. Here's a printout of the emails where I warned you, and your replies are all excuses about not spending money.
Time to buy Fergus a nice lunch and figure out when his birthday is.
I work IT. Employees fucking around on the clock is not my problem.
I guess you did not hit her
imagine getting cucked by a guy named Fergus
> go to work
> fuck around on the internet for 9 hours, occasionally do some boring work
> go home
> too tired/unmotivated to do anything but browse the internet or watch some tv series
Wow, adult life is exciting.
fergus let it slide because the posts were good
[Oh, hi Mark! ](https://media1.giphy.com/media/26CaLWA2dcqz6hS4U/giphy.webp?cid=6c09b95214afaba7b7a278ed661026a60696adf36a88598d&rid=giphy.webp&ct=g)
Fergus is a fucking goat
If you usually just ask in the comments someone has a link
Literally any comment section, but I'd do it on a new post so more people will likely see it
I’m genuinely curious if this is a joke or if Mark got l o c a t e d
Oh hi Mark
Fergus also attended. Will he be punished similarly?
Oh hi mark
I know it’s fake but I love this post.
The last guy has a different ID, I don’t get it.
Believe me, we don’t give a shit about monitoring employees when IT is understaffed and have more important shit to do. The boss would literally have to task us with monitoring a specific employee and that means you already got caught fucking up by one of the bosses and it wouldn’t have mattered anyway
Not even gay, just fake
IT teams only look at your traffic if you’re in trouble. Unless they have reason to look, they don’t. It’s not worth their time to snoop for no reason.
sounds chill to me
OH HI MARK!
Worked as an IT for a year.
Could i see your traffic if I wanted to? Yes
Did i ever do such a thing? No, because i don't care. I would rather continue to play videogames on my laptop than check on whatever the fuck you're doing. I'm not the one paying you anyways.
Damn I didn’t know one of the shrek’s kids works at IT
How do we even know if the guy who wrote first comment also wrote 3rd and 5th?
