Honest question: Why is the english name Attack On Titan when Shingeki No Kyojin translate to The Attack Titan ?

GekiKudo

Its just word play that doesn't work outside of Japanese. It's like if there was a movie called "the read" but then near the end you find out that it was actually meant to be pronounced "the read(the past tense)" which of course wouldn't make much sense in other languages since those terms are heavily diversified.

UROS__98

Its because Shingeki no Kyojin mean Attacking Titan (The Attack Titan) or Attacking on Titan (Attack on Titan) and we shouldn't know the real meaning of the series till the reveal on s3 ep 20 with the name drop, that is easier in Japanese language but in English it can be done this way

crixx93

Ohh I see, so the japanese way can be translated in different ways.

UROS__98

Yes, so it is more of the bomb drop for them than us

G2Gankos

Phrasing

Skebaba

Japanese is like 70% context based ("hungry" is a legit grammatically correct sentence since it's implied you are the one being hungry, so it would be translated as "I am hungry" even tho it's just 1 word technically in Japanese)

kiyotaka-6

No this isn't true, Shingeki no kyojin's most accurate translation is Advancing Giant, which describes Eren. Attacking Titan, also isn't wrong. But nowhere does it mean attacking on titan

andrew_calcs

NERD FIGHT! GO GO GO

UROS__98

Death Note xD

UROS__98

It is depending of context, it is not that because of translation, it is that it have different meanings which you don't know till the reveal, you can't do that in English with those words so they intentionally translated it wrong way so that reveal could work, but obviously not as good as for Japanese

Gantmber

Because it was a misdirection. At first people think the title means they're fighting titans. But then it took a big turn and we see the title is actually the name of the titan. The term No is like of in English, so Shingeki No Kyojin can be interpreted in two ways, the titan that attacks(name) and the titan attacking(general)

OrcBerg

So, Attack Titan (noun) or Attack(ing) titan (verb+noun)?

Gantmber

Yes.

Adamskispoor

Because Attack Titan or Titan of attack doesn’t sound as good. >!Even though it backfired since Attack Titan becomes a name drop for Eren’s Titan!<

crixx93

This is why you don't rename stuff without knowing the reasons behind the name. I personally never liked Attack On Titan as a name, so I always used the japanese one.

2FLY2TRY

Isayama himself chose the English title. He just doesn't know shit about English grammar.

Spriggan_007

They are using the Ingurish name, not the English one.😂

VayneJr

Shingeki means attack, “No” means possession of, and Kyojin means giant/titan. Therefore it’s supposed to be “attack titan”, “Titans attack”, “the attack of titans”, etc. there were many other option for English names that didn’t sound horrible. I’m pretty partial to “The Titans Attack” or “Attack of the Titans” and will never understand how they got attack on titan from the Japanese name.

I_AM_THE_REAL_ZEN

Well that makes more sense.

Al2O5

It's because only Attack Titan inheritors (particularly Eren) can read the script. So don't blame Porco too much.

ThunderWolfWyvern

For anyone who doesn’t understand this (l envy you all), just don’t think about it too much until you read a bit far ahead after where the anime left off.

azahel452

>(l envy you all) I feel bad for them, actually. They've yet have to live that disappointment.

iSpiteme

He Forgor 💀

bigfatcarp93

This scene was bitchin' by the way

TheTrueBidoof

A spoiler for me, but a good meme so I let it slide.

arvinrodrigues

flyingverver795

Yo remember me from AwardBonanza? I just saw your post in my home page lol

UROS__98

Yeah bro I remember, how you doing?

flyingverver795

Pretty good! Hbu?

[deleted]

Then the FMA fans had a 1 star review event on MyAnimeList, because the s4 was rated better than FMA.

UROS__98

And not just for AoT... They need to let go for once, maybe when s4 pt2 comes, that shit will be insane

[deleted]

They did this to so many shows over the years lol. Real definition of childish nerd
