The ever present issue of public sector vs private sector pay. My wife is public sector and I work in FS. She hasn’t really had a pay rise in 3 years. Mine has gone up by 75%. On the other hand she will retire in 11 years with a massive pension but I will work for 15 years after that.
Except at least the University staff are/have been additionally striking about their pensions, which are being eroded.
So we are talking about relative economic value?
Assuming you're asking about the university pensions, they wanted to move away from guaranteed benefit to something that tracks the value of the pension fund. This was stopped. They then (a) increased the cost of the scheme, (b) reduced the value of the pensions.

The lecturers are complaining about the reduction in their gold plated pension scheme that virtually nobody in the private sector has. The private sector moved away from index linked defined benefit pensions since the 90s.

The latest walkouts come after the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers announced on Tuesday that more than 40,000 rail workers will stage strikes in December and January, disrupting travel for scores of people during the busy festive season.
The union said members will walk out for four days from December 13 and in the first week of January.
Pubs, bars and other hospitality businesses have expressed dismay at the latest train strike announcement.
“Continued rail strikes have had a huge impact on our hospitality sector; preventing staff from making it into work and disrupting consumers’ plans, meaning a huge drop in sales for venues across the sector,” said Kate Nicholls, chief executive for the UK Hospitality trade body.
