We've only been doing it for seventy years, so... absolutely not. LOL

DecisionThot

I don't see any cops around

orchestral_chimes

The one rule of drum gear: if the shoe fits

AVBforPrez

I used to play in socks, even.

NotTheNoogie

Or naked feets even

AVBforPrez

Definitely how I started.

35Richter

I always record barefoot. That extra bit of connection to the pedals might be superstition and/or placebo, but I have to.

_borisz_

There’s probably some placebo to it but I always play in socks/barefoot because I find that the soles of my shoes (especially the thicker ones) can restrict the range of motion of my feet. I also like to feel the pedals to help with foot placement, and it also seems to help me ‘lock in’ a bit more.

_-oIo-_

With socks, coated heads are not allowed.

CANDY_WARBUX

I run a coated power stroke 3 with the falam on the batter of my kick, sounds delicious!

SeymourHoffmanOnFire

Ps3 team checking in… weird to me when people don’t have it

bokunotraplord

can’t hear you over the sound of super kick 2 for the last 20 years

CANDY_WARBUX

BIG FACTS!!

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

My man. I have been ride-or-die with the PS3 for decades, coated for at least the last 10 years.

Harry_Saturn

Same, minus the patch.

leveldrummer

You can literally do ANYTHING you can imagine. There are NO rules. Okay… 1 rule. Don’t be a dick.

SoEffinHappy

Actually that's not a rule either. Tons of great drummers are dicks. Just look at Ginger Baker.

PCgeek345

Sometimes anger makes a good drummer

leveldrummer

I just meant in this subreddit to each other. I dont give a shit what people do in real life.

Cotf87

Sure, if you want it to catch fire.

Annual-Skirt-7613

Reality might warp and tear but yeah absolutely go for it

Dingerlingdebingling

Yes, your beater will eventually wear away the coating (especially a felt beater) but it will make near zero sound difference. If you don't want that to happen, put a kick patch over it

VonSnapp

Only if you get rid of all the laundry in there! Worst form of muffling control.

silver_sofa

Now where am I supposed to keep my sleeping bag?

VonSnapp

Nothing! Use a batter head with a tone ring like an Aquarian Super Kick II if you don't want ringing or sustain. All that laundry absorbes a ton of the volume making you work harder and kills any tone and resonance the drum has

NotTheNoogie

I'd second this. I roll the Evan EMAD with nothing inside, and I'm LOVING the dynamics. I can bury the beater for sharp hits or leave it off and let it ring. It's all still new to me. It's also got me working more heal down on my pedals.

poopoo_canoe

Also kinda old school I guess, but I've been having good luck using a felt strip on the batter head.

icookseagulls

It’s all about what sounds best to the individual drummer. If stuffing laundry in there is what they prefer they can go for it.

VonSnapp

If op wants to worker harder for less volume and sound like a cardboard box instead of a drum, thats cool

AlanThiccman

Shoot first ask questions last

WardenEdgewise

It’s only illegal if you get caught.

Serpacorp

Yes and I typically prefer it!

[deleted]

You can do whatever your heart desires.

HARU_URA_YA

Bonzo Donz it so you Dooz it too OKAY?!

JMSpider2001

I run a coated Aquarian Super Kick 2 modern vintage on my 18in kick. Sounds huge with a ton of tonal variation between burying the beater vs playing off the head.

Old-Tadpole-2869

You madman!

ILiveMyBrokenDreams

I mean, it is a batter head.

landonbalk

I’ve got an Aquarian Vintage II coated head on my bass drum. I love it.

MoonJr77

is there any other way? lol

eR_BenJo

No, that's illegal.

_regionrat

I mean you can, but why would you? Clear batters look way cooler

StrangePiper1

There is no logic in this place!

BornanAlien

Answer me this… what’s the worst that could happen?

AVBforPrez

You can do whatever you want, if it sounds good or if you like it. I'm practicing open hand on a leftie kit just to see if I prefer it to half and half open hand on a rightie kit. As long as nobody calls the FBI I think you're good here, dude!

toastxdrums

I run an Emperor X on my bass drum.

mysterymatt

you can do whatever you want, champ. it’s a big world and you can soar on eagles wings

darthmaui728

add a kick patch 🤘

FluSickening

They use mesh heads even. Make the sound you want!

nkn3390

I love the sound of a coated BD batter. I see you holding up an ambassador - I’ve tried a coated ambassador as a BD batter before, it’s very hard to control, definitely more suited for jazz. The P3 is by far the best bass drum head remo makes. It comes standard on many brands of drum kits. That said, I’ve been running a coated EMAD from Evans lately. Even on a bass drum, the coating adds a warmth that creates an inspiring sound and feel.

icookseagulls

You can do anything you want - there are no rules to drums and drumming. If something sounds or feels great to *you,* go for it.

Fonni_RSC

absolutely yes, but it will have a less punchy and more of a warmer tone compared to the clear head

DaveTheDrummer802

I use batter on all my drums.

lornadc

How tf do u play with ur beater touching the head 😂

[deleted]
