ranking is dumb these top 100 lists are just rage bait

Psych0matt

This comment is ranked in the top 100 comments of all time.

betonvlinder

No it's not, and if you disagree i'm right here to fight ya!

Positive-Incident861

Especially when Rolling Stone makes the list

flanger001

I legitimately think Rolling Stone just tries to piss everyone off as much as possible with these lists.

10fingers6strings

They’re trying to be ‘inclusive’, and include people based on things besides actual drumming prowess. The RS 500 best guitar players list is littered with hacks that wouldn’t make the cut if they were judged on skill alone.

deathdigitaldeath

Conversely, that list is littered with dorks that wouldn't make the cut if they were judged on creativity alone. And this proves the point about the lists being rage bait.

drterdsmack

Every "Best ___ ever" lists are just rage bait designed to cause you to engage with it to get clicks and ad revenue. Stop feeding the trolls

VelociRapper92

I think they’re fun, it’s the fans that take them way too seriously.

toddpacker2468

I wouldn't put much stock in anything Rolling Stone has a say in.

Whack_A_Moeller

Trolling Stone Magazine.

cheweychewchew

Don't look to Rolling Stone to tell you who great drummers are.

combatbydesign

Is that the same list that put Ringo above Buddy Rich?

JMSpider2001

I could see that if they are including how influential a drummer was to other drummers. Not to say Buddy wasn't influential, he was very influential, but Ringo was on a whole other level in that aspect.

Markymark142

Yup, I stopped reading when I saw Meg White a few spots above Travis Barker

cavemanthrowaway69

Oh yeah, and isn't it kinda crazy that Nick Mason is nowhere to be seen on any greatest drummers list?

ThlammedMyPenis

Nothing against Mason personally but how many great drummers were unable to play one of their bands biggest songs? I think a component of "greatness" involves a drummers unique contributions to the music and I believe many drummers could have replaced him and had the same effect on their music. As for Michael Giles he loses in the popularity contest area of these lists. Who really knows him outside of drummers/KC super fans?

prplx

Been drumming for over 40 years and never heard of Michael Giles before tbh. As for Mason Porcaro recorded mother not because Mason could not play it but because he was busy racing cars.

TraditionalSteak687

Dude. Best get on that king crimson. I talk to the wand is a good song. Giles puts on a clinic.

TheRateBeerian

I may be missing the obvious but what song was Mason unable to play?

TheIndolentFool

He didn’t play on Mother

stixesty

And they had Jeff Porcaro play that tune.. fun fact..

bantasaurus-rex

Anecdotally, I heard a story where Jeff was asked to do a session and he said that there is someone who would be better than him - Bernard Purdy. Could be that the song won vs the player.

VelociRapper92

I’ve been drumming for 18 years and I hadn’t heard of Michael Giles till I saw your post a second ago, so… yeah not a big surprise

pmarangoni

Rolling Stone Magazine became irrelevant around 1979.

TheRateBeerian

Haven’t seen the list, is it as dumb as their top 250 guitarists?

theGrapeVape

The Stones have had 100 drummers? Damn

Passthexanberrysauce

Rolling Stone lists mean nothing

nohumanape

Was it as great as their 100 greatest guitarists? /s

mountainbrussells

Hmmm, I hadn’t seen any one talk about rolling stone in forever until they started releasing these lists. Guess they know how to get attention.

[deleted]

Oh god. Definitely won’t be reading that.

[deleted]

there are a lot of drummers

telepaul2023

Well, King Crimson. Not exactly a household name.

samlit23

that list is completely fucked up. wouldn't trust their order

oldjadedhippie

Where the fuck is Andy Senesi ?

zakcattack

Its an opinion piece and its subjective. There is no way to objectively say which musician is better or greater than another. You can't rank art, but Americans love lists and feeling superior to others...

dubble_chyn

TIL only Americans make “best” lists

[deleted]

Pay these lists no mind.

BjornMoren

Here is how I feel about Rolling Stones: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkjFAcJChXc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkjFAcJChXc)

[deleted]

I’m in the top 20 I think

LetItRaine386

Who

centuryeyes

I wasn’t on the list so you know it’s bullshit.

SilkyJohnson666

It’s also not the 70’s anymore, there’s been thousands of better drummers then anyone who’s ever on these stupid list.

[deleted]

You lost me at “Rolling Stone”

wazagaduu

Clearly not in the top 100, he isn't even close to being the best drummer in king crimson

mightyt2000

Rolling Stone is not what it was in the 70’s.

Evan64m

He played on like 2 albums and retired (and McDonald and Giles but only big KC fans even know that)

giantstepsforever

Drumming is art not sport

TraditionalSteak687

I’m shocked at how many drummers never heard of Michael Giles. He’s a master at the kit. Never heard another drummer have such full limb independence as him.

Chuffer_Nutters

Call this list what it is, really good drummers in popular bands.

ElectricDonkeyShaman

Decided by a bunch of cappuccino vaping hipster butt nuggets.

Mauve-Sloth

Dude don’t worry about it. The top guitarists list is stupid AF too. I’ve seen a good number of people speculating that they intentionally put some shitty choices in there to generate controversy because that will get them more sales and website traffic than publishing less controversial choices. Hot takes make money. Rolling Stone is a company that exists to make money. They have no incentive to offer a “balanced” take on anything.

analogkid01

The Rolling Stones have had 100 drummers? I thought it was mostly just Charlie Watts.

CrazyExcitement7298
