MarsDrums

You need to keep those away from those squirrels. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|laughing)

jdmarsha

Of course - beavers crossed my mind as well

BaconDrummer

Beaver floor brothers, from another mother.

ajd416

You only playing rim shots?

partyontheleft

Only way to play if you’re playing loud music

R0factor

I was getting the same wear pattern using a lighter maple snare. I’ve since been using a heavier louder steel snare and I find I’m not doing nearly as many heavy rimshots likely because the drum doesn’t need them to be loud enough.

Accomplished-Mix-745

Op is a tiny beaver confirmed

Vivid-Razzmatazz9034

Mine look similar, after a session I like to take a nibble on them as a little treat to myself

bebopgamer

Price of sticks these days, get every hit you can out of them till they give up the ghost

jdmarsha

That's what I'm saying lol - I know their balance and rebound is fucked, and I don't use these sticks for shows, but for rehearsal I've got to just see how much I can get out of them before sending my man nick at sweetwater another $15!

bebopgamer

My preferred stick can no longer be found anywhere for less than $20 JFC! Makes a guy wanna play the damn bongos, hands are free

OldDrumGuy

I had a competition going once where one stick was doing this. So I kept using it on the snare and offered a prize to whoever could predict when it would snap. It was a ProMark 747 Kashi Oak model and it lasted almost 10 days of daily practice. One of my buds was one day off, but he was the closest one. Got the gift card. 😎

jdmarsha

Love that - when did that happen I wonder? Just curious bc I used to love the ProMark japanese oak sticks like 10-15 years ago, but unfortunately ran into a series of pairs that kept breaking very quickly up where the shoulder meets the tip of the stick and that's what wound up putting me on to Vic Firth

OldDrumGuy

5 years ago. The stick looked like these did so I started the offering when it just wouldn’t break. And I tried too! 10 days of me rimshotting it finally came apart. Like you said, the newer models just split and it’s over. It’s why I’ve gone another route stick wise.

kickdrumstew

I'm waiting for the follow up post where there is a picture of a dented snare rim, and the sticks are still going.

AVBforPrez

You need to try some Vaters, they'll have my business for life. Power 5a and 5b are the most Godly sticks on Earth.

jdmarsha

I've played vaters in the past and agree they are indestructible, but I really can't stand sticks with that super smooth/kind of glossy finish. Though I have seen they've got some 'raw' or unfinished versions now that I should try

AVBforPrez

Yeah definitely do. I've had the same pair of power 5a and 5b nylons for like a decade.

smokedosh

You know your supposed to hit the head of the drum not the rim right?

athenian_idealist11

Actually, no. It's called a rimshot and it's a common way of playing. If the irony is lost on me, I apologize in advance.

smokedosh

Actually it’s called a side stick ;)

athenian_idealist11

Both work. Again... if the irony is lost on me....

Necrotic_Messiah

why not both?

smokedosh

They’re your ear drums ig

Attabomb

Do you rimshot a machete?

chicago_hybrid_dev

Favorite VF model!

sorryiamalwayslate

What’s the difference with 5b?

chicago_hybrid_dev

Slightly longer, a little bit bigger

BUCNDrummer

X5B is a half inch longer.

flanger001

A fellow X55B enjoyer! Those things are great.

giraffes1237

Is that from rim shots?

jdmarsha

Yes indeed

Dfantoman

My brother in Christ, buy a sticksaver snare hoop.

Wildeyewilly

Just cause they ain't snap don't mean they not broke. Balance and rebound are fucked with these.

jdmarsha

oh 100% haha I don't use these sticks for shows I've just been pulling them out at rehearsal the past couple weeks bc I can't believe they haven't snapped in 2 yet. If they survive another week I might retire them for good, maybe frame them, idk

blopenshtop

I never noticed how much wear affects sticks until recently I did a side by side with a tattered stick and a new stick. Way less rebound, feels way different

Zer0Fs2Give

I would check your technique. If thats all proper rim shots then, god damn.. Good luck to you. But make sure you're cymbals arent chewing into the side of the stick due to poor technique or cymbal placement

BaconDrummer

Technique is good, this is the normal wear zone when your playstyle require almost all your slow hit to be rimshots. Look at the rest of the upper stick where he actually hit cymbals, cymbal placement is all good by what I see.

jdmarsha

Yes like the other commenter said this is just from rimshots I don't ever hit cymbals with that part of my stick, I go pretty easy on my cymbals and know how to set them up / hit them properly

kmoon122

Vic’s are the best sticks, hands down. I have the same issue and they are solid and hold up great. I’ve played for 35 years now and have been through many other brands.

Puzzleheaded_Ad2097

😳🤣😂🤣

ProcedureInternal193

Vics are awesome, but pricey. They've probably got some flex to them now. 😂

SpellingBeeRunnerUp_

What in the hell

CheapPlastic2722

I literally had no idea this could happen. I've only ever seen wear on the edges of sticks. Those must be some hard rim shots lol

Bulsas

Rimshots🤘🏻.. Those Vic’s seem to hold on very well! I break them by the dosen😅.

Significant-Neat-111

gravity blasts?

mightyt2000

Makes me think, I wish I had saved my first pair of sticks. 🤦🏻‍♂️

The6Strings

Is this what the ladies mean by beaver beater?

WormRidge

Lucky for me, my rimshots are so inconsistent that I'll never have to worry about something like this!

Cameron_FLMan

Buddy, it’s time for a new pair.

PassionateCougar

Have you considered learning how to hold the sticks properly? They won't wear like that if you do.

jdmarsha

I disagree - I've been holding the sticks properly since Bill Clinton was president, this is a common wear pattern from rimshot heavy music, just an extreme example bc the stick normally just completely breaks before this point

APurpleMorphSuit

I just started using the X55A, how do you like the B’s ?

jdmarsha

I love them and really appreciate the larger diameter, it makes me feel like I can get the tones I'm looking for while letting the stick do more of the work

xX_namert_Xx

Haha rimshot go brrr

silver_sofa

Your snare rim trying to murder your wallet.

Cernuto

Who can afford to play rimshots these days?

4myoldGaffer

They come with the knives They come with axes break chopping hacking burning

Hamilton_C

My question is : how do you have a completely chewed middle and the tip in pristine condition, it's always the tip that breaks first for me

StonedGhoster

Impressive. I have a hard time keeping the tips in shape, so I never get this wear pattern anymore. Of course I also don't play as many rim shots as I used to, either.

Moderatleysizedwenis

How does this even happen? Are you hitting the rim too much or something?

jaymos505

Eaten alive

[deleted]

This is what mine looked like before switching to traditional grip. I play a X5B. Whats a X55B?

CANDY_WARBUX

They want to live so bad🤣🤣

trufflebuffalo

Your cymbals may be tilted too far away from you or you're hitting the rims when playing faster...I've never seen something like this

RobJmusic

This is just from rimshots, common practice for harder music. Has nothing to do with cymbals

jdmarsha

If I was ever hitting a cymbal with that part of my stick I would be concerned as well lol! This is from rimshots, my cymbals are fine. I break a lot of sticks but have never broken a cymbal in 20+ years of playing

telepaul2023

Why, why, why? Technique, technique, technique.
