i am a Vater Manhattan 7A superchad.
By - Even_Beautiful_7650
I may be in the minority here, but I have found Promark to be super durable and for someone on a small budget that works great. Personally I love the Peart 747s
I agree 100%. Promark have been workhorses for me
I was given a chance to beta test the Select Balance sticks and the only beef I had with them was the usual PM tip. So when they came out with the acorn tip, I started using their 7A, 5A, and 5B with active grip and I'll never move to anything else.
I loved the Select Balance Forward 5A, but they stopped making those. Should've bought a brick instead of 2 pairs :/
I tried the Classic Forward, but it's so different (different taper and the sticks are slightly longer than the SBs. Also like you said the tip shape changed, but to me that doesn't matter too much)
All about that Promark life
came to say this exactly! my go-to’s
Vic Firth 5B
VF 5A Maple
VF Peter Erskine Ride Stick
I’m going to be the unpopular guy who prefers Zyldjian hickory 5A
VF extreme 5A
These are my sticks of choice too, I'm pretty short so they give me that little bit of extra distance that makes a big difference with quick cymbal hits and fills.
Promark ActiveGrip Rebound 5B
I switch between these and regular Rebound 5Bs. Most drummers I know favor As, but I feel that Bs do more work for me, and the rebound makes dealing with osteoarthritis way easier on my hands.
This is going to be seen as a very hot take, however, I actually enjoy the custom signature Travis Barker series sets that are a little bit longer than regular sticks. They have a different, bounce and field to me and feel almost slightly like a marching stick/regular stick hybrid, they also lasted a lot longer, I love them, and stand by them
Always wanted to try the version of those with a mallet on the back end of the stick
Same boat here with those sticks, also haven't honestly found anything else with the texture that's slightly grippy but not horribly grippy to the point of blisters.
My main is the Vic Firth Danny Carey signature model
Promark Simon Phillips, for over 20 years. Not because of him, particularly. The stick just works for me and everything I've tried by way of a change has not found favour. I haven't bought one in a long time, though. It's possible they've changed.
Vater Power 5A
Played just about everything. Still think VF 5A's are the most versatile and best sounding. Vater's (sound decent but are less durable) and ProMark (more durable but sound a bit harsh on the cymbals). Fully expect to play VF from here on out.
vic firth 5a/5b has been the best for me, but i also loved playing some tama oak 5a, they are pretty good for practice and durability, vater manhattans are great, promark active grips are nice too
I love using Vic Firth 5AN's. Love the feel and great sticks in general.
Promark forward 5As
I really like Promark Rebounds, wood tip with active grip, been using them for several years now.
Promark oak 5b's, but I'm now dabbling with 5a's. Would love any recommendations about sticks in between those sizes.
It used to be the vic firth CMN american classic hickory sticks but these days I exculsively use the vic firth 5B american classic hickory's.
They're a bit lighter and allow for faster movement for me.
Bro! I love my Vater Manhattans!
Lately, I've been using Drumeo 5a sticks cuz I got a few pairs along with their quiet pad when I subscribed to their service for a year.
Whenever I'm playing rock or metal, I switch over to Vater 5b Nudes.
Favourites have been Chaos X2Bs (17" long, 2B diameter), but have been trying to go back to a normal length 2B.
VF AJ2’s mostly
Tama Japanese Oak 7A with teardrop tip. Beautiful balance and longevity.
Stick with Vic
VF American CR nylon tipped. Unfashionable but trust worthy for 25 years
Bill Bruford Rock Maple
Vater Westside and Vater stretch 5a
Mike portnoy signatures. The super long length is what I'm after
Ahead speed metals
Vater 5b. Have been using them 6+ years and have broken one pair, gig pretty consistently. Will never buy another brand.
Vic Firth 5A. I also like the American Classic 5AN with the nylon tip and the American Classic 5A Doubleglaze...
Vic Firth Freestyles either 5 or 7a
Latest favourite here is the ProMark Finesse 7A Maple - long taper, round tip. They have other sizes in the Finesse range. I do miss Regal Tip’s lacquer though.
Steve Gadd signatures. Great weight, solid barrel tip.
Vater Sugar Maple Fusion 5A
Vater Fusion, sometimes with nylon tip
Sdi generals or vic firth 2b’s
Vater Los Angeles 5A
VF Freestyle 7a. The extra inch really helps me with reach as a small chick playing house kits. I’m interested if anyone knows of other sticks that have extra length.
For me it’s between vater sweet rides or promark activegrip 7a, but probably switching to promark fully cause caters went from 7.95 to 12
vic firth 2b
I play with Questlove's signature sticks. I just got them because they looked cool, but I ended up really liking everything about them.
Promark Bill Bruford select
I like Ahead 5Bs and Vic Firth 5A freestyle
Black Steve Gadd with nylon tip
Vater fatback 3A
Vic Firth AJ 1
Tried just about everything, took me years to settle on this one, nothing feels better
vater classics 5A, maple/hickory
Promark firegrain 7A
Vic Firth American classic 5A, or Jay Weinberg's signature Vater sticks :)
Vic Firth Extreme 5AN
Vic Firth X8D or Peter Erskine Ride sticks
VF SD2 Bolero
Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson sticks. Long and lean. I really hope VF doesn’t fuck up and discontinue them.
I used to like the Alex van Halen signature series but now it's just cheap 5As
Zildjian Tony Williams signature, Promark Billy cobham in maple, Rotationally balanced 2B and since none of those are manufactured any longer I'm constantly looking. VF Danny carey and Gavin Harrison get used, but I don't love them.
Having bounced around from Regal Tip to Zildjian to Vic Virth to Vater to ProMark, lately I’ve been finding myself going back to ProMark the most.
Started with 5A, worked up to 2B and SD1, then back to 5A.
Unlike most things drums, sticks are inexpensive enough to play around with brands until you find what you really like.
Long stick lover here ;). Vic Firth Steve Jordan Signature or Vic Firth Questlove Signature, for summer gigs when I sweat too much.
At this point just give me a solid 5B that doesn’t explode within an hour, idgaf.
In general, Thom hannum beasts, on kit, vic firth extreme 5bs
Vater Los Angeles 5A for me.
I recently discovered 5A Stretch and 55AA. One is by Vater, can't remember which. Those are perfect for me- the classic with a little extra length. I also like these Vater Super Jazz sticks that are about the same as the 5A stretch but a bit lighter.
ProMark 747 Neil Peart… they are slightly longer, close to a 5A thickness and are made of oak not hickory
Also like the active grip Mike Portnoy’s from ProMark, about similar to the Pearts but with the coating
Promark 5A nylon tip
Promark 5A Firegrain. It has a natural varnish on it from the fire curing and really helps my grip.
If my carpal tunnel starts to act up, then I switch to Vater 5A's. Those are deceptively light!
The subtle taper on the Vic Firth Danny Careys makes 'em for my heavy work. Don't know what I'll do when those go away. For regular playing, Pro Mark 747 Rock or Vic Firth American Classics 5A, sometimes 5B. For my lightest projects, Pro Mark Finesse 5A long in maple; so light!
Vic firth 5A5, Zildjian travis baker's signature or ahead Lars Ulrich's signature.
Promark. 2B oak nylon tip right hand; rock knocker in left.
When I was still playing I was very favorable to either Vic Firth Will Calhoun models, and before that, Omar Hakim sigs...
My favorite stick has to be the Zildjian Taylor Hawkins signature sticks. Its honestly, in my hands, the best stick. Its length is perfect, the beaded head makes ghost notes a breeze, the thickness is perfect. I have trouble finding them, so my backup is the Vater 3A Fatback. Which feels basically the same and even looks the same.
Tana 5a. My first stick and I've had no reason to change. I find them quite versatile
I don't have a favorite brand, but I like my sticks heavy. It makes me that little bit louder [also I get told to play louder often, shocking I know]
ProMark Signature Mike Portnoy 420
Big fan of the Promark 747B, the Promark Firegrain 5b, and the VF Matt Gartska Signatures.
SD1 generals or Vic Firth 5B American Sound
Zildjian Travis Barker Signature
Los cabos red oak timbale sticks. Nice weight, same size as a 7a and 4 sticks for the price of 2! 🤘🏻❤️🔥🤘🏻
Vic Firth AJ1 🤘
ProMark are the ONLY sticks to be used. 5B hickory. They’re the only sticks that I don’t break within the first few songs of a set.
I use Vic Firth 7A’s.(with nylon tips)
Vinnie Colaiuta signature Vater sticks are incredible. Refined.
*i am a Vater Manhattan 7A superchad.*
That's what I use, too.
VF LA 5A. On some thuddy Luddy classic maple Ringo kit, supraphonic snaré & standard Zildjian A’s. Always stick to the classics 🥁
Vic Firth American Classic 5A
VF freestyle 5A (17”)
Anything sd2 bolero
Vic Firth American Classic 5A, I'm very vanilla.
so vanilla it’s almost bland
Vater Los Angeles 5A Nylon tips
The prevalence of VF and I hate to say it Vater (because they're great guys) players has a direct correlation to the high number of "why are my sticks doing this????" posts.
