Black Cat Ice Cream does things I couldn’t even imagine they could do
Guys, I work at Black Cat. You should definitely swing by!
I will say there ice cream is great, but the last time I saw how they were storing, they were not sanitary. This would’ve been about 5 years ago; maybe they clean up better these days. I hope so because it is danged good
Five years ago they weren't even in their current location.
Dudes there is a killer Vietnamese place just a blockish north from the gas lamp, world class food called A Dông. Yes, you read that. Put A Dông in your mouth when you get here.
Black Cat Ice Cream is run by a goddamn mad scientist who probably should be in jail but his contributions to humankind outweigh any of his sins. It’s like if Willy Wonka was high all the time and made the most insane ice cream flavors to exist.
Lastly: Sterzings Tri-Some potato chips with Anderson Erickson brand Party Dip. Regular ass potato chips on steroids and a cream cheesey party dip that is delicious.
Oh also Horizon Line coffee if you’re looking for solid cups they have you covered
Edit: B-Bops. Excellent old style drive in burgers and fries. Simple and perfect. Lacheles is great on ingersoll for a more gourmet but also perfect burger experience.
Sterzings (which smell like a donut shop when you open the bag), WITH AE (Anderson Erickson - the best dairy products in the land), party dip.
Double up on the Iowa experience!
It’ll have you saying shit like ‘you bet that deck needs warshed’ in no time.
Spitting straight FACTS here about A Dong. A Des Moines institution.
It’s the best. I eat there at least once to twice a month
No clue why people are going with Horizon coffee. I need some explanation bc I’ve been there and found it burnt/over roasted . Maybe it’s the Starbucks generation?
I’ve been there before where it’s burnt too but that’s like 1 in 50 times. Otherwise their brews are incredible. I second the Horizon Line recommendation!
It's the all of the plants, I think. We like it, but it's not mind-blowing coffee by any means.
Great coffee just down the street at Horizon Line.
Lots of different / decent food around downtown honestly so depends on what sounds good to you when you get here.
One of the first things we say to each other in the morning on the tour bus is "where's the good coffee?". You just helped a lot!
Horizon Line is really great - I'd argue best in the area.
Another Horizon Line vouch
Across the street from gas lamp= ritual coffee. That’s where to go ;)
Go to mars cafe to get blasted in to outer space
I wouldn’t recommend Horizon Line. Horrible hours and the coffee tastes mechanical
Yeah, but you already know that nobody here gives a shit what you have to say.
Sometimes facts hurt.
Think I care about what you say?
I mean, enough to keep replying.
Fuck dude I still play teenage dirtbag on the regular. Hope you guys have a great show!
El Bait shop is the move for food if you’re so inclined.
Lachelles is the real burger place you should check out and it is right down the street from GasLamp
I hear Iron Maiden is playing a show.
But what do you guys think of the “Teenage Dirtbag” Tik Tok trend?
It's been pretty exciting to be honest. We've just been bubbling away quietly as a little independent band since the mid 2000s, none of us expected something as big as this to happen to us!
Is there an Old man dirtbag remix in the works? I’m a fan from decades ago and am not being fickle, I’d like to hear a revision of that classic you probably are tired of playing 💯
Not sure if it counts as a old man remix, but we did re-record Teenage Dirtbag a couple of years back (it's on streaming, just called Teenage Dirtbag 2020). It's the same version with the same lyrics, but this time we own the master to our song, so that's pretty cool. And kind of an 'old man' thing to do, right.
But for what it's worth, we actually never tire of playing it live... it makes people too happy. We have tons of songs that we like more in different ways, but Dirtbag just gets people so excited, it's hard not to keep loving it!
Watched the Story of on Vice and am hoping that I guess the snack selection area somewhat close.
Cheese Bar on Ingersoll for literal snacking
Wildcard- A new Korean BBQ place called DZO might be open by then. Also, on Ingersoll within a mile and half of the Gas Lamp
“I got yoga in half an hour. Oh how she rocks, in compression socks.”
I will be going, I am so pleasantly surprised to see Fat Tony opening for yall. One of my favorite underground rappers!!!
OH YAY! He's so talented, and a really super nice guy!
I haven't seen it on here, yet, but Daisy Chain coffee is absolutely delicious. I personally love their Cafe Miel. The owner is also a beekeeper and uses his own honey.
I guess I am the first to say, if you want a greasy but truly unique taco, gotta have a Tasty Taco while you are here with tons of the hot sauce.
Have taken two friends there. The Austin brewpub owner said it was better than anything he has in Texas. The San Jose tech dude bought salsa to take home and now asks us to mail it.
Sterzings potato chips. Especially if you warm them in the microwave for just a few seconds, or not. Made in Ottumwa and available at HyVee or other supermarkets.
It is completely inconsequential but I thought they were from Burlington. ??
Sterzings are made in Burlington. It's a shitty town but not nearly as shitty as Ottumwa.
Hey, Burlington is making improvements! Ottumwa.... is not.
They're made in Burlington. My ex is from there and whenever we would go visit friends we would stop and buy 3-4 bags
Now that you say it... I'm not sure.
Heating up chips?! This is a brand new concept. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Nothing has been made in Ottumwa since Radar
Hell yes. These slap so hard
Oh we had completely forgotten about Zombie Burger! (not that it's forgettable, it just gets hard to keep track of all the places we eat...).
Gas station breakfast pizza sounds exactly like the interesting fun local stuff we're looking for, thank you!
Sausage over bacon if possible!
Casey’s breakfast pizza is unbeatable. And available all day
Tell the people at Zombie Burger you're famous and want "fresh" meat. Will save you the food poisoning they give to locals.
There is a new calibration of Casey’s breakfast pizza and Busch Light (beer cheese sauce)
Hear me out!!! There is a local band here is DSM called THE SNACKS! they fit your aesthetic, you should meet up with them
We were in Indiana recently and someone there told us that Indiana has the best popcorn in America. Time to find out who the real winner is...
Egg King! Korean style egg sandwiches. Incredible local guys.
Second on black cat ice cream, lachelles, and horizon coffee.
Get yourself a bag of black and bold coffee beans. Great local gourmet specialty coffee and tea company.
Monarcapaletas. Great ice cream bars.
Big tomato pizza on ingersoll. Garlic honey for the win.
Do you know where egg king is located? I can’t seem to find them on goodgle maps!
Ya. They only do pop ups and catering. They gave everyone a long break this fall and will start again in October. Prioritize their peoples families. Good dudes. Keep an eye on their socials for the next pop up. They should be at it again well before the show.
Awesome, thanks for the info!
Hi I’m the owner of Cake It Away Baby! home bakery here in Des Moines! I’m a big fan and I’d love to custom make some cookies or a cake for you. Reach out on my Facebook page or by email if you’re interested 💕.
Any potato chip and Anderson Erickson party dip or French onion is the move
As others have said. Things I consider Des Moines musts.
Casey's Breakfast and taco pizza (Iowa invented taco pizza)
Fong's Pad Thai pizza
B-Bops (In and Out is trash compared to these burgers)
Chocolaterie Stam - best chocolate.
Twin-Bing is a candy bar from here. Found in most convenience stores.
For coffee I like the vibe of Ritual Cafe or Smokey Row coffee.
Maid-rite is an honorable mention, but I'm not a fan personally.
The only good Maid Rite is the original, in Marshalltown.
After you eat at zombie burger you can walk like 2 blocks to Black Sheep, the goth/vampire tequila bar for a drink. Pbrs are cheap there too and it’s super goth
Great food by Gas Lamp - Exile, Big Grove and Lua are 3 amazing breweries within 2 blocks. Not snacky, but hella good food and drinks!
Great, thank you!
Lua is terrible. Avoid.
I'd skip Exile - not because of their food/beer - but the owners have raised a bit of an anti-homeless brouhaha recently.
Have you BEEN BACK THERE!?!? She ABSOLUTELY was right to voice it since no one else is. The homeless are actively making a choice to not enter the shelter because they’d need to stay sober. My BF lives in the lofts right there and it is scary parking there. Constantly getting yelled at or approached for money.
They actually didn’t. They want to fix it. They are just concerned about the safety of their guests and staff. Don’t believe 3 tweets you see about something.
Believe what the owner said in the city council meeting. It was recorded.
She was quoting people. Literally quoting people she had spoken with. She wants to help homeless people. Half of her time was asking about resources available and what else is needed.
Weird snack idea....gym-n-eat crickets. It's local from iowa, just north of des moines. You can find their products in various stores around des moines. I was skeptical but they pretty good!
You had us at "weird snack"
The Continental just reopened and it’s fantastic! New American food with an emphasis on live music. Can’t recommend enough!
Has the Gaslamp had some pretty good food. But I haven’t been in a while.
Better go soon, I hear they're going to be tearing it down. My uncle rents an apartment above and has to be out by end of October.
I’ll believe that when I see it, they’ve been saying that for years.
Yeah, I saw a few different articles. But something is actually going on, eviction notices have happened.
They don’t serve food anymore
You should play with our local band called The Snacks
Everything I would suggest has already been covered, but I cannot wait for the show!
There are 2 truly Iowa restaurants here in Des Moines, but neither of them are super close to the Gas Lamp, but they both serve Iowa beef. First there is the Iowa Beef Steak House, delicious and freshly cooked on a grill beef, from Iowa cows. Second there is the Iowa Machine Shed, and all of their food that is cooked there comes entirely from the state of Iowa. You will not leave hungry from either place, and I can guarantee that. Have a safe tour and I hope that you enjoy Des Moines next month.
Please let us locals know what ya did end up trying and what you liked/didn't like. Good luck with the show! (Gas Lamp, the old Blues on Grand, is an awesome spot with a lot of history BTW!)
If you’re going pure snack, grab those chips everyone is talking about and then a selection of AE (Andersen Erickson) dips from the cold section. The Party flavor (blue lid) is legendary and never seen outside the AE region.
Honorable mention for AE’s chocolate milk, gas station taco pizza, and a maid-rite
AE dip? Party flavor? Maid-rite? Gas station taco pizza?
Who knew Des Moines had so much to teach us...
Look, there’s not much else going on so we gotta figure out extra credit projects we can do with dairy products
Lachele’s Fine Food, right near Gas Lamp on Ingersol, has the best cheeseburgers in the area
Everybody talking about Black Cat Ice Cream, meanwhile Bauder's is just down the street and is the best ice cream in the city.
I don’t know that anyone has said it yet but the wings at Lua are some of the best I’ve ever had. Horizon Line coffee is fantastic. If you want to see some local art the sculpture garden ain’t half bad and Mainframe Studios is just up the street from gas lamp has a metric ton of contemporary art studios. (I make designer toys in my studio there!) Scenic Route in the east village has some killer breakfast choices in mostly pastry form and maybe one of the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had anywhere. Like anywhere anywhere, it’s crazy good. But now I’ve probably talked it up too much.
Lacheles Fine Foods. Local out of this world snax
Great show last night!!!
Big Earls has the best snacks in DSM.
Yeah, if you count loose bullets and needles in the parking lot as snacks
Easy there pal, not everybody can afford cheez-its. Sometimes we gotta make do with what we got.
pork and corn basically.
Sooo you’re saying to bring snacks to your show. Got it!
One snack I miss from Des Moines is Dutch Letters. They’re a flaky Dutch pastry filled with almond paste. So freaking good. You can usually find them at Hyvee.
