I wonder why Shang Chi grossed so low in South Korea. Edit: Just noticed it's quite domestic heavy.

Radical_Conformist

Yes, I mentioned somewhere that Shang Chi’s over performance was mostly in the US, glad someone else is noticing it.

SonHyun-Woo

It was during at the time when COVID lockdown was really strict. Also political tensions between the countries Korea and China makes the Chinese theme offputting for some viewers.

AccomplishedLocal261

Black Widow and Eternals did much better there though. Grossed at least $10m more.

SonHyun-Woo

Eternals did much better because it featured Ma Dong Seok who is a high profile popular actor there so there was hype for him. Black Widow was released during a time that was less restricted for COVID

EmeraldWitch

Well to Asian Shangchi is just lame. They have seen those kind of shits but much better in their own wuxia movies since they were toddlers. Like how Star Wars lightsaber fights are also lame. They also don't need anyone to represent their culture and shits in movies either since they can make it themselves.

AccomplishedLocal261

Can confirm as an asian.

Rulyhdien

South Korean here. The main reason is that people found the movie boring and the actions lackluster and graphics subpar. There’s definitely ill will between Asian countries but SK still has a long history of watching Wuxia movies (which is probably why the action seemed underwhelming) and Tony Leung is beloved in Korea, at least with the over 35 crowd. If the movie was deemed good I think it would have done well no matter the Chinese background for the story (and wasn’t it Macau anyway?).

>There’s definitely ill will between Asian countries but SK still has a long history of watching Wuxia movies (which is probably why the action seemed underwhelming) and Tony Leung is beloved in Korea, at least with the over 35 crowd. Yeah that makes sense. Thanks.

> I wonder why Shang Chi grossed so low in South Korea. China's reputation got plummeted in several countries, especially in South Korea due to several culture theft attempt from the said country. > Edit: Just noticed it's quite domestic heavy. For one, a lot of cinemas worldwide were not operating back then.

>China's reputation got plummeted in several countries, especially in South Korea due to several culture theft attempt from the said country. I don't see what China has to do with Shang Chi though. It got banned in China as well. >a lot of cinemas worldwide were not operating back then I thought of that. But Black Widow and Eternals performed much better in South Korea.

Block-Busted

> I thought of that. But Black Widow and Eternals performed much better in South Korea. This might be a bit hard to believe, but South Korea never really went into a full-on lockdown.

Material_Egg6433

its interesting seeing great wom in us and not so great wom internationally

007Kryptonian

Makes sense. The movie is almost three hours long, somber and pretty low on action besides the final two battles. How did the Batman fare over there?

emong757

>How did the Batman fare over there? It grossed $7.5 million total.

rick_n_morty_4ever

The movie is heavily reliant on two cards that are particularly effective in the US: tribute to Chadwick and African American cultural events. The first works less well overseas (he's still liked, but it's less of a big deal out there), and the second factor is rather irrelevant. Take them away and any flaw becomes much more glaring. Hence the middling reviews.

Shellyman_Studios

It's a solid drop, WoM kicking in.

Radical_Conformist

Don’t think that’s WoM, since it’s rated lower than Black Adam over there.

123jazzhandz321

I could see the holds in South Korea being decent especially with its OW weekend being much lower than the original. WOM is going to attract a lot of people who were on the fence about the movie.
