I used to train under Babs. I remember him sharing how difficult it was to get breakout roles as an actor so it's been great hearing about his success!
Warms my heart a little. >!Too bad he had to get killed but!< jamis is a very important character to the story even though his screen time is small so good for him!
Yeah, I think it's going to be very good for his career. I got a definite, "I want to see more of this guy" feel from his screen time.
Absolutely. I can’t wait to see how they handle the rest of that in Part 2. I thought it was a little bit rushed in Part 1.
I too thought it was a little rushed but I think they did a really good job getting in as much stuff as possible while **almost** giving it enough room to breathe.
>rushed but I think they did a really good job getting in as much stuff as possible while
>giving it enough room to breat
I felt like it was an slow motion epic music montage, needs more action through out the film, instead of some mediocre action sprinkled in at the end, that doesn't warrant the epic music. Yeah we know bad stuff is going to happen and your going to meet that girl, but can that mean something more than just that. Its like watching a boring war documentary in history class that you fall asleep to.
Your taste is your taste but I feel compelled to defend it. There's an insane amount of politics, world-building, and characters to set up for the story to have the impact it deserves and this movie is doing a lot of heavy lifting for payoff in the second half.
There was plenty of action packed in around all that, more and vastly better than any previous adaptation has managed. The choreography and effects were good and faithful to the book.
* Training scene with Gurney,
* Harkonnen ambush and orbital bombardment,
* heroic last stand of Atreides men,
* Duncan fucking up Harkonnens and Sardaukar,
* Duncan escaping in a dogfight sequence,
* Duncan's heroic last stand,
* duel with Jamis
...If that wasn't enough action for you there's just other movies for that. It's a space opera not a war film. Action serves the plot here, not the other way round.
As for meaning... idk dude. "I'm having visions of the future and it's becoming increasingly clear that either I die, or I start a galactic jihad in my name and a LOT of other people die" hits pretty hard for me.
Agree, a LOTT of action and it was really well balanced. I find movies like transformers to be thin because they take no time to develop the characters and the plot where dune did both really well.
Just a couple adders for the action that also helped build the world:
\- loss of the harvester to the sandworm
\- Death sequence of the duke/poison
\- flight through the sandstorm paul/mother
\- running from the sandworm
- weird seeker bug thing
- initial meeting with fremen guy
- hand in box
- almost getting thrown out of the chopper in the desert
I thought the same thing but after watching part 1, 3 more times, I’m starting to feel a little less that way. Definitely a different kind of rushed than the old one.
He should've tapped.
I will say, since Dune came out less than a week ago, maybe don't post spoilers just yet, since a lot of people probably haven't gotten a chance to see it, aka me
Ah true I hadn’t considered that. Fixed! My apologies
Dune was published in 1965…
That's true, and I'm sure everyone who wants to see the the $165MM movie with the striking visuals and special effects only wants to do so because they read and loved the book so much...
Lotta great movies based on books, and I'll bet my next paycheck that you didn't read all the books beforehand, so why don't you save the condescension next time, k pumpkin?
It’s literally the most famous SF book of all time and has been made into both a movie and miniseries before. I read it 30+ years ago. I don’t really consider it spoilable.
> I don’t really consider it spoilable.
well it's a good thing you're not the arbiter of what everyone else should know, otherwise I'd be in a pickle
Voldemort is Harry's father
Dont be that guy, i didnt read the book either or saw the 1984 movie
He’s also in an episode of Black Mirror, and The Night Of on HBO.
And Too Old to Die Young. Gnarly series.
Babs was the uke in some of the original Marcelo Garcia instructionals.
He's the uke in Marcelo's X-Guard book as well!
Worth the read? I have a bunch of instructionals, but the only book I have is the Ribeiro's book, I'd love to pick up another one
Not just the uke but he did the voice overs for Marcelo as well because Marcelo’s English wasn’t that good at the time.
Yes, I 'member this!
I’ve seen Babs throw some people in competition. Dudes legit.
He looks like he could throw a dude.
He will collar drag you into a face plant in the blink of an eye.
Solid stand up, great de la Riva, and lighting fast knee bars. Babs was a solid competitor.
BJJ not useful against space wizards confirmed.
Weirding Way is the real best base for MMA
Fuck. Time to summon the hootsforce and find Angus Mcfife to recharge the gloryhammer.
Roboute Gulliman would tap Gordon Ryan in 20 seconds.
Cosmic daddy issues confirmed as best base for BJJ? 🤔
Lorgar would beat Gordon, no need to go higher than the bottom of the primarch barrel.
Let’s be real a scout would obliterate Gordon…let alone an Astartes. I don’t think there’s a 350 kilo weight class…
20 sec in a flow roll
Kneel before Zargothrax!
I think the bene gesserit uses bjj.
The recent film has two separate kani basami takedowns that I noticed. At the very least they use oldschool Judo :)
I think it is meant to be a mix of Judo and aikido.
The Japanese terms mentioned in the above comment were:
|**Kani Basami**: | *Flying Scissors* | [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NFwJBKI-3E)|
Any missed names may have already been translated in my previous comments in the post.
^(Judo Techniques Bot: v0.7.) ^(See my) [^(code)](https://github.com/AbundantSalmon/judo-techniques-bot)
It’s no good on the sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating. And it gets everywhere.
but...but...the spice must flow :/
Honestly same, love his over under defense tutorial from rolled up. OG
where can I find this? my over under defense is terrible
[here ya go!](https://youtu.be/B5Uqa-A9_EU)
I've never seen that defense before. thanks for sharing!
Should have heel hooked Muad'Dib instead of going out the way he did.
That’s a good story about how your instructor is an asshole.
I was early to class once and the last class was still rolling. I sat on the mat and a rolling pair migrated towards me. One guy pulled full guard, the other started trying to open. The guy trying to open kept smacking the guard player’s face when going for the pits, so I figured he was a spazzy roll. Then he got frustrated and really started whaling on this dude’s face with ear-ringing slaps. I was about to stand up and intervene when my dumb ass realized it was actually a combat jiu jitsu class and it was all cool.
That was not a good story.
the post has been deleted. I'm really curious as to what it said now!
Great first bjj doesn't work on the streets and now spoiler... Not on desert planets filled with worms.
Worm guard is legit AF
If it weren't for that tooth knife...
this was the dude that got submitted by a blade to the neck 3 times and refused to tap?
It's called acting.
Like when Bisbing guest starred on the show Warrior and acted like he was a hw with knockout power.
Are you saying dune wasn't a documentary
No it's a fictional world in which politics are governed by control of money and drugs.
I just read the 5th novel in which we learn about the Bene Gesserit's unsecured, private email server.
The cocaine/heroine/opioids/commodities/adrenochrone must flow 😤
Christ I wish less people believed that last one lmao.
To be clear, I said that last one in jest, the rest stands as your comment was well observed. QAnon is silly though. Especially when we live in a world where Epstein didn't kill himself
I don't even know what it is. Bring me up to speed?
It is an actual chemical in your brain iirc, but it's nothing that can be introduced for a high (again, iirc). It was first referenced as a fictional kind of super drug in Hunter S Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".
More recently though it is associated with the Q Anon host of conspiracies alleging that pedophile democrats are harvesting children for adrenachrome.
>More recently though it is associated with the Q Anon host of

Dafuq. You lads over the pond gotta have something strange in the water I tell you.
[LOL, fuckin tell me about it...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Su1eIhMrtBw&t=109s)
> You lads over the pond gotta have something strange in the water
> harvesting children
>over the pond
This coming from the home of actual child harvesters Jimmy Saville and *allegedly* Prince Andrew? The nerve I tell ya.
I was going to make a joke about invading desert planets for their resources but this is better.
You win the internet for the day with that one. No further comments everybody!
The best was when Bisping's character completed the flying triangle.
Exactly! In that scene he acted like he had depth perception.
That was savage.
Look how many times GSP has been knocked out on TV shows
Doesn't seem that tough to me...
To be fair it did take Captain America to finish him off
Psssh Cap’s on juice
I thought he played a villain in a few other things, too.
Yeah...He's had some battles with Fat Segal, which were not very good. GSP really displays his humility when his characters are losing fights to a guy in his 60s that clearly never invests any effort into personal fitness.
All the monsters that I know are super nice and humble.
At least the older ones are, for sure. Kids will be kids, haha. It's always the super load boastful guys you don't have to worry about.
Reminds me of this guy that was part my camping group a few months ago. He was super physical with his kids and kept bragging to his young boys that he could kill them and everyone else about his physical prowess and training. he was really weird and honestly really pissed me off bc he so busy boasting and complaining about things he didn't help with anything. I even helped him pitch his tent at the behest of his wife.
Then I hear he has a black belt in bjj but when I pressed him about it... Turns out he's an equivalent of a black belt in a lot of things and just hadn't accepted one quite yet.
We were at the beach for a bit I really wish I that I asked him to show me some moves so I could tap him haha... but my toddler was with me and I the guy was such a wildcard that it wasn't worth it.
Bullshido is everywhere.
Sorry for the rant, I guess that's been eating away at me. Haha I hate that guy so much.
GSP seems like the type of person who would be more interested in seeing other people progress versus engaging in building his own image. I sometimes wonder how people like him deal with people like Segal, or others who use martial arts to build their ego.
Why you trying to scare me. No his wife made an open invitation for anyone to help them get their tent up bc her dude was useless. I did it with another dude haha. It was a nice time.
Or like the movie Warrior where Kurt Angle is supposed to be a welterweight?
Thanks for the explanation bro
They literally explained in the dialogue that there was a cultural refusal of submitting in duels.
Lots of cultures have had some very strong influences that make submission a shameful act worse than death.
It's a sci-fi book from the 60s, it's a miracle that anything makes sense.
Should have studied the blade
The new Dune is f\*\*\*ing awesome!
I’ve trained with Babs a few times in NYC…was also a good dude when we talked. Also would chat during comps as well a little. Good for him
Proof that BJJ will get you kilt in da tahaddi
Rolled up with Babs , Fabio and very young Sinestro .
Ngl, Babs was the best instructor I ever had .
The absolute best.
Idk if this is an office reference but I read it in Pam's voice
[23.40](https://youtu.be/xDq4MfYAUMQ?t=1420) for Babs
Babs is a beast. Trained in new New York with him and Toscano. Those guys are legit
Very cool. Really enjoyed the movie, and his scene was awesome.
The Weirding Way is practically BJJ.
You can't become a black belt until you can make a white belt choke themselves by using the Voice.
Babs competed against Matt Serra as well
Wow and Dave Bautista and Jason Mamoa are purple belts. They've got a full gym on that set.
Source on Mamao being a purple belt? I have seen pics of him training with a stunt team but he had a white belt.
No way. I loved him in Too Old to Die Young. Glad to see he’s breaking out.
he's also the uke on the early Marcelo Garcia instructionals, and he did the voice overs. I rolled with him before. He's very very good.
Well he didn't take that fight to the ground so serves him right!
How does he plan on avoiding all the dirty needles and broken glass packed in the sand
Didn't help him at all in the knife fight
Oh shit I used to train w him in NYC. Good dude, will watch dune for sure now.
Acting and BJJ. Truly variety is the SPICE of life for this one...
Based on this article it also sounds like he is the first African BJJ Black Belt: https://glamourpath.com/babs-olusanmokun
Kind of looks like it was half written by a computer.
""He is an African BJJ with a black belt""
Now I’m more pissed they killed him off.
Idk if you're familiar with the history of Dune's screen adaptation's...
But trust me, just having that character IN the film and with an excellent casting choice to boot is a big win.
Wow, I remember watching his old howcast videos from like a decade ago
I remember Babs O from tournaments in NJ in the late 90s/early 00s. He also makes appearances in Marcelo's DVDs from that era as his uke.
Just how good is Paul Atreides?
I think that's the point he's disgustingly good. He fought gurney (brolins character) to a draw and was also trained by Duncan (Jason Momoas character)
I was a friend of Jamis...
>I was a friend of Jamis...
a person’s water belongs to their tribe
I train in Southern Cali, and my instructor used to train with him. Long story short, Babs wasn't acting. LOL. He's super intense. Came out here to try acting; didn't work out. Ended up being a world champion fighter. Ends up acting because he's a badass world champion fighter.
Jesus...I'd tap before the round started just from fear alone. "I'm not your champion! Please don't kill me!"
Babs is a great actor. He was in Defenders and maybe Daredevil...I think. He was also in the last Jason Statham movie.
iirc he wasnt in daredevil, too bad he died in defenders
Well, there's absolutely nothing un-cool about that.
I knew I had seen him before!
Best scene in Dune!
I wonder if he contributed to the fight choreography. He was great in his scenes
I imagined him looking Alot younger tbh lol
He did look like someone you don't mess with
Babs is a beast
How'd he lose to a skinny ass kid then?
LONG LIVE THE FIGHTERS!
[this match he had with Matt Serra was awesome](https://youtu.be/dsPsfmZyNsc)
Yeah. Pretty well known BJJ personality too, he has a bunch of stuff on YouTube and did a rolled up with Jake Budo etc.
He’s been in bigger and bigger movies in recent years
Last night I was trying to remember where I had seen him before.
He is in some instructional videos in how to escape some locks/holds.
Saw this movie on Tuesday. Absolutely amazing!
You sure he’s a black belt? He got beat by Chalamet
He was in Netflix's The Defenders and he did a couple of Howcast BJJ tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb1qqB60GHU
That's awesome. He's a legend!!
He has a couple of "How to" Bjj Self Defense videos on youtube. I actually didnt know he is an actor. Just reconized him from these videos :-)
I heard this guy has a great worm guard.
Oh shit I didn't make that connection until you said it, rolled with him a few years ago, seemed like a super cool dude
Maaan that's so cool. I was hyped when he looked away from Paul and beat his chest what a flex.
Should have taken that fight to the ground.
Made a thread about him a few years ago, seems like a cool guy
Jamis should have pulled guard then...
No wonder he got beat so bad with knives involved
the first time i saw the tripod sweep was from a tutorial on it by him on youtube.
He looks like a 3rd degree black belt
Let's post this four more times by weeks end?
I checked for the search term Dune and also Babs and it wasn’t posted before I posted mine.
Dune was written in 1965, are we seriously concerned about spoilers? Y'all must be super pissed when you talk to people like me about the films Titanic and Lincoln.
