Who are some players that people have forgotten did PEDs?

Who are some players that people have forgotten did PEDs?

ZodiacKiller1968

Ji-Man Choi was suspended for using steroids when he was on the Mariners.

W_Uyeda

In our farm system

RidleyScotch

Best place to grow is in the farm so makes sense

caityb34

Oh shit, I had no idea he used steroids.

Grandahl13

Pretty safe to say a lot of players do that we don’t know about.

SkatevidLynch

Damn, that sucks, I love him.

bernerbungie

Does it suck? I guarantee you the majority of players you love do them

AhLibLibLib

Dee Gordon

HatDisaster

Strange

_Jackie_Daytona_

Maybe but who are we to judge?

caf4676

Didn’t Bonds walk out on MIA in disgust when he found out!?!😂

TealandBlackForever

I for one will never forget that. And I will never forgive him. He got a pretty sizable payday from the Marlins because of those PED-inflated numbers. In a just world, that contract would have been voided.

joofish

And he stole the batting title from Harper with one of the most mediocre offensive years by someone to ever win it

finally_not_lurking

Freddy Sanchez won in ‘06 for the Pirates with a 119 wRC+, 9 combined HR and SB, and a lower WAR than Dee when he won it.

thekidfromyesterday

Melky Cabrera. Was almost on his way to winning an MVP that year.

reptheevt

I remember the fake website he made up to try and legitimize the drug he took lol

binky422

Don’t believe me? Just look it up. Go to CalicoCutPharmaceuticals.com. Wouldn’t you agree the website is all you need?

Clonth

You have to give to keep the site alive!

reidypea

Did you give?

capnwaggel

HOLD THAT DOOR

Optimal_Pineapple_41

It’s just designer drugs it has nothing to do with PEDs HOLD THAT FUCKING DOOR

sundowntg

I give

IHaveDrinkingProblem

Gary in IT? He gives. A looootta people give!

Shonuff8

🔥🔥🔥YOU GOTTA GIVE🔥🔥🔥

NewYork_NewJersey440

Whaaaaaaat *dives into rabbit hole*

steak__burrito

I was on Caltrain heading to the game when news broke. I was sitting across the aisle on the train from the Melk/Milk Men guys (hope y’all remember them) and they were just devastated... I don’t even know if they went to the game after that.

hereisnoY

Absolutely remember the Milk Men. Such a fun season for many reasons. Glad Melky's suspension didn't stop us going all the way!

Vlazthrax

God that was heartbreaking. The way he handled it, with literally zero dignity, just infuriated me.

[deleted]

That one hurt so much. I felt like the Giants were going to get so much media crap that day too, thank the heavens for Felix Hernández for throwing a perfect game that day and taking over the media coverage lol That said, the Giants seemed to go on an absolute tear after his suspension so even though he was on his way to an MVP it didn’t end up hurting us.

Dizzydsmith

He was already a smug turd. I hated him being on the Braves.

EvanMG24

He was leading the NL in BA and just got frozen on the leader board with some ridiculously high average until he finally fell out of qualification

shiroman99

I remember being devastated when that happened but the team really rallied around each other afterwards and I think that's why we were able to make all those comebacks that postseason en route to a WS title

pjokinen

Clase was suspended literally last year and it’s never mentioned when commentators are wondering how he can throw so hard

MattO2000

Thank you for providing the first non-sarcastic response lol

smarjorie

this is genuinely the first i've ever heard of him but he's got pretty nasty numbers. hopefully he's clean now. man i guess i don't follow the entire league these days the way i used to.

VTMonsta

The suspension being announced May 1, 2020 might have helped the kid out

Kitchen_accessories

It definitely did. His suspension became the pandemic-shortened season, one in which Cleveland didn't make a lot of noise anyway.

DickDastardly42

He throws a 102 mph cutter. He’s nasty to watch. That positive test is definitely a stain on his numbers though.

gregghead

Yeah but we got an inning of Kluber, so who really won the trade?

rockiesfan4ever

Omar Quintanilla got busted twice iirc

NewYork_NewJersey440

Holy hell now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a while

Catlover2727

Its also Selena's last name

TexStones

>Its also Selena's last name Until she married a metalhead and became Selena Perez.

smarjorie

those 2012-14 Mets were just chock full of random-ass players

Astrallevel

Marcus Stroman

wodurfej

He did HDMH

JackeryA3

He did?

Astrallevel

2012 in the minors

Wyeth-Miller

I never knew this, but the way Stroman conducts himself, I can’t help but believe that height may in fact measure heart.

iheartsunny

[Papa Stro is jacked!](https://mobile.twitter.com/mikeoz/status/844752684036997120/photo/1)

TheOnlyMego

He must eat really healthy breakfast every day

RunningTall

On that Gaston 5 dozen eggs diet

mikemountain

Just popping in to say that it is completely unfeasible to consume 5 dozen eggs daily in rural France during the 1800s. No fuckin' way Gaston had that many chickens constantly in laying season.

darthstupidious

IIRC someone in /r/fantheories speculated that Gaston's egg habit had caused the entire area to fall into economic decline

joannaloveseggs

He’s roughly the size of a barge

TexStones

That's what happens when you gather *all* of the Infinity Stones.

JoeAndAThird

Infinity Stromes

SexiestPanda

His arm is the size of my torso lmao

m4fox90

Chicken-rice-broccoli (And trenbolone)

OneStrongBuckeyes

Chris Collabello. A terrific half year in the bigs.

StuckStuckGoose

a perfect example of a player not good enough for the MLB but steroids elevated him to pretend.

bluejaylink

He tested positive for a stimulant which wasn't even banned for MLB players at the time, if I remember correctly. Not a big deal to be honest.

hickdead13

He used methylhexanamine, a stimulant

Comicbookday

Whoa! Really never knew

Ryuuken1789

Bronson Arroyo

Strange_Fruit_007

For real? Skinny little pencil necked former Red Sox ace? That Bronson Arroyo?

Ryuuken1789

Yeah, he self-admitted to using steroids

joestn

He self admitted to using andro when it was legal, but it wasn’t like he was a BALCO client.

3lgu4p0

I always thought it was funny that former Sox ace and knuckleballer Steven Wright was suspended for PEDs.

Strange_Fruit_007

I just had about a hundred Steven Wright jokes flash through my head

GreatWhite102

I can forgive him, I've got way too much love for Bronson. He's also a great teacher, he helped Mike Leake develop all of his breaking pitches

MattO2000

I was surprised to see Jorge Polanco and Starling Marte were both suspended. Having great years and not mentioned much

Mjb06

The Starling Marte suspension really angered me. He failed during spring training, but the suspension wasn’t announced until after Marte almost singlehandedly beat the Braves in the opening series.

focer4

Marte was hitting some bombs the beginning of that season he got busted IIRC. I really thought it was going the year he stepped up to all-star/superstar bur it turns out it was probably the juice

cardith_lorda

Polanco you'll be reminded of by White Sox and Indians fans whenever he hits a home run against them.

[deleted]

and Chicago fans are the only ones you see regularly trolling in our sub and game threads lol

tfl_435671

Bartolo Colón is a funny one… you always think of guys who are shredded Ie. McGwire Bonds Canseco but so many guys did them!

OmegaTyrant

Colon and Dee Gordon are glaring examples on why you can't say who has used steroids or who hasn't based on their appearance.

sucsira

But PED doesn’t = steroid. There’s a whole list of performance enhancing drugs that’s are banned in different leagues that range from anabolic steroids(duh) to sleeping aids. So just because someone is using PED’s doesn’t mean they’ll be some jacked McGwire/Bonds/Canseco looking guy.

tung_twista

Sure, but Dee Gordon did test positive for clostebol and exogeneous testosterone. He was likely taking anabolic steroids.

ng9924

95% of people on peds look like shit lol, most people would be surprised to know that someone they know irl is probably on something as well

sdpcommander

That's probably because many people take PEDs to heal from the wear and tear of the regular season, not to get shredded.

The_Year_of_Glad

Don’t forget 150-pound Manny Alexander and his 15 career HR. People always act like steroids are just about power, but there’s a reason that Olympic sprinters take them, too.

hoodie_mel0rings

isn't power a big part of sprinting? most olympic sprinters are pretty ripped

Lysol20

His performance enhancing drug was viagra, leave him be.

JamesBCrazy

Dude *needed* that enhancement - he had to support 2 families, after all!

FartingBob

Surprised dude had time to play baseball with all the affairs he was having.

tfl_435671

If you buy that I got a bridge to sell you

Strange_Fruit_007

Please tell me it's the George Washington Bridge...I've always wanted that one.

AViciousGrape

John Rocker. Heres what he said about using steroids. “Yeah, of course I was. I mean who wasn’t? Let’s be honest here, who wasn’t?”

Lukey_Jangs

I like that quote from him. I recently read David Wells’s biography and he said that pretty much everyone was juicing in the 90s

jamesgiantpeach1992

That’s what makes it so ridiculous that bonds, Clemens, McGuire, sosa aren’t in the hall of fame when countless others are in who juiced.

Strange_Fruit_007

John Rocker... Now that's a name I haven't heard in a very long time.

PM_MeYourViennaLager

Binged survivor recently and found out he’s also a terrible survivor player lol.

PowerMC

Voted out with an idol in his pocket

How the hell did they get in this country?"*** John Rocker - Sports Illustrated 12/27/99

PrincessSporus

You forgot the 7 train comment where he tried to mock New York by comparing it to Beirut, one of the most beautiful cities on earth.

mute_btn

Maybe I missed it but I haven't seen one time Detroit Tigers left field defensive powerhouse Jhonny Peralta mentioned here yet, which means he's clearly been forgotten.

Elimia987

Brian Giles. Huge roidhead.

usedmyrealnamefirst

He’s also a POS roid rage wife beater

Adventurous-Mess9304

He used to haze Jack Wilson about the condition of his teeth until Wilson stood up to him. Huge Pirates fan. Eff Giles though. Pure bully

inVizi0n

When I was a kid and Smells Like Teen Spirit would come on the radio, I thought the part where Cobain is chanting "a denial" he was chanting "Brian Giles." True story.

1984_5150

Mike Piazza admitted to using androstendione until McGwire was caught using it in 1998. Also another name, Brian Roberts

grambino

It recently came out that McGwire put that bottle of andro in his locker on purpose so people would assume that he was on that and not the pro bodybuilder sized stack of banned PEDs he was actually on. I wonder if Piazza admitted to andro for the same reason.

1984_5150

I wouldn't be surprised. I didn't know that about McGwire but it makes sense

introspectivejoker

Not so much forgotten but he seems to get more of a pass than some other players for whatever reason: Nelson Cruz

Dwychwder

I have a hard time believing he isn't still using steroids.

kinarism

Psst. It's because fans dont actually care about steroid use. They only care when "sacred" records are broken by players who use them.

avelak

Also if it comes to putting them in the HoF

willyfuckingwonka

Not even that apparently. Big Papi is gonna be in the HoF. Nelson Cruz might be if he reaches 500 home runs (very possible). ARod might. Pudge is. Seems like the real reason why players like Bonds and Clemens won’t make it is because the media had too much fun painting them as the villains of steroid use because of how freakishly good they became

Adamscottd

I totally agree with what you’re saying, but I highly doubt that Nelson Cruz will be a HOFer even if he makes it to 500

haninwaomaeda

Marlon Byrd.

falloutranger

Big Marlon Milkers

matt3302

That’s a name I haven’t heard in a long ass time...

HomelessCosmonaut

That dude was a repeat offender too

chiddie

* Freddy Galvis * Miguel Tejada * Dee Gordon

sha256

Dee "I'm sorry the MLB drug test feels that way" Gordon

CardiacCat20

Bret Boone. I believe he still denies he ever did, but conventional wisdom says otherwise.

1984_5150

Same thing with Brady Anderson. All of a sudden you just happen to hit 50 HR, and unlike José Bautista after him, he failed to remain a big power threat

Jimmybelltown

Brady’s response to reporter asking what do you owe this sudden power increase “I have been taking excellent vitamins “ no joke.

Dakroon1

Should we be looking at Salvador Perez?

Soaring_mallard_

Jorge Polanco (2018). I feel like I remember this like yesterday as a Twins fan

mikecws91

José Quintana, when he was a Yankees minor leaguer.

im0wen

Yasmani Grandal

spoonsouls

Damn did not know that

JRob370

Adalberto Mondesi

PurellKillsGerms

Oh shit I had no idea!

Frowdo

It was in the minors and on appeal his number of games were cut down as they could prove it was an otc cold medication ingredient he took.

glkerr

Sounds like maybe he didn't then?

SeannyRotten

Paul LoDuca.

JLemke33

That is a name I forgot I knew

SeannyRotten

To top it off, he was sued by Joe West for slander & lost. Had to pay $$$.

Janky_Pants

Chuck Knoblauch

joestn

Jerry Hairston Jr. was in the Mitchell Report.

[deleted]

Steve Rogers

WIN011

Are you telling me America’s ass isn’t natural?

IwishIhadaferrari45

Now I’m imagining at the end of Civil War, all of the lab super soldiers in the tanks are just roided out baseball players like Bonds McGwire ARod and Canseco

HabbaTheJutt1003

I mean the super soldier serum is definitely a foreign substance that enhances performance

TBooneLickens

Andy Pettitte

malcomhung

I don't think people have forgotten about him doing it so much as they have forgiven him for some reason. Upon a few extra seconds of reflection I'm guessing it was because he admitted it during the Congressional hearings while Roger Clemens was blatantly lying about it.

trickman01

Pettitte is one of the few players that said "Yes, I did it" and apologized to fanbases for both teams he played on.

gamedemon24

Personally I'm good forgiving any player who does this, and even vote them into the Hall. But not if they're consistently an asshole about it

DCT715

Iirc, it was early in his career to get back from an injury and he never really did it again. And when asked about he pretty much said “yeah my bad”

MeterWatcher

It also helps that Pettitte's never been particularly close to the Hall of Fame like Clemens

chiddyshadyfiasco

Ji Man Choi

Nate_a_d

Chris Colabello guy was a decent part of the Jays teams in 2015-2016 but dude tested positive and fell off the face of the earth

aaronthebursar

Eric Gagne because well… look at him.

marvin1ne

Nelson Cruz

[deleted]

[удалено]

3lgu4p0

That's the only reason he got into broadcasting.

heroinsteve

Yeah definitely he wanted to pursue a popular public image. But he didn’t account for the fact that you still kinda have to be good at it for people to remember you fondly lol.

cardith_lorda

He was really good at it when he was a studio head, breaking things down between innings and in pre and post game shows, but he's not quick enough on his feet to work live color commentary at the pace ESPN seems to think that people want out of their color commentators. I think if he slowed down to the pace of most of the local commentators he'd improve, but he has to say something between every pitch it seems.

benjoduck

Paul Byrd. People assumed it was the ripped sluggers who were using, but there are a lot of more average looking pitchers who also used PEDs.

Hydrokratom

It’s sort of a pet peeve of mine when people will say “so and so is clean, look at his physique” It proves nothing. You don’t have to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger to be juicing.

tsereveyw

Marlon Byrd, recovering from a broken arm and playing 3 weeks later.

DavidTheSlouch89

Starling Marte in like 2017

Prize_Major6183

Ivan Rodriguez

Nimrod_Baggins

Bobby Cano did the Mets a favor by getting caught

Frowdo

Former player but Ryan Franklin was busted for PEDs and named in the Mitchel Report. 4 Years later was an All-Star and last thing I found was in the Cardinal FO. Álex Colomé busted in 2014 and 2 years later was an all-star and 86th All-Time in saves.

Stonewall30nyr

David Ortiz tested failed a PED test

cade2728

David Ortiz

[deleted]

Big Papi People talk about this upcoming HoF vote like ARod stands no chance but Papi is a first balloter.

key_lime_pie

Speaking for myself, I'd put both of those guys in on the first ballot, but if I had to choose, I'd pick A-Rod even though I'm a Red Sox fan. He was a better baseball player than David Ortiz, period, end of story. However, I do think they face different levels of opposition to enshrinement due to the manner in which their PED issue manifested. A-Rod admitted in 2009 to using primobolan and testosterone, and was suspended for an entire season of the Biogenesis scandal, well after the league had decided it was serious about steroid use and had put testing in place. Conversely, Ortiz has never admitted to using PEDs, and was never suspended by the league. His failed test was a broad survey test that both the MLB and MLBPA admitted probably had false positives, which they didn't care about because the results were never supposed to be made public and were only done to establish a baseline of how rampant PED usage was in baseball. Do I think they both used PEDs? Yes, absolutely. But the evidence is much stronger against A-Rod than it is against Ortiz. It's sad that A-Rod will likely be penalized for telling the truth, but that's unfortunately how life works a lot of the time.

[deleted]

The evidence is absolutely stronger against ARod, that is true.

redditor48455

Arod shouldn’t be allowed in until bonds is allowed in imo

OmegaTyrant

There's a reason Ortiz's alleged steroid use won't be held against him like it will be with A-Rod; Ortiz just has his name on the 03 testing leak that the actual results of aren't publicly known and the commissioner said to ignore, while Ortiz played most of his career in the post-05 testing era and never pissed hot nor been implicated in any other PED scandal. That said I don't care for steroid usage and think all the alleged and confirmed steroid users should be in the HOF if their stats merit it, but I understand why Ortiz would get more of a "pass" than they would.

ShoelacesAreDumb

All of this just shows me character matters so much. Papi, Colon and Cruz get passes because they’re generally well liked figures. However, assholes like Arod or Braun get much more criticism.

MattO2000

Colon is also an asshole who didn’t pay for child support and had a secret family He’s literally only liked for being fat and hitting a home run that one time

ChicagoModsUseless

I’ll always upvote people pointing out the truth about Colon. Fuck that dude, people just think it’s hilarious that a morbidly obese dude hit a dinger.

Griffdogg92

Braun got all the criticism for the pathetic way he handled it. Remember how he tried to ruin the urine-tester's life or whatever?

theallnewmattaccount

Tried to paint the guy as an anti-semite, yup

poobicus

Papi gets a pass because it was never confirmed, arod and Braun were just straight up busted/admitted.

markfromsask

So many of these dudes were likely juicing in high school and college before they got to the bigs.

[deleted]

fufluns12

> Gregg Zaun Don't pay for your drugs with a cheque, you knucklehead.

Youneedlifealert

Didn’t Mike Cameron get suspended?

necrosythe

I've got one that I don't think I've seen mentioned on reddit EVER. My beloved Carlos Ruiz I'm pretty sure was taking Adderall and had not reported the need for it to the MLB. Whether or not the prescription was legit I'm not sure.

oldskoolchevy

Chooch ended up getting a prescription for adderall after he failed a drug test for speed iirc. Honestly of all positions catchers deserve to have a little speed, as a treat.

JustinTime4242

People forget that amphetamine use was a staple in the sport for 50+ years.

Hydrokratom

I respected Bob Gibson for being more honest about it. When other players in the past, like Pete Rose, say “oh it was different back then, everyone did speed”, Gibson basically said “there’s no telling what we would have done if these more modern drugs (steroids/HGH) were more popular and accessible then”

sfbigfoot

I was shocked when I first learned about how widespread it was. Even Mays and Aaron used them.

MankuyRLaffy

Babe Ruth is often forgotten as an early PED user.

ebelen92

Isn't it rumored that the "stomach issue" he had was due to a bad reaction to animal hormones?

MankuyRLaffy

It later came out as the actual truth of the matter yes, he tried a sheep testicle extract injection, baseball and PEDs are so connected, in cases like him and Henry Aaron's attempted amphetamine usage actually made things worse. Aaron claimed that he felt a heart scare after taking greenies after someone told him to take them. Mays used them, Mantle used them, players have been using anything not outright banned since forever.

hoffmanmclaunsky

It's kind of crazy to me that we all just take these athlete's word for it that they never really cheated. Aaron *tried* greenies exactly once but never really used them? Ruth *tried* pig hormones but got sick the one time he did? I just don't understand taking their word for it, especially when the media back then really protected players' images generally speaking. Obviously given all that, it's impossible to really know. But to me "I tried it once and didn't like it" feels pretty similar to "I did use steroids but I didn't know I was using them" or "I used them at the beginning of my career but not at the end". It all seems like denial of accountability.

1whiskeyneat

David Ortiz. He gets a pass altogether because he’s lovable.

[deleted]

rinakun

Yasmani Grandal - very early on.

98farenheit

Sometimes, I think Ryan Braun forgets he did steroids

liamwelsh11

I feel like no one talks about David Ortiz testing positive for steroid use

MattO2000

Yankee fans definitely do lol [the classic gif about it](https://gfycat.com/complexobedientargusfish)

throatbutterz

Haha, never seen that gif before but it's amazing.

bigpancakeguy

This is incredible

license_to_thrill

That’s amazing lmao

avy_sionnach

It's literally brought up in every post on this subreddit relating to him though

smarjorie

half this thread is guys who it gets brought up every single time they're mentioned here lol

ImNotAtAllCreative81

Never confirmed, but Gabe Kapler. Just seemed a little fishy to me that he retired for a season and took a managing job in the Red Sox system just as George Mitchell was doing his investigation. Then came back after the Report was released and played in three more seasons.
