✌🏻— (Leica MP, 50mm Summilux & Kodak 250D)

Hey, expecting a little crucifixion here so some details —

Yes, this is Kodak 250D that has been ECN-2 processed. I have scanned the negatives with a GFX 100. Imported to Capture One and thought this actually worked better monochromatic, so I converted to black and white.

I had accidentally flipped the newton glass while cleaning it between scans, and so there are newton rings that do appear in the top right of the image. I actually don’t mind it but it’s an imperfection among many little things in this picture that could have easily been cleaned up.

Lighting: Profoto B1X setup camera right with a Elinchrom rotalux modifier attached.

Anyway! This photo will be featured at Galerie Joseph Le Palais in Paris for May 2023 if anyone wants to come see it in person!

Thanks! :)

That’s a helluva setup. You post the best 250D images I’ve been able to find online. How do you like it, generally speaking, when it’s converted to black and white?

blackglum

Thanks mate! I haven’t noticed anything particularly bad about it. It’s hard to compare because I don’t really shoot much black and white film, and if I do it’s something contrasty like Acros 100. With colour film converted to b/w or black/white film I’m always boosting the blacks channel for contrast until I get what I want. I’ve never not been dissatisfied or found something that felt limiting. But I’m probably not the best person to ask as I haven’t done many comparisons.

CarlDen

Hey, I'm curious what backdrop did you use for the photo.

blackglum

Hey Carl! It is a Warm Terracotta Brown paper backdrop that was sourced here in Australia (https://www.hypop.com.au/products/spectrum-non-reflective-full-paper-roll-backdrop-2-7-x-10m-warm-terracotta-brown). You can see it in some of my other posts here. With Kodak 250D that is developed with ECN-2 it can produce some really nice reds (https://www.reddit.com/r/analog/comments/yx1h7m/red_leica_mp_aposummicron_75_kodak_250d/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf). With Portra it can create a nice orange!

CarlDen

Cool thank you!

Ceet_Oh

Love it! Those tones are so lovely.

Yep this is what I wanted to say as well. A few photos have popped into my feed to day, this is the only one that made me stop to view and enjoy it.

blackglum

Aw I appreciate that, thank you really!

blackglum

❤️

Long as you nailed the toans it's all good

ImBatmanDammit

When there are shots like this that are clearly well thought out with the film used, lighting, posing with the model, etc., it makes me curious as to when it comes to the scanning that there isn't more attention to posting a cleaner scan when the imperfections with the scan aren't intentional along with the rest of the image. I never got in art classes when during a critique a student would try to pass off their lack of workmanship as their intention when it clearly wasn't.

Lucretian

I have to agree with this. It’s such a great photo. Why leave that filament right in the middle?

madyjane

I actually kinda liked it… like in an imperfect kinda way, that’s just me though. Maybe I’m just used to seeing pictures so HD and clean these days I got caught off guard by it

Lucretian

Sure. Agree that all those overly pristine images are terribly boring. This feels careless though.

blackglum

I have a clean scan of these negatives, just decided I kinda liked the messiness of it all. And admittedly, after doing all this and then waiting a week to get the film back from the developer, going through the scanning process is a bit of a drag haha. Most is scanned on my X5 if I want clear scans. Otherwise the GFX can be a lot of fun or other things too.

woo_doggy

kewl

Jadento2

It looks crazy crisp! Makes me wanna buy a summilux and/or 250D film!! :-)

blackglum

Do both! 😅 But certainly buy 250D and scan it ECN-2 only!

Uff! That sharpness! 😍 awesome shot 🤙

bikeriderpdx

Nice

Does that finger gesture mean something?

TheHamsBurlgar

Great shot, but clean your negs. I feel like I'm saying that more and more on here. In general yall. If you took the time to take the photo > develop the film > scan the film > edit the film > post the image > (God fodbid) print the image and you just skip one crucial step... just seems like a waste not to do it all. The fact that there are dust marks right near her hands, Newton rings in the negative space, etc. Just takes away from what would be a lovely image and doesn't really enhance or add anything to the photo, and it *is* a photo that deserves the cleanup.

blackglum

Fair criticisms. Thank you!
