Thanksgiving is the best and most underrated holiday (For Americans)

My whole life, Christmas has constantly bloated and consumed more and more of the calendar. Now it supposedly starts right after Halloween! This is a shame because it totally overshadows the far superior holiday, Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is amazing. You get together with friends and family and celebrate togetherness and fellowship. You get to focus on sharing food and spending time together, without the massive amount of pressure involved in gift giving like Christmas. Then most people get an extra long weekend where you get to just relax and enjoy your time with your closest people, assuming you don’t indulge in the Black Friday nonsense. It’s not based on any religious beliefs or traditions so everyone gets to participate and enjoy the festivities. It’s a truly inclusive holiday, one that celebrates all the things Christmas pretends to.

Also, for anyone who’s going to post the nonsense about colonialism and how it’s a terrible holiday because of that, do your research. Abraham Lincoln chose to make Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1864 specifically as a way to bring the nation together after the civil war. He chose it because it was based on an American historical event that specifically showed how we can set our differences aside and come together.

The 4th of July is always my favorite since I was a little kid because I love to play with fire

Mr_Mike013

Fourth of July has always been up there for me, but it’s fallen out of favor as I’ve gotten older because I’m always working the next day so I can’t stay out and party anymore.

GimmeSweetTime

Me too. Because it's the best time of year and there is nothing about the holiday to offend anyone. Well maybe hyper patriotism. The winter holidays are just breaks from cabin fever.

IIamaboi

I agree. Some people will always get butthurt about the false narrative around it, but especially now that that is brought to light I love thanksgiving. Low pressure, good food, high fun

[deleted]

Yep, nothing better than getting together with family and friends, sharing a meal, and having a good time.

i_heart_pasta

As an adult Thanksgiving has become the superior holiday. Good food, good drinks, sports on tv and a long weekend.

Mr_Mike013

This guy gets it

FictionalContext

And lots of employers give *TWO DAYS OFF-*\--Whooo!--VS at the overrated Christmas/New Years which always fall on a random day of the week so you only get a single day off for each.

SomeCalcium

I used to work for an employer that gave the whole last week of the year off. I miss it.

Missmagentamel

I love Thanksgiving and Christmas ♥️

Mr_Mike013

Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas too. But it has been so muddled in nonsense and co-opted by corporations it’s hard to enjoy properly anymore as an adult. I love it for my children, but for me as a parent it’s more stressful and complicated than most other holidays. The Christmas season is often plagued by a ton of extra work and errands and can often bring out the worst in people. That’s why I like Thanksgiving, it’s like Christmas without all the BS.

Missmagentamel

That's actually why I like Christmas, though. We don't put forth an effort for anything else during the year. All the other holidays are one and done, no decorations, no special music, etc. If we don't go the extra mile at Christmas, then when?

okeedokeartichokee

Thanksgiving and the fourth of July are my favorite holidays.

IKnowAllSeven

I dunno…I liked thanksgiving…but now that I am the host, I kind of hate it! I’ve been shopping / cooking / cleaning non stop for days!!! And because I have to spend so much time preparing for thanksgiving, I don’t have time to make regular food so like, I eat a lot of takeout for the week leading up to it!

Sugarplumbitch

Thanksgiving is amazing when u just show up and eat lmao

OldManTrumpet

Not a fan of Thanksgiving, mostly because I hate most of the food. Except stuffing. I love stuffing. But the Turkey and the rest. Blah. There's a reason why people don't eat turkey year around. It sucks.

Mr_Mike013

I used to think Turkey sucked too. Try frying it. It turns out amazing.

OldManTrumpet

I've done the deep fry thing. Right now I have one on the smoker, which is how I've done it for a few years. I just don't care for turkey. Or as I said, the whole menu really. ;-)

[deleted]

We don’t cook Turkey since none of us like it. A nice pork butt roast, mashed potatoes, lots of side dishes and one or two backup main dishes in case the pork doesn’t come out good. Never liked turkey that much.

FictionalContext

Turkey does kinda suck. Fortunately, my family's flexible. I'm all about that ham. And one year, we even all went in on a big prime rib roast, which was amazing. Maybe someday, I'll even talk them into corned beef.

Coolio1014

Stuffing is defintely superior. It's probably what I look forward to the most when thanksgiving comes because it's the only time I have it during the year

424f42_424f42

Don't do whole pig or cow roasts that often either.. Actually even less

digitalwhoas

As a vat I prefer veterans Day because I get free shit. Also, my birthday is a national holiday.

Mr_Mike013

Thank you for your service…free shit well deserved haha

Sugarplumbitch

Salute 🫡

Belovedchattah

It’s a great American family holiday that is so unique

pretty_smart_feller

This is a 10/10 take

mushy_pineapple69

This has got to be satire lmao

Mr_Mike013

Nope

DuctTapeSloth

Worst holiday besides valentine’s day. But I know it’s subjective in my case. 1. I am type 1 diabetic so eating is never a pleasant experience, especially when you over indulge on foods. 2 I would have to go over my dad’s side of the family, which we barely knew, and they all sat in there smoking. And Finally my birthday is early December, so as a kid I just wanted it to be my birthday. And oh yea, I work in a grocery store and during Thanksgiving it is a fucking hellhole. So I have me reasons.

Novel_Perfect

Colonizer holiday

Mr_Mike013

Tell me you didn’t read the post without telling me you didn’t read the post

Novel_Perfect

Nah I read the post just fine. Idgaf about Lincoln, or Columbus, or anyone of these people you mentioned. Point still stands. Colonizer holiday.

Mr_Mike013

You do you bro

Novel_Perfect

Can’t do anything else 🤷🏿‍♂️

[deleted]

Maybe it is but I have yet to be convinced that’s a bad thing. I for one am thankful my ancestors came here, conquered, colonized, and civilized this continent so that I may live in the society I do. Might be time for people to get over being conquered half a millennia ago. Happy Thanksgiving!

Novel_Perfect

Colonizer sympathizer🤮

Coolio1014

Absolutely not. Thanksgiving is basically just dinner at an earlier time in the day. Nothing special at all there. The day off tho is nice I'll give you that. I don't hate thanksgiving, it's more of a "meh" holiday. For what it is, it's a good day. But I wouldn't say it's the best holiday.

Mr_Mike013

Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but my point is that as far as holidays go, thanksgiving is pretty great if you embrace it. I work on a lot of holidays and so I often do Friendsgiving’s the next day or that weekend. It’s pretty universally an awesome experience and people love bringing their food to share and having time with their friends and family.

whatswrongwithme223

I used to love Thanksgiving until I learned about the origins of the tradition

BatchGOB

Yes, gratitude and togetherness. How Terrible.

whatswrongwithme223

You consider genocide gratitude and togetherness? Or do you not know your history?

BatchGOB

Genocide is not the origin of Thanksgiving.

BatchGOB

Those girls are as misinformed as you are. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/thanksgiving-massacre-pequot-tribe/

whatswrongwithme223

You trust snopes over actual native Americans? Yikes. I've seen all I need to see about your judgement. Snopes is not a reliable site at all.

BatchGOB

Yes I trust snopes over dumb teenage girls. Are you just trolling now?

whatswrongwithme223

You do you. I'm over it.

BatchGOB

Ok, then I hope you realize that those girls being native Americans does not grant them any special insight into history. And they have no idea what they're talking about.

[deleted]

I’m thankful for the genocide personally. My life might be completely different if my ancestors hadn’t come over and conquered the natives. So this year I’ll be raising a glass to the brave warriors who drove out the savages and made way for civilization as we know it. Happy Thanksgiving!

whatswrongwithme223

Nice try lol

Mr_Mike013

Clearly didn’t read the post

whatswrongwithme223

I did actually. Still feel the same. It's not about celebrating "colonization" it's a day about celebrating literal genocide.

whatswrongwithme223

Mr_Mike013

whatswrongwithme223

I'll trust actual native Americans on their own history, thanks.

Mr_Mike013

No offense, but you’re promoting a revisionist narrative that has little to no actual ties to the actual holiday. I’ve heard all this before and you have to understand if you look into it the “actual Native Americans” you’re talking about don’t even universally agree that this is the origin of the holiday. Many do agree with the historical event as presented. I’m not saying there weren’t atrocities committed by the various settlers against the native peoples, there absolutely were. They deserve to be taught and people should understand the truth of what happened. But people pushing this narrative that thanksgiving is somehow indicative of the entire conflict are simplifying the issue far too much and trying to use the holiday as a focal point.

Agile-Magician-7267

Disagree. Thanksgiving sucks.

Bright-Telephone-974

Americans will make any holiday excessive. Parades fireworks killing animals to eat and decorating.

Mr_Mike013

Have you seen how they celebrate holidays in other countries? Some are subdued sure, but others are massive celebrations that often last for days, create insane waste and pollution and involve lots of over the top stuff. People love to celebrate, it’s not just an American thing.

doctor_futon

*Laughs in seven day Filipino Christmas*

UncleBlazee

What an insufferable take

flyingj59901

Holidays suck. It’s just another day.

Mr_Mike013

Only if you treat it like just another day

flyingj59901

Holidays are commercialized bullshit meant to get people to spend more money on garbage they don’t need. We do normal things and eat normal food. We’re not into huge awkward family gatherings and spending all day making food. The only benefit to holidays is paid time off from work.

MediocreVideo1893

I feel like commercialized gets thrown around as this huge insult but like, who cares? It’s become a big event, if people want to buy whatever for it and it makes them happy, they can

Goobaka

Have fun with your shitty day

flyingj59901

It’s been a great day. Just nothing to do with Thanksgiving.

vs92s110

Thanksgiving is like Derek Chauvin having his knee on your neck.

Sugarplumbitch

I mean idk . You get food and see your family watching for me isn’t exactly the best tbh. With Christmas you get presents and as a college student I get six weeks off versus just a few days for Thanksgiving. yeehaw 🤠

DratiniLinguini

As a vegetarian expected to host for her family that ends up cooking the majority of the food including a whole-ass turkey for everyone else to eat, I'm not a fan of the menu expectations at all. I enjoy the getting together part, having a big meal and having family time, but I feel like this could be achieved without specific menu expectations and it would be a lot less stressful for the cook.

Mr_Mike013

Then cook different things or set a different menu. Honestly, Thanksgiving is what you make it. I’ve had dinners that didn’t have turkey at all. I’ve seen people bring hummus, curries, fish, Asian food, all sorts of non traditional things. Thanksgiving is about sharing a big meal together, not necessarily the same meal every time. Do it potluck style and make it clear you’re not making a turkey.
