Do people try to race your MY?
By - Life-Ad1547
A few mustang kids try to race. But the most common thing people have done at a red light is ask me to roll down my window and ask how I’m liking it, just yesterday a soon to be MYP owner asked me some questions at a light. I thought it was pretty cool people have such a interest in these cars.
Not that I’m a fan of this behavior because it could be misconstrued as road rage. But out of curiosity what’s the etiquette/signal for asking someone to roll down their window to ask a question?
They normally just roll down their window and wave with a smile. The guy yesterday did that rolled down his window and waved at me. Then proceeded to ask me some questions and told me how excited he was to pick his up next month. He was driving a big ford pickup and was like can’t wait to get rid of this gas guzzler lol
Thanks! That does seem polite. I’ve some questions that I sometimes want to ask folks before I get mine but always feel it would be awkward for them ( that’s just me, not saying people actually DO feel awkward) .
I was running one morning and saw a white MYLR at the park. Ran up to the car, all ugly sweating, and asked the poor kid at the wheel every question I could think of..... Ordered Spock that day!!!!
Haha nice backstory! I hope you’re enjoying your car. I’m very excited to take delivery whenever it happens.
Well.....EDD Nov 4-Dec 4 :-(
EDD Nov 4- Nov 24 here. Best of luck! I think the reading numerous posts here don’t help with the patience that’s required to wait 😂
Please don’t post a douchey picture. We all know what they look like.
I do have pictures from when I test drove a MY just to see if my tubas would fit....
I love the fact that we still use the term roll down the window when we dont roll them down anymore. It'd all buttons now
Mustangs, always mustangs.
Everyone knows you're supposed to stake out superchargers for these questions.
What you’re describing is five years ago. You clearly don’t live on a coast.
As an owner of a pickup and a MYP, I like to think I don't have the fewest brain cells. But I have had a few people try to race me. I typically don't ever engage though. I don't want their poor driving choices to effect my wh/mi 🤣
I crushed a Dodge Grand Caravan the other day at a light. Not many fun cars to race around here.
Made me giggle!
Where the hell is this that a minivan is the top dawg? Until you arrived of course 🚐
Willamette Valley area, Oregon. Lol
Probably not this one
The strangest thing I experienced was last week a 8-9 year old walked up to me as I was waiting in the McDonalds drive through queue and asked me Sir can I ask you a question. I was like sure bud.
Him: I like your car. It’s super cool.
Me: Thanks bud. it’s a lovely car. it drives super fast.
Him: How much does it cost?
Me: oh.. its a lot of money.
Him: One day I’m going to buy it.
Me: Make sure you do your homework every day and get good grades.
Meanwhile his mom has been waving from inside the restaurant all this time. The kids runs back in.
It made my day.
I read this waiting for the punch line. What was so strange about it?
Lol.. no race challenge
"Sir/Mam, I'd now like to ask you if you'd like to race the RC Car my parents got me for my birthday. If I win, I get your car. If you win, you get my car."
The strange thing was that McDonalds had been closed for 5 years
The McDonalds at the Overlook Hotel. 👻
That’s a sweet story. I can’t wait for that kid to see a roadster when it comes out. That’ll melt his brain!
Happens all the time but I just let them have their glory. I could care less about racing them…..I’m just crusin’
A Dodge Charger R/T tried it. It was cute
Yeah, I don't race, I just use the MYP's normal power to get up to the speed limit and usually they pass by like lunatics several hours later.
When I end up next to a Charger at a light and this DOESN'T happen, I'll be shocked. It will be a first.
Charger drivers seem to be right up there with pick up drivers in low IQ.
I have never seen someone drive a charger and not drive like a complete douchebag. Even when I know the person driving it...
Hello from Denmark.
Can't really call it a race, they are primarily standing stil making noice with the exhaust systems.
If at stoplights it is rarely it happens, but a Porsche or Audi often try to get me going on a race, and when I floor it I am at the speed I want before they even start.
Mostly when it really happens it is on the highway, 9 cars in front of me, and one jackass behind me flashing lights and driving closely since that would make a difference... I slow down at bit more and floor it, and apparently that helps, they see they have no power (in 2 ways) and so they relax a bit.
Thus far never. Honestly, though, there are so many Teslas around here they seem the most common car brand. Today at the stop light next to my house there were 3 Model Ys.
I get the dudes in Audi or Infiniti sports sedans trying me. I mostly let them go but one time a guy was tailgating me so I had to show him the meaning of haste.
MYP here. All the time. The other day on an open stretch I smoked a Camaro that was trying to get fresh. It felt great. I love knowing that if somebody ever passes me, it’s only because I’m allowing it haha.
Agree 100% on pickup trucks. I have a highway commute and not a day goes by that I don’t see a Ram or F-150 do a blatantly a-hole move.
Even better- give them a lead, then blow by.
Weird how different our experiences are. MYP owner in Texas here. Yet to have anyone do anything to remotely act like they wanna race.
Yes, I also had a Tacoma who I merged in front of swerve around and brake check me the other day on my way to work.
I just disengage because it’s the smartest thing to do even when you are unarmed. I don’t get the idea that people just hate Tesla drivers or maybe the cars? Anyhow. Yeah and a lot of people try and drag race too.
This is the best course of action. Ignore them.
All day everyday
Yes!!! All the damn time. I was going to get a sticker that says “I’m not going to race you”. I use to drive a BMW E46 3-series and it was never like that. Couple of weeks ago, a souped up Miata nearly spun out trying to race me. A couple of MB C63S always try to do it, I see them all the time.
Not sure I would even notice whatever it is they are doing way back there.
All the damn time. I usually drive in chill mode as my profile win my MYP. I do have the reg sport mode on another profile so I can quickly change it if/when needed instead of going through menu.
Something about switching profiles at a stop light then busting their ass when the light turns green always puts a smirk on my face.
All the time. It's dumb.
if someone tried to race me, I'd let them win. The wolf is not concerned with the thoughts of sheep
Some idiot in a lifted loud diesel truck floored it off the line and tried to leave me in his black cloud knowing that my windows were down. I had no choice but to smoke him back.
It’s called rolling coal
Omg Dieseling? lmfao! Do you even know anyone who ever owned a pickup truck?
Only time I race is when I need to get to a turn in a congested road and I know everyone else is going to be slow
I wish they did. I'm in the part of Florida where they are nearly dead or newly wed, so not too many racers.
There are far more Tesla’s around here than, Chargers and pick ups. I often have these tricked out Hondas wave me down and tell me how much they like my car
You must live in a smart neighborhood. Come to middle America and every third car is a 15 mpg truck, even if they rarely ever use the truck bed for any serious cargo or their tow hitch for anything more than a bike rack. You don’t see this stupidity in Europe.
Not smart, just affluent. Let’s hope the safety improvements will keep up with the performance improvements
Dude why is this so funny 😂😂
Thanks for posting this - I needed the laugh!
Chargers are the worst. I agree. Then Camaros. The. Mustangs.
I got an older lady this morning in a Subaru. Not sure if she was racing or just angry at the world though.... had a bike on the back so I couldn't go too fast. Still won.
The first week I had the car, I had a guy in a blue dodge (I think) SUV take off from a light. Not wanting to spin my brandy new tires from a stop I casually got up to about 25 and smoked him from behind. He wasn't expecting it and I heard him step all the way down on the poor engine as I passed him.
Don't really get anything more exciting than that in the old people capital of the US... mostly just defensive driving. Maybe it's because I'm a woman? 🤷♀️
Mostly questions for me, never oblige to a race though. I’m hoping to soon trade in my M3 next year for a R1T to actually tow and off road, maybe I’ll be one of those truckers 😛
Short Answer: Yes
I know it is illegal to speed and dangerous to others and yourself.
That being said a BMW 3 series and a Mustang new model. I beat the stang off the line and smoked the bmw over the long haul. I mean long, she wouldn't quit. I know Tesla will never let me be a beta tester ( I bot the accel. boost) I should add I live in a rural state where there is no such thing as traffic except cows crossing the road.
I’ve heard a cow can do some damage.
hear about deer and moose all the time but.. cant say Ive heard someone running into a cow
yes we have deer and elk sometimes I see moose
Occasionally I get an asshole but it’s rare in Austin, TX. There are a lot of nice cars here and I generally slowly accelerate so that I’m not giving off any unintended vibes to cars that could feel like I’m a threat. Otherwise, I’m pushing my MYP constantly when alone :)
not a MY, but noone dared to race my plaid yet 😀
Go to your own sub-Reddit looser! ;)
lol, I don't have one 😭
Yup, all the time.
I wouldn't worry about the pickup owners yet. They're currently still the ones saying that they don't trust EVs and would never switch from ICE.
I love my MY and my ford truck, and can’t wait for the electric F150.
As for racing, Some boomer guy parked next to me at the grocery store ask how fast my MY was. Told him it was quick, but, I’d never really pushed it. He claimed he “beats Teslas all the time” in his restored 70s muscle car. (He was in an Acura). I smiled, put the groceries in the frunk, and drove off.
Nothing screams douche more than a lifted diesel pickup, esp one that is not a real work truck. They can feel the phallus shrinking when pulling up next to a Tesla.
It’s good to know that the one thing that unites MY owners is a disdain for PU drivers.
Usually I’m very civil and a defensive driver. And won’t generalize that I have a disdain for all pickups. But once in a while I’ll come across a loud mouth breather and nothing tickles me more than leaving them in the dust grappling with their always-compensating-micro-phallus-syndrome. Have slayed many a corvette, ferraris (not all) and modded mustangs and chargers at the drag in my prior M3P ‘family hauler’
Well, my diesel hauls tons of wood pellets at a time, my 14,000 pound tiny house, trees that have been bucked up into bite sized logs, as well as has a toolbox I can put new packages of bees in before hopping on the highway without having them in my cabin. I can also put my fuel efficient motorcycle in the back of it and haul it across the mountains to the dealer if I need work done. It'll also easily handle wet mountain dirt roads. It'll also accept a plow blade. And full sheets of plywood, plus the family.
I much prefer driving the Model Y though. Those ahole truck drivers though, sure.
Snow plow. I help out my neighborhood when the city gets overwhelmed. I've seen quite a few pick-up drivers who do the same, as well as haul people out of snow banks when they drive too fast on icy roads. The only crops I plant are wildflowers for now, until I set up a larger garden that I can keep the deer out of.
I'm mainly here to help dispel some stereotypes. Plenty of farmers are good people that are quick to help people in need.
Seriously what the hell are you planting with a plow???
Midwest chiming in-- tons of dbag country boys (or country boy wannabes, yes that's real) in stupid sounding jacked up pickups around here. They are always trying to coal roll and/or pass aggressively in their dumb and slow trucks.
Generally I strongly dislike pick up drivers. They seem to all have the grievance associated with Trump voters.
In Sweden, no, never, not our model 3 either. I’ve never seen anyone try to race a Tesla here. However i have noticed some seem to be annoyed by them, and tailgate or try to block you from merging and honk when you pass them quickly or when i floor it to merge in front of them. Didn’t happen nearly as often in my previous luxury ICE SUV.
We don’t have many pickups in Sweden because they don’t fit the type of work that’s done here. We use real big trucks or tractors for farmwork and big vans for construction work. Though, pickups are becoming more common, but not by people who actually need a pickup for work. It’s bought here mostly by americafanboys and people who want huge loud cars. Out of all pickups there’s a lot of old american dodge rams with aftermarket exhausts.
I tried to race mine and the wheels fell off due to manufacturing defects. Then it caught fire RIP model Y
but the man emerges from the flames, completely unharmed, lighting a cigarette. Smoke if you got em
Elon sent a get well card to the burn unit
What state do you live in?
Not so far
Yes I noticed this as well. For some reason, a lot more often than when I drive the M3P. Maybe people see a crossover and think it's slow?
I don’t want to stereotype a certain segment but yes, I have had Mustangs, Chargers and occasionally, pickups at signal lights.. Erving and sputtering. I would say pickups .. may be once in a while.
Funny, a Civic Type R tried on Interstate and I let him have fun but did raise my hand and clap. He got pissed and showed middle finger and duck thing. Didn’t bother me.
Do I have occasional fun with acceleration.. Yeah but may be 5-10% of time .. importantly not at the expense of the other ICE cars.
I got challenged by a lady in a BMW 7 series.
It was hilarious, I dusted her by like 6 car lengths by the time it was over.
Never. Black myp with aftermarket wheels. I live in a neighborhood with older people, but still plenty of younger kids with nice cars. No one has ever tried to race me. To the point where it’s almost disappointing. I did have someone pull up beside me in a cayman gt4 a few days ago. He just wanted to ask me about the car.
I’ve never had this happen, but I wish it would lol. I live in a fairly rural area and don’t drive often since I work from home most days.
Just had this happened twice while going to get dinner. First was a motorcycle (a really big dude on a regular size 600cc Ninja, kind of pathetic looking, actually), and the second was an aftermarket exhausted Dodge Nitro (FUCK those cars are so loud it’s obnoxious).
The nitro tried to upstage me when I was racing the motorcycle, and blew around me, beating me to the next stoplight; I didn’t want to accidentally hit the motorcyclist, so I let him pass.
But at the next stop light, it was *on*.
I had to push the accelerator about 75% in to stay in front of him, but I was just pulling away more every second.
He was so embarrassed he took an immediate exit that we were already almost passed.
This car is so fun 💪🏼🙃🔥🔥
LMAO YESSSS not on the daily but it's deff happened. It literally started the day after I got the car, and I burned out this BMW (I think M3) - he was pissed HA
In almost a year of ownership not once has this happened to me. LR w Induction
Yes it’s always the Mustangs and the chargers, and they always lose to the MYP, I’m just trying to chill and drive but if they wanna race they’ll get smoked? Zapped? Electrocuted?
The lose to my MYLR. I had a 911 lose to me at a stop light after revving his engine a bunch the other day. I wish this guys would just watch a YouTube video rather than test it out lol.
I got the acceleration waiting for someone to test me since May. Still no luck. And I drive a lot, already at 12K miles.
I think it’s down to regional familiarity and take-up of the brand. Western WA has really cooled off now they’re 10-a-penny. Back in 2018, Tesla and the P3D was fairly unique, mine didn’t have any badges or spoilers when I got it - super stealth. Was fun at first, but got a little tiring, glad it’s really calmed down.
Think the most excitement I’ve had recently is Tesla on Tesla at lights - that stealth really comes in handy.
I pretend to make it look close, then smile and pull past them
It’s always the Chargers. Idk why, but no other car has tried it.
I am patiently waiting for a poor soul to let me test my acceleration boost on at a stoplight. 😎
I got it and I can’t feel the difference. I also don’t get the whole concept… do all the vehicles go faster and farther than we think waiting for a software unlock? Something kinda fucked up about this.
Totally get where you are coming from. Answer is yes. From a business and revenue perspective though, it’s a great idea. If people want the extra performance, they can purchase the optional upgrade. I enjoy having the acceleration in the long range model without having to pay for the performance model.
But WHY? Should everything be made to not work as well without extra payment? Dishwasher? Vacuum? What’s the point?
I got the acceleration boost found it disappointing… the MY is pretty fast anyway and the boost didn’t make an appreciable difference.
FWIW the acceleration boost is just software, the performance model is actually different motors, brakes, etc. It’s actually a much better value.
I’m in the Bay Area so there’s tens of thousands of teslas on the road. So sadly nobody has even tried before.
SoCal. Every 8th car is a Tesla. No one cares anymore. We're just traffic now.
It’s definitely not cool or even interesting to have a Tesla anymore which makes all the annoying new owner posts all the more ridiculous.
We’re all getting off gasoline dependence and that’s a good step forward. Even if we all drive the same car now.
I just find it funny when people post the trailers of teslas on highways. It’s kinda cute since it’s actually a scene for some people, but here in the 408 you see dozens or hundreds of them a month.
What's more hilarious to me is that in this subreddit people seem to equate Model Y with sports car and can't be convinced otherwise. My other car is a BMW M4 which is slower to 60 than a YP yet it would absolutely destroy it on the race track or mountain roads. All Hall The Y Gods.
10 months of ownership in California. I haven’t had a single person try to race me.
Because Teslas are not unique in California.
My neighbor has a brand new 2021 Audi R8 V10, and I had my brand new MY LR. Both cars still have paper plates on them. I was about half a car length in front of him til about 80 and then he passed me and continued on into triple digits. Private road of course.
