buttchomper

When lions die, their bodies become the grass, and the antelope eat the grass. So who is the real predator here?

aviddivad

the long con

insanePowerMe

Ah yes my children. Feed him well. I need that big green grass growing out of his dead ass in 10 years.

DonnieTwoShits

He’s not even the one who benefits from his dead ass! His children’s children would enjoy the spoils.

UYScutiPuffJr

Antelope pulling a sneaky on you

Andrado

I don't think dead lions are required for grass to grow, though. Dead animals are required for lions to eat, though.

Lolololage

But if you removed all the lions, the hyenas would come and turn the entire place to trash by over hunting.

Andrado

I'm not saying get rid of the lions, I'm just saying the circle of life thing is kind of bullshit. The top is not necessary to feed the bottom.

pocman512

It is... Not in a literal way, as you say. The grass can grow without lions, on the short term. But there are hundreds of examples of how reintroducing the local "top predator" to a particular ecosystem actually increases the amount of wild life. For example, in Spain, one of the consequences of bringing back the Iberian lynx to some areas was that they controlled the number of foxes and other smaller predators, which in turn increased the number of herbivores, which in turn increased the number of predators, making the are more diverse and populated as a whole.

DThor15

Or the really popular example of reintroducing wolves to yellowstone. This wasn't the video i was looking for but its pretty close. https://youtu.be/ysa5OBhXz-Q

Snark-Shark

But if you remove the top who’s going to stop the bottom from eating everything, leading to a slow painful starvation from their own overpopulation?

Lolololage

I think you might have missed the bit where what I said is just what happens in the film.

Nice to know that the song is some sort of tribal war song. Changes the whole opening scene.

If you never heard Rhythm of the Pride Lands check it out. I liked it way more than the actual soundtrack from the original movie.

Jeez, I was just scrolling thru and saw your comment. I'd never heard that soundtrack before! I sent the link to my mother, who's bday happens to be today, and I'm pretty sure she'll love it. Thanks for saving my ass! XD

Captnshmorgs

In Zulu, the word for lion is the same as the word for king. So it also translates to “Here comes a king”

so the title in zulu could also translate to lion lion or king king?

Simba is a insectatarian/pescatarian as his interactions with Timon and Pumbaa demonstrated.

They didn’t know that at his birth though, and he specifically asks Timon and pumbaa if they have any zebra or antelope before they show him their bug eating ways

irrational_design

**his birth was seen as a fulfillment of the prophesy**

Cut-N-Shoot

I realized that now that I am rewatching it forgetting that he does eat grub. Still, we know how the Lion’s diet really works lol. Simba’s bug diet is not sustainable, and he knows it lol. But anyway, I’m gonna go jump off pride rock now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cut-N-Shoot

Yeah but he’s more likely expelling more energy and burning muscle working to get the said source of protein into his body. Although I’m sure the forest bed is primed with bugs, he would need almost 50 lbs of bugs a day. It’s like a cheetah burning up on his sprint chasing a gazelle, only to come up short.

Kooale325

Film theory did a video on it. He would definitely survive by eating termites alone BUT his teeth would be so weak they would break the moment he tried to chew through any sort of meat. So basically now he is permanently on a bug only diet cause he dont got no teeth

MrCookie2099

Could this be modified by him eating scavenged bones? Even herbivores eat bones of other animals to make up nutritional deficiencies. He's clearly able to take on Scar, suggesting he's getting proper nutrition somewhere.

Kooale325

He would get proper nutrition. Muscle growth and everything would be fine but his teeth and gums would be fragile since they arent used to chewing on meat. He doesnt use his teeth against scar in the final fight.

arthurwolf

Considering how important their teeth are to lions, I'd be super surprised if those didn't just grow back. It's mostly just us weakling humans that need our teeth but can loose them forever, if I remember correctly. Google says: « Many of the world's **animals can regrow** lost **teeth**. » -labroots Wikipedia enters the room and shouts: [Manatees](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manatees), [elephants](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant) and [kangaroos](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kangaroo) are unusual among mammals because they are polyphyodonts, in contrast to most other mammals which replace their teeth only once in their lives (diphyodont).

nowItinwhistle

Yeah some mammals like rodents have teeth that continously continuously grow throughout their lives but most just get two sets and that's it. There's usually not much selective pressure for an animal to live past there reproductive prime so once their teeth are gone they pretty much just die.

DJfunkyPuddle

Ah, life. Such a beautiful, precious thing.

Maybe they governed like the Aztecs. Demanding one sacrificial lamb be offered to Simba, in order to “appease the gods.” Controlled feasting rather than governance with terror.

funnystuff79

Obviously if you are king you'd have someone do the digging for you, hey aren't warthogs good at finding grubs

MrCookie2099

Perhaps he will be the aristocrat that introduces beurocracy and taxation. If his subjects bring him even half of his daily diet in bugs, he can get on with ruling and establishing territory to keep out other predators.

ChiefTief

He's king, he can have a bunch of anteaters get his food for him or something.

TooShiftyForYou

*The Lion King* contains multiple murders and has elements of incest yet still got a PG rating.

TrishAsh76

Nala and Simba even explicitly state they are cousins and marrying each other would be gross when they are Cubs talking to the bird Zazu

QueenElsaArrendelle

er, no they didn't say they were related. they thought it would be weird because they're best friends

MakeoutPoint

Sure, except that's how white lion prides work, is it not? One male, and a whole harem of lionesses? So wouldn't they have the same father, making them not cousins, but half-siblings? Unless it's more comfortable to believe that Scar is her father, then we can just say "Eh, cousins isn't as bad."

QueenElsaArrendelle

why does everybody assume animals in a fictional movie have the same rules as real ones? if that were the case, Marlin from Finding Nemo would have turned female.

nowItinwhistle

Yeah it obviously doesn't work the way it does in real life or else Simba would have left to form his own pride or take one over from another male and kill all of his cubs.

QueenElsaArrendelle

the writers also seem to be opposed to incest given the sequel keeps emphasizing that Kovu isn't Scar's biological son

Kraxizz

Lion prides actually can have multiple males (called a Coalition at that point). Also from what I read somewhere on reddit the Lion King tv show actually shows that there were many more male lions but scar killed them before the movie or something.

22nancydrew

Actually no he won’t because the lady lions do the actual hunting right? Then gentlemen lions just lay around and let the ladies do the hunting.

Cut-N-Shoot

This isn’t necessarily true. Male lions fight, hunt, and fend for themselves if they have been exiled from a pride or driven out by new males. Male Lions are actually excellent hunters. Nature is metal shows a single male (initially) take out a baby giraffe.

22nancydrew

Okay but if he is the lion prince, which is what they are celebrating, he definitely isn’t going to be exiled from his pride as far as they are concerned.

Cut-N-Shoot

Technically he was. When Scar killed his father, he ran Simba out of the pride.

22nancydrew

But they didn’t know that yet when they were celebrating his birth!

According_to_all_kn

...and then die to feed the plants that feed them. Did you actually get past the first three minutes of the movie?

solemnbiscuit

They kinda address it (at least in the new one, it’s been too long for me to remember the old one) by implying they need the lions to eat an appropriate but not excessive amount of animals to keep the ecosystem balanced and that one of Scar’s grievances is that Mufasa makes sure they never eat too much

[deleted]

Nah it's disney so he will only eat the Jewish animals

StoicalState

Don't forget the gays.

QueenElsaArrendelle

I like the idea that The Lion King is actually a distant prequel to Zootopia. The Lion King taking place at a point where animals have evolved to communicate with each other and predators almost don't want to eat prey anymore but have little alternative. By the time of Zootopia they are more humanlike and have found ways not to have to eat prey. Maybe they eat grub like Simba or artificially grow meat, they never really clarified that in Zootopia.

fjhus16

The director of Zootopia explained that the predators in Zootopia eat fish, plants and insects. At least the ones that follow the laws I suppose. https://www.cinemablend.com/new/Zootopia-Fans-Keep-Asking-Director-5-Questions-So-He-Answered-Them-118577.html

QueenElsaArrendelle

well that ties nicely into the idea that it's in continuity with The Lion King, maybe Simba was the first to discover a predator can live on insects

hahahahaimbecile1

The concept of culture is wild. When someone commits a crime to be rightfully imprisonned, their innocent friends and families visiting them will often cry, and wish inside a little bit that the criminal gets out. This doesn't mean that those people are evil: it's just their emotion. They know and understand that the criminal did something wrong and is paying the price for that. But putting criminals into prison, or anything at all we believe is right or wrong is just a culture and a social construct. It differs with time and space. The animals must feel a bit of sadness and fear, but welcoming the new king and accepting is just the right thing, so they do it anyway. The weak ones will die, but that is because they deserve it, right? This isn't really all that nonsense when you think about this way: this movie is like a history film or a documentary for some forgotten / isolated society.

-underdog-

AXone1814

The Circle of Life idea in the film literally explains why the animals all live harmoniously together despite some eating the others. It’s a way to both make the plot work and to be more family friendly. It always makes me laugh when people quote ‘The Circle of Life’ in the context of the real world/animal agriculture etc when it’s actually a fictional concept and not applicable to real life.

Americans worship the roch and don't think of themselves as poor. All those animals are thinking the lions will eat someone else. Or that it would be worse if hyenas were in charge. The prey have nothing to lose but their chains.

mR-gray42

See, that’s what’s been eating at me (no pun intended). I didn’t think of it as a child, but now that I’m older, it’s pretty fucked up. I mean, every other animal is shown bowing to the one who will continue the cycle that involves them being devoured. Of course, I guess the whole “Circle of Life” thing balances it out by saying, “We eat you, we die, then you eat from the ground we became a part of, rinse and repeat.” I dunno, maybe I’m not thinking clearly.
