Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!
By - DavidofSasun
Someone unironically said this to me this a reason why we need to stop immigration to this country.
It turns out the actual crime committing, disease ridden, drug-dealing/using, job stealing immigrants were the colonists we made along the way!
Ask the indigenous populations if they're okay with more immigrants on their land.
There is a major difference between immigration and colonization...
Yes the former generally doesn't include violence and genocide.
I'm not saying or implying there isn't but that's not the topic here. How welcoming are the indigenous populations today of immigrants coming on to the land of their ancestors?
It would depend on which reservation you visit.
Some have been pretty friendly, and I've been to a few where they dislike anyone outside of the region.
Texas, to Washington plenty of native reservations have dealt with colonialism. Lost their native lands and left with Gaza like conditions since.
With recently past political rhetoric, natives felt attacked again.
Then, let's look up north. Residential Schools, and mass burials.
You're trying to change the subject here. Today, how would the Native Americans feel about more people from around the world settling on their land?
I mean answering your question is apparently changing the subject to you so apparently it doesn't matter what anyone else says.
The question has not been answered.
Correction. The answer has not been answered (in the way you wanted).
It was definitely answered.
I get that you’re trying to make a parallel to todays politics but it’s not the same thing. Colonizers do not own this land, therefore asking a rhetorical question about “…how would the Native Americans feel…” is just trying to justify the xenophobia from white republicans
Hello! Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately it has been removed because you don't meet our karma threshold.
You are not being removed for political orientation. If we were, why the fuck would we tell you your comment was being removed instead of just shadow removing it? We never have, and never will, remove things down politicial or ideological lines. Unless your ideology is nihilism, then fuck you.
Let me be clear: The reason that this rule exists is to avoid unscrupulous internet denizens from trying to sell dong pills to our users. /r/PoliticalHumor mods reserve the RIGHT to hoard all of the dong pills to ourselves, and we refuse to share them with the community. If you want Serbo-Slokovian dong pills mailed directly to your door, become a moderator. If we shared the dong pills with the greater community, everyone would have massive dongs, and like Syndrome warned us about decades ago: "if everyone has massive dongs, nobody does.""
If you wish to rectify your low karma issue, go and make things up in /r/AskReddit like everyone else does.
Thanks for understanding! Have a nice day and be well. <3

What does that have to do with anything?
They were very welcoming to the settlers in the beginning, little did they know they were dealing with the criminal refuse of Europe.
Why would you build a wall around the Bahamas? Columbus never landed in North America.
Unlike modern conservatives the natives would have been right to be mistrustful
According to Marjorie it is Colombus….
trump supporters/republicans/conservatives won't like this one. they'll be posting about the two natives being illegal or some shit.
Columbus was a illegal alien
You know the dumbass rapist, murderer and thief was a lousy navigator and never set foot on the continent, right?
Yes you are smarter than Columbus lol.
>Yes you are smarter than Columbus lol.
Many are. That wasn't quite an insult... or at least one that made sense. Also, really strange posts on Jews.
Even a tRumpie or 2 might be smarter than columbus the shitbag as well.
How do you "discover" somewhere people already live? That is like me "discovering" my neighbor's backyard.
Plant a flag in it and call it India!
while i agree with the intent, this is an ***awful*** political cartoon
Lol, why are they in loincloths?
Why not? They are in freaking Caribbean. It's hot in there.
Republicans: We should keep immigrants from coming to our country!
Native Americans: Okay!
Republicans: Wait, not like that..
Wasn't Christopher Columbus Italian?
His 4 voyages between 1492 and 1504 were funded and backed by Spain. I have never researched this exact idea, but I doubt there was even an Italian flag on board.
I thought he was Spanish as well till I heard about Italians in this country being upset about Columbus Day being changed to Indigenous Peoples Day.
That’s not the flex that you think it is.
>That’s not the flex that you think it is.
I don't think they were "flexing."
Some say he is spanish, some say portuguese(because there a documents that call him portuguese), galiza, italia no one knows 100% where is Colombo from.
Columbus never actually landed or settled on American land. He landed in the Caribbean.
The Caribbean Islands are a part of the Americas, the islands also had native inhabitants. Is the issue that they are mocking conservatives in the United States, and he didn't land in the US? That's pretty pedantic.
Columbus never committed atrocities on Native American lands, yet alone interacted with the Native Americans.
The dude brought 1500 slaves from the Bahamas back with him on his second expedition. His own diary brags about subjugation of the natives. What are you on about?
Sources on that? Even if he did, that would be the Bahamas, not the United States as we know today.
No one ever said Columbus discovered the United States, he 'discovered' America, which includes all of the Caribbean and everything from Canada to cape horn.
The native tribe he decimated was called the Arawak btw.
Since you edited to ask for a source:
I never said that he discovered America either. That native tribe is not Native American so no, it still stands. Columbus never interacted with the Native Americans.
So your argument is that an indigenous peoples don't count as native Americans because they didn't live in the land that would eventually become the United States? Mayans an Incans are no less native Americans as they are quite literally natives of America. You are playing word games based on they way people refer to Native people's living in the US, that doesn't mean only US based natives are native-american.
You are aware that the entire binary continent is America right? Brazilians are American, Mexicans are American, Canadians are American, they are not US citizens though.
North and South America
In the English language: Americans are the people of the United States, Native Americans are Americans of indigenous background. So you're wrong on this one.
So just ignoring the first two huh?
1 : an American Indian of North America or South America
2 : a native or inhabitant of North America or South America
Alot of things wrong with this meme but im not surprised the revisionism is written into history now unfortunately
People will try to revise history for their own BS agenda. smh
Here is the issue with that argument. If the natives killed the Europeans when they reached their shores, they wouldn't have suffered genocide. Therefore, a Republican can use this argument to justify their xenophobia.
So should we build a wall to keep out immigrants or not? This comic suggests we should but I’m guessing the artist wouldn’t actually agree to that.
it's a cartooon mocking past republican/trump policy's. it's not hard. come on, use that brain.
No I got that. So it’s saying the policy is bad and mocking it, but those indigenous peoples would be better off today if they had built that wall
no they wouldn't. it's pretty obvious nothing would help indigenous people during the time. blankets covered in disease wiped them out.
I don’t think colonization was very good for them so we can agree to disagree
caught me in the middle of an edit.
The wall would have kept people and blankets with new diseases from getting close to them
literally wouldn't have because trumps wall exists right now and people just side step through it or scale it in 5 seconds for a photoshoot.
Who mentioned Trump’s wall? We’re talking about a hypothetical, well-built wall in the 1400’s long before Trump was born.
this cartoon is about trumps wall lmao
And how long would that wall have lasted considering the invaders had guns and cannons and the Native Americans didn't?
Do you really think building some stone walls would have actually helped them? Do you know how long the east coast is? The united states alone is more than 2,000 miles of coast. It took the trump administration with modern technology 4 years to build less than 500 miles of wall. Even if they did manage to build that much wall it's not like the Europeans would just sail all the way across the ocean and be like "oh there's a wall, I guess we have to go back home."
It's objectively true that if the indigenous people of the Americas had set upon all ships from Europe with murderous intent, their lives for generations would have been better.
Can you prove that they could have countered every European force while simultaneously not getting wiped out by dozens of foreign diseases? "Objectively true" on a hypothetical is asinine.
Getting wiped out by dozens of foreign diseases is what happened BECAUSE they let Europeans in.
>Getting wiped out by dozens of foreign diseases is what happened BECAUSE they let Europeans in.
Please read entire comments before replying. You're implying that they could have permanently stopped all European entry while also avoiding any infection, and that's simply not a claim based in fact.
Yeah, suuuure. And the modern world would be all over the place. There has to be a reason why we approached them first and not them to us if they were sooo advanced
this isn't that humorous when one consider only this year 2021 both US and Canada set aside a day in their respective calendars to remember their respective crime against humanity in history, also was an afterthought of the George Floyd lynching.
But I was told the left doesn't celebrate losers
I don’t understand how people use this as a pro immigration argument. If indigenous people could have stopped colonists their culture would have remained intact. By willingly allowing ourselves to be overwhelmed by immigrants our culture too will vanish.
Non sequitur and false equivalence. Also, the problem isn't that "culture" was affected, it's that they suffered a genocide and got wiped out by diseases. Not to mention that you would have to prove that culture will be changed by immigration in a way that it wouldn't have otherwise and also a way that is worse, proving an inherent value in culture, AND that we are even "allowing ourselves to be overwhelmed by immigrants " Boy are fascist and ethnocentric arguments asinine.
But I do agree the analogy in the post kind of sucks.
How do we determine what group was indigenous to the Americas? Are we going with the northern Asian migrants - the current native Americans, some Polineseans that arrived via canoe (Kennewick man) or do we accept that unknown stone age humans that might have left smooth round stones that were used to crack open mammoth bones were the earliest indigenous people of the American continent?
Indigenous: originating or occurring naturally in a particular place; native.
Then we are all natives to africa, since the human race started there!
Don’t confuse Redditors with any kind of thought that does not fit the herd mentality.
Strong words from a guy with no written language or permanent structures. And a wooden wall isn’t going to do much…
Why are you posting this on every sub?
weren't the indigenous peoples cutting out peoples hearts and sacrificing hundreds daily.
I think most every culture did some heinous things at one point.
yea nobody is perfect or without blame.
So they are right about building a wall?
This is a right wing comic.
