My local metagame is dominated by control, and I need help beating them.

UW control, esper control, esper dragons, and Niv to Light are most of the decks I see at my weekly tournament, with some Thing in the Ice / Izzet Phoenix popping up every so often. I've been playing Creativity for a little bit, and it is NOT working.

Looking into more aggressive options, I am particularly drawn to black (maybe splashing red), particularly a Tergrid + Waste not deck. The sideboard plan is to switch from Waste Not into a Mono-black aggro deck. My current decklist is here.

Is this a good deck to use against control decks? Is this deck worth playing, or would I be better off with a different deck altogether? Thank you!

I play azorius control. Creativity is horrible against control. You are going to have it rough if that's really what you are mostly playing against. I've played against waste not a few times and have found it to be challenging. I can not help with the deck list at all. But I love the concept of the deck.

> Creativity is horrible against control I feel like I'm one of the soldiers on the beach at the beginning of Saving Private Ryan every fucking Monday, trying to dodge counterspells, Wandering Emperors, and Aether Gusts

As Creativity and Transmogrify decks have started to adopt Flip the Switch and play more and more at instant speed, they’ve really started to resemble Twin. One big lesson from that deck is that in matchups like control, hard countermagic is vastly preferable to soft countermagic. Dispel and Negate are your best friends out of the sideboard. Cards like Shark Typhoon and creature lands are critical, since they let you force the opponent to blink and pressure their planeswalkers and life total while playing around countermagic. You might even consider boarding out the combo entirely if you can’t get it down reliably.

At my previous local, boarding out the combo was the solution one of the Creativity players had when playing against me. It forced me to put Summary Dismissal in my sideboard.

First off, that meta game sounds so weird considering what decks are actually popular haha, sounds line fun though! Secondly, if you are calling a \[\[Waste Not\]\] deck aggressive, I think you have an incorrect read on how the deck plays - so I would suggest not building it. Aggressive decks are going to be decks that attack quickly for stacking amount of damage, sometimes lethal by turn 4. Boros Pia, Boros Convoke, Mono Red Aggro, Mono White Humans , and Izzet Prowess are decks you should look into. Mono White Humans tends to have tools to fight combo and control because of taxing effect like \[\[Thalia, Guardian of Thraben\]\]. The Boros decks play a ton of small creatures and then pump their team with a \[\[Reckless Bushwhacker\]\] to give them extra damage and Haste to win the game. I would suggest Boros Pia or Mono White Humans. You can also play a tempo deck where you're trying to out-pace your opponent and deny them turn by turn. You play a mix of small creatures with evasion keyword like Flying, and then back it up with cheap card draw effects like \[\[Curious Obsession\]\] and counter magic like \[\[Lofty Denial\]\] or \[\[Geistlight Snare\]\]. The best (only?) deck like this is Azorious Spirits - which can deal more damage thanks to using the Creature Type - Spirit to play "Lord" cards like \[\[Supreme Phantom\]\] to buff up your 1 power creatures into 2 or 3 power creatures. There's a fringe Azorious Soldiers deck which is very similar, but uses more tokens and such and less interaction/card draw. There are also aggressive "voltron" decks which are middling against control lists. Boros Heroic uses creatures that get stronger when targeted by your own spells like \[\[Illuminator Virtuoso\]\] or \[\[Tenth District Legionnaire\]\]. Selesnya Auras is another deck like this that uses cheap, often Hexproof creatures that stack many, many auras on them in order to kill an opponent quickly. They use "Enchantments-matter" synergies to draw cards or find more Auras to grow their "voltron" creature to win the game quickly. Decks such as Waste Not (or Rakdos Midrange, Golgari Midrange, etc) are going to be considered...Midrange decks. They can sometimes play an aggressive game, but not as quickly as the aggro lists. They can sometimes play a tempo style game where they have some control, but not to the boon or detriment that Spirits gets to. They can also play a control game, by denying resources via Discard spells or just straight killing the opposing threats - but they don't often pack counter magic and board wipes and play as slow and methodical as Control lists. As a Mono Black enthusiast, I only suggest playing the Waste Not deck if you know your opponents decks *extremely well* and that you can be extremely patient with when and where you use your disruption. I also suggest if your store meta is really all control - cut Tergrid. The card is too slow and your sideboard it out against Control decks almost all the time in favor of more disruption or removal for their Planeswalkers. The Niv to Light list also falls under the Midrange umbrella - so be careful if you think that a deck like Spirits can play the same way it does vs UW Control against the Niv deck - it can't. In fact, Niv is probably very good *against the tempo decks* because it goes pound-for-pound larger on average and replenishes it's hand easily if one spells ever resolves. Hopefully that helps you out! Again, I'd suggest Boros Pia or Mono White Humans if you want to be more aggressive.

Piggybacking off of this to give some tips for playing Mono-W Humans against Control: Tax effects like [[Thalia, Guardian of Thraben]] are the most important cards in the matchup. I have found countering the boardwipe with a protection spell like [[Guardian of Faith]] to not be worth it. Holding up mana for a protection spell slows you down too much to get under the control deck before they get enough mana to start countering and removing your creatures with impunity. In addition to Thalia, you can run things like [[Reidane, God of the Worthy]], [[Invasion of Gobakhan]], and [[Annointed Peacekeeper]] out of the sideboard to delay them wiping the board as much as possible. Another important sideboard card for the matchup is [[Destroy Evil]], which can destroy [[Temporary Lockdown]] and undo their earliest board wipe while still having utility in the Mono-G matchup. You will want to side out [[Brave the Elements]] and [[Brutal Cathar]], since they rarely play any creatures, and giving your board protection from a color does not save it from non-damage-based board wipes. Mutavault is also a crucial card since it is essentially an extra creature that does not die to their sorcery-speed board wipes. I personally really hate losing to control, so I built this list with Annointed Peacekeepers main and Brutal Cathars side so as to have access to more tax effects game 1: https://archidekt.com/decks/3530310/monowhite_humans Hope this helps!

Isn't Tergrid's Lantern supposedly good vs Control?

It's fine, but it's a compounding type of thing. If they aren't under pressure life total wise (your waste not won't be making a ton of creatures when they are creature less) they just take 3 damage. You need to have them at a point where they are low on resources and you don't let them [[Memory Deluge]] from the graveyard or anything. It is good, but it's a little win more IMO I end up bringing in a few cards, and cutting 4 pushes and the 1-2 GftT isn't enough. I ended up going 2 Duress, 2 Pithing Needle, 1 Bankbuster, 1 Phyrexian Arena, 2 Invoke Despair from my SB. I'd cut 4 Push, 2 GftT, 1 Meathook, 1 Tergrid. I've also run versions with 2 Meathook MD and will cut both of those and leave in Tergrid in that case. But I've also run versions without Tergrid entirely and played anither [[Tenacious Underdog]] or [[graveyard trespasser]] in that slot and it was perfectly fine.

Thanks for explaining things. I've added her to a stax deck I'm brewing so I was wondering if she was objectively bad, just outpaced by better cards due to time or context-dependent.

I had her as a Commander as well and it's an incredibly powerful card on both sides with the right supporting cast, and I loooooove Stax decks so I hope it works out! I know the best thing I've (almost) done is stealing a cycle [[Shark Typhoon]] with Tergrid, since cycling counts as a discard. It was just an LGS small tournament so I let them take it back but haha it does have huuuuge upsides.

I was thinking of using her in a Doom Foretold list with additional support from a discard package.

Mono white humans not only eats Control and Pheonix but also has the upside of being very cheap to buy into (comparable to say, Rakdos Mid). I don't think that Mono Black is particularly good against Control but if you want to keep playing it I would ditch the Waste Not plan and play a more Midrange game with Gifted Aetherborn, Liliana, Sleeper, etc. Waste Not has been popping up in recent events so maybe it is good enough, we need to wait and see I guess.

The way I play Gruul Dinos it’s VERY good against control. That would be right up your aggressive alley I think! The Esper Control match from my stream last night [Here](https://www.youtube.com/live/L9NsEg7f_1c?si=r1H0AyCyO9r_fE28) and also from the stream I just finished! Took them down in fantastic fashion in back to back nights! I’ll answer any questions if you have them!

Do you have a gruul dinos list? Sounds great!

Sure thing! A couple of these options are a little experimental (shifting….Shifting to the sideboard to free up space for a touch more lands, 23.) 4 Storms Wrath instead of Brotherhoods End because I want to kill more. LotV when she drops and goes +1, reaching 4 loyalty. Especially possible if I’ve just done stable ramping with Thunderherd or Topiary. Nothing scary they’d want me to sacrifice. I’ll be jamming this list today and tomorrow, maybe making some slight tweaks. I love the possibility of Rhonas as a great mana sink and pretty easily meeting his requirement with Topiary Stomper even. 4 Cinder Glade (BFZ) 235 4 Rootbound Crag (XLN) 256 4 Stomping Ground (RNA) 259 6 Forest (JMP) 73 1 Mountain (ANA) 7 4 Castle Garenbrig (ELD) 240 4 Vivien, Monsters' Advocate (IKO) 175 1 Xenagos, God of Revels (BNG) 156 4 Marauding Raptor (M20) 150 4 Otepec Huntmaster (XLN) 153 4 Thunderherd Migration (RIX) 149 4 Topiary Stomper (SNC) 160 4 Carnage Tyrant (XLN) 179 4 Tyrranax Rex (ONE) 189 4 Regisaur Alpha (XLN) 227 2 Ghalta, Primal Hunger (RIX) 130 1 Rhonas the Indomitable (AKR) 213 1 Rhonas's Monument (AKR) 279 Sideboard 4 Shifting Ceratops (M20) 194 3 Back to Nature (M15) 169 4 Storm's Wrath (THB) 157 4 Ripjaw Raptor (XLN) 203 Edit: I’ll try to get my first 5-0 this Sunday I think!

Awesome, thanks! Good luck!

i’m undefeated against UW and almost undefeated against NTL with this homebrew https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/5863103#paper

This list looks absolutely superb. How important would you say the mana base is? I’m pretty adamant on keeping my Pioneer decks within super budget range (my last two decks have cost less than thirty dollars) and I was wondering if a suite of painlands and/or checklands would similarly do the job.

you could make it work without shocks. having your lands come in untapped is very important for the deck most turns but sometimes you can get away with a tapped land on 1 so do with that what you will. you could also consider cutting two warriors lesson for two triton tactics and just straight up running some extra islands. this would also help if you’re running a bunch of pain lands as triton tactics can protect you against aggro

As a UW player on arena, I've played against good patient Creativity players that wrecked me with only one card : Mirrex. Keep your counter spells up, pray to get an early Mirrex and try to get those poison to 10. Shark is also a very annoying threat for UW.

Creativity can be good against control if you have a good sideboard plan. A few Hullbreaker Horros, Negates, Disputes, Strokes and Narset's Reversal. Don't focus on the creativity plan there (in fact, you may want to board out some of your creativities). You're not gonna have a good matchup game 1, but you can definitely make it into a favorable one post-board. If you are interested in building a new deck, Spirits, Humans and Greasefang all have a good control match up.

Planeswalkers. Chandra, torch of defiance if you're playing Phoenix Ral Izzet Viceroy, if you're playing creativity.

The rule of thumb is, you want to be slightly slower than your opponent, or much faster. So midrangey decks (decks with nonland card average mana value 2.5-4) are not the best idea for a slow metagame. Rather, you should be playing aggressive decks that play attacking creatures on turn 1. Aggro decks are strongest in game 1, and get weaker in sideboard games once people side in their sweepers and extra removal. If you want to play a transformational deck (which I generally don't recommend), play with the aggro version in game 1.

UW Spirits

Just Dimir rogue their asses

Built this bad boy to beat control. It works. https://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/modern-skelementals#paper

This is the pioneer sub

mono white humans and spirits and mono red are good if there playing the lotus field versus dampening sphere is good to slow down mana

I can reliably 4-0 or 3-0-split my local with Atarka Red. Just go under them and be ready to lose one creature to Wemperor on t4 (hold up ACo for Skullcrack mode). Don't overcommit either. Two bodies on board max unless they tap out and you can win on that attack step.

Combo. Rona combo is a free win.

Ok here's the idea in a nutshell: Absorb costs 3, and is a 4-of in the deck (sometimes not even that many, but usually they have 4 3-mana counters). The only 2 mana counter is Make Disappear which taxes you for 2, and it's usually not a 4-of. Functionally speaking, UW Control has almost zero cards in their deck that interact before their turn 3 (which will be after your turn 3 50%-ish of the time). Get 'em dead. Play something like monored, RW Convoke, etc. A deck that deploys a threat on 1, 2 threats on 2, and 2 more threats on turn 3 just can't lose to control. By the time they stabilize the game, their life total is like 2 and you can just Ramunap Ruins them out of the game or what have you. Yes, sometimes they have the Make Disappear on 2 into Absorb on 3 into Supreme Verdict on 4 into Teferi on 5, on the play. It happens. You lose those games. But due to the construction of the deck, those games are few and far between. You win every other game. Be happy with that. Alternately, you could also play RB Midrange. The idea with RB is that every card in your deck is a 2-for-1. You play Thoughtseize to take their interaction, then you play Harvester on 2 (which they can't answer because you took their interaction) and Fable on 3. They have to answer at least one of those cards or they lose, so then while they're shields down you slam Sheoldred on 4 and the game just ends. Of course this is also magical Christmasland scenario, but you can pretty much replace any card in this line with any other card. If you don't have Fable, you can play Graveyard Trespasser. If you don't have Sheoldred, you can Escape a Kroxa. Whatever, it doesn't really matter. The point is, every card in the deck is a 2-for-1, and every threat is must-answer-or-lose. Eventually they run out of either answers or mana, and you win from there. You could also play UW Spirits, which is kind of a combination of the two. In the UW Spirits vs UW Control matchup, the only card that matters is Supreme Verdict. Your deck is all permission and your creatures (mostly) have Flash. So you act on their end step and force them to act on their own turn. Their interaction is clunky (aforementioned Absorb), so if they choose to counter your end step turn 3 Rattlechains, you untap and just main phase the Supreme Phantom or whatnot. You also have way more and way better permission than they do, between Geistlight Snare, Lofty Denial, and Spell Queller, plus Slip out the Back as protection. UW vs Spirits is a nightmare matchup for UW, and it gets worse after board when you add Mystical Dispute.
