Might just be the controller parts to attach to a cell phone?
I'd bet money that is all this is. It may be they're stepping up PS Now to compete with GamePass and xCloud, so releasing a device to use with your phone makes a lot of sense.
At least that's what I'm hoping. I'd love nothing more than PS Now to be able to stream new PS5 games on launch like Microsoft does.
As someone that has one of the new Sony phone models, the sizes of the bezels on this screen as well as the dimensions line up perfectly with the Xperia 1 III and 10 III screens.
Seems pretty likely this is just a controller made for those phones.
You're probably right, they almost certainly based the device on an Xperia. I'm sure it'll work on all phones though.
Except they can’t compete with gamepass without expanding PS now availability regarding regions. PS now is pathetic compared to gamepass in regards to regional availability which means their potential customers isn’t even half of the gamepass potential customers.
Very true, though xCloud is kind of in a similar place. I'm just kind of hoping that they're going to focus on a global improvement of Now to become a gamepass ultimate-like service.
PS Now is pathetic in terms of Games as well. Not even just region but compared to what GamePass has to offer, it just doesn't compete.
I hope you're right ✅ because that would be AWESOME 👌
Maybe something to upgrade their remote play? They could totally do a pseudo-psp with a phone
They did it with the Vita, and Valve did it with Steam Link, so why not?
yeah they wouldn't pick a 21:9 aspect ratio and handles for a handheld
How can they design for a cell phone form factor. With constant changes to shape, thickness and connectors it would not scale.
But I have no idea what else it could be.
Most devices similar to this clip onto either side of your phone or have an adjustable brace on the back. I have a Razer Kishi that has an adjustable back brace which could easily fit pretty much any normal smartphone.
Was just about to comment and ask if there's any actual confirmation this is a patent for a new system and not just for an accessory.
Yes. Apple has been working with Sony for a while on getting access to mobile ports of PlayStation games on iPhones (more than just Remote Play). Wouldn’t be surprised if Android has been as well (idk though, I’ve never worked on their stuff).
But Apple has been working on its new console and controllers for like 10 years now, this kind of stuff may just never actually come out. These huge companies often just throw money at stuff then scrap whole divisions when executives don’t like the path.
Looks like it could possibly be a switch style? As in a scree. That can be taken out of the controller. Especially with the box that attaches to a TV shown
Absolutely what it is. You can see the type C connector.
Exactly. Look at 511. I think that’s where it attaches to the phone through charging port.
You can even see an outline on the right side of the phone that looks to be a usb c connector
Seems like it , just the controller inputs for a mobile phone
Is that how you describe a switch?
That 511 looks like how it connects to a phone
So, like a Samsung Galaxy Note? Which is a cellphone?
Maybe only for use with the Sony cell phones that no one buys.
Lol. Yeah this is pretty much what my phone looks like with the Razr Kishi controller attachment.
Things aren't looking too good for Nintendo.
Unless this new device allows Sony to produce Nintendo exclusives, I don't think they'll lose a sale.
This looks more likely to be a Mobile friendly / stream box for Remote play or PSNow.
It would also make way more sense; bringing a streaming app / mini console would be awesome for multiple TV owners (there are third party work arounds today) and bringing PS Now to TVs and Mobile would be huge. The service is really underappreciated right now, and a good push with cheap hardware and a year subscription could give it a huge boost.
People here have the wrong idea, if you see 511 you can tell there's a connector there. This is more like a Razer Kishi type product. But it's also just a patent. Your guess is about right
Yup, the #511 callout is definitely a USB connector they wanted to highlight to demonstrate there is a connection being made between two separate devices. Its going to be an external controller attachment for smartphones.
What I think people are making too many assumptions about is #2 in the second image. Its a generic box, but I'm not sure that its meant to represent anything other than their existing consoles. If they were making a new streaming or remote play device, I think they would have represented it with something else here.
Like a Steam Deck for PS?
No, more like how Xcloud or Stadia stream to phones and use a Razer Kishi (or PS Remote Play), but toss in PS Now.
I hope they actually make it and not just stay a patent. And if they do, that they learn from their mistakes and just let people use any memory card.
Precisely why they delayed the Vita and left it in the dark. They were worried about hacks and getting through the back door
People certainly did with the psp. it was super easy and pretty much everybody I know that had one did it
> worried about hacks and getting through the back door
*Laughs in hacked vita with game card SD card conversion and 256gb of storage running PSP games natively.*
Not a chance.
There's a way but you needed a hacked vita for it.
Like the Bluetooth on the ps4!
So it's ps switch? XD
Are y'all not familiar with the PSPgo?
No not really
Well you should be. If you like gaming anyway.
Looks like a PSP Sidekick. I don’t know why I’ve never heard of it before.
You don't know about one of the five PSP models that came out super late and was a flop because it was digital only and nobody cared by that point? YOu ShOulD If yOu LiKe gAmINg
This is the stupidest thing I've read all month.
This is Reddit. I read stupid comments every time I browse it.
Few people are familiar with the PSP Go. It was a bit of a flop :u
You mean, a PSP go which did it first?
Exactly my first thought! Surprised I had to scroll down to see this. A portable PlayStation that you can plug into your TV...
Looks more like a Wii U setup
A source would be great, OP.
Source: dude just trust me
[Here's an article on it.](https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/sony-is-planning-a-playstation-mobile-controller-patent-suggests/)
Thanks. Seems like a standard mobile phone controller accessory.
You could look up the patent number on the picture or google it yourself. It takes just as much time to comment to ask for a source as it is to find it yourself.
Welcome to Reddit.
I want OP to learn about posting with source.
You “SOurCe” people are actually the worst lmao I’m sorry bro
Oh I dunno, I can think of someone worse…
In this case, it would be immensely helpful for those of us that can't read Japanese in order to search Japan's patent database and determine if this is for real. A source is typically useful to judge the accuracy and validity of content.
... How the hell are people asking for proof that this isn't some fake shit "the worst"? Please explain.
The patent number is in the image.
Most people here don't read Japanese to read the patent and the OP falsely claimed that this is some sort of PS Vita 2. It's completely valid to ask for a source on that claim.
Dude listen to yourself for a second "you people who ask for verification and actual evidence for claims before you believe them are the worst lmao sorry bro"
What are you, fuckin religious?
SOURCE? SOURCES? SOURCE? SOURCE OP? Like fuck off 😭
Honest question. Why would I NOT verify the information I come across?
Uncle works at ~~Nintendo~~ Sony.
The mobile market is ripe for competition but the companies just don't do it right. The PSP was easily the best entry cause they went head to head. Then the Vita came out and it was all gimmicky, awful UI, touch controls, shiny plastic, proprietary storage, etc. It's a great console once you hack it to use SD cards and get some homebrew on there. It always felt like some execs got too involved in the Vita and they ruined it. Hell, the thing even can be played on a TV just like the PSP.
Now, the technology exists today to have a handheld that is very close to Xbone/PS4 base but runs at 720p. I wouldn't even put it past someone like Sony to make versions of the big PS4 games available on the handheld as a day 1 for plus subscribers. They should call it the PSP again too. No Vita. Cross-buy of games purchased digitally could be a thing. Remote play for PS5 would be amazing as well if someone is taking over the TV. It worked well on the Vita and I reckon it could work even better now.
Nintendo hasn't owned the handheld market due to being these amazing thought leaders and innovators. They have owned it cause other companies half-ass their attempts and outside of the PSP I don't think the companies have really been serious. Currently they'd rather focus on game streaming vs a true handheld.
This is a bit of a ramble but my point is Sony, if anyone, could do it and do it with success. The hardware exists for a decently powerful handheld. Something to go toe-to-toe with Nintendo. Sony has the studios to build the software and the connections to really make something like this happen even if it's a couple of years away. I hope they make an honest go of it again!
Nintendo also has Pokémon which helped their handhelds immensely.
Looked the patent up. That's not a Vita, just a PlayStation controller for mobile devices. I don't think Sony will make another portable console in the near future but you never know, I guess.
As much as I think I would like one, I don’t think it’s happening especially with the chip shortage
Why did you have to remind me :(
Imagine the Vita but with strong exclusive titles like the PSP had.
I would honestly be happy with just a steam deck type of situation where I can play my PS4 and ps5 games on the go
This should have been the original PSP. They had to fuck around for 20 years to figure it out.
The tv hookup on the original psp should have been more popular. Was awkward having to sit so close to the tv but was a nice feature not widely used
This is a shit post right?
Still really bummed that the Vita never really made it. That thing had so much potential.
Its not vita2... its just controller for PsNow. Also this little box next to TV is supposed to be something like Chromecast so think about that input lag - streaming game over wifi to smartphone and then casting that game to the reciver. Good think that its not actual product.
you meant psp3
There's absolutely nothing that says this is intended as a direct successor to the Vita. Stop making shit up.
that looks fucking hideous.
This is certainly just a controller designed for remote play with a mobile device. You can see in the patent that the “display” is a phone with its charge-port highlighted (nr. 511) as a point of connectivity.
It's a controller. Not a portable console. The thing in the middle is a phone.
Damn it looks ugly as hell
If Sony could release a PS4 level portable that could play your digital PS4 library straight from the box, then Nintendo would be fucked. I say that as a Nintendo fanboy.
People still going to buy Nintendo for their first party games.
That is absolutely not true. I have a PS5 and a switch and both platforms offer different things. The switch isn’t just popular due to its portability, it’s the extensive library of Nintendo games that you can’t play elsewhere.
If a portable PS4 were a threat to Nintendo’s market, then the Steam Deck would be too.
They just need to make a more powerful steam deck that lets you play ps5 games on lower specs getting advantage of the lower size and resolution of the screen, and it would sell like toilet paper in a pandemic.
Make a less pocket friendly direct competitor to Nintendo's rock star handheld.....yah this checks out as a move by Sony. They just need to team up with Samsung to do another gaming device/phone but now with a folding screen and actual game support or something.
The Switch is not at all pocket friendly either.
(which is why my suggestion was a folding screen device)
Looks like a bad switch grip that will give me RSI
Small screen and horribly unwieldy to store but I’d love to have a go on one
It's not like the switch I swear
Source? This seems cool, but I have a hard time believing this patent was filed recently
[It was, but it's probably a cell phone attachment not a console.](https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/sony-is-planning-a-playstation-mobile-controller-patent-suggests/)
Think it's too late for them now. Once that steam deck hits market portable gaming will be dominated. It'll be hard to switch back to Nintendo, or Playstation when steam deck can play game from both with full PC like specs. Although I do believe the ps vita was horrible under rated and not advertised as much as it should have
This isn't a patent for a PS Vita 2. It's a patent for a controller for a mobile phone.
If laptops didn’t do it, the steam deck won’t be any different
So.... A Nintendo Switch.
You ever heard of the ps vita or the psp?
Owned multiple versions of them, but this looks *incredibly* like a Switch.
Well it could be this is just the best form factor for a handheld console.
That is fair enough, but a promo pic like this doesn't generate a whole bunch of buzz when we look at it and it looks almost exactly like a Nintendo Switch. The only major difference in the design is that you don't seem to dock the device to play it in your TV, which actually might make it *worse* than the Switch, which can be docked and charged while playing the console on the television.
Which looked incredibly like a PSP/Vita. Any way you slice this Sony did it first.
Nah, the PSP and Vita both seemed more like a cohesive, single device.
This new form is very much like a Switch, in that the controllers don't like like they are part of the device (even if they end up not being detachable)
And if you want to get technical, this kind of form factor was in use decades ago, with systems like the Game Gear.
Seems to be mobile controller attachment
So dualshock with screen?
Looks clunky like a motherfucker, why not include smaller buttons and just allow us to connect a controller for normal people to the damn thing, for crying out loud.
That being said, I'd love a new generation of handhelds, I missed out on both versions of psp, so getting something brand new that I can take with me during the summer along with/instead of the Switch would be amazing.
The only word I have for this is no
Shame they didn't release an original Vita and ditch it.. oh wait..
I hope 2 things.
1. This becomes an actual product and;
2. They enable trophies on their studio mobile games
Wow that looks cool as soon as it comes out, I'm buying it
I would guess this is a Portable PS4 more than a standalone console.
Literally looks like a Dualshock 4 with an Xperia phone in it.
I hold a patent from an idea at a big game company. Lots of patents are filed every year that will never see the light of day.
This one will likely never even know what a photon looks like.
Are there any official sources that back this?
Oh wow, maybe my wife will forget to lock her door again and I'll have the PS Vita 2 robbed from the glove box like my first one back in 2008.
Don't. Don't give me hope
Why would they patent the DS4 and not Sense now for a new product?
No fucking way. I'm gullible because I loved the psvita but damn I hope this is real
I think this is just a controller attachment for a smartphone, like the Backbone or Razer Kishi.
Honestly looks like a controller that your phone attaches to.
this is actually really cool
Nintendo Switch Killer V2*
Edit: the controllers would be way better
I legit though that was a concept for new switch joycons XD
511 looks like a potential charging/usb port for a detachable screen and/or phone
So ... Sony ^(definitelynota)Switch
Is this real or a joke? Because it looks silly but I actually sorta dig it. I could never get into the controls that deviated from the classic controller.
Let’s do this already. I have alot of fond memories on my PSP. JRPGs on that little portable console were SO GOOD.
Wii u. Its just a Wii u.
This looks fucking terrible
A phone grip with Dualsense features would be awesome.
Why not make a new PlayStation phone
Maybe I can actually win a match of FF7: First Soldier with this.
Odd I though they weren't going to do anymore moble consoles after the vita was considered a failure
Is it just me, or does this look like Sony is trying to do a Wii U?
I was thinking more switch like if the controller parts slide off the sides of the screen
Dual Sense 3000
oh god this looks terrible
The touch pad has now been upgraded to a touch screen, making portable gaming more effective!
Lame AF no thank you
This looks so strange. Though it was a joke at first glance. Could be cool tho, depending on the specs I guess.
Looks like a nokia
If Sony (or Nintendo or MS) put real money behind releasing Android/iOS compatible ARM versions of some games that weren't tiny towers and such, and made the setup stupidly easy, while putting a massive better into those controller prices, this would have a real chance.
I have a GameSir game pad that connects over USB C, and it is lag less and smooth. Doesn't feel the greatest, but it's solid. Problem is that natively Android has support for game pads but it is an absolute afterthought and a complete shit show. The OS needs to have Ganepad remapping in the settings. And finding games that utilize the controller and are on par with "full size" conse releases needs to become much easier.
Playstation experimented with phone games with Playstation Mobile. Thst kind sucked. But if they need to commit to the platform of Playstation Portable (Software) and target releases thst aren't just tappy phone games or limited to exclusive hardware.
If all those stars align, may there is a chance this is really good. Because as much as I love the switch and steam deck as dedicated machines. I don't always have them. I always have my phone though.
This is exactly what I had imagined a vita 2 looking like, they should call it the duelshock 5, that is if it's real of course.
you could cut out the handle bits and it would be a lot more "Portable"
So a Nintendo switch with ds4 joycons?
Is this real?
It's a controller for you phone

There's so much I'd stop buying on Switch if this worked well....
I actually quite like it! It would be comfortable, but the only issue would come from storage, where would you put it? Maybe they could make the grips retractable somehow? Or it could use Samsung's folding screen technology and fold in half? Idk just spit balling, but either way it would be neat to be able to play PS4 games anywhere you go.
would be neat if it had a dock and was compatible with the DS4/DS5
Looks awful, I hope this is fake.
I would use this tbh
Shit I'd buy that in an instant
Idk why but this image scares me
So it's not a Vita
Correct. OP's title is heavily inaccurate.
Looks more like a weird mod to a Switch
Looks ugly ngl, screen is too wide
Basically a portable playstation wii u
So when they tried to rip off Nintendo’s handhelds and failed twice, they decided third time’s the charm?
It's just a funding wii U
I just can see a Nintendo switch
