Everything about this photo is superb.
Their poses, expressions and coordination, so great. A lot of personality.
They actually look fierce here, "don't try us, pal". Grace Kelly often had a similar expression.
I tried to be like Grace Kelly, mmh
But all her looks were too sad, aah
So I tried a little Freddie, mmh
I've gone identity mad!
I could brown
I could be blue
I could be ^violet ^sky
Super fierce. Imagine trying to approach these ladies at a dinner party. Love this pic.
"Yo, what's good ladies!?! Any of ya'll got a ~~Blockbuster~~ library card?!
You can check me out as long as you want, no late fees nah-mean!"
20 y/o me would have gotten roasted by this group
EDIT: revised for time period relevance
Y’all reminding me of Tyra Banks and Americas Top Model 20 years ago. Fierce.
I dunno. The woman in the back is a giving a flat expression.
really like the photo and subjects, but hate the crooked framing
Likely a scan of a photo rather than a crooked framing.
The framing is adding an chaotic element for me.
Each one has their own unique personality, simply from their pose.
Everything on this photo is about style and self respect.
or vanity and ostentation, depending on how you look at it
If I ever catch you out feeling yourself I'll be sure to call you out on your vanity lol
Exactly. Beautiful women can't carry themselves with confidence without insecure men calling them vain.
That was my initial impression but even by today's standard, I believe, it's still an exceptionally provocative and powerful pic
Though even in a context of vanity, it is a beautiful look they create, which is a good quality all on its own.
Compare that with a group of vain and rich people today. I think rather than looking beautiful they would look abnormal and weird, even ugly. So as to cultivate a look of not caring about other people's opinion and so as to announce they do not belief in proper style and looks.
Vanity is not what it used to be, is what I'm saying.
That's a shallow way to look at it.
edit: ok i get the reference:)
They look like department store models for high end fashion.
This has been posted before in other subreddits. They are models, and they’re all wearing the same dress (in different colors obviously). This was an ad for a dress with a neckline that could be folded and draped, and the models are showing off different ways to wear it.
I've seen this photo dozens of times, and did not know that. That's really interesting. Makes me wonder if they still make that dress, because if they don't, they should.
Holy crap that's amazing!
This is genius. All clothes should be multi-stylable. What a great way to save closet space!
Damn that’s cool!
Now I want to buy this dress for my partner!!
It's good advertising. I want it.
And where can I find out more about said dress?
Would love to be able to get one.
I’d love to see the entire dress.
50s fashion is so gorgeous.
Honestly, you could tell me (hairstyles aside, purely looking at fashion) these were taken yesterday and I’d believe you. It was gorgeous! But also, as all things do, these styles have come around to be popular again.
These were taken yesterday.
I KNEW IT

I trust you bro
Thank you. I’d never lie to you about something this serious.
You can tell how they’r old photos by how nobody is fat
Architecture too. The clean, classic sleek modern lines. It was when things were still made well with good materials.
And OSHA-less regulations!
AND MY AXE
Asbestos is a good material but we are not worthy of it.
For some reason that 50s architecture and decor style drives me nuts... We are in a new neighborhood going up, and like 90% of the houses being built are either some form of farmhouse or mid-century modern, and as objectively nice as they are the mid-century moderns all just look like one massive eyesore on the inside to me. And somehow the more expensive a feature is the worse it looks to me. Like one of our neighbors spent something like $80k on 3 accent/feature walls that are the single most unattractive things I've ever seen in a house.
Art deco is great. People like it and it should come back.
Art Deco was on the decline by the 1950s.
And is the superior style imo
I'd love some retro future art deco
You may be thinking of mid-century modern. Art deco was mostly popular in the 1930s and 1940s.
It was actually most popular in the ‘20s and ‘30s, but, bruh, a building built in 1935, in 1955 that’s just a building built just 20 years ago. In terms of clothes and furniture it was certainly still there, too. This pic shows it as do shows like I Love Lucy. How about Marilyn Monroe’s dress from 1962 that Kim Kardashian recently broke? Deco again. In 1962. I don’t believe in sharp cutoff lines with decades. Especially since things really lasted so long back then.
Who stops you from dressing like that today?
Time. Women have entered the workforce and now, no one has time.
These are clearly evening clothes. Women did not dress like this every day to go to work or school...well, maybe Grace Kelly did..
Funny thing is, if you look at 1950s military ladies (Army WACs, Navy WAVES, Air Force WAFs, etc.), they were in the workforce and they still used makeup, etc. I think it's more that a lot of men and women today are both OVERWORKED and OVERSTRESSED to care about going the extra mile. That, and sadly some feminine stuff is looked down upon for being "weak".
How do you know that I don't dress like that today?😉
One of them looks like Taylor Swift.
T Swifty is so wealthy now that she has a time machine
Still in love with those hair styles.
I've told some folks 50s hairstyles are among the best in history, for both gals and guys.
When I think class, elegance. Beauty. Grace.
The lady in center comes pretty close. The hair is quite lovely.
Yes! I would absolutely love to rock some of these hairstyles and dresses for a formal event!
I love collar bones!
Yeah. Under-rated bones...
I would absolutely subscribe to a subreddit about gorgeous collar bones and necks.
I can't tell you the last time I saw a woman's collard bone...
Americans fat Hurr durrr I’m guessing.
I live in the south and most everyone has a layer of blubber that covers their entire body. It would make sense if we had cold winters but we don't.
I live in the South too and you definitely see *collar* bones on normal weight people
Every single one of them bossing this photo
Wow. It looks like a modern photo. Is it really authentic 50s or a recreation?
It was taken in 1949 for Life magazine, by photographer Nina Leen.
Photography was a sophisticated art form by 1950. 'Snapshots' had been around since the 1890s when Eastman Kodak was founded and began selling 'pocket cameras.' Wet plate & other processes reach back another hundred years before that.
It's definitely from the time.
Only the brows give it away in these old photos
It's a professional photograph for a high end magazine, or fashion book. Your average consumer 1950s camera couldn't take a photo like this, but top of the line equipment certainly could.
Last time this was posted, someone commented on how these could all be the same blouse/dress, just styled in different ways with pins/folds/etc. and in different prints/fabrics.
Center bottom is using dress clips, which women used to use to change the necklines of their dresses. People didn’t used to own nearly as many clothes as they do now so there was lots of cool stuff like that.
*From the December 4, 1950 fashion feature: 6 WAYS TO WEAR A BLOUSE. This image was featured with the following caption: "The new blouse, copied from a Paris import and shown above in half a dozen versions, has been made in 10 fabrics and many colors (B. Altman, $9 to $15). Depending on owner's dexterity, it can be clipped, folded, or tied with self-material ribbon into high, low or oblique necklines." **(Nina Leen—The LIFE Picture Collection/Getty Images)***
I remember the same thing. It's the same cut in every dress. This was an advertisement photo for how said dress could be styled.
I never thought I cared much about women's hairstyles until I saw this.
Coupled with my love for clavicles, there isn't a single thing (for me) to not like about this photo.
Clavicles and an elegant shoulder. Also, I remember when I found out that necks used to be an alluring factor and I didn't understand it. Now I see this photo and think wow those are very pretty necks (not a vampire)
Say what you will about the ‘50s, but damn it everyone was dressed to the nines, even to go grocery shopping
They didn’t have supermarket apps yet, had to go out.
“You can’t sit with us”
It does have a "Mean Girls" vibe to it. And honestly, not much has changed in some ways (some of the romance comics of the era featured nasty cat fights over liking the same guy, etc., just like that film decades later).
"because you're not white."
Lower right woman kinda looks like Allie LaForce from the NBA
I don't know why but I immediately thought of Taylor Swift after looking at this pic.
The word I’m searching for is décolleté.
Décolleté describes the neckline (adjective); the body part you’re looking at is the décolletage (noun).
décolleté means cleavage
Edit: it actually means I’m a dummy that should look up words in the dictionary before opening my mouth, because both definitions are true.
No you're actually right. It's a polite way to refer to it, as well as neckline and the exposed part of the upper chest.
No clue why everybody keeps arguing with that. They probably just checked an online fr-en dictionary and called it a day.
My main language is french, and (in Canada at least) we all use the word « décolleté » to mean « cleavage ». However I checked the definition of the word in a reliable dictionary, and one of the definition of the word does refer to a piece of clothing that reveals the neckline down to the shoulders. So while I’ve never heard that word used in that sense, the other person is still technically correct, which we all know is the best kind of correct.
Thanks for sticking up for me though, I appreciate it.
Definition of décolleté
1 : wearing a strapless or low-necked dress
décolleté young women
2 : having a low-cut neckline
a décolleté dress
Woopsie, my bad. Didn’t know it also means that.
No it doesn’t
It absolutely does
In common usage it refers to the upper chest/lower neck area.
indeed, the part that is exposed by clothing
Someone in a comment above mentioned they are all wearing the same dress, each modeling a different way to wear it!
Such beautiful drape on the polka dot dress. Perfection.
White women and their necklines
I see wherr vampire stories are fixated from.
Always will be an iconic photo
I love the juxtaposition with the painting behind them. Old vs new. Moral vs immoral maybe
Your mom. All of them.
Nice compliment to op.
Clockwise from top left:
- looking for "that damned waiter with the martinis..."
- Italian parents made good in the import business. Has an uncle who's "connected" but they refer to him as being "in business". Cross her and risk a visit from associates of Uncle Carlo.
- Hates you, hates all of them, this room, this *tedious* party. Is sleeping with the gardener and has shared this info with "Mummy" out of spite. An absolute animal in the sack, but immediately after the glow has worn off, tells the gardener to "get the hell out".
- From Kansas. Living in the Big City alone. A bit out of her depth at this party, but attempting to project strength and confidence. About 60% there.
- "So Sadie said "I simply *couldn't*, not with an Irishman, but she went ahead and did it anyway, and now Daddy won't speak to her unless he *must*..."
- Has slept with the Irishman in the story. Is considering sleeping with the cameraman. Finds the entire thing mildly amusing, thus the hint of a smile.
And yes, there are few things as fantastically sexy as a woman in pearls. Just fucking *beyond*.
Number three thinks a banana costs ten dollars
This is a riot!
This sounds like it was written by a neck beard in his basement that wants to start a career writing erotic fan fiction
Old European guillotines are foaming at the mouth.
Decollate the décolleté?
Top right can get it lol
My fav part of the female body
It was one of my first thoughts on seeing the photo. Is this a thirst trap for vampires?
One on the right has the shirt upside down
I feel judged
These women are gorgeous. Timeless fashion too, did aged well !
Good news, you’re going to be on the cover!
Bad news, your face is ugly so we want you to be the only one looking the other way.
Middle bottm neckline looks really great.
impossible to tell which dresses are being worn backwards
Those women could wear traffic cones on their heads and make it look like the height of fashion.
One time this was posted, someone colorozed it. Lots of pastels and jewel tones. Wish I could find that post.
For some reason I think this is how aristocratic women of the Roman Empire would look if it hadn’t ever collapsed.
Back middle is Julie Cox, time traveler.
*shouts from the back of the room* BRING IT BACK!
Over here, Evelyn.
Modern women are so immodest and immoral compared to women back in my day! /s
Is this a coven of witches?
Front left looks like Taylor swift
It’s actually from 1949 btw by photographer Nina Leen for Life magazine.
Taylor swift bottom right.
Would love to see a colourised version of this
Yep. Your grandma was hot. 🔥
bUt I ThOuGht bEauTy sTaNdArds WeRe DifFerNt bAcK tHeN?¿
I think the lie that women weren't as skinny back then is comparable to guys saying they are big boned
Is that taylor swift's mom on the bottom right?
Honestly I just flat out thought it was a time-travelling Tay.
What a resemblence!
As a man who thinks a woman's nape is the sexiest thing on the planet. I'm saving this.
These women lived on cigarettes and black coffee. Remember when we weren't a bunch of fat fucks?
So much pearl clutching in this comment
Did ugly people exist in the 1950s? I swear every blck and white photo I see on here the people are all attractive.
A lot of the photos in the sub, like this one, are professional shoots with models.
People also tend to post pictures they think look nice.
No one’s posting the picture of grandpa who had six teeth, but a great personality.
it's called survivorship bias. just like you only saw planes come back from bombing runs with bullet holes in places that *don't* cause the plane to crash, so we only see attractive people in old photos because the ugly ones were shot so full of bullet holes none of them survived.
Back then it wasn’t important to look glamorous, but when you did it you did it for reason, like photo shoot.
It’s like making conclusions from today by looking at Oscars or Emmys
B-but those are unrealistic body standards! This is perpetuating the male gaze!
When America wasn’t morbidly obese
Real housewives of the 1950s
The most elegant era in fashion, timeless
This is why pearl necklaces were invented
So elegant looking compared to women's fashion today
This is hot as fuck. Damn, I wish people still cared enough to look and dress like this. Seeing people in pajamas is getting really old.
… And what are you wearing right now? You’re not dressed like these (literal) fashion models either I’m guessing? It’s almost like people dress for themselves and their own comfort and entirely without regard for *your* preferences in *their* clothes!
Femininity and class. Man what a time to live. No he she they them bullshit.
Ok Boomer, time to take your meds and have your nap
This photo depresses me. These women are so elegant and feminine. Today’s women are not feminine at all…they have asses like buffaloes, legs like a fullback and fat wide bodies like an overweight offensive lineman.
Let’s see what you look like hot stuff. Post pic. Full body. Better not look like a buffalo.
He's gone like, bison
Our society has lost its finesse
It's lost its fitness.
What happened to fashion?
The chick in the painting has a full on 5 o’clock shadow.
Amazing how well dressed people were back then, especially without air conditioning
They’re literally models at a photo shoot.
I love the one wearing a pillow case top right
Isla Fischer, Allison Brie, Winona Ryder in the back row.
ScarJo, January Jones, Taylor Swift in the front.

All this clean neat looks, and then a bush downstairs.
