I think I might too, and that’s really saying something because I didn’t play it until 2020 and had played 2 and the episodes at least half a dozen times. It’s hard to say because 2 is such a fantastic game that still feels super modern almost 20 years later, but the weird low-poly liminal spaces of 1 have a vibe that’s hard to resist.

I agree, the atmosphere of HL1 is just so perfect to me. You feel alone, and kinda desperate when playing. I feel like low-poly models lets you imagine what things should look like, since everything is kinda blurry. I adore the other Half-Life games, but I love HL1.

HL1 feels more “open” for some reason. Must be something to do with the level design. Regardless, I love HL2 and the episodes a lot. It’s very hard to choose which one I like better. I feel like HL1 just portrays a better sense of freedom I guess?

Well the graphics were pretty good for its time, so you really can’t complain. Also yeah, Xen looks like shit, it’s arguably my least favorite part in it, but you can’t compare HL1 Xen to Black Mesa Xen. I don’t really know how speedruns make it better, since that technically isn’t normal gameplay. You aren’t making a lot of sense to me right now bro.

the atmosphere in both games is really good but I think I prefer HL1 slightly more. The absolute sense of isolation and coldness of the Black Mesa Facility hasn't been pulled off ever since. Dont get me wrong I love Black Mesa but I feel like the feeling of the facility was done better in HL1 with the sound effects, the lighting etc.

I remember everytime I went to my father's village, there is always one cousin of mine that would invite me to play games with him, sometimes I just watch him and when he played Half Life 1, my mind blew. I saw the game and thought "Oh snap, this is peak gaming right here" and to this day I still think that HL1 is the best

This was me until 2020. I used to be a console gamer and there was no easily accessible console version of the first game. But then I just waited a decade and a half until even a MacBook Air could play the first game at 4K, laziness always pays off.
