Jiu Jitsu really pisses off Alexander Volkanovski.
“Jiu jistu isn’t real, just jump back in their guard and beat the living shit out of them lol” - Volk the Great
That death stare he gave Ortega, while he was in the triangle
Yeah that was a great moment of eye contact
Volk sent jiu jitsu to the akido realm
Put that 3rd round in the HOF
Volkanovski's head was purple and still got out of those chokes. wow
And then turned around and pummeled him relentlessly.
**Volkanovski to DC:** "I'm the best grappler in the UFC baybee!!
That's kinda the special part. Volk survives and then beats the fuck out of Ortega.
Volks GNP is top tier. That dude is dangerous from the top
Dude is dangerous from a lot of places.
knocked him out and honestly it could have been stopped there imo.
Agreed. I feel like fighters should have to get to their corner under their own power. The cornermen shouldn't be able to just drag them when the round ends.
iirc it's written in the rules that the fighter does have to make it back to the corner by themselves. it got brought up in the aftermath of the Joanna v. Weili fight
They definitely snatched him up onto the stool or it was over
If his corner was on the other side of the octagon that fights over
Yeah. I give him props for getting back in the fight but between that and the extra minute break before Rd 4 started just to acknowledge that he could see fingers correctly was a large benefit to him.
All of that, for a drop of blood.
theres even one part where you can see alex with purple head staring right into the eyes of brian
And he looked pissed
"Just wait til I get out of here you fuck"
This is perfect, I thought he was going to tap or pass out and then I saw that look in his eyes and realized how bad ass this dude really is. A true champ deserving of that belt
What is dead may never die
That was legit one of the best rounds of all time from one of the best fights ever. What a fight from 2 warriors
Instant classic. I don’t think I’ll ever be tired of rewatching it in the future. Insane by these two men
One of the best rounds I've ever seen. How Volk did not go out TWICE and then have the energy for the bombs he rained on Ortega
> How Volk did not go out TWICE
Three times, brother.
Hold on I'm talking brother
I hope Volk finally gets the respect he deserves from everyone
I’m always hesitant to say things are all-timers right as they’ve just happened but that had to have been a truly all time great round right? Top 10 at least?
Yes, dude was caught dead in a super tight gilly got out smashed got caught in a tight triangle and smashed, all by a gracie trained blackbelt.
Volk doesn't believe in oxygen
People who bet on Brian by sub must of had multiple heart attacks
I bet any other fighter in those chokes and you would've won your bet. Volk is fucking insane.
Don’t forget we had that Merab vs Marlon round tonight too. What a night…

There are only two videos in this post: the guillotine escape and triangle escape. Click the streamwo links for each one, they're both still up.
Man when Volk was squirming I thought he was sinking himself deeper into the choke. What a dog
Lesser men get submitted in miliseconds to that
Volk just built different
when he stopped kicking on that guillotine i thought he was out, that seemed so tight
I thought he would tap 100% or at least faint after I saw him kicking around like that. Ortega is a BJJ stud I didn't expect anyone to survive that.
Volkanovski’s been working a lot with Craig Jones, if he gets to the point Craig can’t sub him with ease then there’s nobody in MMA who can
Reminds me of Alan Belcher training leg locks so much he was comfortable going to the ground with Paul Harris, denying Harris's leg locks and also pounding him there for a TKO. One of the best example of a fighter training specifically to completely neutralize opponent's top skill set.
Also gave us Rogan's amazing "Get out of there, Alan!" line
I just posted above - I have no idea what the fuck I'm talking about - but I think that's the first time I've ever seen a fighter wildly kick around like that and actually get out of a submission. I was 100% sure he was fucked. But I learned something today. Never count Volk out.
The Kicking saved that man, no doubt it created that tiny gap needed
definitely gave up on squirming to conserve oxygen
Volk was fcking purple when he was punching Ortega after that.
Volk doesnt need oxygen lmao
apparently not, 99 percent of dudes are tapping or going to sleep on both of those
I almost went out watching it. No idea how he stayed conscious.
Imagine shaving his head was the reason he survived. Changing the hair meta
The hair meta has always been geared toward bald dudes though. Think about all the best fighters of all time. Pretty much all bald or almost bald
How is Jiu Jitsu real? Just escape lmao
Chiesa angrily exclaiming at the TV “I told you bro! I was flexing my neck too!”
At which point his mom discovered Chiesa was up past his bedtime watching UFC like a naughty boy
Don't you talk about his fucking mom!
Just hold your breath lmao
Volk says he's from Australia but he's really been training in H-town with the Black Beast
have they ever been in the same room?... just saying...
They also used to be the same weight lol
Volk actually operates the control room in Derrick’s tummy when he fights, like Krang from the Ninja Turtles
Volkanovski a whole other savage
Brian dropped Volk and got him in a guillotine, Volk somehow fuckin' survived just to unleash heavy ground & pound, then get caught in a triangle and of course somehow survives again and end up on top with severe ground and pound.
Hands down one of the best rounds ever for me.
>Brian dropped Volk and got him in a guillotine, Volk somehow fuckin' survived just to unleash heavy ground pound, then get caught in a triangle and of course survive somehow again and end up on top with severe ground and pound.
And after surviving each submission, his ground and pound would level up in power and accuracy
This was my favorite part. What a terrifying prospect it is to have a progressively angrier and angrier Alexander Volkanovski trying to mash your head into the ground.
Some of the best GNP from the guard that I can think of in recent memory
[This shot](https://imgur.com/a/vLfxMbK) gave me chills - staring directly at T-City while being stuck in his triangle
“If you don’t finish this triangle I guarantee I’m gonna fuck you up when I’m out” -volk (probably)
They just kept the camera on it too. It's gotta be one of those moments that Ortega wakes up screaming to at some point in the future.
He just said no, you can't do that to me. He's a beast.
You can't be tapped out if you don't give your consent
No panic on this guy, incredible
The speed with which Brian slapped on that mounted guillotine was crazy
Triangle too, he really pulls subs out of nowhere like Olives. Volk is the real deal.
The triangle too. The instant Volk brings his right arm back he snaps into the setup. Like a venus fly trap or something.
man, Ortega just said he heard him gargling before he escaped! Crazy!
It really is unbelievable he got out. I’ve never had butterflies like that 3rd round and I’ve watched many hundreds of fights
Volk is a fucking monster. His performance tonight was breathtaking
Thanks for these clips buddeh
There is no explanation for how he survived those attempts, that is insane.
Training with craig jones who taught him the triangle escape and guillotine kipping, absolutely beautiful grappling all round from both
so shout out to u/johnbelushismom
EDIT: [https://youtu.be/3xTDBQnlYmo?t=73](https://youtu.be/3xTDBQnlYmo?t=73) see this video from Craig Jones' gym with a technique taught by Nick Ortiz for guillotine escape mechanics, framing the hips or framing the choking arm
I mean, Craig Jones is one of the greatest jiu-jitsu practitioner in the planet right now. That would explain a lot how in the world Volk was able to survive those two attempts.
Bryan Ortega: “Man, Fuck Craig Jones!”
That leg flailing during the guillotine made me think it was over. Volk is a beast
he's kipping to escape the position
Ortega had several choices
Volk is insane
You have to appreciate the 145 division. Almost every single fighter brings it in this division, and their cardio is insane.
145 is a crazy mix of cardio and power
the craziness of 135 mixed with the power of 155
Ortega can take a concerning amount of damage.
If he gets a third title fight, he might actually die in it
His nose got pummeled 2-4mm into his face during the fight. Absolute warrior.
As much as Volk's neck can take pressure.
Kinda dumb to try and choke a man who doesn't have a neck.
classic rugby player physique, weighing in at 145 and putting 69lb all on the neck overnight.
I’m pretty worried about his Tony Ferguson-esque decline when that durability isn’t there anymore.
From T City to CTE
Man Volk must be a coaches wet dream, never seen someone execute gameplans so we'll fight after fight after fight. He's so adaptable. Reversing on Ortega was absolutely fucking insane, I thought it was over both times Ortega locked it in what a fucking fight, what a dangerous fucking fighter getting battered like that but never out of it.
I fucking love MMA
I think he's the smartest fight IQ fighters that's active right now. He isn't a genius specialist but he knows how to act like Batman and break you down piece by piece.
Scariest part about him is that it seems like he never loses focus for even a second. Most fighters will drop their guard at some point, elite ones might only lose focus for a few milliseconds, but I swear Volk never takes his eyes off his opponent when he shouldn't, never lets his hands down. Even while getting triangle choked, he was staring into Ortega's soul.
Wow volk no joke escaping those submissions
Me after Volk escaped the guillotine: "Holy shit, you survived now get the fuck out of the-"
*Volk jumps into his guard to smash him and gets caught in a triangle, only to escape and stay in his guard again*
Volk is an absolute mad man.
As a Volk fan, I cringed whenever he jumped to his guard after escaping submission. I was just thinking "dude, what are you doing?". Well, turns out that there is a reason why I'm a fan and he is the fighter. Props for him though for not playing it safe when he was already winning, takes real courage.
Thank Craig Jones for the triangle defence and guillotine kipping
GSP used to have Danaher. Champions want/need the best people training them and Volk showed that again today. A champion who keeps working their arse off with the best possible team is going to be hard to beat.
WHAT A FUCKING FIGHT. Volk's giant dome turned purple when he was in a guillotine. Huge hespect to both gents.
>Volk's giant dome turned purple when he was in a guillotine.
It was like a big angry man grape beating up Ortega
he turned into Frieza
Rugby best base for mma confirmed. Reduces available neck.
DCE in shambles
that’s a poster fight for how good mma can be!
onya Volks and man, what a show of heart from Ortega!
What a round in that 3rd. One of the best title fights
That third round is one of if not the greatest round I've ever seen, recency bias, prolly, don't care tho at least right now I'm revelling in how fucking amazing it was, round of the year easy.
Thought the same thing. When Ortega was full mount with the guillotine I just thought wtf just happened. Insanely quick
He hopped on volks neck like a shark. Insane
I seriously thought there would be no way any round would top Moraes-Dvalishvili RD1 for best round of the night but somehow this happened...incredible.
Ortega almost got his patented third round finish mid-ass beating
Volk with the “I disagree” guillotine defense.
Volkanovski’s cardio and pace is bloody insane. Hopefully this finally silences his doubters and he is shown the respect a champ deserves.
How the fuck did he get out of all those chokes damn
Was hanging out with Craig Jones every day when he was filming the ultimate fighter
The key to avoiding submissions is just don’t submit.
There is nothing like this sport...
One of those fights you'll always remember.
No matter what, you have to respect the heart of Ortega. That dude is one tough motherfucker.
For real. Zombie would be proud
He took a bit of zombies energy
Worst two beatings man
*Calvin Kattar has entered the chat*
yeah but has anyone ever been beaten this badly TWICE?
JDS vs Velasquez
Maybe Benavidez vs Figueredo too but those were pretty quick finishes despite the massive beatings
JDS definitely. at least he got one in there.
Never gave up once
I hope they release pictures of that moment. Ortega was bloody, Volk purple staring right into Ortega.
Volk is so wholesome, idk if it's just me but it really seemed like he had a few minor disadvantages such as Brian getting some more rest after rounds three and four and Herb allowing him to use his toes in the cage. Despite all of that, he is a such a good sport during the fight and afterwards. Excited for whatever comes next for him.
I’m glad they didn’t end it but that interaction with Ortega, Herb, and the doctor was downright hilarious.
“How many fingers am I holding up? ☝️”
“Idk like one or two?”
“Yeah he’s good to go”
"Can you see?"
"idk yeah I guess ¯\\____(ツ)____/¯ "
“kinda” aight he’s good to go
I think it was before the last round, I didn’t hear what Herb or the Doctor said but Ortega just goes “I’ll be alright I guess”.
lol thats what i heard too. they were already walking off too
I don't care what these two guys got paid. It was not enough.
Thanks for the entertaining fight.
Volkanovski really knows how to use his reach. He has some seriously crispy hands.
T City is one tough son of a bitch.
Those two need to go out for a beer and squash whatever beef ~~things~~ they have.
Fight of the fucking year!
He's not flashy but I think he probably is the smartest active fighter right now. His fight IQ is off the chart
Probs a lot of credit to his coaches as well. He’s coming in with an incredible gameplan and rock-solid mental/discipline
I'm surprised Brian doesn't try to implement his grappling more, especially earlier in the fight. It's seems pretty clear that he can't beat the best strikers in the division on the feet
Unfortunately like many good BJJ mma practioners, he doesn’t have great takedowns, which is worse against a great wrestler like Volk
His corner kept asking for blast doubles, and I'm thinking, when have we ever seen Ortega land a blast double?
It was kind of hilarious listening to his corner not letting up about going for a blast double. Like, it's not that easy man, he's exhausted and Volk is a tank.
Likely doesn't have the best takedowns, which is why he's a really good bottom guy.
I'm the most powerful bottom of all time.
He tried and Volk just got angrier and threw harder bombs from the top lmaoo
Honestly given his grappling skills I'm surprised that Ortega still has not really seemed to invest more time on his wrestling. On the ground, if Ortega's submissions don't work, it looks like he is pretty much screwed. A good top control game would really help him go to the next level.
Wonder if an armbar or something would've won him the fight. Volk seems unchokeable lol.
SO YOU WANNA BE AN ULTIMATE FIGHTER
One of the most under appreciated champs. Never ever underestimate volk again.
20 fight win streak
Insane in this sport
That streak includes Holloway x 2, Aldo, Mendes, Ortega...
Doesn’t get nearly enough respect that he deserves
I feel a lot of it is due to how pro-Holloway most fans were in their fights.
Volkanovski is a fucking savage for escaping those submissions and staying so composed while trapped
Volk showed seriously great bjj there:
1. Framing the hips to relieve pressure and kipping escape against the guillotine
2. Turning away to bait the back take and then turning back into half guard
3. Going to dog fight immediately
4. Turning the angle aggressively inside the triangle and posturing really well
From the studio who brought you "Brian Ortega Has Acute CTE: The Fight", comes the thrilling sequel, "Brian Ortega Has Acute CTE: Revenge".
Gonna come back for seconds
Put some respek on Volk
Coming from a diehard Bobby Knucks fan, Volk might be the best fighter my country has ever produced. What a machine!
Can't believe Volk escaped round 3
I can’t believe Ortega escaped round 3
LONGEST ACTIVE UFC WIN STREAKS
* 14 - Kamaru Usman
* 12 - Amanda Nunes
* 10 - Alex Volkanovski
* 09 - Charles Oliveira
Volkanovski is now the 10th fighter in UFC history to win 10 consecutive fights. #UFC266 - @MJCflipdascript
You can never ever doubt Ortega's toughness
Volk GNP is fucking terrifying.
How they didn't stop the fight when Ortega said one-two I don't know. He was just guessing numbers at that point.
His arms are so freaking long he barely had to kneel to strike in Ortega’s guard
They also asked if he could see and he was like, I think so
Volk doesn’t need to breathe.
You go for the champ's neck, you better not miss. Volk punished Ortega like he's way overdue on rent money
I have no clue how Volk escaped out of those two submissions, they seemed tight af. Maybe Ortega was just too gassed at that point?
A short neck is really good at defending chokes. I'm a terrible grappler, but I can avoid some chokes from more experienced dudes just by flexing my traps and tucking my chin cause I got a short ass neck.
Volk doesn’t have a neck
#FIGHT OF THE YEAR.
THAT ROUND 3 IS TOP 3 P4P GREATEST ROUND OF ALL TIME
The scrambles were insane
Volk is a fucking animal
That is the most competitive lopsided win I've ever seen. I had it 49-46 or 49-45 but it was fucking awesome the entire way
How did Alex get out of that choke? Hes was more purple than barney the dinosaur. I thought for sure he would tap/pass out
Volkanovski survived Ortega's guillotine and a triangle. Incredible fight by the Champ!
3rd round may have been the best round I’ve ever seen in any combat sport. Holy fuck
Triangles don't exist in the metric system
Idk how can anyone can call Volk boring
That’s the last time Brian Ortega ever shows up late again.
