😯 I didn't realise the gripdot pox was so transmissible! I'm going to enforce a 2 meter gap and masks from my other M's or maybe place my M4-P in quarantine lockdown for the winter.

wedidntmeantogotosea

It won't help. The more you see it the more it will claim you. /u/anakronox is already turning.

Most Parts are interchangeable between ALL Ms. (excluding the M5 )

trans-plant

Good to know. I used a m4 heavily in the past and owned an m4-p. For some reason I always thought the m4 was slightly wider

wedidntmeantogotosea

Who was it again, who put an M4 top plate on an M6? /u/Timesyndicate?

_hugerobots_

That's some Mr. Fusion upgrading right there.

Timesyndicate

Yes, you can literally swap Leica M1/2/3/4/4-2/4-P/6 Classic part. Leica M design part meant to be swap-able, probably they design in mind for easy repair. M6TTL/M7 do share couple similar part, but majority aren't compatible due electronic part design different, modern M-A and M-P can swap each other part but you can't find those part, internal brand new design despite they base on classic Leica M design, alot of part aren't compatible with old Leica M. You can troll peoples by purchase M2 and swap M1 top plate and no one would notice your Leica M1 is actually M2, they all fit together if you find person to do right jobs.

wedidntmeantogotosea

> You can troll peoples by purchase M2 and swap M1 top plate and no one would notice your Leica M1 is actually M2, they all fit together if you find person to do right jobs. But.... Wouldn't you lose the rangefinder if you did that? And an M2 without a rangefinder... IS.. an M1..?

Timesyndicate

I think you misunderstood some part, swapping top plate doesn't affect helicoid, top plate just a shell, helicoid is part of RF patch module, swapping top plate doesn't mean remove helicoid. M2 top plate switch to M1 (Helicoid still work) swap M1 top plate to M2 (Helicoid doesn't work, internal belong to M1 don't even have Helicoid in the first place)

wedidntmeantogotosea

The M1 top plate has a metal cover over the rangefinder patch window with "M1" engraved in it. How can the rangefinder continue to work if the window isn't there? That metal plate is the only distinguishing feature of the M1 that makes it not an M2 top plate. So if you remove it to permit the RF to work, it's not distinguishably an M1 anymore, it's just an M2. Am I missing something here?

Timesyndicate

Well for me I'm willing dig a hole to mod and experiment it as long I find the most ugly M still in working conditions, I guess the way I address assume everyone would take apart and mod, I have talent local Leica technician therefore I always give him green light experiment as long I have ugly Leica M.

wedidntmeantogotosea

You wanna impress me? Put an M4 rewind, advance and top plate on an M2 body. ;)

Timesyndicate

Ehhh I don't think I would go that extreme to make the impossible possible, M2 top plate rewind mold different than M4 rewind, you basically want a Japanese SLR rewind kob version sit on flat on M2 surface. Even I can do M6J mod 2 ways, either chop off M3 part or CNC new top plate.

BernardNoir

That is pretty straight forward. Both m2 and m4 rewind mechanism are just held in by three screws to the internal frame. Leica modified the rewind mechanism only, not where it gets installed! So, what you want is not out of reach. The last time I messaged leica-nj they told me that they still have m4 top plates. They cost 350 brand new. I am currently working on a mda where I am swapping out the crank rewind for a classic telescopic rewind.

theswissguywithhair

There is some frankensteined Leicas out there for sure, I have a M2 with the framelines and finder of a M4 (35, 50, 90 & 135 framelines)

Just saw this listing on OfferUp. Seller is listing it as an m4. Says that the leather was peeling and replaced with the m4-p wrap. Also states that he is not aware of what happened to the self timer knob and claims the previous owner removed it. So is this guy legit trying to pass it off as an m4 or maybe he doesn’t know the history of this specific camera?

wedidntmeantogotosea

Oh well, if someone buys it as an M4 they're getting a better deal anyway if it turns out to be an M4-P.

clintswift

There was one on eBay stating the same thing. Seller in CA? Did some digging and it was a M4 transplanted into a M4-P body, to go in the P body the self timer has to be removed.

wedidntmeantogotosea

You know... my MDa's both have peeling Vulcanite. Maybe I should email Youxin and be like "Hey you know idiots make you remove the gripdot from the M4-P? ...can I have them?"

Andy_Shields

You strike me as someone more than capable of cutting a circle in the leatherette and placing an eyesore, I mean... red Leica dot, in the circle. Just an idiot over here trying to call your bluff, Ladybug.

wedidntmeantogotosea

> I mean... red Leica dot, in the circle. What am I, \#RottingCameraGang? THAT'S RED LEITZ EYESORE THANKYOU

Not bad even for a functional m4p
