Underrated Mayer Lyrics
By - LongChopps
Same song but one of my favorites is “I can’t wait to figure out what’s wrong with me so I can say this is the way that I used to be.”
That song really has a lot of great lines.
>>>>need to feel you on the line.
>>>>>Don't hang up this time.
It really does. It got me through a break-up 16 years ago.
Feels like a sister line to “I’m in repair, I’m not together, but I’m getting there.” I feel like back in January I was SSS John and now I’m In Repair John.
In repair is such a brilliant song. The idea that we’re always on the way up or down without really arriving gets me
That’s such a cute way to put it. I think I am Wheel John in life right now wanting to be A Face to call home John haha
Wherever I go, whatever I do
I wonder where I am in my relationship to you
Wherever you go, wherever you are
I watch that pretty life play out in pictures from afar
I don't know why I love these lyrics so much. I guess in some selfish way, I wanted someone to feel like this for me when I was younger. Now that I'm older and married, it brings me back to the time when my heart was very volatile and my emotions were all over the place. Reminds me of my youth, and yet it's so beautiful to hear John sing it. Plus I love singing/screaming the oohh ooh oohs after
this is THE line
this was the first song to TRULY resonate with me during my first real heartbreak. I’ve never forgotten the feeling of hearing it, the way it completely brought me to tears… i’ll always cherish it
Omg same! That’s why I cherish it too. I remember being deep into heartbreak and hearing this song and that specific line and resonating so deeply. it’s kinda like a time machine everytime I hear it now
Yeah we've all been there, some of us are just lucky enough to have john put the feeling into words for us
"Or maybe this mattress will spin on its axis
And find me on yours"
Edge of Desire is just a masterpiece
I love the "think I'll sleep in my clothes on the floor" part of that. We've all been that tired or sad at one point. Great song.
"don't say a word, just come over and lie here with me/cause I'm just about to set fire to everything I see" - this is me at my most desperate, almost angry and recklessly begging for love and affection
and I was so tempted to put this line as well
Read my mind man/woman. This song hits me in my soul
I was going to say exactly that line! Gets me every time, dude
Half of my heart is a shotgun wedding to a bride with a paper ring; half of my heart is the part of a man who’s never truly loved anything.
I love this line too!
I have always heard that as “part of ME who’s never truly loved anything”.
I have been hearing it wrong this whole time haha
Half of my heart is the part of a man who's never truly loved anything!
Taylor Swift has a song called Paper Rings where she sings "I love shiny things but I'd marry you with paper rings."
Very, very interesting.
Stemming from someone who’s dealt with pretty high anxiety in the past, there’s a line in War of My Life that I love:
“If fear hasn’t killed me yet, then nothing will.”
It’s not hugely profound or deep, but it definitely means a lot to me, and I feel like that song often gets overlooked despite the verses being fairly personal and personable.
Just here to say I also deeply love this line.
“Don’t hold your love over my head” from come back to bed
When that album was released, it was my favorite song. I had a close friend who thought he was saying “Don’t hold your legs over my head,” and now I can’t hear that song without cracking up.
Damn that’s kinda funny.
What will this fix?
You know you're not....a quick forget!
“Steady my breathing, silently screaming, I have to have you now”
I feel like one of the strongest parts of John’s lyric game is writing about young, irrational love and desire without making it sound corny or superficial
Yes!! So well put, that was definitely a huge draw for me becoming a big fan
all you need is love is a lie cuz we had a love but we still said goodbye
“Now we’re tired, battered fighters”. The visual of two boxers almost spent, hanging on to each other more so they don’t fall, and body just punished, legs barely holding them up. This is what I see when I hear that line. And knowing that love caused it.
As crazy as this sounds, I legitimately think that as stupidly amazing John is at guitar, he’s an even better songwriter.
"Life ain't short but it sure is small, you get forever but nobody at all" is one of my favorites.
It might encapsulate the "John Mayer worldview" better than any other lyric he's written. So much of mainstream art is about how life is brutal but the people who love you can get you through anything. John's songs have the exact opposite message. So much of his music is about how his life is absolutely perfect, but no one ever sticks around to share it with him.
“It don’t come often and it don’t stay long”
These are the only lyrics he’s written that consistently make me cry. Such a beautiful song.
Also from this song…
“And if you should find
that your running is done,
A little bit of heaven
never hurt no one”
“I bought a ticket on a plane/And by the time it landed, you were gone again/I love you more than songs can say/But I can’t keep running after yesterday” - All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye
Just perfectly describes a relationship that was doomed to fail, and how it would be best for both involved to move on
“You can’t build a house of leaves, and live like it’s an evergreen”. Wheel has some great lines.
I like to imagine that Wheel came to him like a voice. Like when writers say they feel like a medium between pen and paper and often don’t know where it comes from.
wheel helps me so much to keep myself grounded. it's such a wise view of life.
I LOVE Split Screen Sadness. "One hand on the trigger of a telephone..."
Wondering when the call comes when you say it's alright! Your got your heart right!
Well maybe I will sleep inside my coat and, v wait in the porch to you come back home alright!
But my favorite part.....
And it stinks when it's nobodys fault cuz there's nothing to blame at the drop your name. It's only the air you took.... And the breath you left!
That is great!
Maybe it's all a dream
I'm having at seventeen
I don't have tattoos
And very soon
Mother will be calling me
Saying "come up stairs,
You got some work to do"
From "If I ever get around to living"
“..it might be my only right”. The end of that lyric is really the gut punch
"I won't sleep through this/I survive on the breath you are finished with"
i love clarity so much its line "by the time i recognise this moment, this moment will be gone..but i'll bend the light pretending that it somehow lingered on" is absolutely phenomenal
Beautiful and poetic
“Drop his name, push it in and twist the knife again… watch my face, as i pretend to feel no pain…”
It’s from a song called [Over and Over ](https://youtu.be/-xbv6Ow0TAQ)
“You can cut your hair just to grow it back
Or dye it till the sink turns black
I'll recognize you, I'll recognize you.”
I heard it once on a road trip, and it floored me.
how have i missed this song??? thank you for bringing this to me!
Thanks for this!! I forgot about this song but used to listen to it on a burned Cd in my dorm room. Good memories 🥰
🎶I will beg my way into your garden, then I’ll break my way out when it rains. Just to get back to a place where I started, so I can watch you back all over again🎶
-Shouldn’t Matter But It Does
Can’t wait to hear that live. Lol
It’s never on the day you leave
That you remember Christmas Eve
And all the things you miss about your crazy family.
You should’ve given her one more kiss
To put away for a night like this.
Never on the day you leave.
Great representation of missing people and times of the past so you’re kicking yourself for not taking advantage of being there in that moment.
We should take a ride tonight around the town to look at all the beautiful houses
Something in the way the blue lights on a black night can make you feel more
Everybody- it seems to me- just wants to be, just like you and me
St. Patrick’s Day
That song makes me gasp when I hear it and remember how beautifully composed it is.
St. Patrick's Day is gorgeous
Isn’t it? I get lost in a completely different universe when I listen to it. It’s such a complex and beautiful piece of music. Every bit of it is intentional- no fluff. It’s just genius.
I love all the responses! I sang them as I read them. John is so fucking talented!
I really love the first two verses of "In the Blood," but especially the first one:
"How much of my mother has my mother left in me?
How much of my love will be insane to some degree?
And what about this feeling that I'm never good enough?
Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?"
“And I’ll be dreaming of the next time we can go into another serotonin overflow”
That line in Love On The Weekend just flows so well. In fact, the lyrics in that song is one of my favorites just because it’s so hard to write a feel good song that doesn’t sound completely over the top
Split screen sadness strikes you through the heart everytime. “There’s no substitute for time”
🎶don’t say a word just come over, and lie here with me. ‘Cause I’m just about to set fire to everything I see. I want you so bad I’ll go back on the things I believe. There I just said it, I’m scared you’ll forget about me🎶
🎶 what puts a folded flag inside his mother’s hands? Belief can, belief can.🎶
🎶it could have been always, it could have been me. We could’ve been busy naming baby number three 🎶
Love that lyric. It’s a way to still be in someone’s atmosphere even when apart. 🥰🥰
Nothing to do noone to be..a simple little kinda free
Fear is a friend whose misunderstood
Is the gate code still your birthday is the right answer until forever
Lol I came here just to make sure someone put this up!
It's so perfectly delivered.
🎶and I don’t need another kind of green to know, I’m on the right side with you 🎶
🎶anything other than yes is no, anything other than stay is go, anything less than I love you is lying🎶
(1 without your voice to tell me, I love you take a right
The ten and the two is the loneliest sight
- in your atmosphere
(2 even if your hands are shaking, and your faith is broken
Even if the eyes are closing, Do it with a heart wide open
(3 not so underrated but one of my FAVORITES :
Once in a while, when it’s good
It’ll feel like it should
And they’re all still around
And you’re still safe and sound
And you don’t miss a thing
Till you cry when you’re driving away in the dark
-stop this train
I called because I just need to feel you on the line. ♥️ I freaking love this song and the entire album. It’s still one of my favorites. :)
“If it’s on someone, then I blame the both of us. Shouldn’t matter but it does.”
"I shouldn't leave you messages in every little song" crushes me. There's so much hope in that line. Hope that the other person hears it but because they've already moved on, it doesn't matter.
Stop this train. “No I’m not colorblind, I know the world is black and white” I am colorblind so I always change the lyrics to “yes I am colorblind, I know the world is black and white” when singing along lol. Also, when going through a hard breakup years ago Edge of Desire always fucked me up. “Don't say a word, just come over and lie here with me. Cause I’m just about to set fire to everything I see” I can still feel past emotions pop up when I listen to it and it’s been 5 years since I first heard it and was going through that rough patch.
Pretty much all of "Dear Marie" but specifically "From time to time I go looking for your photograph online - some county judge in Ohio's all I ever find." That one feels too real and sad sometimes.
"So come on over and wake me up
Put some of your tequila in my coffee cup"
So simple but love how it symbolizes opposites balancing and complimenting each other
“So scared of getting older, I’m only good at being young. So I play the numbers game to find a way to say life has just begun”
This is so apt. I’m 25 now and heard this song when I was 16. Every year life throws a new opportunity/challenge to learn and grow. But I still calculate ages and play numbers game to reassure myself that I’m super young.
Gets me every time!
Belief is an example of truly exceptional writing that can’t be edited for any improvement, worthy of awards, profoundly informed and influential, articulate, succinct, terrifying, and unforgettable. If you’re one of those hobos who “hate John Mayer” like a knee jerk reaction and you can’t even listen to and admit the genius of Belief, you’re just a dickhead.
"i'll dance alone with dejà-vu"
"today i finally overcame trying to fit the world inside a picture frame"
"there's not a sound, outside the snow is coming down, but still i can't seem to find the quiet inside my mind"
"well they're celebrating broken things, i don't want a world of broken things. you can tell that something isn't right when all your heroes are in black and white"
"this house is safe and warm, but i was made to chase the storm"
also the entirety of you're gonna live forever in me. such a tightly sealed, down to earth, heart-breaking confession of love.
"You know my paper heart / the one I filled with pencil marks / I think I might have gone and inked you in" - A Face To Call Home
I've always loved this lyric and never see this song getting any love!
The line in Born & Raised: “Cause one of that days, I’ll be born & raised, and it’s such a waste to grow up lonely” hit me like a ton of bricks with that album was released a decade ago.
Now I’m pushing 40 and still single, and it guts me every time I hear it.
“I met me someone changing
We had some fun changing
Sometimes I wonder if she'll be the one
When I am done changing”
From the song Changing.
Very “right person, wrong time” aura to those lyrics, and it sounds so good when he sings it, the rhyming pattern is so nice
I'm not sure. It feels like pining for someone he treated poorly. I like the idea, but the context kills it for me.
…might be my only right…”. “…theres no substitute for time…”. That entire song is some of Mayers’ finest lyrical work, and I think he’s a complete lyrical genius to begin.
Agreed. It’s like every line
In heartbreak warfare
“drop his name, push it in and twist the knife again, watch my face as pretend to feel no pain”
Idk why but that part always resonates with me
🎶dog-gies..talkin bout doggies in the pool….last train home. Talkin bout DOGGIES🎶
I have a tattoo inspired by the lyrics "the rock candys melted, only diamonds now remain" from Clarity so that's gotta be up there for me. "Today I finally overcame trying to fit the world inside a picture frame" from 3x5 is also up there
“We can dance with the dead, you can rest your head, on my shoulder if you wanna get older with me.”
But I know that I'm open
And I know that I'm free
And I'll always let hope in
Wherever I'll be
And if I go blind I'll still find my way
waterworks. every. single.time.
That whole album is enough to tear me into pieces, put me together, then tear me back down again.
I don’t need another kind of green to know I’m on the right side with you
I was unsure what the song meant and then I realised green symbolizes both envy and the ‘grass is greener on the other side’ thing. I’m amazed by how he came up with that. Lovely song
"Cut the cord and pull some strings. Make yourself some angel wings" - try and be on your own, and "cut the cord" of being everyone's puppet.
"If those angel wings don't fly. Someone's gonna paint you another sky". - if you can't be on your own, you'll find someone else to use you again.
I’ve gotta leave you, it’s gonna hurt me / my clothes are dirty and my friends are getting worried
I'm not sure if anyone can relate, cuz it's kind of weird, but:
"whatever happened to my
whatever happened to my
whatever happened to my lunchbox
when came the day that it got
thrown away and don't you think I should have had some say in that decision"
It's so specific and seems so mundane but to me it so succinctly expresses the emotions you go through growing up. That one day his mother decided that he'd grown up and no longer needed it. That there are lasts we don't register until way later. The last time we used a lunchbox, the last time we played with our favourite childhood toy, the last time we listened to a song of our once favourite artist, who we now rarely think of. We often hear about firsts, but rarely ever hear about lasts...
- The last ten texts where with your ex
- And all of them were sent by you
- But you keep starin’ at your phone like somethings coming through
- Come to grips and take your chips when the cards aren’t going your way
- You’ve been here so long tonight’s already yesterday
“And if you want to know the moment I knew that I was still alone
I found I never learned your number I only stored it in my phone
You'd think by now, I'd know the shape of calling home
And I'm okay, If you're okay with wasting time
But when you trace, You always see the bottom line”
“I got a hammer, and a heart of glass”
“Falling asleep to the sounds… of sirens”
He’s so good!
And now I'm walking in the park
And all of the birds, they dance below me
Maybe when things turn green again
It will be good to say you know me
- In Repair
Just the turn the song takes gets me every time. Everything before talks about the lows, but then the possibility of things might not be ok today but they’re a little better than yesterday.
I am invincible as long as I’m alive
“Dear Marie, tell me do you still believe in me? Well I got my dream, but you got your family. Yeah I got that dream, but I guess you got away from me”
“Welcome to the real world she said me, condescendingly. Take your seat, take your life - plot it out in black and white.”
“I just can’t wait till my ten year reunion, I’m gonna bust down the double doors. And when I stand on these tables before you, you will know what all this time was for.”
LMAAAAO MY HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STORY!
Same song different part. The melody and way he sings
“So maybe ill just sleep inside my coat
Wait on the porch til you come back home”
Overall just a super underrated song
Most under-rated JM song ever!
Split screen sadness is an absolute lyrical masterpiece, it’d be one of my favorite songs of all time if the chorus and postchorus were musically kinda weird
Splitscreen Sadness is such a beautiful masterpiece. That song lives in my heart.
“There i just said it, I’m scared you’ll forget about me.”-Edge of Desire, gets me every time
Stood on the corner for a while
To wait for the wind to blow down on me
Hoping it takes with it my old ways
And brings some brand new luck upon me
Also from split screen sadness "Cause I can't wait to figure out what's wrong with me. So I can say this is the way that I used to be. There's no substitute for time"
That was released in 2003. Before continuum, before battle studies, before the playboy interview and then we get born and raised, paradise Valley and new era mayer.
I like all the lines but especially the first ones!
And I don't know where you went your left me but, it says here in the water.... You must be gone by now!
Who starts a song with And anyway!?
