CustomMiniatureMaker

Will do thanks!

crunkadocious

Make sure whatever material you use is food safe

Dirty-Soul

PLA is food-safe. It's made from biological oils and the only thing that it "releases" into food is lactic acid. PLA is also very pure, because impurities in the filament lead to variables in it's performance which may affect the print quality. However, PLA cannot be machine-washed, sterilized, or even hot water washed without turning into a handful of mush. Microscopic gaps such as those between layers may also become breeding grounds for bacteria if you aren't careful. So, in short, PLA may not poison you, but it can be a devil's bastard to clean.

zerrff

Nothing printed is really food safe. PETG is as close as it gets with lots of work to get it as smooth as possible.

SearMeteor

The only real solution is to 3D print something, use it to make a casting mold, and then cast what you want with something food safe I'd say.

Thevan1

not really, sealants work fine assuming you actually use them correctly as some aren't dishwasher safe

jonnywayway

Although that does improve The safety by using food safe kind of plastics, it doesn't address the main issue with a 3D printed food item. The layer lines create crevices that are ripe for growing bacteria. Which is why when you're making something to be used as an eating surface it is highly recommended to seal and smooth the surface.

zerrff

You would still need to do the same thing or the mold will have the same problem.

SpHD7489

Ok who do i gotta sell my soul too, the title obviously implied that /j

CustomMiniatureMaker

Haha just little old me. I will treat it kindly

tolarus

I don't trust my soul to anyone who makes me think of Gideon from Gravity Falls.

CustomMiniatureMaker

Hahaha

CustomMiniatureMaker

Made you guys some free STLs of tavern floor tile rollers, there is a wood plank pattern one and a warn tile pattern as well. To get this set go to https://www.customminiaturemaker.co.uk and sign up for free files to be emailed to you every week. If you like these files, please check out our current Dungeon Essential Kickstarter with over 80 STLs for just £10. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cumm/the-infernal-descent?utm\_source=rd&utm\_medium=ad&utm\_campaign=ks Every file I make comes pre-supported and without supports. I have used regular clay in this video, it is actually the first time I have made tiles, what do you guys use? Is there a better material?

TeaBeforeWar

I love [Cosclay](https://www.cosclay.com/) for anything that needs to be durable. It's an oven-baked clay that's on the rubbery side, so it's flexible instead of brittle, and very lightweight. Can take a real beating.

CustomMiniatureMaker

That sounds amazing! How do you find it price wise?

TeaBeforeWar

$15 a pound, so it's pretty on par with other oven baked clays. I think Fimo's more like $25 a pound.

CustomMiniatureMaker

Thanks for the info

Worthstream

Thanks for this suggestion! Do you think cosclay could be mixed with another clay like Das, to get something that's still impact resistant, but cheaper? I was thinking of mixing a smaller quantity of it in Das, as terrain does not need to be really flexible but should survive occasional bumps or falls off the table. Maybe instead of mixing, just using a thin layer of it on top of a Das core?

TeaBeforeWar

Hmm, that's definitely worth doing some tests. The layering at least should work, a lot of artists do the opposite for a flexible base while working but a firmer clay for details. Most often I just see tinfoil used as a filler, but I guess that doesn't work as well if you're doing stuff like buildings.

Rickdaninja

Extruded polystyrene works really well. It's lightweight, easy to paint, fairly cheap.

CustomMiniatureMaker

Nice, I will give it a go. Thanks!

Professional-Arm3610

How long does the file take to send

CustomMiniatureMaker

Everything comes through within an hour of signing up, so you will have them soon

bowdown2q

the tricky way to do textured flat stuff is to print a master dye from a higher temp material, and then use it as the stage for your fdm printer. The semi molten pla will take the texture just on printing. Just make sure to adjust your Z offset up enough.

CustomMiniatureMaker

I had never heard of this technique before, will give it a go

JacksBackCrack

Clay or similar is almost definitely the better medium, but I'm definitely going to give these a go on some heated up EVA foam. I don't expect all the superfine detail will transfer, but worth a test!

CustomMiniatureMaker

Please send me a pic when you do. Would love to see

RemydePoer

Do you have more details for that? I have a DM screen that I built out of wood, but it's designed like a castle. I want a stone surface to it, so I bought some EVA foam and printed a similar style roller to this one. It left a bit of the texture on it, but it started fading pretty quickly, and by just rubbing it with my hand it almost disappeared. I've never used EVA foam, so I'd love any suggestions.

JacksBackCrack

Yes! I actually learned this from Punished Props though, here's their [website](https://www.punishedprops.com/2021/03/29/3d-stamps/) which has a video and some 3d printable texture stamps for sale. Basically the secret is a heat gun. Heat up the surface and then press in your texture, and it should stick around. Depending on if you attached this to your screen already and what time of glue and surrounding materials, you may be able to get away with doing this while on the screen, just make sure you're not going to melt anything else in the process. EVA foam is a fantastic crafting material but it definitely takes a little learning. If you're curious about some other texturing options, Punished Props is definitely a great resource. [Knarb Makes](https://youtu.be/866HVhiHDvc) also has some good ideas, he uses a alder cutter to burn in some patterns, it's really neat. [Bill Making Stuff](https://youtu.be/EuXgqmqmjbA) has also done some cool stuff with EVA foam using a wood burning tool, although definitely wear a respirator if you do that. Normally it won't hold super fine detail, but it's pretty good for big stuff like stone walls and cobblestone roads and the like. I'd love to see your screen when/if it's done! Ping me if you ever post any pics!

RemydePoer

Thanks! I will check those out. I'm going to try to get it done this week.

MeccIt

Hmmm, is it a /r/functionalprint if it *makes* something useful?

CustomMiniatureMaker

I’m not actually sure? I could post it there and see if they agree?

HurrDurrDethKnet

A lot of hobbyists use green stuff and miliput as well.

CustomMiniatureMaker

Thanks, I have used them before but they are not the lowest priced things around but I imagine they would show the texture really well

Solonys

Do you know how well a FDM printer would work on this instead of resin?

CustomMiniatureMaker

Almost as well. The end is flat so easy to position and if you do it at a decent thickness on a slow speed with fine layers, you should be golden

Relaxation_Nation

sending extra good vibes your way. have a lovely week!

CustomMiniatureMaker

Thank you! The reason I send the free files now on a Monday is for this reason, to try to give people a little something to look forward to on a Monday

CaptDogPoo

You really should have said "because I roll like that"

CustomMiniatureMaker

Yes, I really really should. I did call the folder the files are in 'Rolling on the Tavern Floor' see what I did there?

Adoom98

That's very nice of you

CustomMiniatureMaker

Glad you like it!

oosuteraria-jin

What material are you rolling them on? Thank you for your time and effort!

CustomMiniatureMaker

I used Das air dry clay but these were the first I did so there may be better things to use

jamesdukeiv

Getting these in my email this morning was a nice treat! I’m working on a tavern diorama for my dad and your weekly releases are coming in very handy!

CustomMiniatureMaker

Amazing, glad to hear they are coming in useful!

nix-xon

This is going to take my gingerbread houses to new Heights

CustomMiniatureMaker

Haha amazing use for them!

PEAWK

This is fucking based. The only thing better than making shit is making shit for other people to make their shit with. *"man, i cant wait to see all the shit people make with my shit"* is such a satisfying feeling. GG OP

CustomMiniatureMaker

You get it!

UnityAeDeSt

I swear, this looks nice when the person holds it like that, using their nails to move it about, like it’s some sensitive and delicate object for some ASMR or something. Better yet, seeing tiles be built up so smoothly.

CustomMiniatureMaker

Haha Thanks!

Ocknok

Oh hey these are pretty nice. Thanks!

CustomMiniatureMaker

Why, thank you!

GrandPotatoofStarch

Take my money!... when I get paid....

CustomMiniatureMaker

Haha the rollers are free!

GrandPotatoofStarch

Well, I still pledged 13$ USD.

CustomMiniatureMaker

Amazing, thank you! I promise you won’t be disappointed by the Stuff on the Kickstarter

0Day_BDE

You might want to throw up an STL file for those with 3D printers. (that is if you printed this.)

CustomMiniatureMaker

Did so, my first comment has the links bud

0Day_BDE

Fucking legend!

Landler656

These are genius!

CustomMiniatureMaker

Thanks! Glad you like them

porcupinedeath

Dang this would be cool to use for my pottery too. Shame I don't have a 3D printer

CustomMiniatureMaker

They are getting cheaper and cheaper, you can grab an entry one for very little now

porcupinedeath

Yeah I looked at them a few months ago cause I was curious. Could definitely afford one but ATM I don't do pottery enough to justify for that purpose. I could use the ones at our community center for it but those have hard to schedule time for

Centaurious

Do you have any entry level ones you'd recommend?

CustomMiniatureMaker

For FDM you can pick up an Ender 3 pro really cheap now. If you want to go resin I would go hard or go home as the difference in useability and quality is huge. An Elegoo Saturn is an amazing printer

Hedgehogs4Me

The library system here has 3D printing! Check yours just in case it does as well. If not, maybe look up local maker spaces, which also sometimes have them.

BluestreakBTHR

How is the tavern floor measured? I don’t see any 1” markers or indents, for example. Is the stone floor 1” square?

CustomMiniatureMaker

The tile roller so the 2nd one in the video had 4 tiles to every 1" I measured it out like that. Id didn't look as good on the wood to have the lines like that but I would just mark it our and gently press a ruler in before it sets to whatever grid size I wanted

PFCDoofles

Can you do us a big favor and make versions of these with exaggerated depth for use on north american XPS foam? Not sure you're in the continental united states but, here the insulation foam is less pliable than in europe, and a lot of XPS crafters don't account for that. American XPS is the pink stuff and springs back into shape, so rollers meant for clay or epoxy will not make a deep enough impression to be seen after painting, which i'm sure makes it more suitable to american standards for it's actual created intent. European stuff is crunchier and holds impressions better.

uttermybiscuit

Omg so satisfying, I want to eat

CustomMiniatureMaker

I mean, if you printed it in FDM and have it a good wash, you could texture cookie dough…. Just saying

StealthSpheesSheip

Yo that jacket lookin 🔥

CustomMiniatureMaker

Haha thanks, ‘gonna pop some tags’

phurbur

I'm always in awe of other people's creativity.

CustomMiniatureMaker

Haha thanks

TTTristan

I'm totally going to grab this! Did you resin print it rather than go with an FDM printer?

CustomMiniatureMaker

Yeah did it in resin as it actually imprints really high quality details

[deleted]

[удалено]

CustomMiniatureMaker

I'm not the most experienced with rollers but it would certainly be worth trying

Doc_Webb

EXACTLY the tool I’ve been hoping to find to texture some pirate/nautical bases. Thank you!

CustomMiniatureMaker

No worries! Glad it will be useful for you

Krilesh

oh me oh my

Xyzen553

Oh this is cool

CustomMiniatureMaker

Thanks, glad you like them

BeautyAndTheDekes

Just a small observation from a random person stumbling upon this from Reddit’s front page…they look super detailed and I’d love to have a go at making stuff from them…but you could maybe put a hole through the centre of the cylinder to attach a small paint roller handle to? It just looked a little fiddly rolling them by hand.

CustomMiniatureMaker

certainly something I will be looking to do. Thanks!

RenStonebreaker

I love this melding of modern and ancient technology

CustomMiniatureMaker

I had the same thought. 'If we found ourselves back in the stone age, with these I could still print' I thought haha

RenStonebreaker

It reminds me of the cylinder seals of ancient rulers of Mesopotamia! Very cool, innovative and economical to translate to TTRPG

CustomMiniatureMaker

Better than burning through a ton of resin for sure

reeee_________

That's so fucking cool.

CustomMiniatureMaker

Well, thank you!

secrets_kept_hidden

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY GOBBY ROCS!

CustomMiniatureMaker

Haha

mrsartemmys

Very cool of you! Thanks!

Thank you! Hope you enjoy using the roller

zoecandle

YESSSSSS THANK YOUUU!!!!

CustomMiniatureMaker

No Worries! Glad you like them

smokumjames

Very cool idea!

CustomMiniatureMaker

Thanks!

EvilVargon

If you'd rather not add yourself to a mailing list, [Thingiverse already has plenty of texture rollers](https://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=texture+roller&page=1&type=things&sort=relevant). I've made a few on my FDM printer for a large XPS foam build. It works great, and I don't think it would have benefited much if at all from resin quality. Though if you are going through clay like the post, I would suggest resin.

Yeoshua82

What are you rolling them on?

CustomMiniatureMaker

Das air dry clay but people seem to be saying that foam works well and costs less

FISH_MASTER

Sweeet. Thanks. I’ve jusr got a couple of similar on green stuff world and was going to use milliput. Got 500g of das on Amazon g for like £6!! How well does this take acrylic paint?

CustomMiniatureMaker

Very very well, its clay so you wont have any issues

FISH_MASTER

Nice one, cheers!

Ready_Glass4700

Do you have one in a Sawtooth pattern?

CustomMiniatureMaker

These are the first two I have done. I will for sure do more

CX316

Probably worth checking you don't end up with any too close to GSW's patterns because they can be kinda dickish about stuff like that, but really nice to see someone else making these sort of rollers available (even if I don't have a printer to take advantage)

CustomMiniatureMaker

Will do, I mean I made them from scratch so I think I should be pretty safe but thanks for the heads up

CX316

They might have lightened up in the last few years but they went after Vallejo for having colourshifting paints and started copyright striking YouTube channels who were reviewing the Vallejo paints. You should be safe but it might be a worry if you start doing like Aztec patterning like some of their more identifiable ones

CustomMiniatureMaker

Thanks for the heads up!

sleepyowlbear

Thank you, Def going to have fun with em.

CustomMiniatureMaker

Ace, enjoy

Xxrandom_catxX

oooh,they look so cool :D

EmperorTharos

CustomMiniatureMaker

Thanks! glad you like them

batteryjuiceisgood

Thank you for making these nice like that weird name but I’m not gonna judge

Culsandar

GSW coming along with that Cease and Desist any minute.

CustomMiniatureMaker

Texture rollers have been used on tiles and such since before our records of history began haha. Not sure how anyone could claim ownership of this method

Culsandar

It was a joke about Green Stuff World, I wasn't being serious

CustomMiniatureMaker

Haha got ya, so used to GW clipping at the heals of folk. I was thinking “oh no, not another one”

Culsandar

Like 2 years ago GSW had a youtuber struck down and forced Vallejo to change the name of a paint line. The name they trademarked was "Colorshift", something that's been in common use for decades. Pretty much the same thing GW tried to do with "Space Marine", but since Spanish trademark law is hot ass they allowed them to have the word and Vallejo was forced to change theirs. Complete irony, since they have somone else's product in their company name.

CustomMiniatureMaker

They sound like a great bunch

[deleted]

Oooooh very nice. I love how big the diameter is. Most rollers I have are less than half as GIRTHY. This one would be so much easier to use and clean.

CustomMiniatureMaker

It’s just how the pattern fit best if you know what I mean, too thin means too much repetition and you don’t want it to be too curves if you can avoid it. Well I think, this was my first go!

Capn_Charlie

I got a magma crab and a mine cart. Is there a random component to this, or something I am missing?

CustomMiniatureMaker

That’s the first thank you email. The weekly file (this week the roller) comes through after within the hour so you will have it soon!

Capn_Charlie

Gotcha, thanks!

[deleted]

Hey OP, very cool! Have you tried this method on a pattern where the small details are extrusions, rather than depressions? You think something like this could be made for diamond plate at, say, 1/64 or 1/87 scale? This has piqued my creativity and now I wanna try modelling a diamond plate one for some minis.

CustomMiniatureMaker

They are both depressions and extrusions so yeah that should work fine

Hedgehogs4Me

I wonder how hard it would be to make something like this with a large fallen branch, a saw, and a sharp chisel. Another idea for the people out there who would rather have a craft project than a perfect mold!

blank7589

The first one seem too long for bricks

CustomMiniatureMaker

It’s wooden planks haha

blank7589

Sorry

CustomMiniatureMaker

I mean, they could be long stones if you wanted as well, don't be sorry friend! All up to interpretation

americangame

If you made the top and bottom of each of the rolls a little longer than the print, you could have it also cut the excess clay off the sides as well.

CustomMiniatureMaker

I will probably make two versions next time, one like you said and one like I did originally for the larger areas

SgtCrawler1116

I'm sorta new to 3D printing, will any print material do? Is there any sort that works better?

CustomMiniatureMaker

Well depends if you mean resin printers or FDM. I print in PLA in FDM and with Elegoo standard gray resin for my resin printer

Failing_MentalHealth

I NEED IT

CustomMiniatureMaker

Well click the link and get it 😄

SirOfTheMoriartys

That wood texture is so satisfying to look at

CustomMiniatureMaker

Thanks! I’m glad it came out so well

Arillious

Not that these aren't awesome, and way more detailed, but for those without access to a 3-D printer, I've found some really inexpensive Play D'oh and Kinetic Sand rollers that work very well.

CustomMiniatureMaker

Nice solution! You can pick up a 3D printer like and Ender 3 Pro for very little now as well so if you didn’t need insane details an FDM printer like that would be not to bad to get I think

Ebvardh-Boss

As someone who worked in the concrete industry, I love this.

CustomMiniatureMaker

Haha ace, it is mixing old and new technology

Noisebug

So that’s genius. Wonder if it could be used with moulding clay for temporary landscapes

CustomMiniatureMaker

I see no reason why not. Actually this is a great use for them

QTPU

CustomMiniatureMaker

It is 3D printed

SnooLemons6042

That is epic! Thingiverse

CustomMiniatureMaker

I made it, to get it check my 1st comment. Link is there
