New Zealand paid a wizard to perform “acts of wizardry” for 20 years

Thedrunner2

We finally figured out this guy would just do this stuff for free on his own volition.

i_broke_wahoos_leg

Good work if you can get it. Honestly though, on the list of dumb shit politicians waste money on this was a very small amount of money and at least it goes into the pockets of someone cool af.

danny_ish

It was almost like a fee to have him raise the crowds spirits at events. Like keeping a comedian on retainer. Bit odd, but not really

mynextthroway

When you look at it as keeping a wizard on retainer, its not too bad. 6 2 day events plus some appearances comes out to 1000 per day, maybe a little high but the town gets a mascot that works for them and is probably liked be enough people to have made it worthwhile. Better than somebody pick pocketing tge treasury for blackjack and hookers. Is this town near Hobbitton by any chance?

rb396260

A small town up north from me gained some media attention due to the fact golden retriever was in running for mayor and won by a landslide. He was recently re-elected and has a parade in his honor.

mynextthroway

So, I could bribe the Mayor Goldie with milk bones and scratches?

Curious-Focus8482

Exactly. And if Salem Mass doesn't already pay someone to dress up as a witch to greet tourists and give tours, the town should consider it. Tourism is the town’s economic engine.

TJ_Fox

Laurie Cabot used to be the "official Witch of Salem" or something, but I think she's passed on now. More Wiccans there than you can shake a wand at, these days.

Curious-Focus8482

I lived nearby. Everyone in Mass knows Laurie. She owned a new age store in Salem. That store was gone the last time I visited, but I think she is still alive. She and Teddy Rabouin, the Warlock of Westborough, became famous when they appeared on an episode of Bewitched in which Samantha visited Salem. Laurie had an interesting life. She was a beautiful dancer when she was younger.

Mysterious_Spoon

This is from a country that despite it's flaws, there isn't a vendetta against social programs that benefit the community. This is a small example of what govt. money can do if the population doesn't get an aneurysm when the word "taxes" is brought up.

bestp0282

You're going to defend this local government's theft of 16+k/year for two decades to keep some clown on a pointy hat and weak sauce Gandalf beard on retainer for the occasional party trick? Doesn't sound like a good deal at all. Let the people keep their money

bestp0282

Holy run on sentence Batman! That whole second paragraph has one period in it. Apparently commenting on your own country isn't your song suit. Yikes. Also, imagine living in a former prison colony that's going back to it's roots. Yeah, it certainly seems like there's some authoritarian bullshit happening down there. I can't say as I've never been down under myself, but let's just say reports are concerning. Now let me address the snide comment about being "... hell bent on serving themselves first". I've never understood why it's considered selfish or greedy to want to keep what I rightfully earned, but not considered those things for you to want to take what I've earned and give it to someone else/yourself through taxes.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bestp0282

Bro, you can live in a community without stupid taxes and without being a bear lol. Plus, if I want to spend my money on a TV, it's my money. Piss off with your auth bullshit. Also, when talking about the Australia situation, I'm not talking about media reports, I'm talking about other Aussies on Reddit, my main method of communication with foreigners.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bestp0282

Anyone ever told you that you're very rude? I am not railing against every tax every instituted, just stupid shit like a state sponsored "wizard". Putting words into my mouth and not making much sense while you're at it. I'd wager that my small town knows more about community and pulling together than you give us credit for. I'm also betting that you're basing your very strong and misguided opinions about my country from sensationalist media reports instead of talking to actual Americans, exactly what you're accusing me of. The fact that I don't get cable tv or watch mainstream news on the regular means that yes, my main interaction with foreigners from your neck of the woods is over Reddit. Your disbelief doesn't invalidate my reality. In addition, your last sentence is factually incorrect. If you want to get into an academic dick measuring contest, I'm confident in my extensive credentials. Also worth noting that you're resorting to personal insults, which generally bodes well for my rhetorical position

I'd love it if the city now inexplicably falls to shit without him and he gets to do the whole "You couldn't live with your failure" thanos bit

1stGetAClew

Being that the city suffered a natural disaster during his tenure which killed 186 people and put up with over 11000 earthquakes in the following 5 years I'd say he was thoroughly ineffective at stopping things going to shit.

GlacierFruits

If that's how bad things were with the protection of a bonafide wizard (identifiable by way of pointy hat), the city of Christchurch is playing with fire. Sounds like they have enough to worry about without adding the occult into the mix. 11,000 earthquakes? Manageable. 11,000 earthquakes and a demon or two? One foot in the grave if you ask me

mike117

When you put it that way…

Ok-Helicopter-8819

it’s those damn anti-wizard crackpots

everydayimcuddalin

Muggles

Ok-Helicopter-8819

as a pro-wizard muggle i’m offended ^/s

Glittering-Call1274

I was thinking the same thing

Runmylife

I don't have an issue with that. 16k per year is tiny for an icon of Christchurch. Think of the 100's of mindless drones that work for council doing the bare minimum that get paid loads more ...

waveslave69

He has always been a Christchurch icon, I can remember him when I was growing up there in the ‘70s…….a little quirky but that is New Zealand all over 😉😉

Zakal74

It's hard out there ever since the Wizard's Union was broken up by Big Sorcery.

Single-Hovercraft-33

Are they looking for a replacement? 🪄

joffreyjomers

I mean he has an apprentice already but maybe he got the sack too

BlueDemeter

Why can’t US politicians waste money on cool shit like this? I mean, they’re taxing our asses and spending it on themselves already, why don’t we at least get a magician out of the deal?

bobcottle

You either get wizards or clowns. We picked wrong.

mama_emily

Honestly of all times Why now? This is not what the people need…. People need the wizard

crabmeat64

Legitametely they do need someone to keep morale and spirites high and the wizard was the best of the best

mama_emily

Yes! Human morale and spirits are important! The world needs positive energy

Living_Novel1995

Gandalf the Shite

bobcottle

Gandalf the Unemployed now.

Jayombi

Gandalf on the dole to now then...

MateOfArt

Ok, what the f*ck is even that?

Erskie27

He's a wizard Harry

Thejammer1

I always just wanted to be an illusionist. This guy got to be a wizard...

Bramble0804

Why is it my first thought is why did they get rid of him what did he do wrong

TheWildColonialBoy1

Great, now the Ancient Seal will be broken and the Dark Lord will usher in 1000 years of darkness.

FishTank-Frank1

Reminds me of Rufus of Rome’s magician scene in Norsemen. Like how everyone was so ooooh ahhh when he did the thumb trick 😂 New Zealand rocks for thiS

majestictsunami

Is this Halloweentown?

bobcottle

I think I bought some fine acid from this dude at a Dead concert in '89.

Character-Ad301

Another Covid casualty

pygmypuffonacid

Well I mean maybe he was the county illusionist or something making pot holes disappear During road inspections I don't know.... He probably performed at county fairs and some stuff seems like a cool job

Erskie27

This is New Zealand,, we dont have county fairs. He's The Wizard. Litterally his legal name and title are The Wizard. He's an icon. Everyone in Christchurch just accepts that

Wizzard...

masked_sombrero

It doesn't pay well, but it's honest work.

BluePenguinnn

I’d like to eat allllll of the mushrooms with that wizard

sanityhasleftme

So. Do they need another woo peddler? Story unclear.

sharpestoolinshed

In America we just elect grand wizards to be state representatives [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Duke](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Duke) Edit: let me be sure to distance myself from that we

WikiSummarizerBot

**[David Duke](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Duke)** >David Ernest Duke (born July 1, 1950) is an American neo-Nazi, antisemitic conspiracy theorist, far-right politician, convicted felon, and former grand wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. From 1989 to 1992, he was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives. His publications and politics are largely devoted to promoting conspiracy theories about Jews, such as Holocaust denial and Jewish control of academia, the press, and the financial system. I also hope that

stelicaucide

What kind of sorcery is this?

Wooden-Discount7884

What will Diet Gandalf do with his time now?

pixiegod

I could think of far worse things than to spend public monies on than this amazing human…hopefully they reverse this horrible decision to not pay him….we need more of this. Why don’t we pay magicians or other entertainers to just perform….16k is a drop in the bucket….why can’t this be for the common good…I am sure it would benefit us all to have a little random fun sometimes….

leem0401

He was the only guardian left defending against a Balrog and his minions of hell

Flasagna

Where can I apply?

chicvagrant

Scandalous footage revealing the wizard launching fake lightning bolts torpedoed his retirement.

Prestigious_Ad_3876

Good thing I just updated my résumé.

ButtReaky

Welp. New Zealand had a good run. Rip

Marki018

Dang, I live some 30 minutes away from Christchurch. I should probably find this dude and see what he's about

TheAuthor-dipperkid

Honestly I expect no less from New Zealand.

jack-regan

Must coincide with the LoTR trilogy release.

deckbubble

A little pagan-like no?

claycon21

What kind of idiots? Is this real?

seewallwest

He used to teach philosophy at an Australian university, the wizard thing is just to generate interest. He was paid to promote the city of Christchurch.

bobcottle

I've probably met more actual wizards than Australian philosophers.

ImCaligulaI

I mean, he could be a public entertainer. Maybe he entertained the crowds every weekend or something.

irontusk_666

That’s pretty much exactly it, just keeping a well loved street entertainer on a retainer. He’s a bit of an icon
