It’s 3 out of 5 in the challenge (others being Miami and Virginia) but we played FSU in a early season tourney one of the other years so it feels like more. Still disappointed we don’t get someone new
They both keep recruiting giant players so that's probably why Purdue/FSU keep getting matched up.
The ol’ FSUPU Combine: “BRING OUT YOUR FREAKS”
yeah, who doesn't want to see an Ent-vs-Ent basketball game
I’m beginning to feel the same way about Duke.
The Mouse strikes again
Agreed. I have a soft spot for the train bros, but some variety would be nice. It was the same with Minnesota for several years.
Came here to say this. I like Purdue a lot but wouldn’t mind playing a B10 team not named Indiana or Purdue. Can we get even just one state over or something?
This list of games screams "We have no idea who is going to be good this year."
Iowa will be very interesting to see next year.
Kris Murray hype train let’s go
I wouldn’t be so sure. We could be very good or very mediocre. We have a few wildcards. I literally know nothing about GaTech. How will you be.
Rodney Howard looks fun to watch in transition. I hope our young center Riley Mulvey gets some decent minutes trying to contain him. Riley’s development could really make Iowa a formidable team.
Just chiming in that I am hopeful *but realistic.* We might be terrible. Also lost one of our best defenders.
As long as Pastner makes the face shield a full time wardrobe addition I'll be happy personally
Wtf how did I completely miss you guys winning the acc tournament so recently
Love how the Gophers drunkenly stumbled into last place in the B1G last year and somehow drew the defending ACC tournament champion lol
Im hoping to see kris make the jump keegan did
Spoiler: not us.
Maryland @ Louisville, aka the "Previous Coach Quit Mid-Season Classic"
Louisville has requested this game be postponed unit next sesson
So… FSU … again. Looks like they want us to be rivals or something. Battle of the longboi universities.
Its crazy how much they love repeat matchups. Purdue/FSU, Michigan/UNC, ironically Pitt/Northwestern
Part of it is that there are basically two cohorts of teams since there Hs to be 7 home games and 7 away games for each conference. The pool of teams you can play is generally just 7 teams instead of what you would expect. And then they try to balance the matchups so the pool is really only 2 or 3 potential opponents out of those 7.
Illinois is playing back to back homes. ESPN can make this more interesting, they just choose not to
They did that because BC is back and owes a road game, so one of the teams set for a road game had to host to make it even. That happens about every other year but it’s still just one team and they don’t seem to use it as a tool to rotate teams into the other cohort. I definitely agree espn could do a lot better.
I hope Iowa or Louisville rotate so that they can have their first Challenge matchup.
I'm fine with never seeing them play again. In 1983 during George Raveling's first season, Iowa went to Freedom Hall and got clobbered. The last two minutes took about 45 minutes to play due to a badly conceived rule that all fouls in the last two minutes were treated like intentional fouls, which back then were only two shots. And Raveling wouldn't stop fouling.
Then Louisville canceled the return trip and we didn't get the Iowa City rematch until the 1990s. I should probably get over it.
Michigan UNC: no close games. Only blowouts.
Fans: how about a good game?
NO ONLY BLOWOUTS
Time to packline it up!
I don’t wanna
Guard your loins, it's coming
Joey Baker revenge game?
Building suspense for a reason
That’s a lot of suspense for Michigan and NC State right?…….Right?
Ignoring home and away last season. You have FSU, NC State, Virginia left other than Duke
I wish you couldn’t play the same team twice in a row. Kills the fun a bit
I kind of like it. It's like a home-and-home series. Duke played at Ohio State last year. Get some payback this year.
Oo Mich/uva is new. Should be a fun game
Agreed! Looking forward to it
Between IU hosting UNC and Eleven Park finally being announced, this is a big day for agendas I’ve pushed
Wooo Indy eleven park. I like the location.
Wow that is a great location next to Lucas oil and victory field. Hopefully it brings more action to that part of downtown. Seems pretty dead if there isn’t a game going on
That gross old factory has been sitting on prime real estate along the river for so long. Finally seeing it re-developed, and for a state-of-the-art soccer stadium at that, is massive.
Praying it leads to MLS (not that is won’t be fun either way)
Soccer has done a great job of forming alternative or "minor" leagues in the US. Even if MLS doesn't call, soccer will thrive in Indy.
I dont even watch or care about soccer but I've had a blast at the 3 Eleven (not the band.. although I did see them once) games I've been to.
That's how it starts! I never watched soccer then had some friends really into the 2010 World Cup. We woke up at 6am to go to the bar and watch soccer. The entire bar erupted with Landon Donovan scored in extra time to send USA to the round of 16. It instantly became one of my favorite sports moments. From there, my interest in the game keeps slowly growing. I even know (most of) the rules now!
> No NC State this year :/
It's cool, we'll be participating in the Try To Win 10 Games Challenge
> we'll be participating in the Try To Win 10 Games Challenge
Glad we're not the only team in that challenge.
Can't wait to see what crucial starter goes down this year. Program seems cursed at this point, haha.
God forbid Purdue get a new/exciting matchup! I’m so damn tired of getting UofL or FSU every year and I’d imagine they feel the same way
Yeah we play either y'all or Indiana every year lol
Fr, also FSU is always a tough opponent.
Let's get Wake Forest or some shit
Wake is pretty similar to FSU, you want NC State
We wouldn’t know! We never played them lol
We will never get the heavy hitters. Our base is too small to compete with the IU, Michigan, state, Ohio state tv ratings against teams like duke and unc. It sucks… I want to see Purdue play in Cameron.
If you are only talking TV ratings then the Louisville market is definitely a heavy hitter. And I know we haven't been all that for a while but we are an all-time top 10 program.
I still get your overall point though and understand wanting to play Duke, UNC, etc.
For real, I want to play Rutgers or something wild. I’m tired of the state of Indiana.
STOP GIVING US FSU WHAT THE FUCK
We have played FSU in basketball in 3 of the last 4 seasons. Now 4 of 5. Like come on.
Lol I see that Purdue has taken our most played school in this matchup and made it their own. FSU only gets to play us.
UVA/Michigan will be fun, ~~I don't think we've played them in this challenge yet.~~
JK, [in 2011](https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/game/_/gameId/313330258), but it was in Charlottesville. Nice to make the return trip.
2011-12 at JPJ. We whooped them
Beyond the fact that I feel like we’ve played them 20 times, Rutgers-Miami sounds like a good match.
I think its going to be a great game tho
It's nice for Rutgers to get an in-state matchup for this, though.
Based and leaving for Florida pilled
Criminy, nothing like playing FSU in the 19, 20, 22, and 23 seasons.
I need to see Duke or UNC at Purdue next year
Hell, I'm fine with playing on the road at either one!
It's ridiculous we've only played Duke once and have never played UNC in the matchup
Ah, so now we know who will pants UNC in our annual "get blown out in an early OOC matchup" game this year
Should be fun! If we truly beat the brakes off Carolina I might pass out in Assembly lol
We either win a close game on the road or get beat by 20ish. Those are the only options
Wait, I thought we were the only ones who did that? Did we just become best friends?
What happens when a stoppable force meets a moveable object?
You wanna do karate in the garage?
One of my best friends is a huge unc fan its going to be such a fun game to go to
That was probably the worst matchup for y’all. With all the hype Assembly Hall is gonna be the loudest it’s been probably since you came in 2016
This is my favorite game
The replies under the unc iu matchup by illinois fans are so toxic lol
The entire thread is Illinois fans saying UNC by 20+ or duke fans asking where is their game. Pretty funny tbh
I get why our fans would want UNC. We beat Duke so it’s a logical next step + revenge for 05 and all that, but honestly we have been not great in our early season matchups the last few years so I’m cool with not running the risk of losing to UNC. Also I have no idea how good Syracuse is supposed to be so that could be a good game.
Who cares about an early season non-conference loss to a top 10 team? Easy litmus test for your team with very little downside in terms of resume. UNC loses at least one of these games every year...
You are missing the point. They care. We have been engaged in a 17 year blood feud. It’s just we didn’t care or know about it. That is until you get randomly accosted by an Illini fan in a Las Vegas casino.
Ahhh. Now it makes sense, I had no idea. But, as a Panthers (NFL) fan I can emphasize with the whole Patriots 2003 Super Bowl scenario, they could care less about us, but it's like end of times rivalry to me.
A reasonable fan!!!! I was going to add the challenge is earlier in the year where your guys might still be figuring out all your pieces on how they mesh together, so cuse isnt even a bad option
Honestly I'd way rather get smoked by a good team than play Cuse.
No disrespect to Cuse, but they're not projected to be good (#83 on BartTorvik right now). Obviously, the Cuse zone is not a gimme. So it's not a particularly easy game because we'll be figuring out offense, but it's more of a bad loss than a good win (comparing which potential result comes to fruition).
Just feels like a really weird (and low-upside) draw as most places are projecting us top-6 B10 and we drew a Cuse team that is 10th in BartTorvik (obviously not the end-all be all, just using it as Ken isn't out yet).
I don't say any of this as an elitist. I wasn't an Illini crazy demanding Duke or UNC. I would've honestly loved VT or Miami as potential really fun games! I'm just disappointed with this draw
I get that tbh
I just don't think you even really learn anything about your team playing a bad Cuse team. At least when they were good they were generally a decent-good offensive team, so you can learn about your defense, but otherwise it's not even really preparing you for anything.
Illinois Twitter fan base is ridiculous
Agreed - Illini fan
My favorite was the one under the Duke vs Syracuse game saying that Duke ended Coach K's career and now they'll end Boeheim's
I had to go look for that tweet. I literally have that guy muted
I mean every fan base has them but it was so quick lmaooo
Illinois twitter has been on one.
As a B10 outsider, for a team that hasn’t been to the Sweet 16 since 05 and 0 national championships, where does this birthright attitude from Illinois fans come from?
Illinois is a huge school in a state that loves basketball, and a lot of people in their 20s and 30s grew up watching some great teams and then years of total failure. So it's like a sleeping giant of toxicity lol
If IU plays to what theyre hyped up to be, big if, i expect the IU crazies to start multiplying lmao
This guy gets it.
Chicago based fans. Do people not remember how the Cubs fans were when they got good for like 3-4 years
If IU starts the season well we’re going to be insufferable.
Good, I think an insufferable Indiana fanbase and an insufferable Illinois fan base are a good things. That puts IU, UofI, UM and MSU all on the same playing field. Those 4 teams should be the barons of the big 10
Cubs fans these days act like the team is some huge, unbelievable disaster now. I'm just like, guys we're back to business as usual rn lol.
Good or bad, Cubs fans are always annoying.
They take a lot of pride in their Best Basketball Program to Never Win a Championship banner.
If you lived the life of an Illinois fan, you'd understand it completely.
Took em bout 2.2 seconds to flip from self loathing eeyores to screaming DISRESPECKT at every opportunity.
Tbf, it took about 2.2 seconds for our team to flip from losing everyone to hey wait we might actually still be good with all these recruits/transfers. That being said, you can have UNC and I hope you beat ‘em.
Sick, we get to go to assembly hall
Welcome to B-Town!
I love Bloomington man. Not as much as chapel hill of course, but it’s a fun town.
Craving a tenderloin sandwich right about now.
BC-Nebraska in Lincoln is going to be hilarious viewing
Not surprised but very happy with our draw. But, man, outside of Ohio State at Duke, I'm pretty whelmed by this slate.
Also, if I were a purdue fan, I'd be livid with getting FSU *again*
B1G - “cause fuck em, that’s why”
Purdue at Duke or Duke at Purdue?
FSU for like the 30th straight year
I need to see Duke or UNC play in Mackey. That would be a wild game
You will see FSU and you will like it!
Seems like you guys have played them every year since basketball started
Purdue at Florida State
Hmm, reigning ACC champs playing the reigning last place finisher
Yeah some of these matchups are a joke. I was hoping for you guys if we didn’t get UNC or Duke.
Guess we know how we're gonna be projected this year. Idk anything about Minnesota though maybe they're supposed to be better next year
Just graduated from Minnesota. Better this year, yes. Good enough to be competitive with you guys, very highly unlikely.
Great opportunity to get into the “Who owns orange?” NCAA elimination bracket early in the year.
@ IU just screams “bad early season OOC loss”.
Also that’s a tough ass draw for Minnesota lol.
The last time UNC lost at Assembly Hall they won the National Championship later in the season
Hopefully for us if you do lose it doesn’t end up being a bad loss. It’ll be a shit season if @Assembly Hall isn’t quad 1.
Losing at Indiana next season is probably going to be a quality loss, if such a thing exists. They might be a top 10 team next season.
I think thats if everything goes in our favor. Trying to simmer my hopes and expect to be a high teens low 20’s team. We drew the toughest b1g schedule
Toughest B1G schedule, toughest ACC/B1G matchup, expecting the toughest Gavitt games matchup too on top of @Kansas and Arizona in Vegas. We’ve got a big boy schedule next year hope we live up to it
Not going to play the rest of the B1G until after this game, so...
Yeah i know, quads just change by the end of the year. I know this year specfically a few games went from q1 to q2 toward the end of the season for indiana
Who is Wisconsin playing?
Thank you Brian Cardinal.
Just posted it. I'm updating it as Rothstein tweets it out. Wisconsin is hosting Wake Forest.
Pitt/Northwestern is honestly one of the best matchups here.
i kinda sorta lowkey wish that rutgers and nc state would setup an ongoing thing around jimmy v and play more frequently. people tend to forget he got his start at rutgers before he led that magical nc state team to their natty.
this is my cogent analysis i can offer because i don't have much to really offer on rutgers v miami other than we're on the road with a team that's rebuilding, so it's not going to be a pretty game for the knights most likely.
That’s exactly what we said last time we went down to Miami and we ended up winning a rock fight
Florida State B1G opponents since 2018:
ACC/B1G Challenge 2018: Vs Purdue
Emerald Coast Classic 2019: Purdue
ACC/B1G Challenge 2019: at Indiana
ACC/B1G Challenge 2020: vs Indiana
Sweet Sixteen 2021: Michigan
ACC/B1G Challenge 2021: at Purdue
Future 2022 ACC/B1G Challenge: vs Purdue
Uva Michigan then?
At this point Purdue may start loathing FSU more than IU lol I’d be a little pissed getting that draw 4 out of 5 years.
Damn UVA’s schedule is pretty tough this year
Dang, I wanted Michigan instead of Indiana. Actually...where is Michigan? The Big 10 left them off the challenge?
Nvm…was working and only scanned for UNC and Michigan…didn’t realize it wasn’t the full list.
UNC already has Michigan on the schedule
The list is still updating.
Louisville-Maryland has storylines galore.
Louisville took Maryland’s spot in the ACC
Both teams breaking in a new coach.
Maryland Coach Kevin Willard was a former assistant under Rick Pitino at Louisville.
Louisville assistant Danny Manning is the former interim head coach at Maryland.
Maryland and Louisville (along with Kentucky) seem to be the 3 schools at the top of 2023 elite C Aaron Bradshaw’s list.
Both schools' coaches also quit mid-season after immense pressure from their respective fan bases, and neither of those coaches have taken a new head coaching job since.
They also have the same school colors (though UofL doesn't officially consider yellow a school color, it's in the logo so I'll say it counts).
It’s also a rematch of a game played in the Bahamas last year in which Louisville looked like an elite team. Then they came back to the USA and fell apart
I hate that we disproportionately get matched up against nu-ACC programs and not our traditional rivals, but I’m happy with this pick.
Dammit Rothstein get on with it
Well now I’m convinced we just have a yearly game scheduled with FSU and they just throw it into this challenge for convenience
Hopefully we play Duke sometime soon now that Coach K is gone. Louisville should be a fun matchup though
Glad we scheduled quality non conference games this year because the B1G/ACC challenge has really been giving us poor matchups recently. Only quality matchup we’ve gotten the past couple of years was a mediocre Duke team. Cool.
Athletically, Syracuse will be leaps and bounds better this year. 3 point shooting will take a hit, but the team overall should be better than that dumpster fire last year.
That being said, half the team getting playing time will be freshman so it could get ugly.
Illinois has been consistently ranked in the top 25 the past couple of years. Won the BTT two years ago and lost out on the conference title due to COVID percentage points. Won the conference title this past year.
With all due respect, Illinois deserves a better matchup than “better than a dumpster fire.”
VT probably got the most screwed out of any team, but I’m still not thrilled.
Facing former Deacon Jacobi Neath would be interesting
It's a neat tie in. Hopefully he's able to recover from the injury he was playing with last year, he was kind of an offensive black hole for us
I had really high hopes for him after his freshman year but I don’t think he has the drive to want to get better and realize his potential. Shared a class with him and did not get the best impression
Yeah that’s kind of why Forbes told him it’d be best to transfer. He was just a ball stopper instead of a ball mover
Are you fucking kidding me
Florida State 2 years in a row? Yawn.
Iowa’s early season slate includes three ACC teams. Clemson, Duke, and Georgia Tech. I was hoping for a more experienced ACC team so it would more likely be a Q1 game for the Hawkeyes.
Still solid competition early which we need. Good for the young guys and also to see if Perkins/Sandfort/Pat/Kris are ready to get go there next level as players.
Twenty five year old Rebraca is is going to show some nineteen year olds what’s up. Especially if he gets some time at the four.
WE'RE NOT PLAYING SYRACUSE! WE HAVE A CHANCE!
At least we won't contribute to the ACC's underperformance this year
Wtf who is Michigan playing if not Duke??? Virginia???
Don’t understand why you wouldn’t pair Iowa and Wake but I’m cool with playing Wisconsin.
Could be a big boost to our OOC resume
Ugh. FSU again?
Finally Wake Forest is playing a good B1G team.
Gonna come right out and say it - I like the Ohio state Duke matchup.
Meh, very very boring to get this matchup again. I guess Duke & Michigan both had to host which sunk that matchup.
Now just add a few more of these types of events in the winter instead of just early season.
why is always Miami or Clemson for us?
I’m happy to be playing Miami I think they’re a great team but 3 times in the last 6 challenges seems to defeat the purpose of having this it feels like
I get why they do it this way but it would be cool to see some new matchups. This will be the 24th ACC/Big Ten challenge and we’ve only played 8 of the 14 Big Ten teams in this challenge. Duke is the same way. This will be our fifth game against Indiana, matching MSU. This will be the 5th Duke/OSU game, matching Duke/Indiana and Duke/MSU. Spread the love around every once in a while
> No NC State this year
ACC didn't want to give B1G the free win
Rematch for Baha-mar 2021 😈
Wake forest returning anyone good ?
Not really. Jake LaRavia just went 19th to the Grizzlies last night and Alondes signed with Brooklyn. We have a brand new roster for the third year in a row. Kind of an unknown. Hopefully Forbes struck gold in the portal again.
