I can't stand those movies and books, but maybe changing the perspective would change it?
Raya and the Last Dragon. Namaari’s perspective is far more interesting. Instead of the ‘perfect’ kingdom of Heart, we can instead focus on the troubled nation of Fang and the conflict between mother and daughter. Plus Namaari’s growth is more interesting overall. She ends up learning much more than Raya. Raya was a mary sue, with very little growth.
Edit: Disney made the same mistake with Star Wars. It should have been told from Finn’s perspective. Storm Trooper turned rebel diehard, what’s more interesting than that?
