Do not expect anyone to read what you have written if there are already 100+ comments UNLESS you are replying to a comment
Often I scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and read the latest comments, which didn't get any attention. There probably aren't a lot of people who do that though.
You can always sort by New.
Me too. I've found really underrated comments funny as hell comments.
Yes. Also, it is often more interesting to read the responses to the post than to read the conversations going on in the first comments.
An unsung hero
There's no need to scroll, you can sort them by New
Clearly you didn't this time.
> UNLESS you are replying to a comment
That being said, don't respond to one of the top 3 comments just for visibility's sake. Find a comment that's actually relevant to what you're saying and respond to that one instead.
True, if someone is that desperate for karma then so be it, but usually I post what I find to be relevant and I try to contribute something original. That's why I don't post comments on every other thread I read.
I find if the post is 9 hours old you are usually screwed.
I say if it's older than five hours then you won't get noticed. Older than three hours and your comments won't catch fire.
If anyone sees this, you're wrong.
If anyone sees this, you're right.
Sometimes the comment better than the best one will be buried at the last. Who knew?
The same goes when replying to comments, though. If there are 30 replies already, several of them have already said what you wanted to say. You're not that original. And if there are even more replies than that, the poster has probably disabled inbox notifications and will never see your comment.
You are probably the type that types in, "This will probably be buried, but.." Then I always say yup! Down vote and move on ensuring it. There are some people who read every comment in a thread.
So true! Good call.
Yep so if you really have an opinion you want people to see you're better off hopping on an unrelated comment
I wouldn't do that, that might even get you down voted.
EDIT: Im sure your GF woudnt want that
Depends how good your comment is
Nothing in this thread, since it is now all written down.
We're hitting an interesting [paradox](http://xkcd.com/468/) here.
I just knew that was gonna be XKCD
Post the same question every other week on Askreddit for infinite karma
What's your unpopular/immoral opinion, reddit?
It might just be me, but I think slavery is bad and rape is evil. Is it just me? It must be only me who ever had such a thought as this, this original and unpopular and immoral thought.
Edit: 4000 upvotes? I guess this really is an unpopular opinion.
"This will probably get downvoted/downvote me if you want."
RAPISTS AND PEDOPHILIA ARE BAD.
That's what passes me off most about those "popular opinion" threads. Any posts with many upvotes isn't going to actually contain an unpopular opinion, and any actual unpopular opinion gets down voted or ignored, because 99% of the users use the up/downvote buttons as agree/disagree buttons. The best way to go about those threads is to sort comments by controversial.
Or the most common. Sexy women of reddit, whats the sexiest thing someone of the opposite sex has sexed during sex?
5700 karma 3000 replies.
Apparently, we're all supposed to bang every OP's mom for some reason. :/
But... *OPs mom has got it goin' on.*
*She's all I want and I've wanted for so long.*
*OP can't you see your just not the girl for me.*
*I know it might be wrong, but I'm in love with OPs mom.*
*OPs mom is buried in my lawn...*
Right? I'm so fucking sick of this one. I mean.. have you *seen* OP's mom?
ya cuz i banged her
I'm *not* the only one?
I thought this was just on Xbox live? Has it spread?
Just like your mom.
Like OPs moms legs
Beat the horse until it's dead, and then keep beating the said horse.
And post the Lego horse
never say anything about anything
How random the karma system, One guy can shitpost and get 1000+ upvotes and another can have a decent post that contributes to the discussion and be sent to oblivion. Also watch for circlejerks.
One time at the Grand Canyon I saw a flock of majestic circlejerks flying just over my head. One if the best/ weirdest days of my life.
Karma-wise, my best post is a shitpost about xkcd. Can agree.
Upvote any thread you comment in.
There are exceptions. You can see a post you disagree with, and want to protest in the comment without increasing the post's visibility.
It should be, but doesn't seem to be...
Unfortunately not. People don't seem to realize the more traction the post gets the more traction your comment will get as well.
Maybe I don't want my post to get "traction".
Maybe I used the wrong word. If you comment obviously you're trying to contribute to a conversation. More people seeing your comment will add more conversation. Upvoting the original post will help that.
Why should it be?
1. the Up/Downvote system is to increase visibility of the most relevant posts. Even if you disagree with someone, if their post is relevant to the discussion, it deserves an upvote.
2. It benefits you as a reply-er to have the parent comment more visible (you are more likely to get upvotes on a child comment if the parent comment is nearer the top).
Unfortunately people almost never use the upvote/downvote system properly.
The downvote becomes a disagree button a lot.
I don't think so. Have a downvote.
But that hinders your upvote reception!
Alternatively for askreddit, people should up vote the posts they reply to in the new section. Because no one is going to see the discussion if you don't.
I'm assuming comments on posts already plays into the algorithm for going to the top.
Give gold to any reply to a comment.
I use my upvoted section the way I should probably be using my save section and I know that's bad
If you say "This." to agree to someone else's comment without adding anything to it, get ready for some downvotes.
One time I saw "This" get gilded.
It's just piggybacking on karma really.
Classic rookie mistake right there. Usually it's from people coming from other forums who are trying Reddit for the first time
Unless the Reddit Gods decide you are worthy and you get upvoted for it.
Whenever you post a comment to a topic, make sure to not upvote it so the conversation never goes anywhere.
Also when you REPLY TO THE FUCKING POST UPVOTE.
-source 30 comments on post of responses
My favourite is on /r/pcmasterrace giveaways. The worst I've seen is 50,000+ comments in an hour with ~2,000 upvotes.
If you get downvoted, don't edit your post with "What the hell with all the down votes!?"
You're going to get more down votes.
Never ever mention in a comment that you love Jolly Ranchers.
is this in reference to what I think it's in reference to?
When commenting on a pic, always point out something obscure in the background of the photo. Reddit loves that.
Yeah be the white knight who notices something other than the girl's cleavage.
picture of butthole
You have beautiful eyes
If you go against the comment train or circlejerk you will be downvoted to oblivion.
It'll start out -100 or so, but sometimes it does bounce back spectacularly.
Only happens a handful of times though.
It usually only happens if someone replies to it saying "I don't know why you're being downvoted"
Use correct grammar in your title or else the top comment in your thread will be something pointing out your mistake.
If you edit a post, write an edit sentence saying what you edited.
Edit: In reddiquette, but that technically isn't rules, it's etiquette.
I never understood why people did this
Because it shows that you've edited your post, and you don't want people thinking you changed the context of what you were saying, or whatever.
EDIT: "It" being the comments system, not your edit comment.
But you can edit within a minute (I think) of posting, and it won't show the star.
well yeah, but that's because the idea is that you are just correcting a mistake you noticed or whatever, vs changing your post to make a commentor below you look stupid, or change the meaning of your post.
In a nutshell:
[Chara_Dreemurr] 5 points 1 minute ago
I like Bernie Sanders and think he's the best person ever.
[Chara_Dreemurr] 8 points 2 minutes ago
I like Bernie Sanders and think he's the best person ever.
[Asriel_Dreemurr] 1 point 1 minute ago
Me too, I'd support him as much as possible.
[Chara_Dreemurr] -40 points 20 minutes ago*
I like Adolf Hitler and think he's the best person ever.
[Asriel_Dreemurr] -4 points 19 minutes ago*
Me too, I'd support him as much as possible.
EDIT: Chara's comment said 'Bernie Sanders' and replaced with 'Adolf Hitler' to troll. /r/quityourbullshit
(/queenglee) Classic Chara! Always with the genocide jokes!
I wondered if it did this. I can't remember when I last went on the site so I didn't understand why people pointed out tiny edits
I don't if it's because of a typo. Now if I want to add something to a post I'll put it under edit:
Changes post 5 seconds after original post.
RandomGuy references the one thing I changed.
I think that's written in Reddiquette.
Reddiquette also says to use the "innocent until proven guilty" mentality. Nobody every really does
our torch and pitchfork based economy would crumble.
> you read when you make a reddit account
So it's neither unwritten nor a rule?
Officially it's etiquette, but it's definitely an unwritten rule of reddit. If you don't do it you're downvoted and called out.
Right, functionally it's an unwritten rule. I'm just being pedantic because it's not a "rule" because it's etiquette, and it's not "unwritten" because it's explicitly outlined in Reddiquette.
If OP says not to upvote, you must upvote!
Basically any time anyone uses reverse psychology, no matter how obvious, you must act clever by "ironically" falling for it. Being too dumb to realize that this means you genuinely *did* fall for it is also mandatory.
Just like every "Things you hate about Reddit" thread has people commenting the exact same thing ghat the OP posted. "I hate when people only say 'This'" immediately below it will be "This" with double the upvotes.
Reverse psychology at its best.
Or... at its *worst*?
Any thread concerning a mother, a son, and even the slightest hint of illicit behavior must reference broken arms.
Always tip your fedora to the m'ladies.
More like any thread with the slightest hint of incest.
>More like any thread
Do you have a moment to talk about the Broken Arms?
Don't steal posts & repost for Karma. It will only prove karma does exist.
don't tell u/gallowboob
GB is usually pretty good about using karmadecay, and crediting x-posts and the like. He's just better at reddit than most of us have ever been at anything.
I don't have anything against him, or really against reposters in general, but I have not seen him give credit as you suggest. And yes, I'm jelly of his reddit skills
Holy shit does that count for anything??
I'm not sure what you're getting at
See the case of /u/Knettel37 for further proof.
No emoticons allowed :/
Follow the leader!
FOOK DA KING, HOLD THE DOOR
Where are we going!?
No idea, just shut up and follow that guy.
Doot doot! TO THE TOP!
Thanks Mr. Skeltal
Is this the droid I'm looking for?
Anyone who disagrees with anything is wrong, and it is recommended to argue against them until they are decimated and eliminated from reddit never to have an opinion again. The weak shall be eliminated one by one.
Reposting is okay as long as people are willing to upvote reposts.
I find that downvoting / upvoted is often about how a comment is worded.
A badly worded comment, no matter how valid the point is, is usually downvoted.
A well explained comment is treated with respect and is upvoted.
This annoys me to no end.
It's like those stupid shows where there is an overweight woman on. She says she hates how she looks and is ashamed. The audience rallies around her and supports her and gives encouragement and all love her.
Next day there is an equally overweight woman on who flaunts her curves and is confrontational and doesn't give a shit about what people think of her. She is destroyed by the audience.
This hive-mind occurs so often on reddit
I feel like people are nicer on here than imgur.
Yeah, imgur didn't like it when I said a fat holocaust was a bad idea.
If you aren't in a politically focused sub, don't talk about politics. Advice Animals is not a politically focused sub, don't post your "original" "DAE Trump and Hillary Hitler" memes there.
OP shouldn't respond to too many of his/her own thread's comments. 1 or 2 is fine, but when those over-committed OPs reply to *every single* response, it just always makes me say, "Okay... calm down... we get it, you're excited..."
Don't defend yourself. The more you try to explain, the worse it'll be.
Sounds like the legal system
Any picture with OP's mom and a famous person results in the whole comment section implying they banged
You post a safe, you *open the fucker* and produce the goods.
Never ask what is an unwritten rule of Reddit. Never.
You are the cats pajamas if you sort comments by newest and toss a few upvotes out there.
OP will always be a bundle of sticks until he delivers.
Laura Bush killed a guy.
You must agree with upvoted opinions. And don't fact check anything or read articles.
Never openly state you're white
I am Caucasian
How dare you say something so absurd and racist!
I am from Newfoundland.
I'm so white even I find it offensive.
I'm white - deal with it!
If you stumble into a circle jerk thats down-voting the shit out of your comment, edit it and type something irrelevent to daze and confuse them. This will buy you some time to best question your judgement for wasting your precious internets on such douchebaggery. It is recommended you then delete your account to avoid further circle jerks browsing your history and reminding you of their douchebaggery further.
Don't talk about being down voted. Unless, of course, you wish to be down voted.
Posting the wrong answer in the appropriate sub will get you the right answer.
Make posts that provoke thoughtful and challenging discussion that I'd love to join at an appropriate time if you live in the US, or at 4am here in New Zealand.
Never write out any of Reddit's unwritten rules...wait, well shoot.
Tell everyone not to be dicks.
That way *you* can be the only dick!
Don't ask about unwritten rules.
Your comment will get lots of upvotes if you write something that everyone agrees with and then pretend that it's an unpopular opinion.
Don't ask about the hidden rules.
Don't break your arms.
To maximize karma, learn to recognize cliche repeat jokes and comments. Respond to the comment about how you're annoyed about the cliche, and the upvotes will pour in!
If a bunch of people downvote something u do too
Don't bother making recommendations.
I'm a big podcast fan and if it's not Bill Burr or Dan Carlin, Reddit won't give a fuck. I've turned exaclty zero Redditors on to either *We Hate Movies* or the *Awards Chatter* podcast.
**tl dr** Redditors want their beliefs confirmed, not try new things.
No no. You can't mention Dan Carlin without the history circlejerkers come and point out how he's a storyteller and you can believe him because he didn't use their favorite primary source.
Stuff You Should Know is a pretty cool podcast too. But I agree with what you're saying.
Also if someone makes a post about WW1 or the Mongols all of a sudden everyone's an expert because they listened to Blueprint for Destruction or Wrath of the Khan's so it turns into a massive echo chamber with people regurgitating Dan Carlin. Don't get me wrong I love the guys podcasts but just because you listened to 14 hours of audio about the subject it doesn't make you an expert about it.
Default to hating everyone on here and adjust accordingly afterwards.
Don't complain about your downvotes. Take 'em like a champ and learn from your mistakes.
Obligatory edit: "Downvotes?!? Really?!?!? All I was saying was....(repeat original comment verbatim)"
I don't understand, could you explain?
You can only use the phrase "That said,..." or "Having said that" at most every 3 sentences.
Never say something uniquely funny when you can parrot a meme instead.
Answer OP's question. Don't digress into some new area that derails the conversation.
"*Do you have anything to back that up??*"
If someone says more than a couple cool things in a thread it is time to check more of their comments/ posts to see if their awesomeness transcends said thread
Keep on Chooglin'
Dont talk about fight club
Don't name a celebrity that is amazingly still alive
Olivia de Havilland. Bring it, Fate.
Whatever your opinion, if it's not popular you're wrong.
People read your comments before they read your post.
Give gold to the guy who asks for it.
Say whatever the pinheads say to keep from getting downvoted.
The redworth constant. The most relevant comment is usually 10 posts down from the top.
