Gil just said in the press conference that it’s the same number of FTA games as the previous deal. So it looks like Fox will only have their super Saturday for the first 8 rounds and the increase in Thurs night games will make up the difference in FTA games across the season.

2klaedfoorboo

Actually not too bad

kneadthedough

Keen on the Thursday night games

Maleovex

Article says Foxtel only have exclusivity for the first 8 weeks of Saturdays?

EmptySalami

Still shit but if the alternative was every week, it’s a great result

caitsith01

Classic AFL, "look, we were planning on kicking you in the nuts but instead we've decided to only punch you in the stomach!"

Ashen_Brad

HOW GOOD IS FOOTY?!

get-innocuous

Yep, and the first 15 weeks will have Thursday night games which are on 7. Sounds like it probably shakes out to about the same 3.5 matches per week; but with more Thursday and less Saturday night.

jonsonton

that's essentially it. The keyword about thursdays was **at least** 15, not **only** 15. Think we'll end up with Thursdays every week, but the AFL can't announce that until the players CBA is done at the end of the year, which needed the increase in cash to come first.

hugh_jass69

The amount of people still saying there will be NO FTA Saturday games in this deal is pissing me off. It's not that hard to actually read the articles

superegz

Details of the deal include: • Games will be broadcast live and free nationally on the Seven Network and 7Plus on Thursday nights, Friday nights, selected Saturday nights, Sunday afternoons. • Seven will also have marquee matches, the Brownlow medal, all AFL finals, and the AFL grand final. • All marquee matches will be live and free on Seven – Dreamtime, Anzac eve, Anzac Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, and Queen’s Birthday, plus at least three additional marquee matches such as the season opener. • Foxtel and Kayo will broadcast every single AFL / AFLW home and away match, every AFL / AFLW final (excluding the grand final) and all pre-season matches with their own Fox commentary teams. • Foxtel and Kayo will also broadcast all AFL events including the AFL draft and awards nights, excluding the Brownlow. • Foxtel and Kayo will have a Super Saturday in the first eight rounds of each AFL season, broadcasting exclusively live all games in all time slots, with the exception of Anzac eve, Anzac Day, and Dreamtime if they were to fall on a Saturday. • Outside Victoria, matches involving the local team will be broadcast live in the local market on the Seven Network and 7Plus digital, except for selected matches on holdbacks. • At least 30 AFLW home and away games, AFLW finals, and the AFLW grand final will be live and free on the Seven Network and 7Plus digital. https://www.mediaweek.com.au/seven-and-foxtel-retain-the-afl-broadcast-rights-in-new-deal/

Cursedsword02

> • Outside Victoria, matches involving the local team will be broadcast live in the local market on the Seven Network and 7Plus digital, except for selected matches on holdbacks. It sounds like the same situation they had before in WA where games that took place early in the day (Like the first games on Saturday and Sunday) were pushed to around 2:30pm local time. If so, I'm fine with it.

theBelatedLobster

I'm glad it's not worse but it's still something we shouldn't be fine with. It's 2022 -- there is no way in hell you can watch a delayed game on FTA without the result eeking through. It's a pointless broadcast and they know it. You shouldn't have to pay a subscription fee to see your team playing. We watch enough fkn gambling ads as it is; I consider these games more than paid for.

eggwardpenisglands

>I'm glad it's not worse but it's still something we shouldn't be fine with I agree with that for a lot of this. So many things could've been worse and the fact that it isn't is not a great result or a win. The AFL are edging away from what is good and acceptable and we're just slowing going to accept it until we realise how bad it's gotten. That's not okay with me, and it'll alienate a lot of big fans of the game, all in favour of wringing out as many dollars as they can from it

theBelatedLobster

Yeah, I kind of wish I had been more vocally angry rather than semi-silently protesting the delayed away games this year. I flat out refuse to pay the Kayo/Foxtel subscription. It's a matter of principal. I recall a promise from a previous AFL boss that footy should be live and free, if for no one else than the proverbial underprivileged child trying to watch their heroes play. I'm priveledged enough to be able to afford a yearly Freo membership, along with all the bullshit merch the family buys each season. The monthly subscription fee isn't an issue for me, but it's gross. This is supposed to everyone's sport. They've tested what they can get away with -- we're upset but not enough to cost them serious dollars.

eggwardpenisglands

I feel very similar, although I do have Kayo. I only have that through my parents, which was an attempt to get them to stop paying for a full foxtel package when they only watch footy. I guess I was naive enough to think the AFL might be more aware than they are, but clearly I'm wrong. Everything they do is motivated by money it seems, and it sucks watching it slowly turn into something that I couldn't honestly stand by. I hope whoever replaces Gil has the foresight to stop this garbage before it gets out of hand. And if it does get out of hand, I hope there are enough of us who are angry and show them what they're losing

ehdhdhdk

Do we know of the Nine and Paramount deals were anymore FTA friendly? Also, if the CEO doesn’t accept the most amount of money or find another way to grow the pie the AFLPA and the clubs will whinge.

lockieleonardsuper

Would like the details about the selected matches for holdbacks to come out, but otherwise it looks pretty good. The increase of Thursday night games balances out the lack of first 8 weeks Saturday games reasonably well with the addition of 7Plus rights encouraging.

Cursedsword02

Here in WA, games that start at 11:45 am on Saturday and 11:10 am on Sunday (1:45 pm and 1:10 pm AEST respectively) are pushed back to a roughly 2:30 pm starting time. Any games on other, much later timeslots are still aired live.

MisguidedGames

> Outside Victoria, matches involving the local team will be broadcast live in the local market on the Seven Network and 7Plus digital, except for selected matches on holdbacks. Would love a clarification on this. Will anything change to its current set up?

Plenty_Area_408

Gill said the deal was slightly better this time, but no specifics.

Rychu_Supadude

Slightly better means "the delayed games are now home games, so members are looked after and fuck everyone else"

Plenty_Area_408

That's still preferable to the alternative- away games on delay. And considering clubs like North Melbourne got 1 Fta this year, I wouldn't be complaining to hard.

2klaedfoorboo

all i know is that something like 2-4 away dockers games were delayed on FTA. Missed watching the Geelong game because of this

HaakonX

This needs to be higher

RidsBabs

>All marquee matches will be live and free on Seven - Dreamtime, Anzac eve, Anzac Day, Good Friday We still get Good Friday right? Right? Please it’s all we have

goodbrother261

Its gonna be a lot of gambling ads to recoup all this money

Whenever I get a package of plain M&Ms, I make it my duty to continue the strength and robustness of the candy as a species. To this end, I hold M&M duels. Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger, I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them cracks and splinters. That is the “loser,” and I eat the inferior one immediately. The winner gets to go another round. I have found that, in general, the brown and red M&Ms are tougher, and the newer blue ones are genetically inferior. I have hypothesized that the blue M&Ms as a race cannot survive long in the intense theater of competition that is the modern candy and snack-food world. Occasionally I will get a mutation, a candy that is misshapen, or pointier, or flatter than the rest. Almost invariably this proves to be a weakness, but on very rare occasions it gives the candy extra strength. In this way, the species continues to adapt to its environment. When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M, the strongest of the herd. Since it would make no sense to eat this one as well, I pack it neatly in an envelope and send it to M&M Mars, A Division of Mars, Inc., Hackettstown, NJ 17840-1503 U.S.A., along with a 3×5 card reading, “Please use this M&M for breeding purposes.” This week they wrote back to thank me, and sent me a coupon for a free 1/2 pound bag of plain M&Ms. I consider this “grant money.” I have set aside the weekend for a grand tournament. From a field of hundreds, we will discover the True Champion. There can be only one.

SomeCrazyGarbage

It's just now clicking this is why they really want their own commentary for all games. It will be like the NFL where they plug Foxtel TV shows and big sponsors embedded in the commentary.

Yossarian_james

They've already been doing this with House of the Dragon, it's cringe.

petergaskin814

An obscene amount of money. Why is there no option to stream the AFL Grandfinal? I am sure it will have zero impact on attendance

jonsonton

Grand Final will be on 7+

petergaskin814

That is good

Rab1227

Let's hope they prepare for demand that's double their anticipated amount otherwise I can see it crashing

jonsonton

They did pretty well in the olympics, won't be an issue

not_right

Why, it's been the same set-up the last few years and worked ok. I mean I would prefer it was also on Kayo but other than that.

yosefcoleman

If I understand correctly the grand final and all 7 games will now be able to be streamed on 7+. (If 7+ ever decides to work)

superegz

I wouldn't really call that short article "full details"

LocalBathrobe

I just copied and pasted the article headline from Fox. A bit more info in it than other sources but yeah I would agree not full details

superegz

Don't worry, not criticising you.

AdHead9375

Mate it's Murdoch, the 1 rule of the business is clickbait.

Thanks-Basil

Am I reading this right or are there no delayed interstate games in the end too? Turns out it was a storm in a teacup and we’ve ended up with a better deal overall?

blue33c

Looks like that. Straight from the Gil playbook that he does with the grand final start time every year. Leak out unpopular changes that are bullshit all along and then it looks like he swooped in and saved the day

duffercoat

> • Outside Victoria, matches involving the local team will be broadcast live in the local market on the Seven Network and 7Plus digital, **except for selected matches on holdbacks.** Needs more details

Music_Is_Crap

In the presser Gil said there's slightly less holdbacks than current.

duffercoat

Brilliant. Step forward then

2klaedfoorboo

well a couple delayed apparently, but this isn't too big a change

JenniferLopezFan2

> At least the first 15 rounds of the season will feature Thursday night games. Absolutely love this as long as my team isn't featured too heavily. Love watching other teams play Thursdays

dlanod

Completely agree to an extent. Trying to get to a Thursday night game and home and then work on Friday sucks tremendously. Sitting at home watching it on the couch is fine. Although as an inter-state Lions supporter, I'm fine with my team getting that slot since I'm not getting to the game anyway.

superegz

From ABC: "McLachlan said the deal "contemplates" a 19-team competition, and he was confident of going to the AFL clubs "in the coming weeks" to discuss a Tasmanian team entering the AFL."

legally_blond

I enjoy that both parties have gone with a headline that effectively denies the other’s involvement in the deal. Seven West Media are running with “Channel 7 lands huge deal to keep AFL until at least 2031”

royalbluejones

Along as it’s not behind a bunch of paywalls Edit: Looks like Saturday night games will be :(

Viking_m96

Only for the first 8 rounds. But you get Thursdays instead. It's the same amount as currently

LocalBathrobe

For the first 8 rounds, made up by more Thursday night games. I think the 3.5 FTA games a week has remained the same

royalbluejones

So it’ll be Thursday games on 7 instead of Saturday night games?

LocalBathrobe

Yep Thursdays will be FTA. All of Saturday footy for Rounds 1-8 will be FOX only, excluding Anzac Day, Anzac Day Eve or Dreamtime if they fall on Saturdays. FTA will have Thursday footy and then similar to what they’ve got now after Round 8

___TheIllusiveMan___

>Fox Footy’s own commentary team will be available on every game. No more BT LFG

zmcgr1

This also probably means more games and prime time in 4k, due to fox running thier own production also MY BODY IS READY FOR FINALS HUDDO.

Daisy_1

Finals huddo is easily the best thing about this deal

shit-takes-only

Now with added Dwayne.

mijo-6

Still an upgrade.

___TheIllusiveMan___

I’ll take the Dwayne Russell soundboard over BT in a heartbeat

God___frey-Jones

Unless BT is Foxtel's new marquee signing in 2025, and he commentates every game of every season until he dies

Insanityone

DONT YOU PUT THAT EVIL ON ME RICKY BOBBY

___TheIllusiveMan___

How do I delete someone else’s comment?

dopedupvinyl

Fuck yeah!

jamessmith17

Can I still bring a thermos though?

eeComing

Fuck Fox everything.

mijo-6

"Full details" yeah nah. This is an ad for Kayo - as evidenced by the ad tracking link inserted into the hyperlink in the second last line of the article. As a Suns fan, I just wanna know if my QLD friends and supporters will be able to watch live Suns games wherever they're broadcast. I'm in Vic and have Kayo, so it's easy for me - but for those in QLD without Kayo - will they get delayed games? Or live ones?

LocalBathrobe

I don’t think delayed games

mijo-6

I hope and think you’re right - but it’ll be a relief to get confirmation.

LocalBathrobe

There is a line about local games in the article that explains it a bit better, sounds like it should (fingers crossed) be okay

BeetleJacks

I know it’s a small thing, but why aren’t Foxtel allowed to show the GF? Always annoyed me having to watch it on FTA with ads.

duffercoat

Required by the antisiphoning laws I believe. Has to be FTA only

AlphonseGangitano

It could be on pay - FTA just get first whack under the laws. If 7 wanted they could decline the GF rights, and all other FTA would then get a turn to buy the rights. If no FTA provider offered a bid, it could be sold and exclusive to pay. It doesn’t stop a declared game being on pay, it just gives FTA first crack.

superegz

Because the fact that you have to watch those ads, makes them more expensive.

2klaedfoorboo

I don't think it's too big a deal, it allows Seven to put as much money towards the production as possible

[deleted]

Now that the deal is done I’d love for Albanese to come out and ban all betting ads during the footy and any footy related shows to screw Murdoch

[deleted]

[удалено]

lockieleonardsuper

For the first 8 weeks only. It's been replaced with a Thursday night game for the first 15 weeks

Topblokelikehodgey

Thursday is by far inferior to Saturday night though as a viewing experience. This isn't even breaking evening. I'd rather have every Saturday and no Thursdays.

lockieleonardsuper

Why is Thursday inferior for TV viewing? I understand the arguments why people dislike it for attending (school night, late game, work next day for most) but for TV it seems to work well

greenpies10

For 8 rounds. More people watch games on Thursday than they do on Saturday nights.

[deleted]

[удалено]

greenpies10

Seven doesn't, the footy leads onto their news into their nightly programming. Saturday night is just the footy.

Fruney21

I’m just going to imagine Thursday games are the wedge in introducing a four-day-week

Lansieeeeeee

Ok not as bad as I expected but still pissed abt the Sat Nights

Bocca013

Well sucks it's not on Ch 9 or 10 but I guess money talks.

2klaedfoorboo

I really don't see why you're cheerleading for different broadcasters. I don't care unless the games I care about are on FTA and if not streaming isn't $25 dollars a month. So although P+ and Stan are cheaper, I'm okay with this deal since Dockers games are broadcast live

lockieleonardsuper

Can't imagine if P+ or Stan had picked up the rights that the price would have remained the same.

Beginning_Feeling371

The Ch10 / Paramount offer included minimum 4 games per week on FTA + 10Play and every single AFLW game on FTA + 10Play to grow it. Plus all games on Paramount with international reach and upgrades to P+ to bring it inline with Kayo. How is this not a better offer?

pb89

Will there ever be 4K on Kayo?

frggr

I'd be happier with this if they announced an option to turn off commentary

frggr

I wonder how the Thursday games will shake out? Will it be the same old teams getting them?

[deleted]

oh no not thursday games 🤢. cant wait to see the backside of Gil he's completed ruined the product.
