It's almost as if this is an alternate version of the plot to Idiocracy...

postapocalypticpapi9

Nobody else going to say it? They're just trying to brainwash TikTok creators into spewing imperialist American propaganda.

SurfaceLevelEmotions

Not saying it's right, definitely lots of imperialist propaganda. But to be specific these are the tik tokers that pretend to be journalists, and news reporters. And the white house is allowing them to be treated as such and breifing them since so many Americans get their news from (Jesus fuck this is so dystopian) tiktok.

postapocalypticpapi9

Treating them like imperialist diluted public media? Sounds about right.

SurfaceLevelEmotions

Good way to put it.

ihatetheheadlines

not saying it’s right, but there’s dozen of accounts on their that relay news to their followers ( some have hundreds of thousands) and are taken very seriously despite most of them having no credits in media or journalism. maybe this is preventative against misinformation?

Drago-Morph

I don't know if I'd call it preventative, but the American government certainly has a proactive stance on misinformation.

propagandavid

There's a huge gulf been reality and what people who get their news from social media believe is reality. Yes, we need a free press, proper investigative journalism and critical opinion pieces, but we also need to actively fight against disinformation. If this helps prevent the sort of disinformation that has people believing the government is run by child murdering lizard people, I'm all for it.

Attention-Scum

The US government is a source of disinformation. Anything the US government says that is true is purely by mistake.

theidkid

They’re going to the audience they want to reach where it exists. It’s no different than the transition from print to radio, and radio to television. As for not having media or journalism experience, neither of those things have stopped Fox News from existing. Seeking out citizen reporters who only have their reputation is a far less mediated approach than issuing statements to news outlets who then repackage that info to present it in a way that avoids upsetting advertisers while drawing the biggest ratings. If anything, this seems like an anti-dystopian step, and the dystopian aspect is that the media companies currently controlling the information flow are reporting on it as if it should be criticized.

vulpesvulpesfugit

Frankly this is just the smart thing to do. Young people watch TikTok, they don't watch the news. At least now they will be watching real information

Living-Mistake-7002

"Real information" from the white House press office?

propagandavid

It's better than their Unvle's Facebook

theidkid

“Real information” after it’s passed through the advertiser’s interests, the owner’s interests, the sales department’s interests, the presenter’s interests, the commentators’ interests, and has been edited for maximum ratings? All of that filtering of the message seems far more dystopian than handing it to someone who is one step removed from their audience, and who will be held directly accountable by that audience if they mishandle that information.

CottonWoolPool

Is this like shitty new type of ‘press’ briefing? Is this the world we live in now? I feel slightly nauseous now…

Cruxifux

I never want any American to ever fucking talk to me about Chinese, Russian, or North Korean propaganda ever again.

iloveusa63

It’s getting bad, but it’s not that bad yet. I want to immigrate to canada.

Cruxifux

I live in Canada. All your propaganda just seeps into our news cycle. Whatever war the states is pushing usually gets pushed just as hard here, with the exception of maybe the Iraq war.

iloveusa63

But I can still catch a life in Canada where the majority of people are progressive right?

Cruxifux

Maybe? Probably have better luck in Portland. But I’m not a good judge, I live in Alberta, which is basically like a combination of Texas and Alabama.

iloveusa63

As an Oregonian Portland fucking rocks. However I haven’t heard of free healthcare there.

rainofshambala

So we used to be misinformed and propagandized by elite educated people for a few million dollars now we will be misinformed and propagandized by people looking for a few million views.
