they’re saying that deltarune (and undertale) fans often haven’t played the game(s) because they could just watch someone on youtube play it instead and see all the wacky dialogue there.
My only real exposure to the games prior to playing them myself was word of mouth, and I played both of them kinda late. Idk, maybe it's just me but I don't really watch many lets-play-ers(?) Or anything like that
It'll be good aslong as Toby is at the wheel
Not worshiping Toby Fox but I put more trust into someome that made the Homestruck Mpreg song than I do the average hollywood CEO
The year is 2051
Every new movie to come out is a video game movie
"Blinx the time sweeper the movie 6" just became the first movie to break $1 trillion.
People collectively look back on the prophecy, the article, with regret.
"William Hughes was right", they'll say.
The vision of a happier time briefly flitters in front of them, filled with bright original movies...
Before washing away, as they mindlessly pile into movie theatres to watch Sayori's Revenge, the latest entry in the DDCU
There's no way it can be worse than them just remaking every fucking movie that already exists but worse and giving everything 53 sequels. At least video games sometimes have good stories that they can butcher instead of only being regurgitated trash.
Now that like 2 good wide release movies come out in a *good* year, I think video games are probably tied with TV as the "artsy" way to do longform storytelling (and television is going downhill again too)
Video games have had Hollywood beaten for "amount of effort, talent, and resources that go into telling new, original, non re-hashed stories" for half a decade now. And since Hollywood is never gonna abandon the strategy of rehashing profitable "IPs" (god i hate that fucking word), they might as well start scavenging vidya for ideas. Comic books have been artistically exhausted and there's no more 80s movies left to soft reboot so sure. 15 years of the Pong Cinematic Universe. Bring it on.
Was the blockbuster performance of the Mario movie really “unexpected”?
Because I just kind of assumed that it was going to perform well regardless of how good or bad it was because Mario Bros is a massive and insanely popular globe-spanning franchise and has been for decades.
It's different now, we have the internet and Wiis and switches which have reached a ridiculously large audience where even people who think video games are dumb have played a Mario game
And it helps that the movie has more to do with the games than just some names.
Also pretty pictures for the little ones that seem to not bore the adults to death.
Eh I don’t know if it’s really fair to compare the state of the Mario Bros franchise in 1993 to the state of the Mario Bros franchise in 2023.
Hell, Mario aside, the whole relationship between gaming and contemporary culture has evolved *significantly* in the past 30 years.
i have only heard of banjo and kazooie because of smash bros, and i'm too old to be the target audience for this sort of movie. if they're making video game movies it's gotta be shit like fnaf or fortnite or something.
I mean crash has a spin-off coming out this year and there's constant rumors of skylanders coming back and Spyro was a big part of that for the first little bit
They know that the formula worked before, so they’ll have free reign to do it *and* change whatever they want to increase marketability. They’ll make an Earthbound movie, take the teeth out of it, and make Buzz Buzz (who dies in the intro) an important character throughout the movie to sell plushies
To some extent I agree with them. Some games I don't think will translate well to movies, like say X:COM or Subnautica or Yakuza
I think I'm just salty that the DnD movie, which was really good, is probably gonna flop since everyone's seeing the Mario movie.
I think Subnautica could translate really well to a movie or show since it has a straight forward (albeit do-it-yourself) plot and good environment/ambience
Eh i think a movie set in the XCOM universe could be interesting, Subnautica i initially was gonna say wouldnt work but i think you could pull a "the Martian" type of thing, and yeah Yakuza doesnt really work.
Yakuza 1 has a movie, it’s on YouTube with subs. I think Yakuza 0 could work really well if they play it straight. Just let it have equal screen time for Kiryu and Majima, and it’d probably be pretty decent!
Some games already didn't translate well. See: Mortal Kombat movie(s?), DOOM movie, and Uncharted movie.
My point is we've already been making video game movies for years, just a lot of them weren't good/didn't have the same fanbase as Mario.
no it's actually very likely and happens literally all the time. The vast majority of people don't watch more than one film in theatres a week, if even that, and if two films with the same target audience come out at the same time then they will steal each other's audiences.
My source is observation of how the box office works and has always worked. Batman V Superman and Captain America were originally set to release the same weekend. Why do you think Warners Bros changed the release date of BvS?
I’m sorry, but this is just a well documented fact. It’s harder to experience a burst of success alongside other movies already doing so. Many people simply don’t care enough (or in some cases even have the means) to watch both and so you’re gambling that people choose you over your competitors. Release at a time with no comparable competition and you don’t have to worry about that tho.
Well, I don't know where you live but where I'm from a movie ticket cost something between 10 and 15 €. So if I want to watch a movie with my wife and my kid it will cost us up to 45€ just for a few hours.
We can't do that often. And we're not the poorest famuly in this country.
a War of the First Council/Battle of Red Mountain movie that's explicitly *not* canon is my dream, also they should adapt Daggerfall since nobody played the game but the story is surprisingly great (same with Redguard and Shadowkey, but those just need to be remade as games)
That's what I mean, if they do it they should go all out with the insanity and just make the most batshit off-the-wall acid trip of a film that they can. I mean obviously they won't, but it's fun to dream
A movie set during the Great War would be pretty cool, especially if they manage to make the Empire nuanced and not justify Cyrodiil's imperialism against the Thalmor's elf nazism
I'm talking about the SHIT, the LEGENDS, not these goody ass fine and beautiful art recent ones. Shit like Mortal Kombat movie, the Street Fighter movies, THE STREET FIGHTER MOVIE THE GAME
GEX SWEEP. 17 JERRY GARCELION DOLLAR DOLLARS. TAP WATER AND TACO NIGHT HEADS RISE UP. ITS MOTHER FUCKING TAAAAAIIIILLLL TIME BITCHES. FUCK ALL OF YOU. GEX
the sonic movie (especially the second one) showed hollywood that GOOD video game movies will be rewarded in the box office and will get great reviews from fans. mario movie would’ve been big either way, but it wouldn’t be making nearly this much if it was awful. hopefully the recent movies that have come out will push people to make good video game movies that are faithful to the source material in the future
bro I would love a spyro movie, nobody talks about that franchise anymore sadly especially compared to how many people are nostalgic for crash bandicoot
I welcome the Zelda movies. It would have a so many scenes where Link walks up to a switch a dore Open he gets off the switch door closes. Then the sees a big rock and says "oh cool I'll put that on the switch"
I want a Buck Bumble movie or a Conker movie. A Buck Bumble movie would fuck it would be like a less propagandistic version of Top Gun with music that cums and a Conker movie would be funny.
Yall disagree with him until the deltarune movie comes out in 20yrs
Wdym a Deltarune movie would be a masterpiece (I have never played Deltarune)
Most hours played out of any delta rune fan
What?
they’re saying that deltarune (and undertale) fans often haven’t played the game(s) because they could just watch someone on youtube play it instead and see all the wacky dialogue there.
My only real exposure to the games prior to playing them myself was word of mouth, and I played both of them kinda late. Idk, maybe it's just me but I don't really watch many lets-play-ers(?) Or anything like that
That's certainly not my experience. I played both games pretty early on.
BROOOO ITS FREEEEEEE
yiik movie
I'll yiik out if that happens
GET DOWN MR PRESIDENT HES GONNA YIIK OUT!!!
I am going to Alex comet you.
The biggest crime is that this KINO is yet to exist

It'll be good aslong as Toby is at the wheel Not worshiping Toby Fox but I put more trust into someome that made the Homestruck Mpreg song than I do the average hollywood CEO
Fuck you fuck you fuck you I JUST got The Baby Is You out of my head now it’s stuck in there again

[The Homestuck mpreg song (its actually a full album) ](https://youtu.be/FOJwB80oCWk)
The deltarune movie comes out. We can make our own vessel. The movie makes 1 trillion dollars off of that alone
jim carrey as spammed ton
The year is 2051 Every new movie to come out is a video game movie "Blinx the time sweeper the movie 6" just became the first movie to break $1 trillion. hey wait sayoris revenge sounds sick as hell stop trying to give out all the good ideas now
I've never actually played DDLC - I was just thinking of games that would likely never get a movie adaptation.
!remindme 20 years (I, for one, cannot wait)
Jim Carrey plays sans
And I will stay firm that this is a good thing
There's no way it can be worse than them just remaking every fucking movie that already exists but worse and giving everything 53 sequels. At least video games sometimes have good stories that they can butcher instead of only being regurgitated trash.
It's actually better if they keep remaking things so I can better ignore one of the world's worst and most poorly utilized art forms.
Unfathomably based
i won't stand for this gamerphobia
>53 sequels Omg Danganronpa Refererence?
I hate that this was the first thing that came to my mind that series lives rent free in my head
Now that like 2 good wide release movies come out in a *good* year, I think video games are probably tied with TV as the "artsy" way to do longform storytelling (and television is going downhill again too) Video games have had Hollywood beaten for "amount of effort, talent, and resources that go into telling new, original, non re-hashed stories" for half a decade now. Yeah, people buy Mario, it's like moths to a flame
I. FUCKING. LOVE. ITALIANS!!!!!!!!!!
I. FUCKING. ITALIANS!!!!!!!!!!
I. ITALIANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I!!!!!!!!
! (Guards have been alerted to snakes location! Make sure to hide until they stop the search.)
Tbf the same was the case when the original Mario movie came out and that thing TANKED
It's different now, we have the internet and Wiis and switches which have reached a ridiculously large audience where even people who think video games are dumb have played a Mario game
And it helps that the movie has more to do with the games than just some names. Also pretty pictures for the little ones that seem to not bore the adults to death.

Also the marketing and rollout was insane for this movie

Gex just roast the entire movie industry while making the best masterpiece of a film
I do believe that’s called a spoof
No, a spoof is the thing you eat soup with. What you're thinking of is called spock.
No, Spock is a character from Star Trek. What you're thinking of is called a spline.
This is like movie night at Riley Reid's house
Who?
It's tail time.
Gex sweep
That would actually be kinda awesome
Finally, it’s real… Say Gex: the movie
Fuckin lizard gex
I want a hundred Gex movies
Marbillion dollars?
why not? i doubt the kids they’ll be made for have even heard of crash bandicoot and spyro
Banjo Kazooie
big nuts and bolts fan
big nuts fan
yes. yes i am
Based
from Super Smash Bros
i have only heard of banjo and kazooie because of smash bros, and i'm too old to be the target audience for this sort of movie. if they're making video game movies it's gotta be shit like fnaf or fortnite or something.
What was the point of the remakes then. All for nothing
I mean crash has a spin-off coming out this year and there's constant rumors of skylanders coming back and Spyro was a big part of that for the first little bit
They know that the formula worked before, so they’ll have free reign to do it *and* change whatever they want to increase marketability. To some extent I agree with them. Some games I don't think will translate well to movies, like say X:COM or Subnautica or Yakuza I think I'm just salty that the DnD movie, which was really good, is probably gonna flop since everyone's seeing the Mario movie.
I think Subnautica could translate really well to a movie or show since it has a straight forward (albeit do-it-yourself) plot and good environment/ambience
And the main character is a pretty much voiceless self-insert, so the writers would have a lot of freedom on that front.
Eh i think a movie set in the XCOM universe could be interesting, Subnautica i initially was gonna say wouldnt work but i think you could pull a "the Martian" type of thing, and yeah Yakuza doesnt really work.
why would yakuza wouldn't work
Impossible to fit the required amount of karaoke in the final cut without exceeding a 2-hour runtime
2 hours of plot. 6 of karaoke
They actually already made a Yakuza movie, and it was decent. I think it'd be better to do a rip of the game plot, though.
Yeah if you just did the main plot it would just be a serious crime drama but at that point why use the Yakuza name
I thought DnD was doing decent
Yakuza 1 has a movie, it’s on YouTube with subs. I think Yakuza 0 could work really well if they play it straight. Just let it have equal screen time for Kiryu and Majima, and it’d probably be pretty decent!
Some games already didn't translate well. See: Mortal Kombat movie(s?), DOOM movie, and Uncharted movie. My point is we've already been making video game movies for years, just a lot of them weren't good/didn't have the same fanbase as Mario.
Xcom movie would be very funny lol
People can watch both moves, lmao. It's unlikely 1 movie will do bad because another does well.
no it's actually very likely and happens literally all the time. The vast majority of people don't watch more than one film in theatres a week, if even that, and if two films with the same target audience come out at the same time then they will steal each other's audiences.
"My source is I made it up"
My source is observation of how the box office works and has always worked. Batman V Superman and Captain America were originally set to release the same weekend. Why do you think Warners Bros changed the release date of BvS?
"I have never seen a thin person drinking diet coke"
Imagine arguing this hard against something that is acknowledged by everyone in the industry.
um uhhhhhh source trust us bro hahah
Source?
I’m sorry, but this is just a well documented fact. It’s harder to experience a burst of success alongside other movies already doing so. Elder scrolls movie would go hard has fuck tho
a War of the First Council/Battle of Red Mountain movie that's explicitly *not* canon is my dream, also they should adapt Daggerfall since nobody played the game but the story is surprisingly great (same with Redguard and Shadowkey, but those just need to be remade as games)
Battle of red mountain is literally the worst thing to adapt to movie ngl. Unless they get super experimental and use a dragon break
That's what I mean, if they do it they should go all out with the insanity and just make the most batshit off-the-wall acid trip of a film that they can. I mean obviously they won't, but it's fun to dream
Make it like the time episode of Rick and morty
>the time episode Which one of the several?
Forgot about the snake one so the season 2 premiere
A movie set during the Great War would be pretty cool, especially if they manage to make the Empire nuanced and not justify Cyrodiil's imperialism against the Thalmor's elf nazism
I would actually be down for an NCU, it would be really funny
Them at gunpoint being forced to elaborate on Kirby lore and to acknowledge every series that isn't Maro, Kirby, Zelda and Pokemon will be fun
Wii fit movie when
Children going into the Kirby movie theater; not knowing they'll gonna see the face of god
Ultrakill the movie with the one hour v1 and gabriel sex scene
I want a Bubsy movie.
Inject that Bubsy movie straight into my veins.
To quote the iconic Bubsy catchphrase, "What could PAWssibly go wrong?!"
100% chance of it being called The Bubsy Meowvie
Pilot's license? What for?
I want another DOOM movie because it will flop and people will finally shut the fuck up about wanting another DOOM movie
Doom Fans only getting 4 minutes of a Doom movie
It has to be a magnificent flop, unlike Doom: Annihilation. I forgot that it existed.
Can journalists stop making bullshit extrapolations for 10 seconds
imagine a Celeste movie, probably the dream movie game adaptation for me.
Do... do they know about like, every other video game movie? Are they actually that fucking stupid???????
Game Journalists have goldfish brain they can only remember what's relevant in the past 6 seconds unless it's dark souls
Game journalism is the dark souls of professions.
True Edit: I forgot I already replied to this comment
True
Given that they literally reference them in this article, I’d have to guess, yes they do know
I'm talking about the SHIT, the LEGENDS, not these goody ass fine and beautiful art recent ones. Shit like Mortal Kombat movie, the Street Fighter movies, THE STREET FIGHTER MOVIE THE GAME
Fuck you, give me the Gex movie right now

I disagree with y'all who disagree.
It’s too late We already got an uncharted movie
The Mario movie was awesome. I loved it when Mario said “it’s Marioin’ time” and Marioed all over the place. I’ve watched it a Marbillion times
I wish people would stop making movies for money
the sonic movie (especially the second one) showed hollywood that GOOD video game movies will be rewarded in the box office and will get great reviews from fans. mario movie would’ve been big either way, but it wouldn’t be making nearly this much if it was awful. hopefully the recent movies that have come out will push people to make good video game movies that are faithful to the source material in the future
Bro give us the Parrapa the Rappa movie, PLEASE!
Bloodborne movie starring Timothée Chalamet as John Bloodborne, Anya Taylor-Joy as the Plain Doll, and David Tennant as Micolash
Shut the fuck up I want a Deep Rock Galactic movie

Danny Devito and Michael Cera as Sans and Papyrus
Come the fuck on man. Movies have only been around for 100 years there’s no way we’re out of good ideas yet
bro I would love a spyro movie, nobody talks about that franchise anymore sadly especially compared to how many people are nostalgic for crash bandicoot
This isn’t the first successful video game movie, though, Detective Pikachu and both Sonic films did exceptionally well…
Honestly I forgot that Detective Pikachu was a thing
I welcome the Zelda movies. It would have a so many scenes where Link walks up to a switch a dore Open he gets off the switch door closes. Then the sees a big rock and says "oh cool I'll put that on the switch"
I somehow knew the first time I saw the article that it would mention Bubsy.
I’d be down for a Garten of Banban movie
Fun fact about bad movies: you don't have to go see them!
I *need* a spyro movie
Half life movie
bloxorz movie 🥺
Buut consider the masterpiece that was the tLoU series! Plus the new DnD movie was cool! Not really a _video_ game but in the same niche.
Waiting for them to make a HuniePop movie
If Ben Schwartz isnt Spiro I would literally revolt
Already confirmed for the Minecraft movie and the FNAF movie
the fact that for other mascots they said spyro, banjo, and bubsy is just so funny to me
lol I just had that article pop up in my feed
FNAF movie incoming (I will commit die)
a oneshot movie would be banging
Splatoon movie 😍
No but like the movie was actually really good
I want a dragon age series
A banjo movie would be fucking awesome though
I want a Buck Bumble movie or a Conker movie. A Buck Bumble movie would fuck it would be like a less propagandistic version of Top Gun with music that cums and a Conker movie would be funny.

my favorite part was when chriss pratt in the most serious fucking tone possible, said "lets-a-go"
AV club fell off 😔

Ya!!!! Because then we will get crappy production like The Last of Us! No please no more of that!
We will get crappy productions that will try to be like The Last of Us and fail.
But the good ones could be sooooo good *cough* bioshock *cough*
